In this paper we discuss a model which can be considered as a generalization of the well-known scalar-tensor Brans-Dicke theory. This model possesses an interesting feature: due to Born-Infeld type non-linearity of the scalar field the properties of the interaction between two test bodies depend significantly on their masses. It is shown that the model can be interesting in view of the Pioneer 10, 11 spacecraft anomaly.
Motivated by thermodynamic analogy of black holes and Van der Waals liquid/gas system, in this paper, we study $P-V$ criticality of both dilatonic Born-Infeld black holes and their conformal solutions, Brans-Dicke-Born-Infeld solutions. Due to the conformal constraint, we have to neglect the old Lagrangian of dilatonic Born-Infeld theory and its black hole solutions, and introduce a new one. We obtain spherically symmetric nonlinearly charged black hole solutions in both Einstein and Jordan frames and then, we calculate the related conserved and thermodynamic quantities. After that, we extend …
We apply the dynamical systems tools to study the (linear) cosmic dynamics of a Dirac-Born-Infeld-type field trapped in the braneworld. We focus, exclusively, in Randall-Sundrum and in Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati brane models. We analyze the existence and stability of asymptotic solutions for the AdS throat and the quadratic potential and a particular choice of the warp factor and of the potential for the DBI field ($f(ϕ)=1/V(ϕ)$). It is demonstrated, in particular, that in the ultra-relativistic approximation matter-scaling and scalar field-dominated solutions always arise. In the first scenario t…
We present a Born-Infeld type theory to describe the evolution of p-branes propagating in an N = (p+2)-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. The expansion of the BI-type volume element gives rise to the (p+1) Lovelock brane invariants associated with the worldvolume swept out by the brane. Contrary to the Lovelock theory in gravity, the number of Lovelock brane Lagrangians differs in this case, depending on the dimension of the worldvolume as a consequence that we consider the embedding functions, instead of the metric, as the field variables. This model depends on the intrinsic and the extrinsic g…
The field equations associated to Born-Infeld type brane theories are studied by using an auxiliary variables method. This approach hinges on the fact that the expressions defining the physical and geometrical quantities describing the worldvolume are varied independently. The general structure of the Born-Infeld type theories for branes contains the square root of a determinant of a combined matrix between the induced metric on the worldvolume swept out by the brane and a symmetric/antisymmetric tensor depending of gauge, matter or extrinsic curvature terms taking place on the worldvolume. Th…
We show the existence of some bouncing cosmological solutions in the braneworld scenario. More specifically, we consider a dynamical three-brane in the background of Born-Infeld and electrically charged Gauss-Bonnet black hole. We find that, in certain range of parameter space, the brane universe, at least classically, never shrinks to a zero size, resulting in a singularity-free cosmology within the classical domain.
An equivalence between Born-Infeld and effective real scalar field theories for brane structures is built in some specific warped space-time scenarios. Once the equations of motion for tachyon fields related to the Born-Infeld action are written as first-order equations, a simple analytical connection with a particular class of real scalar field superpotentials can be found. This equivalence leads to the conclusion that, for a certain class of superpotentials, both systems can support identical thick brane solutions as well as brane structures described through localized energy densities, $T_{…
Recently, inspired by Eddington's theory, an alternative gravity called Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity was proposed by Ba$\tilde{\text{n}}$ados and Ferreira. It is equivalent to Einstein's general relativity in vacuum, but deviates from it when matter is included. Interestingly, it seems that the cosmological singularities are prevented in this theory. Based on the new theory, we investigate a thick brane model with a scalar field presenting in the five-dimensional background. A domain wall solution is obtained, and further, we find that at low energy the four-dimensional Einstein grav…
Stability and localization of the gravitational perturbations for a special brane system in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld (EiBI) gravity were studied in [Phys. Rev. D 85, 124053 (2012)]. In this paper, we show that the gravitational perturbations for a general brane system are stable, the four-dimensional graviton (massless KK graviton) can be localized on the brane, and the mass spectrum of massive KK gravitons are gapless and continuous. Two models are constructed as examples. In the first model, which is a generalization of [Phys. Rev. D 85, 124053 (2012)], the brane has no inner structure…
We propose the disappearance of "the hyperon puzzle" in neutron star (NS) by invoking two new-physics prescriptions: modified gravity theory and braneworld scenario. By assuming that NS lives on a $3$-brane within a $5d$ empty AdS bulk, gravitationally governed by Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld (EiBI) theory, the field equations can be effectively cast into the usual Einstein's with "apparent" anisotropic energy-momentum tensor. Solving the corresponding brane-TOV equations numerically, we study its mass-radius relation. It is known that the appearance of finite brane tension $λ$ reduces the c…
In whatever Lorentz invariant theory, the presence of extended d-dimensional objects inside a higher dimensional bulk space-time, like for instance D-branes in string theories, induces a spontaneous breakdown of the Poincare' invariance of the bulk; however the effective action describing these extended objects should still respect this larger invariance through a non-linear realization of the full symmetry. Here the specific form of such a realization in presence of an electromagnetic field is uncovered. The Dirac-Born-Infeld type action for a D-brane turns out to be invariant under such tran…
The Palatini $f(|\hatΩ|)$ gravity is a generalized theory of the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity, where $Ω_{~N}^{K}\equivδ_{~N}^{K}+bg^{KL}R_{LN}(Γ)$ is an auxiliary tensor constructed with the spacetime metric $g$ and independent connection $Γ$. In this paper, we study $f(|\hatΩ|)$ theory with $f(|\hatΩ|)=|\hatΩ|^{\frac{1}{2}+n}$ in the thick brane scenario and give some constraints on the brane model. We finally found an analytic solution of the thick brane generated by a single scalar field. The behavior of the negative energy density denotes the localization of the thick brane at th…
We consider the scalar perturbations of Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld braneworld models in this paper. The dynamical equation for the physical propagating degree of freedom $ξ(x^μ,y)$ is achieved by using the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner decomposition method: $F_1(y) {\partial_y^2 ξ} + F_2(y){\partial_y ξ} + {\partial^μ\partial_μ}ξ=0$. We conclude that the solution is tachyonic-free and stable under scalar perturbations for $F_1(y)>0$ but unstable for $F_1(y)< 0$. The stability of a known analytic domain wall solution with the warp factor given by $a(y)= \text{sech}^{\frac{3}{4p}}(ky)$ is analyzed a…
In this paper, quartic quasi-topological black holes in the presence of a nonlinear electromagnetic Born-Infeld field is presented. By using the metric parameters, the charged black hole solutions of quasi-topological Born-Infeld gravity is considered. The thermodynamics of these black holes are investigated and I show that the thermodynamics and conserved quantities verify the first law of thermodynamics. I also introduce the thermodynamics of asymptotically AdS rotating black branes with flat horizon of these class of solutions and I calculate the finite action by use of the counterterm meth…

We find large classes of non-asymptotically flat Einstein-Yang-Mills-Dilaton (EYMD) and Einstein-Yang-Mills-Born-Infeld-Dilaton (EYMBID) black holes in N-dimensional spherically symmetric spacetime expressed in terms of the quasilocal mass. Extension of the dilatonic YM solution to N-dimensions has been possible by employing the generalized Wu-Yang ansatz. Another metric ansatz, which aided in finding exact solutions is the functional dependence of the radius function on the dilaton field. These classes of black holes are stable against linear radial perturbations. In the limit of vanishing di…
Regarding the wide applications of dilaton gravity in the presence of electrodynamics, we introduce a suitable Lagrangian for the coupling of dilaton with gauge field. There are various Lagrangians which show the coupling between scalar fields and electrodynamics with correct special situations. In this paper, taking into account conformal transformation of Brans-Dicke theory with an electrodynamics Lagrangian, we show that how scalar field should couple with electrodynamics in dilaton gravity. In other words, in order to introduce a correct Lagrangian of dilaton gravity, one should check at l…
Recently proposed Born-Infeld (BI) theories of gravity assume a constant BI parameter ($κ$). However, no clear consensus exists on the sign and value of $κ$. Recalling the Brans-Dicke (BD) approach, where a scalar field was used to generate the gravitational constant $G$, we suggest an extension of Born-Infeld gravity with a similar Brans-Dicke flavor. Thus, a new action, with $κ$ elevated to a spacetime dependent real scalar field, is proposed. We illustrate this new theory in a cosmological setting with pressureless dust and radiation as matter. Assuming a functional form of $κ(t)$, we numer…
The phenomenon of spontaneous scalarization of Reissner-Nordström (RN) black holes has recently been found in an Einstein-Maxwell-scalar (EMS) model due to a non-minimal coupling between the scalar and Maxwell fields. Non-linear electrodynamics, e.g., Born-Infeld (BI) electrodynamics, generalizes Maxwell's theory in the strong field regime. Non-minimally coupling the BI field to the scalar field, we study spontaneous scalarization of an Einstein-Born-Infeld-scalar (EBIS) model in this paper. It shows that there are two types of scalarized black hole solutions, i.e., scalarized RN-like and Schw…
Born-Infeld electrodynamics has attracted considerable interest due to its relation to strings and D-branes. In this paper the gravitational perturbations of electrically charged black holes in Einstein-Born-Infeld gravity are studied. Effective potentials for axial perturbations are derived and discussed. The quasi normal modes for the gravitational perturbations are computed using the WKB method. The modes are compared with those of the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. The relation of the quasi normal modes with the non-linear parameter and the spherical index are also investigated. Comments o…
We consider two types of modifications of Born-Infeld gravity in the Palatini formulation and explore their dynamics in the early universe. One of these families considers $f(R)$ corrections to the Born-Infeld Lagrangian, which can be seen as modifications of the dynamics produced by the quantum effects of matter, while the other consists on different powers of the elementary building block of the Born-Infeld Lagrangian, which we denote by $|\hatΩ|$. We find that the two types of nonsingular solutions that arise in the original Born-Infeld theory are also present in these extensions, being bou…
We generalize the ultraviolet sector of gravitation via a Born-Infeld action using lessons from massive gravity. The theory contains all of the elementary symmetric polynomials and is treated in the Palatini formalism. We show how the connection can be solved algebraically to be the Levi-Civita connection of an effective metric. The non-linearity of the algebraic equations yields several branches, one of which always reduces to General Relativity at low curvatures. We explore in detail a {\it minimal} version of the theory, for which we study solutions in the presence of a perfect fluid with s…
We study three aspects of the early-evolutionary phases in low-mass stars within Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld (EiBI) gravity, a viable extension of General Relativity. These aspects are concerned with the Hayashi tracks (i.e. the effective temperature-luminosity relation); the minimum mass required to belong to the main sequence; and the maximum mass allowed for a fully convective star within the main sequence. In all cases we find a dependence of these quantities not only on the theory's parameter, but also on the star's central density, a feature previously found in Palatini $f(R)$ gravity…
