We compute the entropy of antiferromagnetic quantum spin-s chains in an external magnetic field using exact diagonalization and Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The magnetocaloric effect, i.e., temperature variations during adiabatic field changes, can be derived from the isentropes. First, we focus on the example of the spin-s=1 chain and show that one can cool by closing the Haldane gap with a magnetic field. We then move to quantum spin-s chains and demonstrate linear scaling with $s$ close to the saturation field. In passing, we propose a new method to compute many low-lying excited states using the Lanczos recursion.
We study the magnetocaloric effect for the integrable antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain with competing interactions. We computed the Grüneisen parameter, which is closely related to the magnetocaloric effect, for the quantum spin chain in the thermodynamical limit. This is obtained by means of the solution of a set of non-linear integral equations, which describes the thermodynamics of the model. We also provide results for the entropy $S$ and the isentropes in the $(H,T)$ plane.
Zero temperature non-plateau magnetization is a peculiar property of a quantum spin chain and it sometimes appears due to different gyromagnetic factors. In this study, we illustrate a quite unusual nonplateau magnetization property driven by XY-anisotropy in an Ising-XYZ diamond chain. Two particles with spin-1/2 are bonded by XYZ coupling and they are responsible for the emergence of non-plateau magnetization. These two quantum operator spins are bonded to two nodal Ising spins and this process is repeated infinitely to yield a diamond chain structure. Due to the non-plateau magnetization pr…
Magnetization, entropy and magnetocaloric properties of various geometrically frustrated tetrahedra-based Ising antiferromagnetic nanoclusters with corner-, edge-, and face-sharing topologies are studied by exact enumeration. It is found that the studied properties strongly depend on the nanocluster topology and can be very different from those of a single tetrahedron as well as the pyrochlore lattice formed by an infinite number of corner-sharing tetrahedra. From the magnetocaloric point of view an important difference from the latter two systems is the absence of the ground-state zero-magnet…
The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of the mixed spin-(1/2,1) Ising-Heisenberg model on a two-leg ladder with dimer-rung alternation are exactly examined under an adiabatic demagnetization process using the transfer-matrix formalism. We notify that the magnetization curve of the model exhibits plateaux as a function of the applied magnetic field and cyclic four-spin Ising interaction at certain rational fractions of the saturation value. We precisely investigate the ability of cooling/heating of the model nearby the critical points at which discontinuous ground-state phase transition oc…
A hybrid spin-electron system on one-dimensional tetrahedral chain, in which the localized Ising spin regularly alternates with the mobile electron delocalized over three lattice sites, is exactly investigated using the generalized decoration-iteration transformation. The system exhibits either the ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic ground state depending on whether the ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic interaction between the Ising spins and mobile electrons is considered. The enhanced magnetocaloric effect during the adiabatic demagnetization suggests a potential use of the investigated sys…
The magnetization curves and magnetocaloric effect during the adiabatic demagnetization of antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 $XXZ$ Heisenberg clusters with the shape of Johnson's solids (triangular cupola, square cupola and pentagonal cupola) are investigated using the exact numerical diagonalization for different values of the exchange anisotropy ranging in between the Ising and fully isotropic limit. It is demonstrated that spin-1/2 $XXZ$ Heisenberg cupolae display, in comparison with their Ising counterparts, at least one more magnetization plateau. The novel magnetization plateaux extends over a …
We have investigated the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of antiferromagnetic Ising spin chain CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ by magnetization and heat capacity measurements. Both monoclinic $α$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ and triclinic $γ$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ exhibit field-induced metamagnetic transition from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic state via an intermediate ferrimagnetic state with 1/3 magnetization plateau. Due to this field-induced metamagnetic transition, these systems show large conventional as well as inverse magnetocaloric effects. In $α$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$, we observe field-induced complex magnet…
The magnetocaloric effect, that consists of adiabatic temperature changes in a varying external magnetic field, appears not only when the amplitude is changed, but in cases of anisotropic magnetic materials also when the direction is varied. In this article we investigate the magnetocaloric effect theoretically for the archetypical single molecule magnets Fe8 and Mn12 that are rotated with respect to a magnetic field. We complement our calculations for equilibrium situations with investigations of the influence of non-equilibrium thermodynamic cycles.

3d-4f spin interaction induced giant magnetocaloric effect in zircon-type DyCrO4 and HoCrO4 compounds
Recent research dealing with magnetocaloric effect (MCE) study of antiferromagnetic (AFM) low dimensional spin systems have revealed a number of fascinating ground-state crossover characteristics upon application of external magnetic field. Herein, through MCE investigation we have explored field-induced quantum level-crossing characteristics of one such spin system: NH4CuPO4.H2O (NCP), an AFM spin 1/2 dimer. Experimental magnetization and specific heat data are presented and the data have been employed to evaluate entropy, magnetic energy and magnetocaloric properties. We witness a sign chang…
We study the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in spin clusters of six spins with site spins $s=1$, $3/2$ and $2$ for different exchange anisotropies. We also study MCE in an assembly of spin clusters, on a chain, a 2-D square lattice and 3-D cubic lattice with spin-dipolar interactions using a Monte Carlo method in spin-1 systems. We compute the magnetic Grüneisen parameter $Γ_H$, and study its dependence on exchange anisotropy and spin-dipolar interaction. With increase of exchange anisotropy the maxima in $Γ_H$, shifts to higher magnetic fields and becomes a sharp singularity. The first maximum i…
We present the magnetic and thermal properties of the bosonic-superfluid phase in a spin-dimer network using both quasistatic and rapidly-changing pulsed magnetic fields. The entropy derived from a heat-capacity study reveals that the pulsed-field measurements are strongly adiabatic in nature and are responsible for the onset of a significant magnetocaloric effect (MCE). In contrast to previous predictions we show that the MCE is not just confined to the critical regions, but occurs for all fields greater than zero at sufficiently low temperatures. We explain the MCE using a model of the therm…
We report the results of our investigation of the physical properties of mixed metal oxides RFe0.5Cr0.5O3 (R = Er and Yb). ErFe0.5Cr0.5O3 undergoes an antiferromagnetic ordering around 270 K followed by spin reorientation (SR) transitions around 150 and 8 K respectively. In contrast, in YbFe0.5Cr0.5O3 a single SR transition is noted at 36 K, below the AFM ordering temperature of 280 K. In ErFe0.5Cr0.5O3, a significant value of magnetic entropy change (ΔSM) ~ -12.4 J/kg-K is noted near the 2nd SR transition, however, this value is suppressed in YbFe0.5Cr0.5O3. Temperature dependent dielectric p…
Frustrated lanthanide oxides with dense magnetic lattices are of fundamental interest for their potential in cryogenic refrigeration due to a large ground state entropy and suppressed ordering temperatures, but can often be limited by short-range correlations. Here, we present examples of frustrated fcc oxides, Ba$_2$GdSbO$_6$ and Sr$_2$GdSbO$_6$ and the new site-disordered analog Ca$_2$GdSbO$_6$ ([CaGd]$_A$[CaSb]$_B$O$_6$), in which the magnetocaloric effect is influenced by minimal superexchange ($J_1 \sim 10$ mK). We report on the crystal structures using powder x-ray diffraction and the bu…
Magnetic properties of a sigma-phase Fe60V40 intermetallic compound were studied by means of ac and dc magnetic susceptibility and magnetocaloric effect measurements. The compound is a soft magnet yet it was found to behave like a re-entrant spin-glass system. The magnetic ordering temperature was found to be T_C ca.170 K, while the spin-freezing temperature was ca.164 K. Its relative shift per decade of ac frequency was 0.002, a value smaller than that typical of canonical spin-glasses. Magnetic entropy change, DeltaS, in the vicinity of T_C was determined for magnetic field, H, ranging betwe…
The criticality-enhanced magnetocaloric effect (MCE) near a field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) in the spin systems constitutes a very promising and highly tunable alternative to conventional adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration. Strong fluctuations in the low-$T$ quantum critical regime can give rise to a large thermal entropy change and thus significant cooling effect when approaching the QCP. In this work, through efficient and accurate many-body calculations, we show there exists a significant inverse MCE(iMCE) in the spin-1 quantum chain materials(CH$_3$)$_4$NNi(NO$_2$)$_3$ (TMN…
Despite extensive researches on manganites owing to widespread use in modern electronics, this class of metal oxides does not cease to surprise with its unique properties and new phenomena. Here we have studied structural and magnetic properties of non-Heisenberg manganite nanoparticles with a strong spin-electron coupling. During transition from low temperature ferromagnetic to high temperature paramagnetic state, the change in charge, valence and spin (magnetic moment) with the localization of eg-electrons on the manganese ions have been detected. With decrease in a temperature, the overstat…
The magnetic insulator copper pyrazine dinitrate comprises antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chains that are well described by the exactly solvable one-dimensional Heisenberg model, providing a unique opportunity for a quantitative comparison between theory and experiment. Here, we investigate its thermodynamic properties with a particular focus on the field-induced quantum phase transition. Thermal expansion, magnetostriction, specific heat, magnetization and magnetocaloric measurements are found to be in excellent agreement with predictions from exact Bethe-Ansatz results as well as from effective …
We report a detailed study of the magnetic properties of KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$, in which magnetic Gd$^{3+}$ ($S=7/2$) ions form into two-dimensional triangular layers. Magnetization, specific heat and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) measurements have been performed on KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$ single crystals. The results show that a long-range antiferromagnetic state is established below $T_{\rm N}=0.24$ K. In zero fields, only about half of the full entropy is released at $T_{\rm N}$, indicating that not all the magnetic moments are frozen below the ordering temperature, as expected from the geometrical fru…
A coupled spin-electron chain composed of localized Ising spins and mobile electrons is exactly solved in an external magnetic field within the transfer-matrix method. The ground-state phase diagram involves in total seven different ground states, which differ in the number of mobile electrons per unit cell and the respective spin arrangements. A rigorous analysis of the low-temperature magnetization process reveals doping-dependent magnetization plateaus, which may be tuned through the density of mobile electrons. It is demonstrated that the fractional value of the electron density is respons…
We investigate the effects of diamagnetic doping in the solid-solution series $Tb_{1-x}Y_{x}(HCO_{2})_{3}$, in which the parent $Tb(HCO_{2})_{3}$ phase has previously been shown to host a combination of frustrated and quasi-1D physics, giving rise to a triangular Ising antiferromagnetic ground state that lacks long range 3D order. Heat capacity measurements show three key features: (i) a low temperature Schottky anomaly is observed, which is constant as a function of x; (ii) the transition temperature and associated entropy change are both surprisingly robust to diamagnetic doping; and (iii) a…
The magnetocaloric effect in a two-dimensional Ising model is considered for different ratios between parameters of inter-site repulsion of nonmagnetic impurities and exchange coupling. Classical Monte Carlo simulations on a square lattice show that in case of weak coupling and at sufficiently high concentrations of nonmagnetic impurities the long-range ferromagnetic ordering breaks down to give isolated spin clusters in the ground state of the system. This leads to appearance of a paramagnetic response in the system at the zero temperature and nonzero entropy of the ground state. The feasibil…
As materials with suppressed ordering temperatures and enhanced ground state entropies, frustrated magnetic oxides are ideal candidates for cryogenic magnetocaloric refrigeration. While previous materials design has focused on tuning the magnetic moments, their interactions, and density of moments on the lattice, there has been relatively little attention to frustrated lattices. Prior theoretical work has shown that the magnetocaloric cooling rate at the saturation field is proportional to a macroscopic number of soft mode excitations that arise due to the classical ground state degeneracy. Th…
The antiferromagnet Mn$_5$Si$_3$ has recently attracted attention because a noncollinear spin arrangement has been shown to produce a topological anomalous Hall effect and an inverse magnetocaloric effect. Here we synthesize single crystals of Mn$_5$Si$_3$ using flux growth. We determine the phase diagram through magnetization and measure the magnetoresistance and the Hall effect. We find the collinear and noncollinear antiferromagnetic phases at low temperatures and, in addition, a third magnetic phase, in between the two antiferromagnetic phases which has ferromagnetic character. The latter …
An exactly solvable spin-electron tetrahedral chain, where the Ising spins localized at nodal lattice sites regularly alternate with three equivalent lattice sites available for one mobile electron is considered. The system with ferromagnetic interaction between the Ising spins and electrons exhibits an enhanced magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in the limit $H/|J|\to 0$ when the entropy is very small, whereas the system with antiferromagnetic interaction between the Ising spins and electrons exhibits an enhanced MCE around the field $H/J=1$ when the entropy is sufficiently close to the value $S/2N …
We investigate the magnetic, thermal, and magnetocaloric properties of the intermetallic HoAl$_{3}$ compounds with two different crystal structures. The room-temperature equilibrium trigonal phase HoAl$_{3}$ undergoes an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at the Neel temperature $T^{\rm tri}_{\rm N} =$ 9.8 K. The AFM ordering of the compound is strong against the magnetic field, so that inverse magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is found even under a magnetic field change of 0-50 kOe. The high-pressure cubic phase HoAl3, prepared by a rapid-solidification process, is antiferromagnetically ordered bel…
We present a comprehensive experimental study of magnetization and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in double perovskite (DP) materials $R_2$NiMnO$_6$ with $R =$ Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy. While a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition, with T$_{\rm C}$ in the range $\sim 100 - 200~$K, is a common feature that can be attributed to the ordering of Mn$^{4+}$ and Ni$^{2+}$ magnetic moments, qualitatively distinct behavior depending on the choice of $R$ is observed at low temperatures. These low-temperature anomalies in magnetization are also manifest in the change in magnetic entropy, $-ΔS_{M}$, wh…
We have compared and contrasted magnetic, magnetocaloric and magnetoresistive properties of Gd and Dy members of the rare-earth (R) series RFe5Al7, crystallizing in ThMn12 structure, known to order antiferromagnetically. Among other observations, we would like to emphasize on the following novel findings: (i) There are multiple sign-crossovers in the temperature (T) dependence of isothermal entropy change (DeltaS) in the case of Dy compound; in addition to nil DeltaS at the magnetic compensation point known for two-magnetic-sublattice systems, there is an additional sign-crossover at low tempe…
We present a comprehensive study on anisotropic magnetocaloric porperties of the van der Waals weak-itinerant ferromagnet Fe$_{3-x}$GeTe$_2$ that features gate-tunable room-temperature ferromagnetism in few-layer device. Intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy is observed to be temperature-dependent and most likely favors the long-range magnetic order in thin Fe$_{3-x}$GeTe$_2$ crsytal. The magnetic entropy change $-ΔS_M$ also reveals an anisotropic characteristic between $H // ab$ and $H // c$, which could be well scaled into a universal curve. The peak value $-ΔS_M^{max}$ of 1.20 J kg$^{-1}$…
