The phenomenon of dynamical localization of matter wave solitons in optical lattices is first demonstrated and the conditions for its existence are discussed. In addition to the trapping linear periodic potential we use a periodic modulation of the nonlinearity in space to eliminate nonexistence regions of gap-solitons in reciprocal space. We show that when this condition is achieved, the observation of dynamical localization in true nonlinear regime becomes possible. The results apply to all systems described by the periodic nonlinear Schrödinger equation, including Bose-Einstein condensates of ultracold atoms trapped in optical lattices and arrays of waveguides or photonic crystals in nonlinear optics.
At low temperature, a quasi-one-dimensional ensemble of atoms with attractive interaction forms a bright soliton. When exposed to a weak and smooth external potential, the shape of the soliton is hardly modified, but its center-of-mass motion is affected. We show that in a spatially correlated disordered potential, the quantum motion of a bright soliton displays Anderson localization. The localization length can be much larger than the soliton size and could be observed experimentally.
The bright matter wave soliton propagation through a barrier with a rapidly oscillating position is investigated. The averaged over rapid oscillations Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation is derived. It is shown that the soliton is dynamically trapped by the effective double-barrier. The analytical predictions for the soliton effective dynamics is confirmed by the numerical simulations of the full GP equation.
We reformulate the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with an external parabolic potential as a discrete dynamical system, by using the basis of Hermite functions. We consider small amplitude stationary solutions with a single node, called dark solitons, and examine their existence and linear stability. Furthermore, we prove the persistence of a periodic motion in a neighborhood of such solutions. Our results are corroborated by numerical computations elucidating the existence, linear stability and dynamics of the relevant solutions.
We derive exact solitonic solutions of a class of Gross-Pitaevskii equations with time-dependent harmonic trapping potential and interatomic interaction. We find families of exact single-solitonic, multi-solitonic, and solitary wave solutions. We show that, with the special case of an oscillating trapping potential and interatomic interaction, a soliton can be localized indefinitely at an arbitrary position. The localization is shown to be experimentally possible for sufficiently long time even with only an oscillating trapping potential and a constant interatomic interaction.
We study the nonlinear excitations of a vortex-line in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We find that the classical Euler dynamics of the vortex results in a description of the vortex line in terms of a (discrete) one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which allows for both bright and gray soliton solutions. We discuss these solutions in detail and predict that it is possible to create vortex-line solitons with current experimental capabilities.
A new type of matter wave diffraction management is presented that leads to sub-diffractive soliton-like structures. The proposed management technique uses two counter-moving, identical periodic potentials (e.g. optical lattices). For suitable lattice parameters a novel type of atomic band-gap structure appears in which the effective atomic mass becomes infinite at the lowest edge of an energy band. This way normal matter-wave diffraction (proportional to the square of the atomic momentum) is replaced by fourth-order diffraction, and hence the evolution of the system becomes sub-diffractive.
We study the motion of bright matter wave solitons in nonlinear potentials, produced by periodic or random spatial variations of the atomic scattering length. We obtain analytical results for the soliton motion, the radiation of matter wave, and the radiative soliton decay in such configurations of the Bose-Einstein condensate. The stable regimes of propagation are analyzed. The results are in remarkable agreement with the numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with periodic or random spatial variations of the mean field interactions.

A proof of existence of stationary dark soliton solutions of the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a periodic potential is given. It is based on the interpretation of the dark soliton as a heteroclinic on the Poincaré map.
The existence of a novel type of solitons in periodic Kerr media constructed as superposition of noninteracting gap-solitons of different kinds (bright, dark and periodic) is first demonstrated. The periodic modulation of the nonlinearity is used to suppress the cross phase modulation between components to allow the superimposed beam to propagate for long distances.
It is found that localized solitons in the strongly coupled cigar shaped Bose-Einstein condensate form two distinct classes. The one without a background is an asymptotically vanishing, localized soliton, having a wave-number, which has a lower bound in magnitude. Periodic soliton trains exist only in the presence of a background, where the localized soliton has a \textit{W}-type density profile. This soliton is well suited for trapping of neutral atoms and is found to be stable under Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion, as well as numerical evolution. We identify an insulating phase of this system i…
We investigate the interaction of a periodic solution and one-soliton solution for the spin-polarized current in a uniaxial ferromagnetic nanowire. The amplitude and wave number of the periodic solution for the spin current have the different contribution to the width, velocity, and the amplitude of soliton solution, respectively. Moreover, we found that the soliton can be trapped only in space with a proper condition. At last we analyze the modulation instability and discuss dark solitary wave propagation for the spin current on the background of a periodic solution. In some special cases the…
We reveal the existence of asymmetric vortex solitons in ideally symmetric periodic lattices, and show how such nonlinear localized structures describing elementary circular flows can be analyzed systematically using the energy-balance relations. We present the examples of rhomboid, rectangular, and triangular vortex solitons on a square lattice, and also describe novel coherent states where the populations of clockwise and anti-clockwise vortex modes change periodically due to a nonlinearity-induced momentum exchange through the lattice. Asymmetric vortex solitons are expected to exist in dif…
We investigate two-dimensional (2D) states of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) with self-attraction or self-repulsion, trapped in an axially symmetric optical-lattice potential periodic along the radius. Unlike previously studied 2D models with Bessel lattices, no localized states exist in the linear limit of the present model, hence all localized states are truly nonlinear ones. We consider the states trapped in the central potential well, and in remote circular troughs. In both cases, a new species, in the form of \textit{radial gap solitons}, are found in the repulsive model (the gap soliton…
We comprehensively investigate gap solitons and Bloch waves in one-dimensional nonlinear periodic systems. Our results show that there exists a composition relation between them: Bloch waves at either the center or edge of the Brillouin zone are infinite chains composed of fundamental gap solitons(FGSs). We argue that such a relation is related to the exact relation between nonlinear Bloch waves and nonlinear Wannier functions. With this composition relation, many conclusions can be drawn for gap solitons without any computation. For example, for the defocusing nonlinearity, there are $n$ fami…
We analyze the existence, stability, and internal modes of gap solitons in nonlinear periodic systems described by the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a sinusoidal potential, such as photonic crystals, waveguide arrays, optically-induced photonic lattices, and Bose-Einstein condensates loaded onto an optical lattice. We study bifurcations of gap solitons from the band edges of the Floquet-Bloch spectrum, and show that gap solitons can appear near all lower or upper band edges of the spectrum, for focusing or defocusing nonlinearity, respectively. We show that, in general, two types of gap …
The light ray of a spatial soliton in an optical film whose refractive index is smoothly modulated (wavelength much larger than the typical soliton width) in both spatial directions is shown to possess chaotic regimes for which the propagation is erratic. This is interpreted as a parametric driven pendulum, obtained by a new perturbative approach of the Maxwell equation. These findings are then demonstrated to compare well to the eikonal law of light ray propagation (nonlinearity compensates diffraction).
Motivated by recent proposals of ``collisionally inhomogeneous'' Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), which have a spatially modulated scattering length, we study the existence and stability properties of bright and dark matter-wave solitons of a BEC characterized by a periodic, piecewise-constant scattering length. We use a ``stitching'' approach to analytically approximate the pertinent solutions of the underlying nonlinear Schrödinger equation by matching the wavefunction and its derivatives at the interfaces of the nonlinearity coefficient. To accurately quantify the stability of bright and d…
We theoretically study discrete photonic lattices in more than three dimensions and point out that such systems can exist in continuous three-dimensional (3D) space. We study discrete diffraction in the linear regime, and predict the existence of four-dimensional (4D) tesseract solitons in nonlinear 4D periodic photonic lattices. Finally, we propose a design towards a potential realization of such periodic 4D lattices in experiments.
Exact solutions for the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with inhomogeneous complex linear and nonlinear potentials are found. We have found localized and periodic solutions for a wide class of localized and periodic modulations in the space of complex potentials and nonlinearity coefficients. Examples of stable and unstable solutions are given. We also demonstrated numerically the existence of stable dissipative breathers in the presence of an additional parabolic trap.
We analyze perturbed version of the complex Toda chain (CTC) in an attempt to describe the adiabatic N - soliton train interactions of the perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS). We study perturbations with weak quadratic and periodic external potentials by both analytical and numerical means. The perturbed CTC adequately models the N - soliton train dynamics for both types of potentials. As an application of the developed theory we consider the dynamics of a train of matter - wave solitons confined in a parabolic trap and optical lattice, as well as tilted periodic potential.
