We extend the theory for third-order structure functions in homogeneous incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence to the case in which a constant velocity shear is present. A generalization is found of the usual relation [Politano and Pouquet, Phys. Rev. E, 57 21 (1998)] between third-order structure functions and the dissipation rate in steady inertial range turbulence, in which the shear plays a crucial role. In particular, the presence of shear leads to a third-order law which is not simply proportional to the relative separation. Possible implications for laboratory and space plasmas are discussed.
The effect of a narrow sub-Alfvenic shear flow layer near the minimum q_min of the tokamak safety factor profile in a configuration with reversed central shear is analyzed. Sufficiently strong velocity shear gives rise to a broad spectrum of fast growing Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH)-like ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes with dominant mode numbers m,n ~ 10. Nonlinear simulations with finite resistivity show magnetic reconnection near ripples caused by KH-like vortices, the formation of turbulent structures, and a flattening of the flow profile. The KH modes are compared to double tearing modes (D…
Adopting the theoretical framework for the generalized fishbonelike dispersion relation, an extended hybrid magnetohydrodynamics gyrokinetic simulation model has been derived analytically by taking into account both thermal ion compressibility and diamagnetic effects in addition to energetic particle kinetic behaviors. The extended model has been used for implementing an eXtended version of Hybrid Magnetohydrodynamics Gyrokinetic Code (XHMGC) to study thermal ion kinetic effects on Alfvénic modes driven by energetic particles, such as kinetic beta induced Alfvén eigenmodes in tokamak fusion pl…
This article presents a calculation of the mean electromotive force arising from general small-scale magnetohydrodynamical turbulence, within the framework of the second-order correlation approximation. With the goal of improving understanding of the accretion disk dynamo, effects arising through small-scale magnetic fluctuations, velocity gradients, density and turbulence stratification, and rotation, are included. The primary result, which supplements numerical findings, is that an off-diagonal turbulent resistivity due to magnetic fluctuations can produce large-scale dynamo action -- the ma…
A sufficient condition for the linear stability of three dimensional equilibria with incompressible flows parallel to the magnetic field is derived. The condition involves physically interpretable terms related to the magnetic shear and the flow shear.
Viscous phenomena are the hallmark of the hydrodynamic flow exhibited by Dirac fermions in clean graphene at high enough temperatures. We report a quantitative calculation of the electronic shear and Hall viscosities in graphene based on the kinetic theory combined with the renormalization group providing a unified description at arbitrary doping levels and non-quantizing magnetic fields. At charge neutrality, the Hall viscosity vanishes, while the field-dependent shear viscosity decays from its zero-field value saturating to a nonzero value in classically strong fields. Away from charge neutr…
Space and astrophysical plasmas are frequently found in the regime of differential rotation, where the presence of a magnetic field can result in the magnetorotational instability, directly responsible for important phenomena such as turbulent angular momentum transport in accretion disks. In the absence of an imposed magnetic field, a nonlinear dynamo is necessary for this transport mechanism to take place. In protoplanetary disks there are regions with high density and very low temperatures, which are two necessary conditions for the Hall effect to operate, affecting the development of the d…
We investigate the dependency with scale of the empirical probability distribution functions (PDF) of Elsasser increments using large sets of WIND data (collected between 1995 and 2017) near 1 au. The empirical PDF are compared to the ones obtained from high-resolution numerical simulations of steadily driven, homogeneous Reduced MHD turbulence on a $2048^3$ rectangular mesh. A large statistical sample of Alfvénic increments is obtained by using conditional analysis based on the solar wind average properties. The PDF tails obtained from observations and numerical simulations are found to have …
Magnetic induction in magnetohydrodynamic fluids at magnetic Reynolds number (Rm) less than~1 has long been known to cause magnetic drag. Here, we show that when $\mathrm{Rm} \gg 1$ and the fluid is in a hydrodynamic-dominated regime in which the magnetic energy is much smaller than the kinetic energy, induction due to a mean shear flow leads to a magnetic eddy viscosity. The magnetic viscosity is derived from simple physical arguments, where a coherent response due to shear flow builds up in the magnetic field until decorrelated by turbulent motion. The dynamic viscosity coefficient is approx…
The pseudospectral method is a highly accurate numerical scheme suitable for turbulence simulations. We have developed an open-source pseudospectral code, \textsc{\textsf{Calliope}}, which adopts the P3DFFT library \citep{Pekurovsky2012} to perform a fast Fourier transform with the two-dimensional (pencil) decomposition of numerical grids. \textsc{\textsf{Calliope}} can solve incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), isothermal compressible MHD, and rotational reduced MHD with parallel computation using very large numbers of cores ($> 10^5$ cores for $2048^3$ grids). The code can also solve f…
Analytic solutions of the magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium equations for a cylindrically symmetric magnetically confined plasma with reversed magnetic shear, s < 0, and sheared flow are constructed by prescribing the safety factor-, poloidal velocity- and axial velocity- profiles consistently with experimental ones.
We find and investigate via numerical simulations self-sustained two-dimensional turbulence in a magnetohydrodynamic flow with a maximally simple configuration: plane, noninflectional (with a constant shear of velocity) and threaded by a parallel uniform background magnetic field. This flow is spectrally stable, so the turbulence is subcritical by nature and hence it can be energetically supported just by transient growth mechanism due to shear flow nonnormality. This mechanism appears to be essentially anisotropic in spectral (wavenumber) plane and operates mainly for spatial Fourier harmonic…
We investigate the evolution of magnetohydrodynamic/hydromagnetic perturbations in the presence of stochastic noise in rotating shear flows. The particular emphasis is the flows whose angular velocity decreases but specific angular momentum increases with increasing radial coordinate. Such flows, however, are Rayleigh stable, but must be turbulent in order to explain astrophysical observed data and, hence, reveal a mismatch between the linear theory and observations/experiments. The mismatch seems to have been resolved, atleast in certain regimes, in the presence of weak magnetic field reveali…
We study theoretically mode conversion and resonant overreflection of magnetohydrodynamic waves in an inhomogeneous plane-stratified plasma in the presence of a nonuniform shear flow, using precise numerical calculations of the reflection and transmission coefficients and the field distributions based on the invariant imbedding method. The cases where the flow velocity and the external magnetic field are directed perpendicularly to the inhomogeneity direction and both the flow velocity and the plasma density vary arbitrarily along it are considered. When there is a shear flow, the wave frequen…
Negative energy wave phenomena may appear in shear flows in the presence of a wave decay mechanism and external energy supply. We study the appearance of negative energy surface waves in a plasma cylinder in the incompressible limit. The cylinder is surrounded by an axial magnetic field and by a plasma of different density. Considering flow inside and viscosity outside the flux tube, we derive dispersion relations, and obtain analytical solutions for the phase speed and growth rate (increment) of the waves. It is found that the critical speed shear for the occurrence of the dissipative instabi…
Magnetohydrodynamic turbulence is central to laboratory and astrophysical plasmas, and is invoked for interpreting many observed scalings. Verifying predicted scaling law behaviour requires extreme-resolution direct numerical simulations (DNS), with needed computing resources excluding systematic parameter surveys. We here present an analytic generator of realistically looking turbulent magnetic fields, that computes 3D ${\cal{O}}(1000^3)$ solenoidal vector fields in minutes to hours on desktops. Our model is inspired by recent developments in 3D incompressible fluid turbulence theory, where a…
From numerical simulations, we show that non-rotating magnetohydrodynamic shear flows are unstable to finite amplitude velocity perturbations and become turbulent, leading to the growth and sustenance of magnetic energy, including large scale fields. This supports the concept that sustained magnetic energy from turbulence is independent of the driving mechanism for large enough magnetic Reynolds numbers.
We present a set of three-dimensional (3D) direct numerical simulations of incompressible decaying magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in which we investigate the influence of an external uniform magnetic field B_0. A parametric study in terms of B_0 intensity is made where, in particular, we distinguish the shear- from the pseudo-Alfven waves dynamics. The initial kinetic and magnetic energies are equal with a negligible cross-correlation. Both the temporal and spectral effects of B_0 are discussed. A sub-critical balance is found between the Alfven and nonlinear times with both a global and a spe…
Straining of magnetic fields by large-scale shear flow, generally assumed to lead to intensification and generation of small scales, is re-examined in light of the persistent observation of large-scale magnetic fields in astrophysics. It is shown that, in magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, unstable shear flows have the unexpected effect of sequestering magnetic energy at large scales, due to counteracting straining motion of nonlinearly excited large-scale stable eigenmodes. This effect is quantified via dissipation rates, energy transfer rates, and visualizations of magnetic field evolution by a…
High-order plasma shaping (mainly elongation and shift, as opposed to low-order toroidicity) is shown, under certain conditions, to open gaps in the coupled shear-Alfvén and acoustic continua at frequencies significantly above the values predicted by previous theories. Global eigenmodes in these gaps, which lie between those of geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs) and toroidicity-induced Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs), are found unstable to hot-ion populations typical of tokamak operation, whilst their fundamental resonances with circulating particles are shown to take place at velocities near the geometr…
The nonlinear evolution of the m=1 internal kink mode is studied numerically in a setting where the tokamak core plasma is surrounded by a turbulent region with low magnetic shear. As a starting point we choose configurations with three nearby q=1 surfaces where triple tearing modes (TTMs) with high poloidal mode numbers m are unstable. While the amplitudes are still small, the fast growing high-m TTMs enhance the growth of the m=1 instability. This is interpreted as a fast sawtooth trigger mechanism. The TTMs lead to a partial collapse, leaving behind a turbulent belt with q ~= 1 around the u…
The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) description of plasmas with relativistic particles necessarily includes an additional new field, the chiral chemical potential associated with the axial charge (i.e., the number difference between right- and left-handed relativistic fermions). This chiral chemical potential gives rise to a contribution to the electric current density of the plasma (\emph{chiral magnetic effect}). We present a self-consistent treatment of the \emph{chiral MHD equations}, which include the back-reaction of the magnetic field on a chiral chemical potential and its interaction with th…
We present experimental observations suggesting that the non-diffusive avalanche-like events are a prevalent and universal process of the electron turbulent heat transport in tokamak core plasmas. They are observed in the low confinement mode and the weak internal transport barrier tokamak plasmas in the absence of magnetohydrodynamic instabilities. In addition, the electron temperature profile corrugation, which indicates the existence of the $E \times B$ shear flow layers, is clearly demonstrated as well as their dynamical interaction with the avalanche-like events. The measured width of the…
Recent measurements of solar wind turbulence report the presence of intermittent, exponentially distributed angular discontinuities in the magnetic field. In this Letter, we study whether such discontinuities can be produced by magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. We detect the discontinuities by measuring the fluctuations of the magnetic field direction, Delta theta, across fixed spatial increments Delta x in direct numerical simulations of MHD turbulence with an imposed uniform guide field B_0. A large region of the probability density function (pdf) for Delta theta is found to follow an ex…

We demonstrate the dragging of the magnetic field by the super-Alfvenic shear flows out of the reconnection plane can strongly localize the reconnection x-line in collisionless plasmas, reversing the current direction at the x-line. Reconnection with this new morphology, which is impossible in resistive-magnetohydrodynamic (MHD), is enabled by electron inertia. Surprisingly, the quasi-steady reconnection rate remains of order 0.1 even though the aspect ratio of the local x-line geometry is larger than unity. We explain this by examining the transport of the reconnected magnetic flux and the op…
Exploration of plasma dynamics in space, including turbulence, is entering a new era of multi-satellite constellation measurements that will determine fundamental properties with unprecedented precision. Familiar but imprecise approximations will need to be abandoned and replaced with more advanced approaches. We present a preparatory study of the evaluation of second- and third-order statistics, using simultaneous measurements at many points. Here, for specificity, the orbital configuration of the NASA Helioswarm mission is employed in conjunction with three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics n…
