We demonstrate the dragging of the magnetic field by the super-Alfvenic shear flows out of the reconnection plane can strongly localize the reconnection x-line in collisionless plasmas, reversing the current direction at the x-line. Reconnection with this new morphology, which is impossible in resistive-magnetohydrodynamic (MHD), is enabled by electron inertia. Surprisingly, the quasi-steady reconnection rate remains of order 0.1 even though the aspect ratio of the local x-line geometry is larger than unity. We explain this by examining the transport of the reconnected magnetic flux and the opening angle made by the upstream magnetic field, concluding that the reconnection rate is still limited by the constraint imposed at the inflow region. This study further suggests the nearly universal fast rate value of order 0.1 cannot be explained by the physics of tearing modes, nor can it be explained by a universal localization mechanism.
The propagation of reconnection signatures and their associated energy are examined using kinetic particle-in-cell simulations and Cluster satellite observations. It is found that the quadrupolar out-of-plane magnetic field near the separatrices is associated with a kinetic Alfvén wave. For magnetotail parameters, the parallel propagation of this wave is super-Alfvénic (V_parallel ~ 1500 - 5500 km/s) and generates substantial Poynting flux (S ~ 10^-5 - 10^-4 W/m^2) consistent with Cluster observations of magnetic reconnection. This Poynting flux substantially exceeds that due to frozen-in ion …
The magnetohydrodynamic linear stability with the localized bulk flow oriented parallel to the neutral sheet is investigated, by including the Hall effect and the guide magnetic field. We observe three different unstable modes: a "streaming tearing" mode at a slow flow speed, a "streaming sausage" mode at a medium flow speed, and a "streaming kink" mode at a fast flow speed. The streaming tearing and sausage modes have a standard tearing mode-like structure with symmetric density fluctuations in the neutral sheet, while the kink mode has an asymmetric fluctuation. The growth rate of the stream…
The outflow velocity of jets produced by collisionless magnetic reconnection is shown to be reduced by the ion exhaust temperature in simulations and observations. We derive a scaling relationship for the outflow velocity based on the upstream Alfvén speed and the parallel ion exhaust temperature, which is verified in kinetic simulations and observations. The outflow speed reduction is shown to be due to the firehose instability criterion, and so for large enough guide fields this effect is suppressed and the outflow speed reaches the upstream Alfvén speed based on the reconnecting component o…
This work presents a magnetic reconnection experiment in which the kinetic, magnetic and thermal properties of the plasma each play an important role in the overall energy balance and structure of the generated reconnection layer. Magnetic reconnection occurs during the interaction of continuous and steady flows of super-Alfvenic, magnetized, aluminum plasma, which collide in a geometry with two-dimensional symmetry, producing a stable and long-lasting reconnection layer. Optical Thomson scattering measurements show that when the layer forms, ions inside the layer are more strongly heated than…
The spreading of the X-line out of the reconnection plane under a strong guide field is investigated using large-scale three-dimensional (3D) particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations in asymmetric magnetic reconnection. A simulation with a thick, ion-scale equilibrium current sheet (CS) reveals that the X-line spreads at the ambient ion/electron drift speeds, significantly slower than the Alfvén speed based on the guide field $V_{Ag}$. Additional simulations with a thinner, sub-ion-scale CS show that the X-line spreads at $V_{Ag}$ (Alfvénic spreading), much higher than the ambient species drifts. An…
We propose a mechanism whereby the intense, sheet-like structures naturally formed by dynamically aligning Alfvénic turbulence are destroyed by magnetic reconnection at a scale $\hatλ_{\rm D}$, larger than the dissipation scale predicted by models of intermittent, dynamically aligning turbulence. The reconnection process proceeds in several stages: first, a linear tearing mode with $N$ magnetic islands grows and saturates, and then the $X$-points between these islands collapse into secondary current sheets, which then reconnect until the original structure is destroyed. This effectively impose…
We calculate the disruption scale $λ_{\rm D}$ at which sheet-like structures in dynamically aligned Alfvénic turbulence are destroyed by the onset of magnetic reconnection in a low-$β$ collisionless plasma. The scaling of $λ_{\rm D}$ depends on the order of the statistics being considered, with more intense structures being disrupted at larger scales. The disruption scale for the structures that dominate the energy spectrum is $λ_{\rm D}\sim L_\perp^{1/9}(d_eρ_s)^{4/9}$, where $d_e$ is the electron inertial scale, $ρ_s$ is the ion sound scale, and $L_\perp$ is the outer scale of the turbulence…
We perform a theoretical and numerical study of anti-parallel 2D magnetic reconnection with asymmetries in the density and reconnecting magnetic field strength in addition to a bulk flow shear across the reconnection site in the plane of the reconnecting fields, which commonly occurs at planetary magnetospheres. We predict the speed at which an isolated X-line is convected by the flow, the reconnection rate, and the critical flow speed at which reconnection no longer takes place for arbitrary reconnecting magnetic field strengths, densities, and upstream flow speeds, and confirm the results wi…
Using a 2D Viscoresistive Reduced MagnetoHydroDynamic (VR-RMHD) model, the magnetic island coalescence problem is studied in the presence of in-plane, parallel shear flows. Extending the analytical work of Waelbroeck et al [33] and Throumoulopoulos et al [34] in the sub-Alfvénic flow shear regime for Fadeev equilibrium, the super-Alfvénic regime is studied for the first time numerically. A wide range of values of shear flow amplitudes and shear scale lengths have been considered to understand the effect of sub-Alfvénic and super-Alfvénic flows on the coalescence instability and its nonlinear f…
Magnetic reconnection in current sheets converts magnetic energy into particle energy. The process may play an important role in the acceleration and heating of the solar wind close to the Sun. Observations from Parker Solar Probe provide a new opportunity to study this problem, as it measures the solar wind at unprecedented close distances to the Sun. During the 1st orbit, PSP encountered a large number of current sheets in the solar wind through perihelion at 35.7 solar radii. We performed a comprehensive survey of these current sheets and found evidence for 21 reconnection exhausts. These e…
A new concept for generation of thrust for space propulsion is introduced. Energetic thrust is generated in the form of plasmoids (confined plasma in closed magnetic loops) when magnetic helicity (linked magnetic field lines) is injected into an annular channel. Using a novel configuration of static electric and magnetic fields, the concept utilizes a current-sheet instability to spontaneously and continuously create plasmoids via magnetic reconnection. The generated low-temperature plasma is simulated in a global annular geometry using the extended magnetohydrodynamic model. Because the syste…
Particle acceleration in space and astrophysical reconnection sites is an important unsolved problem in studies of magnetic reconnection. Earlier kinetic simulations have identified several acceleration mechanisms that are associated with particle drift motions. Here, we show that, for sufficient large systems, the energization processes due to particle drift motions can be described as fluid compression and shear, and that the shear energization is proportional to the pressure anisotropy of energetic particles. By analyzing results from fully kinetic simulations, we show that the compression …
In the Hall magnetohydrodynamics, the onset condition of the Kelvin Helmholtz instability is solely determined by the Hall effect and is independent of the nature of shear flows. In addition, the physical mechanism behind the super and sub Alfvenic flows becoming unstable is quite different: the high frequency right circularly polarized whistler becomes unstable in the super Alfvenic flows whereas low frequency, left circularly polarized ion-cyclotron wave becomes unstable in the presence of sub Alfvenic shear flows. The growth rate of the Kelvin Helmholtz instability in the super Alfvenic cas…
We report the first experimental evidence of Alfvenic ion temperature gradient (AITG) modes in HL-2A Ohmic plasmas. A group of oscillations with $f=15-40$ kHz and $n=3-6$ is detected by various diagnostics in high-density Ohmic regimes. They appear in the plasmas with peaked density profiles and weak magnetic shear, which indicates that corresponding instabilities are excited by pressure gradients. The time trace of the fluctuation spectrogram can be either a frequency staircase, with different modes excited at different times or multiple modes may simultaneously coexist. Theoretical analyses …
Particle energization in shear flows is invoked to explain non-thermal emission from the boundaries of relativistic astrophysical jets. Yet, the physics of particle injection, i.e., the mechanism that allows thermal particles to participate in shear-driven acceleration, remains unknown. With particle-in-cell simulations, we study the development of Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instabilities seeded by the velocity shear between a relativistic magnetically-dominated electron-positron jet and a weakly magnetized electron-ion ambient plasma. We show that, in their nonlinear stages, KH vortices generate k…
Plasmoid theory uses two-coordinate models to explain fast magnetic reconnection, which occurs on an Alfvénic, not a resistive time scale, in plasmas that are evolving in the near-ideal limit. The primary application has been to three-dimensional naturally-occurring plasmas. A magnetic field representation that applies to all magnetic fields allows features of magnetic evolution in toroidal and natural plasmas to be compared. This comparison illustrates why plasmoid models of magnetic field evolution are not robust solutions to Maxwell's equations. Despite five-hundred papers on plasmoid model…
A catastrophe model for the onset of fast magnetic reconnection is presented that suggests why plasma systems with magnetic free energy remain apparently stable for long times and then suddenly release their energy. For a given set of plasma parameters there are generally two stable reconnection solutions: a slow (Sweet-Parker) solution and a fast (Alfvénic) Hall reconnection solution. Below a critical resistivity the slow solution disappears and fast reconnection dominates. Scaling arguments predicting the two solutions and the critical resistivity are confirmed with two-fluid simulations.
A 2D incompressible viscoresistive-MHD model [Mahapatra et. al., Phys. Plasmas 28, 072103 (2021)] is used to study the scaling of reconnection parameters in magnetic island coalescence problem under two interesting scenarios. Firstly, the effect of changing island half-width at a fixed system size is investigated. As the island half-width increases, the total magnetic flux content increases resulting in an increase in upstream magnetic field, upstream velocity field and unnormalized reconnection rate while keeping the normalized rate, downstream magnetic field and current sheet length independ…
The dynamics of a global reconnection in the presence of a poloidal shear flow which is located in between magnetic islands is investigated. Different linear regimes are identified according to the value of the resistivity and the distance between the low-order resonant surfaces. It is found that the presence of a small shear flow affects and significantly delays the global reconnection processes. It is shown that this delay is linked to a breaking of symmetry imposed by the existence of the shear flow and the generation of a mean poloidal flow in the resistive layers.
Fully kinetic two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are used to study electron acceleration at high-Mach-number nonrelativistic perpendicular shocks. SNR shocks are mediated by the Weibel instability which is excited because of an interaction between shock-reflected and upstream ions. Nonlinear evolution of the Weibel instability leads to the formation of current sheets. At the turbulent shock ramp the current sheets decay through magnetic reconnection. The number of reconnection sites strongly depends on the ion-to-electron mass ratio and the Alfvénic Mach number of the simulated shock…
Thin current sheets in systems of large size that exceed a critical value of the Lundquist number are unstable to a super-Alfvenic tearing instability. The scaling of the growth rate of the fastest growing instability with respect to the Lundquist number is shown to follow from the classical dispersion relation for tearing modes. As a result of this instability, the system realizes a nonlinear reconnection rate that appears to be weakly dependent on the Lundquist number, and larger than the Sweet-Parker rate by an order of magnitude (for the range of Lundquist numbers considered). This regime …
The rate of reconnection characterizes how quickly flux and mass can move into and out of the reconnection region. In the Terrestrial Reconnection EXperiment (TREX), the rate at which antiparallel asymmetric reconnection occurs is modulated by the presence of a shock and a region of flux pileup in the high-density inflow. Simulations utilizing a generalized Harris-sheet geometry have tentatively shown agreement with TREX's measured reconnection rate scaling relative to system size, which is indicative of the transition from ion-coupled toward electron-only reconnection. Here we present simulat…
Electron heating/acceleration in the foreshock, by which electrons may be energized beyond thermal energies prior to encountering the bow shock, is very important for the bow shock dynamics. And then these electrons would be more easily injected into a process like diffusive shock acceleration. Many mechanisms have been proposed to explain electrons heating/acceleration in the foreshock. Magnetic reconnection is one possible candidate. Taking advantage of the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, we present two magnetic reconnection events in the dawn-side and dusk-side ion foreshock region, resp…
This paper presents two-fluid simulations of forced magnetic reconnection with finite electron inertia in a collisionless three-dimensional (3D) cube with periodic boundaries in all three directions. Comparisons are made to analogous two-dimensional (2D) simulations. Reconnection in this system is driven by a spatially localized forcing function that is added to the ion momentum equation inside the computational domain. Consistent with previous results in similar, but larger forced 2D simulations [B. Sullivan, B. N. Rogers, and M. A. Shay, Phys. Plasmas 12, 122312 (2005)], for sufficiently str…

A detailed numerical study of magnetic reconnection in resistive MHD for very large, previously inaccessible, Lundquist numbers ($10^4\le S\le 10^8$) is reported. Large-aspect-ratio Sweet-Parker current sheets are shown to be unstable to super-Alfvénically fast formation of plasmoid (magnetic-island) chains. The plasmoid number scales as $S^{3/8}$ and the instability growth rate in the linear stage as $S^{1/4}$, in agreement with the theory by Loureiro et al. [Phys. Plasmas {\bf 14}, 100703 (2007)]. In the nonlinear regime, plasmoids continue to grow faster than they are ejected and completely…
The spontaneous evolution of magnetic reconnection in generalized situations (with thermodynamic asymmetry regarding the current sheet and magnetic shear) is investigated using two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulation. We focus on the asymptotic state of temporal evolution, i.e., the self-similarly expanding phase (Nitta et al. 2001). 1) A long fast-mode shock is generated in front of the shorter plasmoid as in the shear-less thermodynamically asymmetric case; however, the sheared magnetic component weakens the shock. This fast shock may work as a particle acceleration site. 2) The short…
We investigate magnetic reconnection in systems simultaneously containing asymmetric (anti-parallel) magnetic fields, asymmetric plasma densities and temperatures, and arbitrary in-plane bulk flow of plasma in the upstream regions. Such configurations are common in the high-latitudes of Earth's magnetopause and in tokamaks. We investigate the convection speed of the X-line, the scaling of the reconnection rate, and the condition for which the flow suppresses reconnection as a function of upstream flow speeds. We use two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations to capture the mixing of plasma i…
We investigate, by means of two-dimensional incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) numerical simulations, the fast collisional magnetic reconnection regime that is supported by the formation of plasmoid chains when the Lundquist number $S$ exceeds a critical value (at magnetic Prandtl number, $P_m = 1$). A recently developed characteristic-Galerkin finite-element code, FINMHD, that is specifically designed for this aim in a reduced visco-resistive MHD framework, is employed. Contrary to previous studies, a different initial setup of two repelling current channels is chosen in order to form t…
Magnetic reconnection is believed to be the driver of many explosive phenomena in Astrophysics, from solar to gamma-ray flares in magnetars and in the Crab nebula. However, reconnection rates from classic MHD models are far too slow to explain such observations. Recently, it was realized that when a current sheet gets sufficiently thin, the reconnection rate of the tearing instability becomes "ideal", in the sense that the current sheet destabilizes on the "macroscopic" Alfvénic timescales, regardless of the Lundquist number of the plasma. Here we present 2D compressible MHD simulations in the…

In laboratory and natural plasmas of practical interest, the spatial scale $Δ_d$ at which magnetic field lines lose distinguishability differs enormously from the scale $a$ of magnetic reconnection across the field lines. In the solar corona, plasma resistivity gives $a/Δ_d\sim10^{12}$, which is the magnetic Reynold number $R_m$. The traditional resolution of the paradox of disparate scales is for the current density $j$ associated with the reconnecting field $B_{rec}$ to be concentrated by a factor of $R_m$ by the ideal evolution, so $ j\sim B_{rec}/μ_0Δ_d$. A second resolution is for the ide…

By means of fully kinetic simulations, we investigate electron acceleration during magnetic reconnection in a nonrelativistic proton--electron plasma with conditions similar to solar corona and flares. We demonstrate that reconnection leads to a nonthermally dominated electron acceleration with a power-law energy distribution in the nonrelativistic low-$β$ regime but not in the high-$β$ regime, where $β$ is the ratio of the plasma thermal pressure and the magnetic pressure. The accelerated electrons contain most of the dissipated magnetic energy in the low-$β$ regime. A guiding-center current …

Particle dynamics in the electron current layer in collisionless magnetic reconnection is investigated by using a particle-in-cell simulation. Electron motion and velocity distribution functions are studied by tracking self-consistent trajectories. New classes of electron orbits are discovered: figure-eight-shaped regular orbits inside the electron jet, noncrossing regular orbits on the jet flanks, noncrossing Speiser orbits, and nongyrotropic electrons in the downstream of the jet termination region. Properties of a super-Alfvénic outflow jet are attributed to an ensemble of electrons traveli…
Our understanding of magnetic reconnection in resistive magnetohydrodynamics has gone through a fundamental change in recent years. The conventional wisdom is that magnetic reconnection mediated by resistivity is slow in laminar high Lundquist ($S$) plasmas, constrained by the scaling of the reconnection rate predicted by Sweet-Parker theory. However, recent studies have shown that when $S$ exceeds a critical value $\sim10^{4}$, the Sweet-Parker current sheet is unstable to a super-Alfvénic plasmoid instability, with a linear growth rate that scales as $S^{1/4}$. In the fully developed statist…
Magnetic reconnection occurs when two plasmas having co-planar but anti-parallel magnetic fields meet. At the contact point, the field is locally annihilated and the magnetic energy can be released into the surrounding plasma. Theory and numerical modelling still face many challenges in handling this complex process, the predictability of which remains elusive. Here we test, through a laboratory experiment conducted in a controlled geometry, the effect of changing the field topology from two-dimensional to three-dimensional. This is done by imposing an out-of-plane (guide) magnetic field of ad…
The effect of a parallel velocity shear on the explosive phase of a double current sheet system is investigated within the 2D resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) framework. We further explore the effect of this shear on acceleration of test particles. The general evolution pattern of the double current sheets is similar for all sub-Alfvénic shears with respect to the initial transient phase, the onset of the plasmoid instability and the final relaxation phase. We find that the theoretical scaling of the reconnection rate with shear holds if the rate is measured when the islands have a similar …
A number of studies have considered how the rate of magnetic reconnection scales in large and weakly collisional systems by the modelling of long reconnecting current sheets. However, this set-up neglects both the formation of the current sheet and the coupling between the diffusion region and a larger system that supplies the magnetic flux. Recent studies of magnetic island merging, which naturally include these features, have found that ion kinetic physics is crucial to describe the reconnection rate and global evolution of such systems. In this paper, the effect of a guide field on reconnec…
We present results from the first self-consistent multi-fluid simulations of chromospheric magnetic reconnection in a weakly ionized reacting plasma. We simulate two dimensional magnetic reconnection in a Harris current sheet with a numerical model which includes ion-neutral scattering collisions, ionization, recombination, optically thin radiative loss, collisional heating, and thermal conduction. In the resulting tearing mode reconnection the neutral and ion fluids become decoupled upstream from the reconnection site, creating an excess of ions in the reconnection region and therefore an ion…
Over the past decade, Boozer has argued that three-dimensional (3D) magnetic reconnection fundamentally differs from two-dimensional (2D) reconnection due to the fact that the separation between any pair of neighboring field lines almost always increases exponentially over distance in a 3D magnetic field. According to Boozer, this feature makes 3D field-line mapping chaotic and exponentially sensitive to small non-ideal effects; consequently, 3D reconnection can occur without intense current sheets. We test Boozer's theory via ideal and resistive reduced magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the …

We use 3D fully kinetic particle-in-cell simulations to study the occurrence of magnetic reconnection in a simulation of decaying turbulence created by anisotropic counter-propagating low-frequency Alfvén waves consistent with critical-balance theory. We observe the formation of small-scale current-density structures such as current filaments and current sheets as well as the formation of magnetic flux ropes as part of the turbulent cascade. The large magnetic structures present in the simulation domain retain the initial anisotropy while the small-scale structures produced by the turbulent ca…
In the interaction of high-power laser beams with solid density plasma there are a number of mechanisms that generate strong magnetic fields. Such fields subsequently inhibit or redirect electron flows, but can themselves be advected by heat fluxes, resulting in complex interplay between thermal transport and magnetic fields. We show that for heating by multiple laser spots reconnection of magnetic field lines can occur, mediated by these heat fluxes, using a fully implicit 2D Vlasov-Fokker-Planck code. Under such conditions, the reconnection rate is dictated by heat flows rather than Alfvènic …
Although turbulence has been conjectured to be important for magnetic reconnection, still very little is known about its role in collisionless plasmas. Previous attempts to quantify the effect of turbulence on reconnection usually prescribed Alfvénic or other low-frequency fluctuations or investigated collisionless kinetic effects in just two-dimensional configurations and antiparallel magnetic fields. In view of this, we analyzed the kinetic turbulence self-generated by three-dimensional guide-field reconnection through force-free current sheets in frequency and wavenumber spaces, utilizing 3…
