An attempt is made in this work to decompose the "strange attractor like" seismic electric precursor into more simple and elementary components. The basic data files of the orthogonal (NS, EW) components of the Earth's electric field used for the compilation of the corresponding phase maps are decomposed by a joint non-linear inversion scheme into two basic oscillating electric fields. The first one, called "signal", is attributed to a single current source while the second, called "noise", is attributed to the mix-up of some regional and randomly located current sources. The comparison of the phase maps compiled from the raw data files to the ones compiled by the "signal" and "noise" data shows that the newly compiled "strange attractor like" phase maps preserve their predictive property while their appearance resembles simpler geometrical shapes (pure hyperbolas and ellipses). Moreover, it is postulated that its generating mechanism is the stress waves applied in the regional area by the combined interaction of the Sun, Moon and Earth (tidal waves). The latter mechanism, when the seismogenic area is under critical stress-charge conditions, triggers new current sources at places where the stress has reached locally critical stress levels and hence the "strange attractor like" seismic precursor is generated.
Despite the enormous efforts towards searching for precursors, no precursors have exhibited real predictive power with respect to an earthquake thus far. Seismogenic locked segments that can accumulate adequate strain energy to cause major earthquakes are very heterogeneous and less brittle; progressive failures of the locked segments with these properties can produce an interesting seismic phenomenon: a characteristic earthquake and a sequence of smaller subsequent earthquakes (pre-shocks) always arise prior to another characteristic earthquake within a well-defined seismic zone and its curre…
The normalized raw data of the Earth's electric field, monitored at PYR, ATH, HIO monitoring sites in Greece, are studied as far as it concerns the presence of electric seismic precursors. Electric preseismic pulses, plateau-like anomalous electric field and Very Long Period (VLP) anomalies were detected prior to the occurrence of the July 1st, 2009 large (Ms = 6.3R) EQ in Greece. Further processing of the same data revealed the true form of the generated preseimic potential thus providing an indirect estimation of the time window of the occurrence of the large EQ. Finally, by correlating, at …
Phase maps, of the earth's electric field monitored at PYR and ATH monitoring sites in Greece, were compiled for two distinct oscillating earth's electric field components long before, during and after the Nafpactos EQs in Greece (January 18th and 22nd of 2010, Ms = 5.7 / 5.6R). The selected periods of the earth's oscillating electric field were the T = 1 day and T = 14 days. The specific components were selected due to the fact that they are highly depended from the corresponding same period tidal waves (M1, K1, P1). It was found that the "strange attractor like" electric seismic precursor pr…
During earthquakes preparation periods significant disturbances in the ionospheric plasma density are often observed. These anomalies are caused by lithosphere-atmosphere-ionosphere interaction, particularly by the seismic electric field penetrating from the ground surface into the ionosphere. The seismic electric field produces electromagnetic EB drift changing plasma density over the epicenter region and magnetically conjugated area. The paper is devoted to analysis of regular Global Positioning System observations and revelation of seismo-ionospheric precursors of earthquakes in Total Elect…
The reliable statistical characterization of the spatial and temporal properties of large earthquakes occurrence is one of the most debated issues in seismic hazard assessment, due to the unavoidably limited observations from past events. We show that pattern recognition techniques, which are designed in a formal and testable way, may provide significant space-time constraints about impending strong earthquakes. This information, when combined with physically sound methods for ground shaking computation, like the neo-deterministic approach (NDSHA), may produce effectively preventive seismic ha…
A hanging glacier at the east face of Weisshorn broke off in 2005. We were able to monitor and measure surface motion and icequake activity for 21 days up to three days prior to the break-off. Results are presented from the analysis of seismic waves generated by the glacier during the rupture maturation process. Three types of precursory signals of the imminent catastrophic rupture were identified: (i) an increasing seismic activity within the glacier, (ii) a change in the size-frequency distribution of icequake energy, and (iii) a log-periodic oscillating behavior superimposed on power law ac…
In this paper we show that the simple analysis of the local geomagnetic field behaviour can serve as reliable imminent precursor for regional seismic activity increasing. As the first step the problem was investigated using one- component Dubna fluxgate magnetometer. The result of 2001-2004 Sofia monitoring confirmed many old papers for connection between Earth tide (Sun- Moon tides as earthquakes trigger) and jump (Geomagnetic quake) of daily averaged one minute standart deviation of the geomagnetic field. The second step (2004-present), which included analisys of three-component Danish fluxg…
The starting point of the present review is to acknowledge that there are innumerable reports of non-seismic types of earthquake precursory phenomena that are intermittent and seem not to occur systematically, while associated reports are not widely accepted by the geoscience community at large because no one could explain their origins. We review a unifying theory for a solid-state mechanism, based on decades of research bridging semi-conductor physics, chemistry and rock physics. A synthesis has emerged that all pre-earthquake phenomena could trace back to one fundamental physical process: t…
In this paper we present an approach for forecasting the imminent regional seismic activity by using geomagnetic data and Earth tide data. The time periods of seismic activity are the time periods around the Sun-Moon extreme of the diurnal average value of the tide vector module. For analyzing the geomagnetic data behaviour we use diurnal standard deviation of geomagnetic vector components F for calculating the time variance Geomag Signal. The Sun storm influence is avoided by using data for daily A-indexes (published by NOAA). The precursor signal for forecasting the incoming regional seismic…
A phenomenological systems approach for identifying potential precursors in multiple signals of different types for the same local seismically active region is proposed based on the assumption that a large earthquake may be preceded by a system reconfiguration (preparation) at different time and space scales. A nonstationarity factor introduced within the framework of flicker-noise spectroscopy, a statistical physics approach to the analysis of time series, is used as the dimensionless criterion for detecting qualitative (precursory) changes within relatively short time intervals in arbitrary …
The recent large EQ that occurred in Greece (April 1st, 2011, Ms = 6.7R) is investigated as far as it concerns regional geophysical features of the Greek territory. In particular, the EQ location is compared to the deep lithospheric fracture zones and faults, derived from the analysis of the corresponding earth's gravity field; to the current seismic potential map determined from the study of the past seismicity, while its time of occurrence is compared to the peaks of the M1 and diurnal tidal waves. The detailed investigation of the earth's electric field that was recorded by the ATH monitori…
Based on several empirical evidence, a series of papers has advocated the concept that seismicity prior to a large earthquake can be understood in terms of the statistical physics of a critical phase transition. In this model, the cumulative Benioff strain (BS) increases as a power-law time-to-failure before the final event. This power law reflects a kind of scale invariance with respect to the distance to the critical point. A few years ago, on the basis of a fit of the cumulative BS released prior to the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, Sornette and Sammis [1995] proposed that this scale invaria…
The Andravida EQ, Greece (8/6/2008, Ms=7.0R) seismic parameters: location, time of occurrence and magnitude were determined "a posteriori" in an attempt to verify the predictability of the large EQs. The Earth's electric field, after its processing by de-noising techniques, was used, in conjunction with appropriate physical models, for the determination of the epicenter by triangulation. The time of occurrence was determined in very short-term mode by the use of the tidal waves (M1, K1) and the "strange attractor like" seismic electric precursor, while its magnitude was calculated by the appli…
We introduce the first fully self-consistent model combining the seismic micro-ruptures occurring within a generalized Burridge-Knopoff spring-block model with the nucleation and propagation of electric charge pulses within a coupled mechano-electrokinetic system. This model provides a general theoretical framework for modeling and analyzing geoelectric precursors to earthquakes. In particular, it can reproduce the unipolar pulses that have often been reported before large seismic events, as well as various observed anomalies in the statistical moments of the ambient electric fields and the po…
The "strange attractor like" precursor, calculated from the Earth's oscillating electric field registered at PYR and HIO monitoring sites located in Greece, is studied in the domain of T = 14 days. It is assumed that the generating precursory signals focal mechanism is triggered by the corresponding M1 (moon declination) tidal wave. The obtained results from the analysis of eight (8) cases of large (Ms>6.0R) EQs that occurred from March 18th, 2006 to November 17th, 2008 suggest the validity of the method. Moreover, it is found that the specific methodology applied for T = 14 days behaves very …
We report on a novel stochastic analysis of seismic time series for the Earth's vertical velocity, by using methods originally developed for complex hierarchical systems, and in particular for turbulent flows. Analysis of the fluctuations of the detrended increments of the series reveals a pronounced change of the shapes of the probability density functions (PDF) of the series' increments. Before and close to an earthquake the shape of the PDF and the long-range correlation in the increments both manifest significant changes. For a moderate or large-size earthquake the typical time at which th…
In order to investigate the capability of the preseismic electric field "strange attractor like" precursor as a time predictor of a large EQ within a short time window (short-term prediction), the specific methodology was applied on the Earth's electric field recorded during a rather long seismically active period (December 1st, 2007 - April 30th, 2008) of Greece. During this period of time a number (8) of large (Ms > 5.5R) earthquakes took place. The particular analysis is presented in detail for the following EQs: the Monemvasia EQ (January 6th 2008, Ms = 6.6R), the Methoni EQs (February 14t…
In this work the preseismic "strange attractor like" precursor is studied, in the domain of the Earth's oscillating electric field for T = 6 months. It is assumed that the specific oscillating electric field is generated by the corresponding lithospheric oscillation, triggered by the Ssa tidal wave of the same wave length (6 months) under excess strain load conditions met in the focal area of a future large earthquake. The analysis of the recorded Earth's oscillating electric field by the two distant monitoring sites of PYR and HIO and for a period of time of 26 months (October 1st, 2006 - Dec…
This research presents one possible way for imminent prediction of earthquake magnitude, depth and epicenter coordinates by solving the inverse problem using a data acquisition network system for monitoring, archiving and complex analysis of geophysical variables precursors. Among many possible precursors the most reliable are the geoelectromagnetic field, the boreholes water level, the radon surface concentration, the local heat flow, the ionosphere variables, the low frequency atmosphere and Earth core waves. In this study only geomagnetic data are used. Within the framework of geomagnetic q…
We propose a novel method for analyzing precursory seismic data before an earthquake that treats them as a Markov process and distinguishes the background noise from real fluctuations due to an earthquake. A short time (on the order of several hours) before an earthquake the Markov time scale $t_M$ increases sharply, hence providing an alarm for an impending earthquake. To distinguish a false alarm from a reliable one, we compute a second quantity, $T_1$, based on the concept of extended self-similarity of the data. $T_1$ also changes strongly before an earthquake occurs. An alarm is accepted …
A search for the possible precursors of an earthquake and its effect on the data series of diverse geophysical parameters has been made in the mountain of Northern Tien Shan. The complex installation included the NM64 type neutron supermonitor, detectors of the environmental low-energy neutrons, the scintillation gamma-detector, the sensor of the local electric field, a seismograph, and a weather-station. The specialized data filtration methodic was elaborated with an enhanced sensitivity to the transient signals of seismic origin. On the eve of, and after a 5.4 magnitude earthquake the fine f…
