We propose a model to explain the reduced bimolecular recombination rate found in state-of-the-art bulk heterojunction solar cells. When compared to the Langevin recombination, the experimentally observed rate is one to four orders of magnitude lower, but gets closer to the Langevin case for low temperatures. Our model considers the organic solar cell as device with carrier concentration gradients, which form due to the electrode/blend/electrode device configuration. The resulting electron concentration under working conditions of a solar cell is higher at the cathode than at the anode, and vice versa for holes. Therefore, the spatially dependent bimolecular recombination rate, proportional to the local product of electron and hole concentration, is much lower as compared to the calculation of the recombination rate based on the extracted and thus averaged charge carrier concentrations. We consider also the temperature dependence of the recombination rate, which can for the first time be described with our model.
In halide perovskites, electrons (holes) exist as electronic (hole) polarons, excitons, free and trapped electrons (holes). Six kinds of collisions could lead to annihilation of electron and hole, three of them involve polaron(s). In the annihilation channel of each collision process, there is a certain probability to form a dying pair which the average distance between electron and hole is smaller than a critical distance. The annihilation probability per unit time of a collision process is a product of the formation probability of the dying pair in the annihilation channel and the annihilati…
Charge-transfer polaron induced negative differential resistance and giant magnetoresistance in organic spintronics: A Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model study
We report a theoretical description and experimental implementation of a novel two-dimensional coherent excitation spectroscopy based on quasi-steady-state photoinduced absorption measurement of a long-lived nonlinear population. We have studied a semiconductor-polymer:fullerene-derivative distributed heterostructure by measuring the 2D excitation spectrum by means of photoluminescence, photocurrent and photoinduced absorption from metastable polaronic products. We conclude that the photoinduced absorption probe is a viable and valuable probe in this family of 2D coherent spectroscopies.
The unique properties of organic semiconductors make them versatile base materials for many applications ranging from light emitting diodes to transistors. The low spin-orbit coupling typical for carbon-based materials and the resulting long spin lifetimes give rise to a large influence of the electron spin on charge transport which can be exploited in spintronic devices or to improve solar cell efficiencies. Magnetic resonance techniques are particularly helpful to elucidate the microscopic structure of paramagnetic states in semiconductors as well as the transport processes they are involved…
We use spectrally-resolved magneto-electroluminescence (EL) measurements to study the energy dependence of hyperfine interactions between polaron and nuclear spins in organic LEDs. Using layered devices based on Bphen/MTDATA -- a well-known exciplex emitter -- we show that the increase in EL emission intensity $I$ due to small applied magnetic fields of order 100 mT is markedly larger at the high-energy blue end of the EL spectrum (dI/I ~11%) than at the low-energy red end (~4%). Concurrently, the widths of the magneto-EL curves increase monotonically from blue to red, revealing an increasing …
Predicting the electrical properties of organic molecular crystals (OMCs) is challenging due to their complex crystal structures and electron-phonon (e-ph) interactions. Charge transport in OMCs is conventionally categorized into two limiting regimes $-$ band transport, characterized by weak e-ph interactions, and charge hopping due to localized polarons formed by strong e-ph interactions. However, between these two limiting cases there is a less well understood intermediate regime where polarons are present but transport does not occur via hopping. Here we show a many-body first-principles ap…
The recombination of charges is an important process in organic photonic devices because the process influences the device characteristics such as the driving voltage, efficiency and lifetime. By combining the dipole trap theory with the drift-diffusion model, we report that the stationary dipole moment (μ0) of the dopant is a major factor determining the recombination mechanism in the dye-doped organic light emitting diodes when the trap depth (ΔEt) is larger than 0.3 eV where any de-trapping effect becomes negligible. Dopants with large μ0 (e.g., homoleptic Ir(III) dyes) induce large charge …
Quantifying the spin-spin interactions which influence electronic transitions in organic semiconductors is crucial for understanding their magneto-optoelectronic properties. By combining a theoretical model for three spin interactions in the coherent regime with pulsed electrically detected magnetic resonance experiments on MEH-PPV diodes, we quantify the spin-coupling within complexes comprising three spin-half particles. We determine that these particles form triplet-exciton:polaron pairs, where the polaron:exciton exchange is over 5 orders of magnitude weaker (less than 170 MHz) than that w…
Charge carrier recombination is studied in operational organic solar cells made from the polymer:fullerene system PCDTBT:PC71BM (poly[N-9"-heptadecanyl-2,7-carbazole-alt-5,5-(4',7'-di-2-thienyl-2',1',3'-benzothiadiazole)] : [6,6]-phenyl-C$_{70}$-butyric acid methyl ester). A newly developed technique High Intensity Resistance dependent PhotoVoltage (HI-RPV) is presented for reliably quantifying the bimolecular recombination coefficient independently of variations in experimental conditions, thereby resolving key limitations of previous experimental approaches. Experiments are performed on sola…
Exciton and polaron pair dissociation is a key functional aspect of photovoltaic devices. To improve upon the current state of interfacial transport models, we augment the existing classical models of dielectric interfaces by incorporating results from ab initio calculations, allowing us to calculate exciton and polaron binding energies more accurately. We demonstrate the predictive capabilities of this new model using two interfaces: (i) the boron subphthalocyanine chloride (SubPc) and C60 interface, which is an archetype for many organic photovoltaic devices; and (ii) pentacene and silicon (…
The kinetics of the charge carrier recombination in dye molecule-doped multilayer organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) was quantified by transient electroluminescence (EL). Three sets of dye molecules, such as derivatives of naphthalimide and stilbene, were used as dopants in light-emission layer. Although the devices show almost the same EL spectra for each set of molecules, they show very different EL efficiency. The difference in EL efficiency was attributed to the difference in charge carrier recombination, as revealed by transient EL. The recombination coefficient (γ) was determined from…
We present a comprehensive model to analyze, quantitatively, and predict the process of degradation of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) considering all possible degradation mechanisms, i.e., polaron, exciton, exciton-polaron interactions, exciton-exciton interactions, and a newly proposed impurity effect. The loss of efficiency during degradation is presented as a function of quencher density, the density and generation mechanisms of which were extracted using a voltage rise model. The comprehensive model was applied to stable blue phosphorescent OLEDs (PhOLEDs), and the results showed th…
The Auger recombination in bulk semiconductors can depopulate the charge carriers in a non-radiative way, which, fortunately, only has detrimental impact on optoelectronic device performance under the condition of high carrier density because the restriction arising from concurrent momentum and energy conservation limits the Auger rate. Here, we surprisingly found that the Auger recombination in bulk Fe2O3 films was more efficient than narrow-bandgap high-mobility semiconductors that were supposed to have much higher Auger rate constants than metal oxides. The Auger process in Fe2O3 was ascrib…
Recombination losses contribute to reduce $J_{SC}$, $V_{OC}$ and the fill factor of organic solar cells. Recent advances in non-fullerene organic photovoltaics have shown, nonetheless, that efficient charge generation can occur under small energetic driving forces ($ΔE_{DA}$) and low recombination losses. To shed light on this issue, we set up a coarse-grained open quantum mechanical model for investigating the charge generation dynamics subject to various energy loss mechanisms. The influence of energetic driving force, Coulomb interaction, vibrational disorder, geminate recombination, temper…
We consider the two-dimensional bimolecular recombination of charge carriers in amorphous organic semiconductors having the lamellar structure. We calculate the dependence of the effective recombination rate constant on the carrier density taking into account the correlated nature of the energetic disorder typical for organic semiconductors. Resulting recombination kinetics demonstrates a very rich variety of behaviors depending on the correlation properties of the particular semiconductor and relevant charge density range.
We consider the bimolecular charge carrier recombination in amorphous organic semiconductors having a special kind of energetic disorder where energy levels for electrons and holes at a given transport site move in the same direction with the variation of some disorder governing parameter (the parallel disorder). This particular kind of disorder could be found in materials where the dominant part of the energetic disorder is provided by the conformational disorder. Contrary to the recently studied case of electrostatic disorder, the conformational disorder, if spatially correlated, leads to th…
We present a unified and nonperturbative method for calculating spectral and transport properties of Hamiltonians with simultaneous Holstein (diagonal) and Peierls (off-diagonal) electron-phonon coupling. Our approach is motivated by the separation of energy scales in semiconducting organic molecular cystals, in which electrons couple to high-frequency intramolecular Holstein modes and to low-frequency intermolecular Peierls modes. We treat Peierls modes as quasi-classical dynamic disorder, while Holstein modes are included with a Lang-Firsov polaron transformation and no narrow-band approxima…
We present a simple model of the bimolecular charge carrier recombination in polar amorphous organic semiconductors where the dominant part of the energetic disorder is provided by permanent dipoles and show that the recombination rate constant could be much smaller than the corresponding Langevin rate constant. The reason for the strong decrease of the rate constant is the long range spatial correlation of the random energy landscape in amorphous dipolar materials, without spatial correlation even strong disorder does not modify the Langevin rate constant. Our study shows that the significant…
The theoretical effects of phase separation on encounter-limited charge carrier recombination in organic semiconductor blends are investigated using kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations of pump-probe experiments. Using model bulk heterojunction morphologies, the dependence of the recombination rate on domain size and charge carrier mobility are quantified. Unifying competing models and simulation results, we show that the mobility dependence of the recombination rate can be described using the power mean of the electron and hole mobilities with a domain size dependent exponent. Additionally, …
Influence of Charge Carrier Mobility on the Performance of Organic Solar Cells
Singlet-polaron and triplet-polaron annihilation mechanisms are the most detrimental exciton quenching processes that lower the efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) at high current densities, causing so-called efficiency roll-off in these devices. These exciton loss mechanisms are also the critical obstacles towards the realization of electrically pumped organic semiconductor lasers, which require very high current densities to reach threshold. Herein, under a relatively large external magnetic field, we demonstrate that the efficiency roll-off at high current densities in europ…
Surface recombination has a major impact on the open-circuit voltage ($V_\text{oc}$) of organic photovoltaics. Here, we study how this loss mechanism is influenced by imbalanced charge transport in the photoactive layer. As a model system, we use organic solar cells with a two orders of magnitude higher electron than hole mobility. We find that small variations in the work function of the anode have a strong effect on the light intensity dependence of $V_\text{oc}$. Transient measurements and drift-diffusion simulations reveal that this is due to a change in the surface recombination rather th…

Metal-organic species can be designed to self-assemble in large-scale, atomically defined, supramolecular architectures. Hybrid quantum wells, where inorganic two-dimensional (2D) planes are separated by organic ligands, are a particular example. The ligands effectively provide an intralayer confinement for charge carriers resulting in a 2D electronic structure, even in multilayered assemblies. Air-stable metal organic chalcogenides hybrid quantum wells have recently been found to host tightly bound 2D excitons with strong optical anisotropy in a bulk matrix. Here, we investigate the excited c…
We investigate nongeminate recombination in organic solar cells based on copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and C$_{60}$. Two device architectures, the planar heterojunction (PHJ) and the bulk heterojunction (BHJ), are directly compared in view of differences in charge carrier decay dynamics. We apply a combination of transient photovoltage (TPV) experiments, yielding the small perturbation charge carrier lifetime, and charge extraction measurements, providing the charge carrier density. In organic solar cells, charge photogeneration and recombination primarily occur at the donor--acceptor heteroint…
The effect of a magnetic field on the electroluminescence of organic light emitting devices originates from the hyperfine interaction between the electron/hole polarons and the hydrogen nuclei of the host molecules. In this paper, we present an analytical theory of magneto-electroluminescence for organic semiconductors. To be specific, we focus on bilayer heterostructure devices. In the case we are considering, light generation at the interface of the donor and acceptor layers results from the formation and recombination of exciplexes. The spin physics is described by a stochastic Liouville eq…
Owing to both electronic and dielectric confinement effects, two-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites sustain strongly bound excitons at room temperature. Here, we demonstrate that there are non-negligible contributions to the excitonic correlations that are specific to the lattice structure and its polar fluctuations, both of which are controlled via the chemical nature of the organic counter-cation. We present a phenomenological, yet quantitative framework to simulate excitonic absorption lineshapes in single-layer organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites, based on the two-dimensiona…
The understanding of the Physics underlying the performances of organic spin-valve devices is still incomplete. According to some recent models, spin transport takes place in an impurity band inside the fundamental gap of organic semiconductors. This seems to be confirmed by recent experiments performed with La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$/Alq$_3$/AlO$_x$/Co devices. The reported results suggest a possible correlation between the magnetoresistance and the variable oxygen doping in the Alq$_3$ spacer. In this paper we investigate by means of first-principles calculations the electronic and magnetic…
Understanding how the complex intermolecular- and nano-structure present in organic semiconductor donor-acceptor blends impacts charge carrier motion, interactions, and recombination behavior is a critical fundamental issue with a particularly major impact on organic photovoltaic applications. In this study, kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations are used to numerically quantify the complex bimolecular charge carrier recombination behavior in idealized phase-separated blends. Recent KMC simulations have identified how the encounter-limited bimolecular recombination rate in these blends deviates…
