In this paper we study the Dirichlet problem for fully nonlinear second-order equations on a riemannian manifold. As in a previous paper we define equations via closed subsets of the 2-jet bundle. Basic existence and uniqueness theorems are established in a wide variety of settings. However, the emphasis is on starting with a constant coefficient equation as a model, which then universally determines an equation on every riemannian manifold which is equipped with a topological reduction of the structure group to the invariance group of the model. For example, this covers all branches of the homogeneous complex Monge-Ampere equation on an almost complex hermitian manifold X.
In general, for an equation F on a manifold X and a smooth domain D in X, we give geometric conditions which imply that the Dirichlet problem on D is uniquely solvable for all continuous boundary functions. We begin by introducing a weakened form of comparison which has the advantage that local implies global. We then associate to F two natural "conical subequations": a monotonicity subequation M and the asymptotic interior of F. If X carries a global M-subharmonic function, then weak comparison implies full comparison. The asymptotic interior of F is used to formulate boundary convexity and provide barriers. In combination the Dirichlet problem becomes uniquely solvable as claimed.
A considerable portion of the paper is concerned with specific examples. They include a wide variety of equations which make sense on any riemannian manifold, and many which hold universally on almost complex or quaternionic hermitian manifolds, or topologically calibrated manifolds.
We derive the existence of $C^{1,1}$-solutions to the Dirichlet problem for degenerate fully nonlinear elliptic equations on Riemannian manifolds under appropriate assumptions.
In this short paper we show a sufficient condition for the solvability of the Dirichlet problem at infinity in Riemannian cones (as defined below). This condition is related to a celebrated result of Milnor that classifies parabolic surfaces. When applied tosmooth Riemannian manifolds with a special type of metrics (which generalise rotational symmetry) we obtain generalisations of classical criteria for the solvability of the Dirichlet problem at infinity. Our proof is short and elementary: it uses separation of variables and comparison arguments for ODE's.
We study the Dirichlet problem for fully nonlinear, degenerate elliptic equations of the form f(Hess, u)=0 on a smoothly bounded domain D in R^n. In our approach the equation is replaced by a subset F of the space of symmetric nxn-matrices, with bdy(F) contined in the set {f=0}. We establish the existence and uniqueness of continuous solutions under an explicit geometric ``F-convexity'' assumption on the boundary bdy(F). The topological structure of F-convex domains is also studied and a theorem of Andreotti-Frankel type is proved for them. Two key ingredients in the analysis are the use of su…
In this paper, we study existence and uniqueness of solutions to Jenkins-Serrin type problems on domains in a Riemannian surface. In the case of unbounded domains, the study is focused on the hyperbolic plane.
This article studies the Dirichlet problem for a class of degenerate fully nonlinear elliptic equations on Riemannian manifolds with \textit{mean concave} boundary in the sense that the mean curvature of the boundary is \textit{nonpositive}. The proof is primarily based on a quantitative boundary estimate. Also, we obtain analogous results in complex variables. In Appendix, the subsolutions are also constructed on certain topologically product manifolds.
We solve the Dirichlet problem for fully nonlinear elliptic equations on Riemannian manifolds under essentially optimal structure conditions, especially with no restrictions to the curvature of the underlying manifold and the second fundamental form of its boundary. The main result (Theorem 1.1) includes a new (and optimal) result in the Euclidean case. We introduce some new ideas and methods in deriving a priori estimates, which can be used to treat other types of fully nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations on real or complex manifolds.
We investigate existence and uniqueness of bounded solutions of parabolic equations with unbounded coefficients in $M\times \mathbb R_+$, where $M$ is a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold. Under specific assumptions, we establish existence of solutions satisfying prescribed conditions at infinity, depending on the direction along which infinity is approached. Moreover, the large-time behavior of such solutions is studied. We consider also elliptic equations on $M$ with similar conditions at infinity.
In this paper, we derive $C^2$ estimates for a class of mixed Hessian type equations with Dirichlet boundary condition, and obtain the existence theorem of admissible solutions for the classical Dirichlet problem of these mixed Hessian type equations.
In this paper, we consider the Dirichlet problem for a class of Hessian quotient equations on Riemannian manifolds. Under the assumption of an admissible subsolution, we solve the existence and the uniquness for the Dirichlet problem in a domain without any geometric restrictions on the boundary, based on the a priori estimates for the solutions to the Hessian quotient type equations.
We obtain a criterion for the existence of solutions of the problem $$ Δ_p u = 0 \quad \mbox{in } M \setminus \partial M, \quad \left. u \right|_{ \partial M } = h, $$ with the bounded Dirichlet integral, where $M$ is an oriented complete Riemannian manifold with boundary and $h \in W_{p, loc}^1 (M)$, $p > 1$.
In this article, we first show that for all compact Riemannian manifolds with non-empty smooth boundary and dimension at least 3, there exists a metric, pointwise conformal to the original metric, with constant scalar curvature in the interior, and constant scalar curvature on the boundary by considering the boundary as a manifold of its own with dimension at least 2. We then show a series of prescribed scalar curvature results in the interior and on the boundary, with pointwise conformal deformation. These type of results is both an analogy and an extension of Kazdan and Warner's "Trichotomy …
It is well known that the Serrin condition is a necessary condition for the solvability of the Dirichlet problem for the prescribed mean curvature equation in bounded domains of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with certain regularity. In this paper we investigate the sharpness of the Serrin condition for the vertical mean curvature equation in the product $ M^n \times \mathbb{R} $. Precisely, given a $\mathscr{C}^2$ bounded domain $Ω$ in $M$ and a function $ H = H (x, z) $ continuous in $\overlineΩ\times\mathbb{R}$ and non-decreasing in the variable $z$, we prove that the strong Serrin condition $(n-1)\mathcal…
We study constant mean curvature graphs in the Riemannian 3-dimensional Heisenberg spaces ${\cal H}={\cal H}(τ)$. Each such ${\cal H}$ is the total space of a Riemannian submersion onto the Euclidean plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ with geodesic fibers the orbits of a Killing field. We prove the existence and uniqueness of CMC graphs in ${\cal H}$ with respect to the Riemannian submersion over certain domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ taking on prescribed boundary values.
On a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary, the absolute and relative cohomology groups appear as certain subspaces of harmonic forms. DeTurck and Gluck showed that these concrete realizations of the cohomology groups decompose into orthogonal subspaces corresponding to cohomology coming from the interior and boundary of the manifold. The principal angles between these interior subspaces are all acute and are called Poincare duality angles. This paper determines the Poincare duality angles of a collection of interesting manifolds with boundary derived from complex projective spaces and fro…
Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain with $C^2$-smooth boundary in an $n$-dimensional oriented Riemannian manifold. It is well-known that for the bi-harmonic equation $Δ^2 u=0$ in $Ω$ with the $0$-Dirichlet boundary condition, there exists an infinite set $\{u_k\}$ of biharmonic functions in $Ω$ with positive eigenvalues $\{λ_k\}$ satisfying $Δu_k+ λ_k \varrho \frac{\partial u_k}{\partial ν}=0$ on the boundary $\partial Ω$. In this paper, by a new method we establish the Weyl-type asymptotic formula for the counting function of the biharmonic Stekloff eigenvalues $λ_k$.
In this paper we consider the inverse problem of determining on a compact Riemannian manifold the electric potential and the absorption coefficient in the wave equation with Dirichlet data from measured Neumann boundary observations. This information is enclosed in the dynamical Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to the wave equation. We prove in dimension $n \geq 2$ that the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the wave equation uni
This paper is devoted to investigate the heat trace asymptotic expansion corresponding to the magnetic Steklov eigenvalue problem on Riemannian manifolds with boundary. We establish an effective procedure, by which we can calculate all the coefficients $a_0$, $a_1$, $\dots$, $a_{n-1}$ of the heat trace asymptotic expansion. In particular, we explicitly give the expressions for the first four coefficients. These coefficients are spectral invariants which provide precise information concerning the volume and curvatures of the boundary of the manifold and some physical quantities by the magnetic …
In this paper we prove a sub-Riemannian version of the classical Santaló formula: a result in integral geometry that describes the intrinsic Liouville measure on the unit cotangent bundle in terms of the geodesic flow. Our construction works under quite general assumptions, satisfied by any sub-Riemannian structure associated with a Riemannian foliation with totally geodesic leaves (e.g. CR and QC manifolds with symmetries), any Carnot group, and some non-equiregular structures such as the Martinet one. A key ingredient is a "reduction procedure" that allows to consider only a simple subset of…
We consider the inverse problem to determine a smooth compact Riemannian manifold with boundary $(M, g)$ from a restriction $Λ_{\Src, \Rec}$ of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator for the wave equation on the manifold. Here $\Src$ and $\Rec$ are open sets in $\p M$ and the restriction $Λ_{\Src, \Rec}$ corresponds to the case where the Dirichlet data is supported on $\R_+\times \Src$ and the Neumann data is measured on $\R_+\times \Rec$. In the novel case where $\bar \Src \cap \bar \Rec = \emptyset$, we show that $Λ_{\Src, \Rec}$ determines the manifold $(M,g)$ uniquely, assuming that the wave eq…
The main result of this note is the existence of martingale solutions to the stochastic heat equation (SHE) in a Riemannian manifold by using suitable Dirichlet forms on the corresponding path/loop space. Moreover, we present some characterizations of the lower bound of the Ricci curvature by functional inequalities of various associated Dirichlet forms.
In a cylinder $D_T = Ω\times (0,T)$, where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, we examine the relation between the $L$-caloric measure, $dω^{(x,t)}$, where $L$ is the heat operator associated with a system of vector fields of Hörmander type, and the measure $dσ_X\times dt$, where $dσ_X$ is the intrinsic $X$-perimeter measure. The latter constitutes the appropriate replacement for the standard surface measure on the boundary and plays a central role in sub-Riemannian geometric measure theory. Under suitable assumptions on the domain $Ω$ we establish the mutual absolute continuity of $dω^{(x,t)}$ and $dσ_X…
We show that the degenerate special Lagrangian equation, recently introduced by Rubinstein-Solomon, induces a global equation on every Riemannian manifold, and that for certain associated geometries this equation governs, as it does in the Euclidean setting, geodesics in the space of positive Lagrangians. For example, geodesics in the space of positive Lagrangian sections of a smooth Calabi-Yau torus fibration are governed by the Riemannian DSL on the base manifold. We then develop their analytic techniques, specifically modifications of the Dirichlet duality theory of Harvey-Lawson, in the Ri…
We give a new estimate on the lower bound of the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of a compact Riemannian manifold with negative lower bound of Ricci curvature and provide a solution for a conjecture of H. C. Yang.
In this paper, the elastic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map $Ξ_g$ is studied for the stationary elasticity system in a compact Riemannian manifold $(Ω,g)$ with smooth boundary $\partial Ω$. By overcoming methodological difficulties, we explicitly get matrix-valued full symbol for the elastic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map $Ξ_g$. We prove that for a strong convex or extendable real-analytic manifold with boundary, the elastic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map $Ξ_g$ uniquely determines the metric $g$ of $Ω$ in the sense of isometry, thereby solving an open problem for the uniqueness of the metric under real-analytic s…
In this paper, we prove the existence of martingale solutions to the stochastic heat equation taking values in a Riemannian manifold, which admits Wiener (Brownian bridge) measure on the Riemannian path (loop) space as an invariant measure using a suitable Dirichlet form. Using the Andersson-Driver approximation, we heuristically derive a form of the equation solved by the process given by the Dirichlet form. Moreover, we establish the log-Sobolev inequality for the Dirichlet form in the path space. In addition, some characterizations for the lower bounds of the Ricci curvature are presented r…
We study the sharp doubling inequalities for the gradients and upper bounds for the critical sets of Dirichlet eigenfunctions on the boundary and in the interior of compact Riemannian manifolds. Most efforts are devoted to obtaining the sharp doubling inequalities for the gradients. New technique is developed to overcome the difficulties on the unavailability of the double manifold in obtaining doubling inequalities in smooth manifolds. The sharp upper bounds of critical sets in analytic Riemannian manifolds are consequences of the doubling inequalities.
In this paper we consider determining a minimal surface embedded in a Riemannian manifold $Σ\times \mathbb{R}$. We show that if $Σ$ is a two dimensional Riemannian manifold with boundary, then the knowledge of the associated Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the minimal surface equation determine $Σ$ up to an isometry.
In this work we consider viscosity solutions to second order partial differential equations on Riemannian manifolds. We prove maximum principles for solutions to Dirichlet problem on a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. Using a different method, we generalize maximum principles of Omori and Yau to a viscosity version.
This paper deals with symmetry phenomena for solutions of the Dirichlet problem involving semilinear PDEs on Riemannian domains. We shall present a rather general framework where the symmetry problem can be formulated and provide some evidence that this framework is completely natural by pointing out some results for stable solutions. The case of manifolds with density, and corresponding weighted Laplacians, is inserted in the picture from the very beginning.
We obtain upper bounds on the heat content and on the torsional rigidity of a complete Riemannian manifold M, assuming a generalized Hardy inequality for the Dirichlet Laplacian on M.
Let $(M,g)$ be a smooth compact orientable two-dimensional Riemannian manifold ({\it surface}) with a smooth metric tensor $g$ and smooth connected boundary $Γ$. Its {\it DN-map} $Λ_g:{C^\infty}(Γ)\to{C^\infty}(Γ)$ is associated with the (forward) elliptic problem $ Δ_gu=0 \,\,\, {\rm in}\,\,M\setminusΓ,\,\,u=f \,\,\, {\rm on}\,\,\,Γ$, and acts by $ Λ_g f:=\partial_νu^f \,\,\, {\rm on}\,\,\,Γ, $ where $Δ_g$ is the Beltrami-Laplace operator, $u=u^f(x)$ is the solution, $ν$ is the outward normal to $Γ$. The corresponding {\it inverse problem} is to determine the surface $(M,g)$ from its DN-map $…
We derive a priori second order estimates for solutions of a class of fully nonlinear elliptic equations on Riemannian manifolds under some very general structure conditions. We treat both equations on closed manifolds, and the Dirichlet problem on manifolds with boundary without any geometric restrictions to the boundary except being smooth and compact. As applications of these estimates we obtain results on regularity and existence.
Given two Jordan curves in a Riemannian manifold, a minimal surface of annulus type bounded by these curves is described as the harmonic extension of a critical point of some functional (the Dirichlet integral) in a certain space of boundary parametrizations. The $H^{2,2}$-regularity of the minimal surface of annulus type will be proved by applying the critical points theory and Morrey's growth condition.
In this paper, we establish a min-max theory for constructing minimal disks with free boundary in any closed Riemannian manifold. The main result is an effective version of the partial Morse theory for minimal disks with free boundary established by Fraser. Our theory also includes as a special case the min-max theory for Plateau problem of minimal disks, which can be used to generalize the famous work by Morse-Thompkins and Shiffman on minimal surfaces in $\mathbf{R}^n$ to the Riemannian setting. More precisely, we generalize the min-max construction of minimal surfaces using harmonic replace…
Upper bounds are obtained for the heat content of an open set D in a geodesically complete Riemannian manifold M with Dirichlet boundary condition on bd(D), and non-negative initial condition. We show that these upper bounds are close to being sharp if (i) the Dirichlet-Laplace-Beltrami operator acting in $L^2(D)$ satisfies a strong Hardy inequality with weight $r^2$, (ii) the initial temperature distribution, and the specific heat of D are given by $r^{-a}$ and $r^{-b}$ respectively, where $r$ is the distance to the boundary, and 1<a<2, 1<b<2.
We introduce a new algorithm to construct travel time distances between a point in the interior of a Riemannian manifold and points on the boundary of the manifold, and describe a numerical implementation of the algorithm. It is known that the travel time distances for all interior points determine the Riemannian manifold in a stable manner. We do not assume that there are sources or receivers in the interior, and use the hyperbolic Neumann-to-Dirichlet map, or its restriction, as our data. Our algorithm is a variant of the Boundary Control method, and to our knowledge, this is the first numer…
In this paper, we investigate the Dirichlet problem of Laplacian on complete Riemannian manifolds. By constructing new trial functions, we obtain a sharp upper bound of the gap of the consecutive eigenvalues in the sense of the order, which affirmatively answers to a conjecture proposed by Chen-Zheng-Yang. In addition, we also exploit the closed eigenvalue problem of Laplacian and obtain a similar optimal upper bound. As some important examples, we investigate the eigenvalues of the eigenvalue problem of the Laplacian on the unit sphere and cylinder, compact homogeneous Riemannian manifolds wi…
We shall discuss the inhomogeneous Dirichlet problem for: $f(x,u, Du, D^2u) = ψ(x)$ where $f$ is a "natural" differential operator, with a restricted domain $F$, on a manifold $X$. By "natural" we mean operators that arise intrinsically from a given geometry on $X$. An important point is that the equation need not be convex and can be highly degenerate. Furthermore, the inhomogeneous term can take values at the boundary of the restricted domain $F$ of the operator $f$. A simple example is the real Monge-Ampère operator ${\rm det}({\rm Hess}\,u) = ψ(x)$ on a riemannian manifold $X$, where ${\rm…
In this paper we consider the inverse problem of determining on a compact Riemannian manifold the metric tensor in the wave equation with Dirichlet data from measured Neumann boundary observations. This information is enclosed in the dynamical Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to the wave equation. We prove in dimension $n\geq 2$ that the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the wave equation uniquely determines the metric tensor and we establish logarithm-type stability.

The Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for differential forms on a Riemannian manifold with boundary is a generalization of the classical Dirichlet-to-Neumann map which arises in the problem of Electrical Impedance Tomography. We synthesize the two different approaches to defining this operator by giving an invariant definition of the complete Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for differential forms in terms of two linear operators Φ and Ψ. The pair (Φ, Ψ) is equivalent to Joshi and Lionheart's operator Π and determines Belishev and Sharafutdinov's operator Λ. We show that the Betti numbers of the manifold are d…
We obtain Harnack estimates for a class of curvature flows in Riemannian manifolds of constant non-negative sectional curvature as well as in the Lorentzian Minkowski and de Sitter spaces. Furthermore, we prove a Harnack estimate with a bonus term for mean curvature flow in locally symmetric Riemannian Einstein manifold of non-negative sectional curvature. Using a concept of "duality" for strictly convex hypersurfaces, we also obtain a new type of inequalities, so-called "pseudo"-Harnack inequalities, for expanding flows in the sphere and in the hyperbolic space.
Suppose that $M$ is a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary and $u$ is an $L^2$-normalized Dirichlet eigenfunction with eigenvalue $λ$. Let $ψ$ be its normal derivative at the boundary. Scaling considerations lead one to expect that the $L^2$ norm of $ψ$ will grow as $λ^{1/2}$ as $λ\to \infty$. We prove an upper bound of the form $\|ψ\|_2^2 \leq Cλ$ for any Riemannian manifold, and a lower bound $c λ\leq \|ψ\|_2^2$ provided that $M$ has no trapped geodesics (see the main Theorem for a precise statement). Here $c$ and $C$ are positive constants that depend on $M$, but not on $λ$. The proof …
This article is concerned with uniqueness and stability issues for the inverse spectral problem of recovering the magnetic field and the electric potential in a Riemannian manifold from some asymptotic knowledge of the boundary spectral data of the corresponding Schrödinger operator under Dirichlet boundary conditions. The spectral data consist of some asymptotic knowledge of a subset of eigenvalues and Neumann traces of the associated eigenfunctions of the magnetic Laplacian. We also address the same question for Schrödinger operators under Neumann boundary conditions, in which case we measur…
