There exist consistent low energy effective field theories describing gravity in the Higgs phase that allow the coexistence of massive gravitons and the conventional 1/r potential of gravity. In an effort to constrain the value of the graviton mass in these theories, we study the tensor contribution to the CMB temperature anisotropy and polarization spectra in the presence of a non-vanishing graviton mass. We find that the observation of a B-mode signal consistent with the spectrum predicted by inflationary models would provide the strongest limit yet on the mass of an elementary particle -- a graviton -- at a level of m\lesssim 10^(-30) eV\approx(10 Mpc)^(-1). We also find that a graviton mass in the range between (10 Mpc)^(-1) and (10 kpc)^(-1) leads to interesting modifications of the polarization spectrum. The characteristic signature of a graviton mass in this range would be a plateau in the B-mode spectrum up to angular multipoles of l\sim 100. For even larger values of the graviton mass the tensor contribution to the CMB spectra becomes strongly suppressed.
The dispersion relation of graviton is a fundamental issue for fundamental physics about gravity. In this paper we investigate how the modified dispersion relation of graviton affects the cosmic microwave background (CMB) power spectra, in particular the B-mode polarization. Our results will be useful to test the dispersion relation of graviton at the energy scale around $10^{-29}$ eV.
The impact of the existence of gravitons with non-vanishing masses on the B modes of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) is investigated. We also focus on putative modifications to the speed of the gravitational waves. We find that a change of the graviton speed shifts the acoustic peaks of the CMB and then could be easily constrained. For the case of massive gravity, we show analytically how the B modes are sourced in a manner differing from the massless case leading to a plateau at low $l$ in the CMB spectrum. We also study the case when there are more than one graviton, and when pressure …
The diffuse backgrounds of relic gravitons with frequencies ranging between the aHz band and the GHz region encode the ultimate information on the primeval evolution of the plasma and on the underlying theory of gravity well before the electroweak epoch. While the temperature and polarization anisotropies of the microwave background radiation probe the low-frequency tail of the graviton spectra, during the next score year the pulsar timing arrays and the wide-band interferometers (both terrestrial and hopefully space-borne) will explore a much larger frequency window encompassing the nHz domai…
The spectra of the relic gravitons are customarily normalized in the low-frequency domain where the signal of the concordance paradigm is expected to peak and this is why their contribution to the temperature and polarization anisotropies of the microwave background is only described by the tensor to scalar ratio. If the consistency relations are broken, the same strategy is accomplished by introducing the tensor spectral index as a further independent parameter. When the dominant component of the spectral energy density is distributed for frequencies much larger than the aHz, the logic behind…

Tensor non-Gaussianities are a key ingredient to test the symmetries and the presence of higher spin fields during the inflationary epoch. Indeed, the shape of the three point correlator of the graviton is totally fixed by the symmetries of the de Sitter stage and, in the case of parity conservation, gets contributions only from the ordinary gravity action plus a higher derivative term called the (Weyl)$^3$ action. We discuss current and future bounds on the three point tensor contribution from the (Weyl)$^3$ term using cosmic microwave background (CMB) bispectra. Our results indicate that for…
Quasidilaton massive gravity offers a physically well-defined gravitational theory with non-zero graviton mass. We present the full set of dynamical equations governing the expansion history of the universe, valid during radiation domination, matter domination, and a late-time self-accelerating epoch related to the graviton mass. The existence of self-consistent solutions constrains the amplitude of the quasi-dilaton field and the graviton mass, as well as other model parameters. We point out that the effective mass of gravitational waves can be significantly larger than the graviton mass, ope…
We report a $5.3σ$ detection of the gravitational lensing effect of cosmic voids from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic (BOSS) Data Release 12 seen in the $Planck$ 2018 cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing convergence map. To make this detection, we introduce new optimal techniques for void stacking and filtering of the CMB maps, such as binning voids by a combination of their observed galaxy density and size to separate those with distinctive lensing signatures. We calibrate theoretical expectations for the void-lensing signal using mock catalogs generated in a suite of 108 full-sky l…
