In this paper we study a simple example of a two-parameter space of renormalisation group flows of defects in Virasoro minimal models. We use a combination of exact results, perturbation theory and the truncated conformal space approach to search for fixed points and investigate their nature. For the Ising model, we confirm the recent results of Fendley et al. In the case of central charge close to one, we find six fixed points, five of which we can identify in terms of known defects and one of which we conjecture is a new non-trivial conformal defect. We also include several new results on exact properties of perturbed defects and on the renormalisation group in the truncated conformal space approach.
We consider a class of conformal defects in Virasoro minimal models that have been defined as fixed points of the renormalisation group and calculate the leading contribution to the reflection coefficient for these defects. This requires several structure constants of the operator algebra of the defect fields, for which we present a derivation in detail. We compare our results with our recent work on conformal defects in the tricritical Ising model.
Deforming a two dimensional conformal field theory on one side of a trivial defect line gives rise to a defect separating the original theory from its deformation. The Casimir force between these defects and other defect lines or boundaries is used to construct flows on bulk moduli spaces of CFTs. It turns out, that these flows are constant reparametrizations of gradient flows of the g-functions of the chosen defect or boundary condition. The special flows associated to supersymmetric boundary conditions in N=(2,2) superconformal field theories agree with the attractor flows studied in the con…
We show that topological defects in the language of Landau-Ginzburg models carry information about the RG flow between the non-compact orbifolds $\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{Z}_d$. We show that such defects correctly implement the bulk-induced RG flow on the boundary.
We study the effect of bulk perturbations of N=(2,2) superconformal minimal models on topological defects. In particular, symmetries and more general topological defects which survive the flow to the IR are identified. Our method is to consider the topological subsector and make use of the Landau-Ginzburg formulation to describe RG flows and topological defects in terms of matrix factorizations.
Using the properties of defect lines, we study boundary renormalisation group flows. We find that when there exists a flow between maximally symmetric boundary conditions "a" and "b" then there also exists a boundary flow between "c x a" and "c x b" where "x" denotes the fusion product. We also discuss applications of this simple observation.
We consider defect operators in scalar field theories in dimensions $d=4-ε$ and $d=6-ε$ with self-interactions given by a general marginal potential. In a double scaling limit, where the bulk couplings go to zero and the defect couplings go to infinity, the bulk theory becomes classical and the quantum defect theory can be solved order by order in perturbation theory. We compute the defect $β$ functions to two loops and study the Renormalization Group flows. The defect fixed points can move and merge, leading to fixed point annihilation; and they exhibit a remarkable factorization property whe…
Recently Gaiotto [1] considered conformal defects which produce an expansion of infrared local fields in terms of the ultraviolet ones for a given renormalization group flow. In this paper we propose that for a boundary RG flow in two dimensions there exist boundary condition changing fields (RG defect fields) linking the UV and the IR conformal boundary conditions which carry similar information on the expansion of boundary fields at the fixed points. We propose an expression for a pairing between IR and UV operators in terms of a four-point function with two insertions of the RG defect field…
Kinematic space can be used as an intermediate step in the AdS/CFT dictionary and lends itself naturally to the description of diffeomorphism invariant quantities. From the bulk it has been defined as the space of boundary anchored geodesics, and from the boundary as the space of pairs of CFT points. When the bulk is not globally AdS$_3$ the appearance of non-minimal geodesics leads to ambiguities in these definitions. In this work conical defect spacetimes are considered as an example where non-minimal geodesics are common. From the bulk it is found that the conical defect kinematic space can…
Unlike conformal boundary conditions, conformal defects of Virasoro minimal models lack classification. Alternatively to the defect perturbation theory and the truncated conformal space approach, we employ open string field theory (OSFT) techniques to explore the space of conformal defects. We illustrate the method by an analysis of OSFT around the background associated to the $(1,2)$ topological defect in diagonal unitary minimal models. Numerical analysis of OSFT equations of motion leads to an identification of a nice family of solutions, recovering the picture of infrared fixed points due …
We study the defect groups of $D_p^b(G)$ theories using geometric engineering and BPS quivers. In the simple case when $b=h^\vee (G)$, we use the BPS quivers of the theory to see that the defect group is compatible with a known Maruyoshi-Song flow. To extend to the case where $b\neq h^\vee (G)$, we use a similar Maruyoshi-Song flow to conjecture that the defect groups of $D_p^b(G)$ theories are given by those of $G^{(b)}[k]$ theories. In the cases of $G=A_n, \;E_6, \;E_8$ we cross check our result by calculating the BPS quivers of the $G^{(b)}[k]$ theories and looking at the cokernel of their …
We consider two different conformal field theories with central charge c=7/10. One is the diagonal invariant minimal model in which all fields have integer spins; the other is the local fermionic theory with superconformal symmetry in which fields can have half-integer spin. We construct new conformal (but not topological or factorised) defects in the minimal model. We do this by first constructing defects in the fermionic model as boundary conditions in a fermionic theory of central charge c=7/5, using the folding trick as first proposed by Gang and Yamaguchi. We then acting on these with int…
In the context of two-dimensional rational conformal field theories we consider topological junctions of topological defect lines with boundary conditions. We refer to such junctions as open topological defects. For a relevant boundary operator on a conformal boundary condition we consider a commutation relation with an open defect obtained by passing the junction point through the boundary operator. We show that when there is an open defect that commutes or anti-commutes with the boundary operator there are interesting implications for the boundary RG flows triggered by this operator. The end…
We consider perturbation defects obtained by perturbing a 2D conformal field theory (CFT) by a relevant operator on a half-plane. If the perturbed bulk theory flows to an infrared fixed point described by another CFT, the defect flows to a conformal defect between the ultraviolet and infrared fixed point CFTs. For short bulk renormalization group flows connecting two fixed points which are close in theory space we find a universal perturbative formula for the boundary entropy of the corresponding conformal perturbation defect. We compare the value of the boundary entropy that our formula gives…
We investigate relevant deformation and the renormalization group flow in a defect conformal field theory from the point of view of the holography. We propose a candidate of g-function in the context of the holography, and prove the g-theorem: the g-function is monotonically non-increasing along the RG flow. We apply this g-theorem to the D5-brane solution which is an asymptotically AdS_4 x S^2 brane in AdS_5 x S^5. This solution corresponds to the mass deformation of the defect CFT. We checked that the g-function is monotonically non-increasing in this solution.
We consider the correlator of two concentric circular Wilson loops with equal radii for arbitrary spatial and internal separation at strong coupling within a defect version of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. Compared to the standard Gross-Ooguri phase transition between connected and disconnected minimal surfaces, a more complicated pattern of saddle-points contributes to the two-circles correlator due to the defect's presence. We analyze the transitions between different kinds of minimal surfaces and their dependence on the setting's numerous parameters.
Quantum field theories (QFT) in the presence of defects exhibit new types of anomalies which play an important role in constraining the defect dynamics and defect renormalization group (RG) flows. Here we study surface defects and their anomalies in conformal field theories (CFT) of general spacetime dimensions. When the defect is conformal, it is characterized by a conformal $b$-anomaly analogous to the $c$-anomaly of 2d CFTs. The $b$-theorem states that $b$ must monotonically decrease under defect RG flows and was proven by coupling to a spurious defect dilaton. We revisit the proof by deriv…
We describe a general way of constructing integrable defect theories as perturbations of conformal field theory by local defect operators. The method relies on folding the system onto a boundary field theory of twice the central charge. The classification of integrable defect theories obtained in this way parallels that of integrable bulk theories which are a perturbation of the tensor product of two conformal field theories. These include local defect perturbations of all $c<1$ minimal models, as well as of the coset theories based on SO(2n), obtained in this way. We discuss in detail the for…
We investigate perturbatively tractable deformations of topological defects in two-dimensional conformal field theories. We perturbatively compute the change in the $g$-factor, the reflectivity, and the entanglement entropy of the conformal defect at the end of these short RG flows. We also give instances of such flows in the diagonal Virasoro and Super-Virasoro Minimal Models.
The generalized Wilson loop operator interpolating between the supersymmetric and the ordinary Wilson loop in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theory provides an interesting example of renormalization group flow on a line defect: the scalar coupling parameter $ζ$ has a non-trivial beta function and may be viewed as a running coupling constant in a 1d defect QFT. In this paper we continue the study of this operator, generalizing previous results for the beta function and Wilson loop expectation value to the case of an arbitrary representation of the gauge group and beyond the planar limit. Focusing on the scal…
We propose defect lines as a useful tool to study bulk perturbations of conformal field theories, in particular to analyse the induced renormalisation group flows of boundary conditions. As a concrete example we investigate bulk perturbations of N=2 supersymmetric minimal models. To these perturbations we associate a special class of defects between the respective UV and IR theories, whose fusion with boundary conditions indeed reproduces the behaviour of the latter under the corresponding RG flows. v2: Some explanations added in section 4, minor changes.
We consider line defects in d-dimensional Conformal Field Theories (CFTs). The ambient CFT places nontrivial constraints on Renormalization Group (RG) flows on such line defects. We show that the flow on line defects is consequently irreversible and furthermore a canonical decreasing entropy function exists. This construction generalizes the g theorem to line defects in arbitrary dimensions. We demonstrate our results in a flow between Wilson loops in 4 dimensions.
A large class of two-dimensional dilaton-gravity theories in asymptotically AdS$_2$ spacetimes are holographically dual to a matrix integral, interpreted as an ensemble average over Hamiltonians. Viewing these theories as Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with a gas of defects, we extend this duality to a broader class of dilaton potentials compared to previous work by including conical defects with small deficit angles. In order to do this we show that these theories are equal to the large $p$ limit of a natural deformation of the $(2,p)$ minimal string theory.
Defect lines in conformal field theory can be perturbed by chiral defect fields. If the unperturbed defects satisfy su(2)-type fusion rules, the operators associated to the perturbed defects are shown to obey functional relations known from the study of integrable models as T-systems. The procedure is illustrated for Virasoro minimal models and for Liouville theory.
We consider conformal defect solutions in four dimensional $N=2$ gauged supergravity. These solutions are constructed as a warped product of $AdS_2\times S^1$ over an interval with non-trivial electric and magnetic fields. We show for minimal gauged supergravity and for gauged supergravity with vector multiplets and abelian gauging that supersymmetric defect solutions are only possible when the geometry has a conical defect in either the bulk or the boundary metric.
We study conformal defects in two important examples of string theory orbifolds. First, we show that topological defects in the language of Landau-Ginzburg models carry information about the RG flow between the non-compact orbifolds $\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{Z}_d$. Such defects are shown to correctly implement the bulk-induced RG flow on the boundary. Secondly, we study what the possible conformal defects are between the $c=1$ bosonic 2D conformal field theories with target space $S^1/\mathbb{Z}_2$. The defects cataloged here are obtained from boundary states corresponding to D-branes in the $c=2$ f…
We consider topological defect lines (TDLs) in two-dimensional conformal field theories. Generalizing and encompassing both global symmetries and Verlinde lines, TDLs together with their attached defect operators provide models of fusion categories without braiding. We study the crossing relations of TDLs, discuss their relation to the 't Hooft anomaly, and use them to constrain renormalization group flows to either conformal critical points or topological quantum field theories (TQFTs). We show that if certain non-invertible TDLs are preserved along a RG flow, then the vacuum cannot be a non-…
We initiate the study of how tensor networks reproduce properties of static holographic space-times, which are not locally pure anti-de Sitter. We consider geometries that are holographically dual to ground states of defect, interface and boundary CFTs and compare them to the structure of the requisite MERA networks predicted by the theory of minimal updates. When the CFT is deformed, certain tensors require updating. On the other hand, even identical tensors can contribute differently to estimates of entanglement entropies. We interpret these facts holographically by associating tensor update…

A conformal field theory (CFT) in dimension $d\geq 3$ coupled to a planar, two-dimensional, conformal defect is characterized in part by a "central charge" $b$ that multiplies the Euler density in the defect's Weyl anomaly. For defect renormalization group flows, under which the bulk remains critical, we use reflection positivity to show that $b$ must decrease or remain constant from ultraviolet to infrared. Our result applies also to a CFT in $d=3$ flat space with a planar boundary.

We explore a $C$-theorem in defect conformal field theories (DCFTs) that unify all the known conjectures and theorems until now. We examine as a candidate $C$-function the additional contributions from conformal defects to the sphere free energy and the entanglement entropy across a sphere in a number of examples including holographic models. We find the two quantities are equivalent, when suitably regularized, for codimension-one defects (or boundaries), but differ by a universal constant term otherwise. Moreover, we find in a few field theoretic examples that the sphere free energy decreases…
We consider loop observables in gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten models, and study the action of renormalization group flows on them. In the WZW model based on a compact Lie group G, we analyze at the classical level how the space of renormalizable defects is reduced upon the imposition of global and affine symmetries. We identify families of loop observables which are invariant with respect to an affine symmetry corresponding to a subgroup H of G, and show that they descend to gauge-invariant defects in the gauged model based on G/H. We study the flows acting on these families perturbatively, and qu…
In this work, as an attempt in understanding the interplay between deformations of the external and internal spaces associated with the probe-brane embedding submanifold, we construct the zero-temperature phase diagram for the coupled phase between two two-dimensional defects stacked parallel in a four-dimensional ambient spacetime. Different UV parameters are turned on for different defects. We study the system in the quenched strong coupling limit, using holography with probe brane approximation, realized explicitly through the D3/D5 system. This coupled phase is holographic dual to the pres…

Moving from Beisert-Staudacher equations, the complete set of Asymptotic Bethe Ansatz equations and $S$-matrix for the excitations over the GKP vacuum is found. The resulting model on this new vacuum is an integrable spin chain of length $R=2\ln s$ ($s=$ spin) with particle rapidities as inhomogeneities, two (purely transmitting) defects and $SU(4)$ (residual R-)symmetry. The non-trivial dynamics of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM appears in elaborated dressing factors of the 2D two-particle scattering factors, all depending on the 'fundamental' one between two scalar excitations. From scattering factors we …
The integrability of the ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric modified Korteweg de-Vries (smKdV) hierarchy in the presence of defects is investigated through the construction of its super Bäcklund transformation. The construction of such transformation is performed by using essentially two methods: the Bäcklund-defect matrix approach and the superfield approach. Firstly, we employ the defect matrix associated to the hierarchy which turns out to be the same for the supersymmetric sinh-Gordon (sshG) model. The method is general for all flows and as an example we derive explicitly the Bäcklund equations i…
We study bulk RG flows in the context of TQFTs and show how IR theories can be entirely represented within the respective UV theories by means of codimension-one projection defects. What is more, RG flows of the bulk theory can be described in terms of RG flows of the codimension-one identity defect in the fixed UV bulk theory. We illustrate this in the example of RG flows between Landau-Ginzburg orbifold models, for which the respective defects can be described in terms of matrix factorizations.
We model the back-reaction of a static observer in four-dimensional de Sitter spacetime by means of a singular $\mathbb Z_q$ quotient. The set of fixed points of the $\mathbb Z_q$ action consists of a pair of codimension two minimal surfaces given by 2-spheres in the Euclidean geometry. The introduction of an orbifold parameter $q>1$ permits the construction of an effective action for the bulk gravity theory with support on each of these minimal surfaces. The effective action corresponds to that of Liouville field theory on a 2-sphere with a finite vacuum expectation value of the Liouville fie…
