A new exactly solvable one-dimensional spin-3/2 Heisenberg model with SO(5)-invariance is proposed. The eigenvalues and Bethe ansatz equations of the model are obtained by using the nested algebraic Bethe ansatz approach. Several exotic elementary excitations in the antiferromagnetic region such as neutral spinon with zero spin, heavy spinon with spin-3/2 and dressed spinon with spin-1/2 are found.
In this work, we analyze the nonsymmorphic symmetry group structures for a variety of generalized Kitaev spin chains and ladders with bond alternations, including Kitaev-Gamma chain, Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma chain, beyond nearest neighbor interactions, and two-leg spin ladders. The symmetry analysis is applied to determine the symmetry breaking patterns of several magnetically ordered phases in the bond-alternating Kitaev-Gamma spin chains, as well as the dimerization order parameters for spontaneous dimerizations. Our work is useful in understanding the magnetic phases in related models and ma…
We construct a new spin-1 model on a chain. Its ground state is determined exactly which is three-fold degenerate by breaking translational invariance. Thus we have trimerization. Excited states cannot be obtained exactly, but we determine a few low-lying ones by using trial states, among them solitons.
It has been shown recently that inhomogenous spin chains can exhibit exotic phenomena such as the breaking of the area law of the entanglement entropy. An example is given by the rainbow model where the exchange coupling constants decrease from the center of the chain. Here we show that by folding the chain around its center, the long-range entanglement becomes short-range which can lead to topological phases protected by symmetries (SPT). The phases are trivial for bond-centered foldings, and non trivial for site-centered ones. In the latter case, the folded spin 1/2 chain with $U(1)$ symmetr…
We present exact models for an antiferromagnetic S=1 spin chain describing trimerization as well as for an antiferromagnetic S=3/2 spin chain describing tetramerization. These models can be seen as generalizations of the Majumdar-Ghosh model. For both models, we provide a local Hamiltonian and its exact three- or four-fold degenerate ground state wavefunctions, respectively. We numerically confirm the validity of both models using exact diagonalization and discuss the low lying excitations.
The antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain is expected to have an extended symmetry, [SU(2)xSU(2)]/Z 2 , in the infrared limit, whose physical interpretation is that the spin and dimer order parameters form the components of a common 4-dimensional vector. Here we numerically in- vestigate this emergent symmetry using quantum Monte Carlo simulations of a modified Heisenberg chain (the J-Q model) in which the logarithmic scaling corrections of the conventional Heisenberg chain can be avoided. We show how the two- and three-point spin and dimer correlation func- tions approach their forms constrained…
We calculate the exact Green function of a special model of N coupled Luttinger chains with arbitrary interchain hopping t_{perp}. The model is exactly solvable via bosonization if the interchain interaction does not fall off in the direction perpendicular to the chains. For any finite N we find Luttinger liquid behavior and explicitly calculate the anomalous dimension gamma^(N). However, the Luttinger liquid state does not preclude coherent interchain hopping. We also show that gamma^(N) -> 0 for N -> infinity, so that in the limit of infinitely many chains we obtain a Fermi liquid.
Exact ground states of interacting electrons on the diamond Hubbard chain in a magnetic field are constructed which exhibit a wide range of properties such as flat-band ferromagnetism and correlation induced metallic, half-metallic or insulating behavior. The properties of these ground states can be tuned by changing the magnetic flux, local potentials, or electron density.
The exact amplitude for the asymptotic correlation function in the S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain is determined: <S^a_0 S^b_r> goes to (-1)^r delta^{ab}(ln r)^{1/2}/[(2 pi)^{3/2}r]. The behaviour of the correlation functions for small xxz anisotropy and the form of finite-size corrections to the correlation function are also analysed.
The ground states and finite-temperature properties of mixed diamond chains with spins 1 and 1/2 are investigated in the limit of strong easy-axis anisotropy on the spin-1 sites. Magnetization curves, entropy, specific heat and magnetic susceptibility are exactly calculated using the method of Čanovà et al. [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 18 4967 (2006)].
We study an exactly solvable one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ model which can support weak zero modes in its ground state manifold. The spin chain has staggered XXZ-type and ZZ-type spin interaction on neighboring bonds and is thus dubbed the (XXZ,Z) chain. The model is equivalent to an interacting fermionic chain by Jordan-Wigner transformation. We study the phase diagram of the system and work out the conditions and properties of its weak zero modes. In the fermion chain representation, these weak zero modes are given by even-order polynomials of Majorana fermion operators and are thus bos…
We show that generic SU(2)-invariant random spin-1 chains have phases with an emergent SU(3) symmetry. We map out the full zero-temperature phase diagram and identify two different phases: (i) a conventional random singlet phase (RSP) of strongly bound spin pairs (SU(3) "mesons") and (ii) an unconventional RSP of bound SU(3) "baryons", which are formed, in the great majority, by spin trios located at random positions. The emergent SU(3) symmetry dictates that susceptibilities and correlation functions of both dipolar and quadrupolar spin operators have the same asymptotic behavior.
The ground state of the $S=1$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain belongs to the Haldane phase -- a well known example of symmetry-protected topological phase. A staggered field applied to the $S=1$ antiferromagnetic chain breaks all the symmetries that protect the Haldane phase as a topological phase, reducing it to a trivial phase. That is, the Haldane phase is then connected adiabatically to an antiferromagnetic product state. Nevertheless, as long as the symmetry under site-centered inversion combined with a spin rotation is preserved, the phase is still distinct from another trivial phase.…
We study different phases of the one-dimensional bond-alternating spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model by using the symmetry fractionalization mechanism. We employ the infinite matrix-product state representation of the ground state (through the infinite-size density matrix renormalization group algorithm) to obtain inequivalent projective representations of the (unbroken) symmetry groups of the model, which are used to identify the different phases. We find that the model exhibits trivial as well as symmetry-protected topological phases. The symmetry-protected topological phases are Haldane phases on …
We study different quantum phases in integer spin systems with on-site D2h=D2xZ2 and translation symmetry. We find four distinct non-trivial phases in S=1 spin chains despite they all have the same symmetry. All the four phases have gapped bulk excitations, doubly-degenerate end states and the doubly-degenerate entanglement spectrum. These non-trivial phases are examples of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases introduced by Gu and Wen. One of the SPT phase correspond to the Haldane phase and the other three are new. These four SPT phases can be distinguished experimentally by their diff…
Kitaev chain model with nearest neighbor interaction U is solved exactly at the symmetry point $Δ=t$ and chemical potential $μ=0$ in open boundary condition. By applying two Jordan-Wigner transformations and a spin-rotation, such a symmetric interacting model is mapped to a non-interacting fermion model, which can be diagonalized exactly. The solutions include topologically non-trivial phase at $|U|<t$ and topologically trivial phase at $|U|>t$. The two phases are related by dualities. Quantum phase transitions in the model are studied with the help of the exact solution.
In a recent experiment on CoNb_2O_6, Coldea et al. [Science 327, 177 (2010)] found for the first time experimental evidence of the exceptional Lie algebra E_8. The emergence of this symmetry was theoretically predicted long ago for the transverse quantum Ising chain in the presence of a weak longitudinal field. We consider an accurate microscopic model of CoNb_2O_6 incorporating additional couplings and calculate numerically the dynamical structure function using a recently developed matrix-product-state method. The excitation spectra show bound states characteristic of the weakly broken E_8 s…
We show that numerical quasi-one-dimensional renormalization group allows accurate study of weakly coupled chains with modest computational effort. We perform a systematic comparison with exact diagonalization results in two and three-leg spin ladders with a transverse Hamiltonian that can involve frustration. Due to the variational nature of the algorithm, the accuracy can be arbitrarily improved enlarging the basis of eigenstates of the density matrix defined in the transverse direction. We observe that the precision of the algorithm is directly correlated to the binding of the chains. We al…
We introduce several exact models for SU(3) spin chains: (1) a translationally invariant parent Hamiltonian involving four-site interactions for the trimer chain, with a three-fold degenerate ground state. We provide numerical evidence that the elementary excitations of this model transform under representation 3bar of SU(3) if the original spins of the model transform under rep. 3. (2) a family of parent Hamiltonians for valence bond solids of SU(3) chains with spin reps. 6, 10, and 8 on each lattice site. We argue that of these three models, only the latter two exhibit spinon confinement and…
We use the matrix product approach to construct all optimum ground states of general anisotropic spin-2 chains with nearest neighbour interactions and common symmetries. These states are exact ground states of the model and their properties depend on up to three parameters. We find three different antiferromagnetic Haldane phases, one weak antiferromagnetic and one weak ferromagnetic phase. The antiferromagnetic phases can be described as spin liquids with exponentially decaying correlation functions. The variety of phases found with the matrix product ansatz also gives insight into the behavi…
The spin-1/2 Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain is considered within the perturbative strong-coupling approach, which is developed from the exactly solved spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain with the Heisenberg intradimer and the Ising interdimer couplings. Although the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain exhibits just intermediate plateaux at zero, one-quarter and one-half of the saturation magnetization, the perturbative treatment up to second order stemming from this exactly solvable model additionally corroborates the fractional one-third plateau as well as the gap…
Spin-orbital entanglement in quantum spin-orbital systems is quantified by a reduced von Neumann entropy, and is calculated for the ground state of a coupled spin-orbital chain with $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ symmetry. By analyzing the discontinuity and local extreme of the reduced entropy as functions of the model parameters, we deduce a rich phase diagram to describe the quantum phase transitions in the model. Our approach provides an efficient and powerful method to identify phase boundaries in a system with complex correlation between multiply degrees of freedom.
We study the one- and two-holon excitations of the SU(3) Kuramoto-Yokoyama model on the level of explicit wave functions, and generalize the calculations to the case of SU(n). We obtain the exact energies and the single holon momenta, which we find fractionally spaced according to fractional statistics with statistical parameter g=1/n.
In this paper, we investigate how much of the numerical artefacts introduced by finite system size and choice of boundary conditions can be removed by finite size scaling, for strongly-correlated systems with quasi-long-range order. Starting from the exact ground-state wave functions of hardcore bosons and spinless fermions with infinite nearest-neighbor repulsion on finite periodic chains and finite open chains, we compute the two-point, density-density, and pair-pair correlation functions, and fit these to various asymptotic power laws. Comparing the finite-periodic-chain and finite-openchai…
A generalization of the Mattis-Nam model (J.Math.Phys., 13 (1972), 1185), which takes into account a correlated hopping and pairing of electrons, is proposed, its exact solution is obtained. In the framework of the model the stability of the zero energy Majorana fermions localized at the boundaries is studied in the chain in which electrons interact through both the on-site Hubbard interaction and the correlated hopping and pairing. The ground-state phase diagram of the model is calculated, the region of existence of topological states is determined. It is shown that low-energy excitations des…
We evaluate numerically certain multiple integrals representing nearest and next-nearest neighbor correlation functions of the spin-1/2 $XXZ$ Heisenberg infinite chain at finite temperatures.
We introduce a real-space exact renormalization group method to find exactly solvable quantum spin chains and their ground states. This method allows us to provide a complete list for exact solutions within SU(2) symmetric quantum spin chains with $S\leq 4$ and nearest-neighbor interactions, as well as examples with S=5. We obtain two classes of solutions: One of them converges to the fixed points of renormalization group and the ground states are matrix product states. Another one does not have renormalization fixed points and the ground states are partially ferromagnetic states.
It is shown that a generalization of Bethe Ansatz based on an utilization of {\it degenerative discrete-diffractive} wave functions solves the three-magnon problem for the $S=1$ isotropic ferromagnetic infinite chain. The four-magnon problem is briefly discussed.
We investigate the $J_1$-$J_2$ spin chain consisting of spins with magnitude $\frac12$. The nearest-neighbor and the next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions are ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, respectively, and induce strong frustration. Both these interactions involve the bond alternation. We find exact solutions for all the degenerate ground states on the phase boundary of the ferromagnetic phase. The degeneracy remains irrespective of two parameters representing the bond alternation. The exact solutions are of closed forms for no bond alternation and of recursion formulae in genera…
A mixed Ising-Heisenberg spin system consisting of triangular XXZ-Heisenberg spin clusters assembled into a chain by alternating with Ising spins interacting to all three spins in the triangle is considered. The exact solution of the model is given in terms of the generalized decoration--iteration map and within the transfer-matrix technique. Exact expressions for thermodynamic functions are derived. Ground state phase diagrams, thermodynamic and magnetic properties of the system are examined.
We consider the classification problem of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases on quantum spin systems. SPT phases are gapped short-range-entangled quantum phases with a symmetry $G$. We explain that in one and two-dimensional quantum spin systems, there are $H^{2}(G, U(1))$/ $H^{3}(G, U(1))$-valued invariant, confirming a physicists conjecture.
We construct a hierarchy of exactly solvable spin-1/2 chains with so(N)_1 critical points. Our construction is based on the framework of condensate-induced transitions between topological phases. We employ this framework to construct a Hamiltonian term that couples N transverse field Ising chains such that the resulting theory is critical and described by the so(N)_1 conformal field theory. By employing spin duality transformations, we then cast these spin chains for arbitrary N into translationally invariant forms that all allow exact solution by the means of a Jordan-Wigner transformation. F…
The mixed diamond chain is a frustrated Heisenberg chain composed of successive diamond-shaped units with two kinds of spins of magnitudes S and S/2 (S: integer). Ratio $lambda$ of two exchange parameters controls the strength of frustration. With varying $lambda$, the Haldane state and several spin cluster states appear as the ground state. A spin cluster state is a tensor product of exact local eigenstates of cluster spins. We prove that a spin cluster state is the ground state in a finite interval of $lambda$. For S=1, we numerically determine the total phase diagram consisting of five phas…
A systematic perturbation theory is developed for the ESR shift and is applied to the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. Using the Bethe ansatz technique, we exactly analyze the resonance shift in the first order of perturbative expansion with respect to an anisotropic exchange interaction. Exact result for the whole range of temperature and magnetic field, as well as asymptotic behavior in the low-temperature limit are presented. The obtained g-shift strongly depends on magnetic fields at low temperature, showing a significant deviation from the previous classical result.
A simple Mathematica code based on the differential realization of hard-core boson operators for finding exact solutions of the periodic-N spin-1/2 systems with or beyond nearest neighbor interactions is proposed, which can easily be used to study general spin-1/2 interaction systems. As an example, The code is applied to study XXX spin-1/2 chain with nearest neighbor interaction in a uniform transverse field. It shows that there are [N/2] level-crossing points in the ground state, where N is the periodic number of the system and [x] stands for the integer part of x, when the interaction stren…
Most of the exact solutions of quantum one-dimensional Hamiltonians are obtained thanks to the success of the Bethe ansatz on its several formulations. According to this ansatz the amplitudes of the eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian are given by a sum of permutations of appropriate plane waves. In this paper, alternatively, we present a matrix product ansatz that asserts that those amplitudes are given in terms of a matrix product. The eigenvalue equation for the Hamiltonian define the algebraic properties of the matrices defining the amplitudes. The existence of a consistent algebra imply the…
Boundary driven quantum master equation for a general inhomogeneous (non-integrable) anisotropic Heisenberg spin $1/2$ chain, or an equivalent nearest neighbor interacting spinless fermion chain, is considered in the presence of a strong external field $f$. We present an exact closed form expression for large $f$ asymptotics of the current in the presence of pure incoherent source and sink dissipation at the boundaries. In application we demonstrate arbitrary large current rectification in the presence of interaction.
We introduce a family of spin-1/2 quantum chains, and show that their exact ground states break the rotational and translational symmetries of the original Hamiltonian. We also show how one can use projection to construct a spin-3/2 quantum chain with nearest neighbor interaction, whose exact ground states break the rotational symmetry of the Hamiltonian. Correlation functions of both models are determined in closed form. Although we confine ourselves to examples, the method can easily be adapted to encompass more general models.
We conjecture exact and simple formulas for physical quantities in two quantum chains. A classic result of this type is Onsager, Kaufman and Yang's formula for the spontaneous magnetization in the Ising model, subsequently generalized to the chiral Potts models. We conjecture that analogous results occur in the XYZ chain when the couplings obey J_xJ_y + J_yJ_z + J_x J_z=0, and in a related fermion chain with strong interactions and supersymmetry. We find exact formulas for the magnetization and gap in the former, and the staggered density in the latter, by exploiting the fact that certain quan…
We calculate a nonequilibrium steady state of a quantum XX chain in the presence of dephasing and driving due to baths at chain ends. The obtained state is exact in the limit of weak driving while the expressions for one- and two-point correlations are exact for an arbitrary driving strength. In the steady state the magnetization profile and the spin current display diffusive behavior. Spin-spin correlation function on the other hand has long-range correlations which though decay to zero in either the thermodynamical limit or for equilibrium driving. At zero dephasing a nonequilibrium phase tr…
Some quantum critical states cannot be smoothly deformed into each other without either crossing some multicritical points or explicitly breaking certain symmetries even if they belong to the same universality class. This brings up the notion of ``symmetry-enriched'' quantum criticality. While recent works in the literature focused on critical states with robust degenerate edge modes, we propose that the conformal boundary condition (b.c.) is a more generic characteristic of such quantum critical states. We show that in two families of quantum spin chains, which generalize the Ising and the th…
Given a critical quantum spin chain with a microscopic Lie-group symmetry, corresponding e.g. to $U(1)$ or $SU(2)$ spin isotropy, we numerically investigate the emergence of Kac-Moody symmetry at low energies and long distances. In that regime, one such critical quantum spin chain is described by a conformal field theory where the usual Virasoro algebra associated to conformal invariance is augmented with a Kac-Moody algebra associated to conserved currents. Specifically, we first propose a method to construct lattice operators corresponding to the Kac-Moody generators. We then numerically sho…
We investigate the superconducting phase diagram and boundary modes for a quasi-1D system formed by three Fe-Chains on an s-wave superconductor, motivated by the recent Princeton experiment. The $\vec l\cdot\vec s$ onsite spin-orbit term, inter-chain diagonal hopping couplings, and magnetic disorders in the Fe-chains are shown to be crucial for the superconducting phases, which can be topologically trivial or nontrivial in different parameter regimes. For the topological regime a single Majorana and multiple Andreew bound modes are obtained in the ends of the chain, while for the trivial phase…
We discuss current carrying non-equilibrium steady state of an open fermionic Hubbard chain that is strongly driven by markovian incoherent processes localized at the chain ends. An explicit form of exact many-body density operator for any value of the coupling parameter is presented. The structure of a matrix product form of the solution is encoded in terms of a novel diagrammatic technique which should allow for generalization to other integrable non-equillibrium models.
We extend T. Prosen's construction of quasilocal conserved quantities for the XXZ model [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 217206 (2011)] to the case of periodic boundary conditions. These quasilocal operators stem from a two-parameter transfer matrix which employs a highest-weight representation of the quantum group algebra inherent in the Yang-Baxter algebra. In contrast with the open chain, where the conservation law is weakly violated by boundary terms, the quasilocal operators in the periodic chain exactly commute with the Hamiltonian and other local conserved quantities.
We study the Kitaev chain under generalized twisted boundary conditions, for which both the amplitudes and the phases of the boundary couplings can be tuned at will. We explicitly show the presence of exact zero modes for large chains belonging to the topological phase in the most general case, in spite of the absence of "edges" in the system. For specific values of the phase parameters, we rigorously obtain the condition for the presence of the exact zero modes in finite chains, and show that the zero modes obtained are indeed localized. The full spectrum of the twisted chains with zero chemi…
The local Z_N quantized Berry phase for the SU(N) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin model is formulated. This quantity, which is a generalization of the local Z_2 Berry phase for SU(2) symmetry, has a direct correspondence to the number of singlet pairs spanning on a particular bond, and is effective as a tool to characterize and classify the various symmetry protected topological phases of one-dimensional SU(N) spin systems. We extend the path-integral quantum Monte Carlo method for the Z_2 Berry phase in order to calculate the ZN Berry phase numerically. We demonstrate our method by calculat…
The symmetry of the generalized Polychronakos-Frahm chain is obtained from the Dunkl-operator deformation of the unitary algebra, which describes the symmetry of the generalized Calogero model.
We construct a new exactly solvable supersymmetric spin chain related to the BC_N extended root system, which includes as a particular case the BC_N version of the Polychronakos-Frahm spin chain. We also introduce a supersymmetric spin dynamical model of Calogero type which yields the new chain in the large coupling limit. This connection is exploited to derive two different closed-form expressions for the chain's partition function by means of Polychronakos's freezing trick. We establish a boson-fermion duality relation for the new chain's spectrum, which is in fact valid for a large class of…
We solve in closed form the simplest (su(1|1)) supersymmetric version of Inozemtsev's elliptic spin chain, as well as its infinite (hyperbolic) counterpart. The solution relies on the equivalence of these models to a system of free spinless fermions, and on the exact computation of the Fourier transform of the resulting elliptic hopping amplitude. We also compute the thermodynamic functions of the finite (elliptic) chain and their low temperature limit, and show that the energy levels become normally distributed in the thermodynamic limit. Our results indicate that at low temperatures the su(1…
We introduce a frustration-free, one-dimensional model of spinless fermions with hopping, p-wave superconducting pairing and alternating chemical potentials. The model possesses two exactly degenerate ground states even for finite system sizes. We present analytical results for the strong Majorana zero modes, the phase diagram and the topological order. Furthermore, we generalise our results to include interactions.
