The discovery of the radiation properties of black holes prompted the search for a natural candidate quantum ground state for a massless scalar field theory on Schwarzschild spacetime, here considered in the Eddington-Finkelstein representation. Among the several available proposals in the literature, an important physical role is played by the so-called Unruh state which is supposed to be appropriate to capture the physics of a black hole formed by spherically symmetric collapsing matter. Within this respect, we shall consider a massless Klein-Gordon field and we shall rigorously and globally construct such state, that is on the algebra of Weyl observables localised in the union of the static external region, the future event horizon and the non-static black hole region. Eventually, out of a careful use of microlocal techniques, we prove that the built state fulfils, where defined, the so-called Hadamard condition; hence, it is perturbatively stable, in other words realizing the natural candidate with which one could study purely quantum phenomena such as the role of the back reaction of Hawking's radiation. From a geometrical point of view, we shall make a profitable use of a bulk-to-boundary reconstruction technique which carefully exploits the Killing horizon structure as well as the conformal asymptotic behaviour of the underlying background. From an analytical point of view, our tools will range from Hormander's theorem on propagation of singularities, results on the role of passive states, and a detailed use of the recently discovered peeling behaviour of the solutions of the wave equation in Schwarzschild spacetime.
We give a rigorous definition of the Unruh state in the setting of massless Dirac fields on slowly rotating Kerr spacetimes. In the black hole exterior region, we show that it is asymptotically thermal at Hawking temperature on the past event horizon. Furthermore, we demonstrate that in the union of the exterior and interior regions, the Unruh state is pure and Hadamard. The main ingredients are the Häfner-Nicolas scattering theory, new microlocal estimates for characteristic Cauchy problems and criteria on the level of square-integrable solutions.
The study of physical effects of quatum fields in black hole spacetimes, which is related to questions such as the validity of the strong cosmic censorship conjecture, requires a Hadamard state describing the physical situation. Here, we consider the theory of a free scalar field on a Kerr-de Sitter spacetime, focussing on spacetimes with sufficiently small angular momentum of the black hole and sufficiently small cosmological constant. We demonstrate that an extension of the Unruh state, which describes the expected late-time behaviour in spherically symmetric gravitational collapse, can be r…
We consider Unruh effect as an origin for Schwarzschild black hole entropy thus implying unitarian evolution of gravity. We simulate the black hole by set of Unruh horizons and estimate total entropy of the system. Dependence on mass and spin of the emitted particles is taken into account. The obtained results may be easily extended to any other intrinsic degrees of freedom of the particles. Unruh effect contribution to Schwarzschild black hole entropy is presented in exact analytical form.
The renormalized expectation value of the stress energy tensor of the conformally invariant massless fields in the Unruh state in the Schwarzschild spacetime is constructed. It is achieved through solving the conservation equation in conformal space and utilizing the regularity conditions in the physical metric. The relations of obtained results to the existing approximations are analysed.
We construct a state in the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime which is invariant under the action of its group of symmetries. Our state is not defined in the whole Kruskal extension of this spacetime, but rather in a subset of the maximally extended conformal diagram. The construction is based on a careful use of the bulk-to-boundary technique. We will show that our state is Hadamard and that it is not a KMS state, differently from the case of states constructed in spacetimes containing only one event horizon.
By globally embedding curved spaces into higher dimensional flat ones, we show that Hawking thermal properties map into their Unruh equivalents: The relevant curved space detectors become Rindler ones, whose temperature and entropy reproduce the originals. Specific illustrations include Schwarzschild, Schwarzschild-(anti)deSitter, Reissner-Nordstrom and BTZ spaces.
We show that a particle detector can distinguish the $\mathbb{RP}^3$ geon from the Schwarzschild black hole, even though they differ only by a topological identification beyond the event horizon. This shows that the detector can read out information about the non-local structure even when separated from the non-locality by an event horizon. Our analysis of the dependence of the transition on the detector gap is novel, and in principle presents an interesting observational signal.
We present novel methods to numerically address the problem of characterizing the response of particle detectors in curved spacetimes. These methods allow for the integration of the Wightman function, at least in principle, in rather general backgrounds. In particular we will use this tool to further understand the nature of conformal massless scalar Hawking radiation from a Schwarzschild black hole in anti-de Sitter space. We do that by studying an Unruh-DeWitt detector at rest above the horizon and in circular geodesic orbit. The method allows us to see that the response rate shows peaks at …
It is well-known that the $(1+1)$ dimensional Schwarzschild and spatially flat FLRW spacetimes are conformally flat. This work examines entanglement harvesting from the conformal field vacuums in these spacetimes between two Unruh-DeWitt detectors, moving along outgoing null trajectories. In $(1+1)$ dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime, we considered the Boulware and Unruh vacuums for our investigations. In this analysis, one observes that while entanglement harvesting is possible in $(1+1)$ dimensional Schwarzschild and $(1+3)$ dimensional de Sitter spacetimes, it is not possible in the $(1+1)…
Using the Fermat's principle in curved space-time with stationary type metric, we have obtained the speed of light as a function of spatial coordinates and hence the corresponding refractive index. The whole region with space dependent gravity is divided into a number of overlapping transparent refracting media with varying refractive index. The refractive index is found to be increasing with the strength of gravitational field. Hence using the laws of refraction, we have explained the gravitational bending of light. Further using the conventional idea of total internal reflection of light whi…
We compare the response function of an Unruh-DeWitt detector for different space-times and different vacua and show that there is a {\it detailed} violation of the equivalence principle. In particular comparing the response of an accelerating detector to a detector at rest in a Schwarzschild space-time we find that both detectors register thermal radiation, but for a given, equivalent acceleration the fixed detector in the Schwarzschild space-time measures a higher temperature. This allows one to locally distinguish the two cases. As one approaches the horizon the two temperatures have the sam…
The elliptic Einstein-DeTurck equation may be used to numerically find Einstein metrics on Riemannian manifolds. Static Lorentzian Einstein metrics are considered by analytically continuing to Euclidean time. Ricci-DeTurck flow is a constructive algorithm to solve this equation, and is simple to implement when the solution is a stable fixed point, the only complication being that Ricci solitons may exist which are not Einstein. Here we extend previous work to consider the Einstein-DeTurck equation for Riemannian manifolds with boundaries, and those that continue to static Lorentzian spacetimes…
In the four-dimensional background of Schwarzschild black hole, we investigate the energy densities and fluxes in the freely falling frames for the Boulware, Unruh, and Israel-Hartle-Hawking states. In particular, we study their behaviors near the horizon and asymptotic spatial infinity by using the trace anomaly of a conformally invariant scalar field. In the Boulware state, both the energy density and flux are negative divergent when the observer is dropped at the horizon, and asymptotically vanish. In the Unruh state, the energy density is also negative divergent at the horizon while it is …
We study, by separately calculating the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction to the atomic energy level shift, the Lamb shift of a static two-level atom interacting with real massless scalar fields in the Boulware, Unruh and Hartle-Hawking vacuums outside a Schwarzschild black hole. We find that in the Boulware vacuum, the Lamb shift gets a correction arising as a result of the backscattering of vacuum field modes off the space-time curvature, which is reminiscent of the correction to the Lamb shift induced by the presence of cavities. However, when the Unruh and Hartle-…
We study the harvesting of correlations by two Unruh-DeWitt static detectors from the vacuum state of a massless scalar field in a background Vaidya spacetime consisting of a collapsing null shell that forms a Schwarzschild black hole (hereafter Vaidya spacetime for brevity), and we compare the results with those associated with the three preferred vacua (Boulware, Unruh, Hartle-Hawking-Israel vacua) of the eternal Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. To do this we make use of the explicit Wightman functions for a massless scalar field available in (1+1)-dimensional models of the collapsing spa…
The spontaneous excitation of a two-level atom held static outside a four dimensional Schwarzschild black hole and in interaction with a massless scalar field in the Boulware, Unruh and Hartle-Hawking vacuum is investigated and the contributions of the vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction to the rate of change of the mean atomic energy are calculated separately. We find that for the Boulware vacuum, the spontaneous excitation does not occur and the ground state atoms are stable, while the spontaneous emission rate for excited atoms in the Boulware vacuum, which is well-behaved at the eve…
We conjecture that (when the notion of Hadamard state is suitably adapted) there is no isometry-invariant Hadamard state for the massive or massless covariant Klein-Gordon equation defined on the region of the Kruskal spacetime to the left of a surface of constant Schwarzschild radius in the right Schwarzschild wedge when Dirichlet boundary conditions are put on that surface. We also prove that, with a suitable definition for 'boost-invariant Hadamard state' (which we call 'strongly boost-invariant globally-Hadamard') which takes into account both the existence of the timelike boundary and the…
The symmetric two-point function for a massless, minimally coupled scalar field in the Unruh state is examined for Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime in two dimensions. This function grows linearly in terms of a time coordinate that is well-defined on the future black hole and cosmological horizons, when the points are split in the space direction. This type of behavior also occurs in two dimensions for other static black hole spacetimes when the field is in the Unruh state, and at late times it occurs in spacetimes where a black hole forms from the collapse of a null shell. The generalization …
Building on a pair of earlier papers, I investigate the various point-wise and averaged energy conditions for the quantum stress-energy tensor corresponding to a conformally-coupled massless scalar field in the in the (1+1)-dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime. Because the stress-energy tensors are analytically known, I can get exact results for the Hartle--Hawking, Boulware, and Unruh vacua. This exactly solvable model serves as a useful sanity check on my (3+1)-dimensional investigations wherein I had to resort to a mixture of analytic approximations and numerical techniques. Key results in (…
We examine the response of an Unruh-DeWitt particle detector coupled to a massless scalar field on the (3+1)-dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime, in the Boulware, Hartle-Hawking and Unruh states, for static detectors and detectors on circular geodesics, by primarily numerical methods. For the static detector, the response in the Hartle-Hawking state exhibits the known thermality at the local Hawking temperature, and the response in the Unruh state is thermal at the local Hawking temperature in the limit of a large detector energy gap. For the circular-geodesic detector, we find evidence of the…
We study an Unruh-DeWitt particle detector that is coupled to the proper time derivative of a real scalar field in 1+1 spacetime dimensions. Working within first-order perturbation theory, we cast the transition probability into a regulator-free form, and we show that the transition rate remains well defined in the limit of sharp switching. The detector is insensitive to the infrared ambiguity when the field becomes massless, and we verify explicitly the regularity of the massless limit for a static detector in Minkowski half-space. We then consider a massless field for two scenarios of intere…
We examine an Unruh-DeWitt particle detector coupled to a scalar field in three-dimensional curved spacetime, within first-order perturbation theory. We first obtain a causal and manifestly regular expression for the instantaneous transition rate in an arbitrary Hadamard state. We then specialise to the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole and to a massless conformally coupled field in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum. A co-rotating detector responds thermally in the expected local Hawking temperature, while a freely-falling detector shows no evidence of thermality in regimes that we are able to pro…
We globally embed (3+1)-dimensional Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-AdS black holes in massive gravity into (5+2)-dimensional flat spacetimes. Making use of embedding coordinates, we directly obtain the generalized Hawking, Unruh and freely falling temperatures in a Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-AdS black hole due to massive graviton effects.
An analytic method is given for deriving the part of the retarded Green's function v(x,x') that contributes to the tail term in the radiation reaction force felt by a particle coupled to a massless minimally coupled scalar field. The method gives an expansion of v(x,x') for small separations of the points x, x' valid for an arbitrary static spherically symmetric spacetime. It is obtained by using a WKB approximation for the Euclidean Green's function for the massless minimally coupled scalar field and is equivalent to the DeWitt-Schwinger expansion for v(x,x'). The first few terms in this expa…
Numerical results for the semi-classical stress-energy tensor outside the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole obtained in the 1980's and 1990's are re- examined in order to better understand the origin of Hawking radiation and the implications for the black hole information paradox. Polynomial fits to the numerical results for the 4D transverse stress are obtained for conformally-coupled spin 0 and spin 1 fields in the Hartle-Hawking and Unruh states and. Analysis of the spin 0 Unruh state results clearly shows that the origin of the Hawking radiation is not pair creation or tunneling very c…
The characteristic features of $<T_{μν}>$ in the Boulware, Unruh and Hartle-Hawking states for a conformal massless scalar field propagating in the Schwarzschild space-time are obtained by means of effective actions deduced by the trace anomaly. The actions are made local by the introduction of auxiliary fields and boundary conditions are carefully imposed on them in order to select the different quantum states.
We examine the Hawking effect by studying the asymptotic entanglement of two mutually independent two-level atoms placed at a fixed radial distance outside a Schwarzschild black hole in the framework of open quantum systems. We treat the two-atom system as an open quantum system in a bath of fluctuating quantized massless scalar fields in vacuum and calculate the concurrence, a measurement of entanglement, of the equilibrium state of the system at large times, for the Unruh, Hartle-Hawking and Boulware vacua respectively. We find, for all three vacuum cases, that the atoms turn out to be entan…
We examine the Unruh-DeWitt particle detector coupled to a scalar field in an arbitrary Hadamard state in four-dimensional curved spacetime. Using smooth switching functions to turn on and off the interaction, we obtain a regulator-free integral formula for the total excitation probability, and we show that an instantaneous transition rate can be recovered in a suitable limit. Previous results in Minkowski space are recovered as a special case. As applications, we consider an inertial detector in the Rindler vacuum and a detector at rest in a static Newtonian gravitational field. Gravitational…
In the celebrated Unruh effect, we learn that a uniformly accelerating detector in a Minkowski vacuum spacetime registers a constant temperature. Building on prior work, we present a technique based on derivative couplings of the two-point Wightman function and the Hadamard renormalization procedure to define an instantaneous temperature for a massive scalar field, non-minimally coupled to gravity. We find the temperature contains local contributions from the acceleration of the detector, the curvature of spacetime, and the renormalized stress-energy tensor of the field. Our result, which can …
We show that the response rate of (i) a static source interacting with Hawking radiation of massless scalar field in Schwarzschild spacetime (with the Unruh vacuum) and that of (ii) a uniformly accelerated source with the same proper acceleration in Minkowski spacetime (with the Minkowski vacuum) are equal. We show that this equality will not hold if the Unruh vacuum is replaced by the Hartle-Hawking vacuum. It is verified that the source responds to the Hawking radiation near the horizon as if it were at rest in a thermal bath in Minkowski spacetime with the same temperature. It is also verif…
We calculate the quantum correlator in Schwarzschild black hole space-time. We perform the calculation for a scalar field in three different quantum states: Boulware, Unruh and Hartle-Hawking, and for points along a timelike circular geodesic. The results show that the correlator presents a global fourfold singularity structure, which is state-independent. Our results also show the different correlations in the three different quantum states arising in-between the singularities.
It is well known that observers will be accelerated when they approach the planets. Thus, discussing the properties of accelerating observers in the Schwarzschild space is of sense. For the sake of simplicity, we can construct these observers' world lines by comparing with the observers in the Hawking effect and Unruh effect, whose world lines are both hyperbolic curves in the appropriate coordinates. We do it after defining a certain special null hypersurface in the Kruskal coordinates. Our result shows that these accelerating observers defined in our paper can also detect the radiation with …
We examine an Unruh-DeWitt particle detector coupled to a scalar field in three-dimensional curved spacetime. We first obtain a regulator-free expression for the transition probability in an arbitrary Hadamard state, working within first-order perturbation theory and assuming smooth switching, and we show that both the transition probability and the instantaneous transition rate remain well defined in the sharp switching limit. We then analyse a detector coupled to a massless conformally coupled field in the Hartle-Hawking vacua on the Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole, under both transpar…
It was shown recently that in four dimensions scalar sources with fixed proper acceleration minimally coupled to a massless Klein-Gordon field lead to the same responses when they are (i) uniformly accelerated in Minkowski spacetime (in the inertial vacuum) and (ii) static in the Schwarzschild spacetime (in the Unruh vacuum). Here we show that this equivalence is broken if the spacetime dimension is more than four.
We report the existence of an Unruh like effect, for physical observers (cosmological and comoving observers) in the radiation dominated early universe, which is possible due to the discovery of a new vacuum state (referred here as the $T-$vacuum). Both the comoving and the cosmological observers, who are crucial in our understanding of cosmology, observe this $T-$vacuum as a particle excited state and are able to detect radiation due to particle creation. We draw a robust analogy with the Unruh effect, whereby -- (i) the physical observers here are closely analogous to the accelerated (Rindle…
We discuss for which smooth global embeddings of a metric into a Minkowskian spacetime the Hawking into Unruh mapping takes place. There is a series of examples of global embeddings into the Minkowskian spacetime (GEMS) with such mapping for physically interesting metrics. These examples use Fronsdal-type embeddings for which timelines are hyperbolas. In the present work we show that for some new embeddings (non Fronsdal-type) of the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom metrics there is no mapping. We give also the examples of hyperbolic and non hyperbolic type embeddings for the de Sitter met…
In a previous work an approximate static metric was found of a test black string that stretches from the boundary to the horizon of the planar Schwarzschild-AdS_5 geometry. This is the gravity dual of the Unruh state for \mathcal{N}=4, SU(N) super Yang-Mills theory on a 4-dimensional Schwarzschild background, at large N and large 'tHooft coupling. We compute the holographic stress tensor of the gravitational solution and it turns out to possess many essential features of the Unruh state for weakly-coupled Hawking radiation, such as the appearance of a negative energy density near the black hol…
We study the spontaneous excitation of a radially polarized static multilevel atom outside a spherically symmetric black hole in multi-polar interaction with quantum electromagnetic fluctuations in the Boulware, Unruh and Hartle-Hawking vacuum states. We find that spontaneous excitation does not occur in the Boulware vacuum, and, in contrast to the scalar field case, spontaneous emission rate is not well-behaved at the event horizon as result of the blow-up of the proper acceleration of the static atom. However, spontaneous excitation can take place both in the Unruh and the Hartle-Hawking vac…
Based on the idea that the vacuum fluctuations of electromagnetic fields can induce instantaneous correlated dipoles, we study the far-zone Casimir-Polder potential between two atoms in the Boulware, Unruh and Hartle-Hawking vacua outside a Schwarzschild black hole. We show that, at spatial infinity, the Casimir-Polder potential in the Boulware vacuum is similar to that in the Minkowski vacuum in flat spacetime with a behavior of $R^{-7}$, so is in the Unruh vacuum as a result of the backscattering of the Hawking radiation from the black hole off the spacetime curvature. However, the interatom…
We consider radiative processes of a quantum system composed by two identical two-level atoms in a black-hole background. We assume that these identical two-level atoms are placed at fixed radial distances outside a Schwarzschild black hole and interacting with a quantum electromagnetic field prepared in one of the usual vacuum states, namely the Boulware, Unruh or the Hartle-Hawking vacuum states. We study the structure of the rate of variation of the atomic energy. The intention is to identify in a quantitative way the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction to the entang…
We study the Hawking effect in terms of the geometric phase acquired by a two-level atom as a result of coupling to vacuum fluctuations outside a Schwarzschild black hole in a gedanken experiment. We treat the atom in interaction with a bath of fluctuating quantized massless scalar fields as an open quantum system, whose dynamics is governed by a master equation obtained by tracing over the field degrees of freedom. The nonunitary effects of this system are examined by analyzing the geometric phase for the Boulware, Unruh and Hartle-Hawking vacua respectively. We find, for all the three cases,…
We introduce a method to compute particle detector transition probability in spacetime regions of general curved spacetimes provided that the curvature is not above a maximum threshold. In particular we use this method to compare the response of two detectors, one in a spherically symmetric gravitational field and the other one in Rindler spacetime to compare the Unruh and Hawking effects: We study the vacuum response of a detector freely falling through a stationary cavity in a Schwarzschild background as compared with the response of an equivalently accelerated detector traveling through an …
We calculate, in the framework of open quantum systems, the ground state energy-level shift for a static two-level atom outside a spherically symmetric black hole in interaction with fluctuating massless scalar fields in the Boulware and Unruh vacuums. We find that the energy-level shift is position-dependent and thus gives rise to a force on the atom besides the classical gravitational force. For the case of the Boulware vacuum which represents a star that has not collapsed through its event horizon, this force is attractive near the horizon and is repulsive far away from the black hole with …
In this work, we propose the quantum Hall system as a platform for exploring black hole phenomena. By exhibiting deep rooted commonalities between lowest Landau level and spacetime symmetries, we show that features of both quantum Hall and gravitational systems can be elegantly captured by a simple quantum mechanical model, the inverted harmonic oscillator. Through this correspondence, we argue that radiation phenomena in gravitational situations, such as presented by W. G. Unruh and S. Hawking, bears a parallel with saddle-potential scattering of quantum Hall quasiparticles. We also find that…
Communication between a free-falling observer and an observer hovering above the Schwarzschild horizon of a black hole suffers from Unruh-Hawking noise, which degrades communication channels. Ignoring time dilation, which affects all channels equally, we show that for bosonic communication using single and dual rail encoding the classical channel capacity reaches a finite value and the quantum coherent information tends to zero. We conclude that classical correlations still exist at infinite acceleration, whereas the quantum coherence is fully removed.
We study the dynamics of an Unruh-DeWitt detector interacting with a massless scalar field in an arbitrary static spherically symmetric spacetimes whose metric is characterised by a single metric function $f(r)$. In order to obtain clean physical insights, we employ the derivative coupling variant of the Unruh-DeWitt model in (1+1) dimensions where powerful conformal techniques enable closed-form expressions for the vacuum two-point functions. Due to the generality of the formalism, we will be able to study a very general class of static spherically symmetric (SSS) background. We pick three ex…
In the lack of a full-fledged theory of quantum gravity, I consider free, scalar, quantum fields on curved spacetimes to gain insight into the interaction between quantum and gravitational phenomena. I employ the Unruh-DeWitt detector approach to probe thermal, quantum effects on static, non-globally hyperbolic spacetimes. In this context, all physical observables depend on the choice of a boundary condition that cannot be singled-out, in general, without resorting to an experiment. Notwithstanding, the framework applied admits a large family of (Robin) boundary conditions and grants us physic…
The quantum theory of linearized perturbations of the gravitational field of a Schwarzschild black hole is presented. The fundamental operators are seen to be the perturbed Weyl scalars $\dotΨ_0$ and $\dotΨ_4$ associated with the Newman-Penrose description of the classical theory. Formulae are obtained for the expectation values of the modulus squared of these operators in the Boulware, Unruh and Hartle-Hawking quantum states. Differences between the renormalized expectation values of both $\bigl| \dotΨ_0 \bigr|^2$ and $\bigl| \dotΨ_4 \bigr|^2$ in the three quantum states are evaluated numeric…
Astrophysical black holes are generally surrounded by accretion disks, galactic matter and the omnipresent cosmic microwave background radiation, thus allowing for the concurrent propagation of both gravitational and sound waves. Recently, acoustic black holes were embedded in Schwarzschild spacetime allowing for the coexistence of event and acoustic horizons. Here, we obtain a class of perturbative solutions to the field equations of the relativistic Gross-Pitaevskii and Yang-Mills theories, which describe sound waves propagating on a curved slowly-rotating acoustic black hole, akin to Lense-…
