In contrast to almost all anisotropic superconductors, the upper critical field of URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ is larger when the field is oriented along the less conducting direction. We present a study of resistivity and Seebeck coefficient extended down to sub-Kelvin temperature range uncovering a singular case of anisotropy. When the current is injected along the c-axis URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ behaves as a low-density Fermi liquid. When it flows along the a-axis, even in presence of a large field, resistivity remains T-linear down to T$_{c}$ and the Seebeck coefficient undergoes a sign change at very low temperatures. We conclude that the characteristic energy scale is anisotropic and vanishingly small in the basal plane.
We propose the magnetic exciton mediated superconductivity occurring in the enigmatic hidden-order phase of URu2Si2. The characteristic of the massive collective excitation observed only in the hidden-order phase is well reproduced by the antiferro hexadecapole ordering model as the trace of the dispersive crystalline-electric-field excitation. The disappearance of the superconductivity in the high-pressure antiferro magnetic phase can naturally be understood by the sudden suppression of the magnetic-exciton intensity. The analysis of the momentum dependence of the magnetic-exciton mode leads …
In the hidden order of URu2Si2 the resistivity at very low temperature shows no T^2 behavior above the transition to superconductivity. However, when entering the antiferromagnetic phase, the Fermi liquid behavior is recovered. We discuss the change of the inelastic term when entering the AF phase with pressure considering the temperature dependence of the Grueneisen parameter at ambient pressure and the influence of superconductivity by an extrapolation of high field data.
This Colloquium reviews the 25 year quest for understanding the continuous (second-order) mean-field-like phase transition occurring at 17.5 K in URu2Si2. About ten years ago, the term hidden order (HO) was coined and has since been utilized to describe the unknown ordered state, whose origin cannot be disclosed by conventional solid-state probes, such as x rays, neutrons, or muons. HO is able to support superconductivity at lower temperatures (Tc ~ 1.5 K), and when magnetism is developed with increasing pressure both the HO and the superconductivity are destroyed. Other ways of probing the HO…
Low-energy quasiparticle (QP) excitations in the heavy-fermion superconductor URu$_2$Si$_2$ were investigated by specific-heat $C(T, H, ϕ, θ)$ measurements of a high-quality single crystal. The occurrence of QP excitations due to the Doppler-shift effect was detected regardless of the field direction in $C(H)$ of the present clean sample, which is in sharp contrast to a previous report. Furthermore, the polar-angle-dependent $C(θ)$ measured under a rotating magnetic field within the ac plane exhibits a shoulder-like anomaly at $θ\sim 45$ deg and a sharp dip at $θ= 90$ deg ($H \parallel a$) in …
The heavy fermion superconductor URu$_2$Si$_2$ is a candidate for chiral, time-reversal symmetry-breaking superconductivity with a nodal gap structure. Here, we microscopically visualized superconductivity and spatially inhomogeneous ferromagnetism in URu$_2$Si$_2$. We observed linear-$T$ superfluid density, consistent with d-wave pairing symmetries including chiral d-wave, but did not observe the spontaneous magnetization expected for chiral d-wave. Local vortex pinning potentials had either four- or two-fold rotational symmetries with various orientations at different locations. Taken togeth…
We report high-resolution inelastic x ray scattering measurements of the acoustic phonons of URu2Si2. We observe minimal change in the phonon structure upon entering the Hidden Order phase. At all temperatures, the longitudinal acoustic phonons are anomalously broad at low q. There is no evidence to suggest that the increase in thermal conductivity in the Hidden Order phase is driven by a change in phonon dispersions or lifetimes. A more likely explanation is that the magnetic excitations in the Hidden Order state contribute to thermal transport.
New inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been performed on URu2Si2 with special focus on the response at Q0=(1,0,0), which is a clear signature of the hidden order (HO) phase of the compound. With polarized inelastic neutron experiments, it is clearly shown that below the HO temperature (T0 = 17.8 K) a collective excitation (the magnetic resonance at E0 \approx 1.7 meV) as well as a magnetic continuum co-exist. Careful measurements of the temperature dependence of the resonance lead to the observation that its position shifts abruptly in temperature with an activation law governed by …
Calorimetry experiments under high pressure were used to clarify the interplay between different states such as superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in CeRhIn5, spin density wave and large moment antiferromagnetism in URu2Si2. Evidences are given on the re-entrance of antiferromagnetism under magnetic field in the superconducting phase of CeRhIn5 up to pc = 2.5 GPa where the Neel temperature will collapse in the absence of superconductivity. For URu2Si2 measurements up to 10 GPa support strongly the coexistence of spin density wave and large moment antiferromagnetism at high pressures.
We focus on inelastic neutron scattering in $URu_2Si_2$ and argue that observed gap in the fermion spectrum naturally leads to the spin feature observed at energies $ω_{res} = 4-6 meV$ at momenta at $\bQ^* = (1\pm 0.4, 0,0)$. We discuss how spin features seen in $URu_2Si_2$ can indeed be thought of in terms of {\em spin resonance} that develops in HO state and is {\em not related} to superconducting transition at 1.5K. In our analysis we assume that the HO gap is due to a particle-hole condensate that connects nested parts of the Fermi surface with nesting vector $\bf{Q}^* $. Within this appro…
We propose an effective model to describe the $A_{2g}$ signal in Raman scattering experiments in the URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ compound. We follow the scheme proposed earlier by Khveshchenko and Wiegmann [Phys. Rev. Lett. 73, 500 (1994)] to calculate the $A_{2g}$ scattering vertex. We extract the imaginary part of a two-point current-current correlation function and compare it directly with the Raman response. We obtain an inelastic peak at $A_{2g}$ channel owing to the interplay between a local staggered ordering and a possible quantum spin liquid behavior. Our results offer an explanation for the el…
We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements in the hidden order state of URu$_{2-x}$Re$_x$Si$_2$ with $x$ = 0.10. We observe that towards the ferromagnetic quantum critical point induced by the negative chemical pressure of Re-doping, the gapped incommensurate fluctuations are robust and comparable in intensity to the parent material. As the Re doping moves the system toward the quantum critical point, the commensurate spin fluctuations related to hidden order weaken, display a shortened lifetime and slow down. Halfway to the quantum critical point, the hidden order phase survives, alb…
This paper has been withdrawn by the authors, because we had probably observed some spurious intensity with x=0.29 sample (Fig.3(b)). This came out after further studies of the detailed x-dependence of the highest energy LO phonon branch in LSCO.
We report a comprehensive investigation of the lattice dynamics of URu$_2$Si$_2$ as a function of temperature using Raman scattering, optical conductivity and inelastic neutron scattering measurements as well as theoretical {\it ab initio} calculations. The main effects on the optical phonon modes are related to Kondo physics. The B$_{1g}$ ($Γ_3$ symmetry) phonon mode slightly softens below $\sim$100~K, in connection with the previously reported softening of the elastic constant, $C_{11}-C_{12}$, of the same symmetry, both observations suggesting a B$_{1g}$ symmetry-breaking instability in the…
We study the influence of inelastic rare-earth impurity scattering on electron-phonon mediated superconductivity and mass renormalization in (La$_{1-x}$Pr$_{x}$)Os$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ compounds. Solving the strong coupling Eliashberg equations we find that the dominant quadrupolar component of the inelastic scattering on Pr impurities yields an enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature T$_c$ in LaOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ and increases monotonically as a function of Pr concentration. The calculated results are in good agreement with the experimentally observed T$_c (x)$ dependence. Our anal…
We address two long-standing questions regarding the hidden order in URu2Si2: Is it associated with the hybridization process, and what are the distinct roles played by the localized and itinerant electrons? Our quasiparticle scattering spectroscopy reveals a hybridization gap ubiquitous in the entire phase space spanned by P and Fe substitutions in URu2Si2, including the no-order and antiferromagnetic regions, with minimal change upon crossing the phase boundary. This indicates its opening isn't associated with the ordering, and thus localized electrons must be the major player. Towards a con…
This Topical Review describes the multitude of unconventional behaviors in the hidden order, heavy fermion, antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases of the intermetallic compound URu$_2$Si$_2$ when tuned with pressure, magnetic field, and substitutions for all three elements. Such `perturbations' result in a variety of new phases beyond the mysterious hidden order that are only now being slowly understood through a series of state-of-the-science experimentation, along with an array of novel theoretical approaches. Despite all these efforts spanning more than 30 years, hidden order (HO) rem…
The results of inelastic neutron scattering provide a solution for the crystal field level scheme in PrOs4Sb12 in which the ground state in the cubic crystal field potential of Th symmetry is a Gamma_1 singlet. The conduction electron mass enhancement is consistent with inelastic exchange scattering, and we propose that inelastic quadrupolar, or aspherical Coulomb, scattering is responsible for enhancing the superconducting transition temperature. PrOs4Sb12 appears to be the first compound in which aspherical Coulomb scattering is strong enough to overcome magnetic pair-breaking and increase T…
An antiferro ordering of an electric hexadecapole moment is discussed as a promising candidate for the long standing mystery of the hidden order phase in URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$. Based on localized $f$-electron picture, we discuss the rationale of the selected multipole and the consequences of the antiferro hexadecapole order of $xy(x^{2}-y^{2})$ symmetry. The mean-field solutions and the collective excitations from them explain reasonably significant experimental observations: the strong anisotropy in the magnetic susceptibility, characteristic behavior of pressure versus magnetic field or temperat…
Motivated by predictions of a substantial contribution of the "buckling" vibration of the CuO2 layers to d-wave superconductivity in the cuprates, we have performed an inelastic neutron scattering study of this phonon in an array of untwinned crystals of YBa2Cu3O7. The data reveal a pronounced softening of the phonon at the in-plane wave vector q = (0, 0.3) upon cooling below ~ 105 K, but no corresponding anomaly at q = (0.3, 0). Based on the observed in-plane anisotropy, we argue that the electron-phonon interaction responsible for this anomaly supports an electronic instability associated wi…
We investigate the spin dynamics in the superconducting phase of UTe$_{2}$ by triple-axis inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal sample. At the wave-vector $\bf{k_1}$=(0, 0.57, 0), where the normal state antiferromagnetic correlations are peaked, a modification of the excitation spectrum is evidenced, on crossing the superconducting transition, with a reduction of the relaxation rate together with the development of an inelastic peak at $Ω$ $\approx$ 1 meV. The low dimensional nature and the the $a$-axis polarization of the fluctuations, that characterise the normal state, are essent…
Despite its seemingly simple composition and structure, the pairing mechanism of FeSe remains an open problem due to several striking phenomena. Among them are nematic order without magnetic order, nodeless gap and unusual inelastic neutron spectra with a broad continuum, and gap anisotropy consistent with orbital selection of unknown origin. Here we propose a microscopic description of a nematic quantum spin liquid that reproduces key features of neutron spectra. We then study how the spin fluctuations of the local moments lead to pairing within a spin-fermion model. We find the resulting sup…
The paramagnon contribution to the quasiparticle inelastic scattering rate in disordered superconductors is presented. Using Anderson's exact eigenstate formalism, it is shown that the scattering rate is Stoner enhanced and is further enhanced by the disorder relative to the clean case in a manner similar to the disorder enhancement of the long-range Coulomb contribution. The results are discussed in connection with the possibility of conventional or unconventional superconductivity in the borocarbides. The results are compared to recent tunneling experiments on LuNi$_{2}$B$_{2}$C.
The discovery of superconductivity in a $d^{9-δ}$ nickelate has inspired disparate theoretical perspectives regarding the essential physics of this class of materials. A key issue is the magnitude of the magnetic superexchange, which relates to whether cuprate-like high-temperature nickelate superconductivity could be realized. We address this question using Ni L-edge and O K-edge spectroscopy of the reduced trilayer nickelate $d^{9-1/3}$ La4Ni3O8 and associated theoretical modeling. A magnon energy scale of ~80 meV resulting from a nearest-neighbor magnetic exchange of $J = 69(4)4$ meV is obs…
Motivated by the discovery of superconductivity in F-doped LaFeAsO, we investigated the magnetic fluctuations in a related compound Fe(Se1-xTex)0.92 (x = 0.75, 1) using neutron scattering techniques. Non-superconducting FeTe0.92 shows antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering with the ordering vector |Q| = 0.97 A-1 (Q = (0.5,0,0.5)) at TN ~ 70 K and a structural transition between tetragonal and monoclinic phases. In the AF monoclinic phase, the low-energy spectral weight is suppressed, indicating a possible gap formation. On the other hand, in the paramagnetic tetragonal phase, we observed a pronounced…
Neutrons have played an important role in advancing our understanding of the pairing mechanism and the symmetry of the superconducting energy gap in the iron arsenide compounds. Neutron measurements of the phonon density-of-state are in good agreement with ab initio calculations, provided the magnetism of the iron atoms is taken into account. However, the predicted superconducting transition temperatures are less than 1 K, making a conventional phononic mechanism for superconductivity highly unlikely. Measurements of the spin dynamics within the spin density wave phase of the parent compounds …
A brief review on major advances in heavy fermion physics is presented including the Ce metal phase diagram, the huge effective mass detected in CeAl3, and the successive discoveries of unconventional superconductivity in CeCu2Si2 and three U based compounds, UBe13, UPt3 and URu2Si2. In order to track the origin of the huge effective mass, the case of intermediate valence compounds is discussed with emphasis of the differences between Yb and Ce materials. The formation of the effective mass is analyzed by two regular- and singular-part contributions. Examples are given for both, antiferromagne…
Explaining the mechanism of superconductivity in the high-$T_c$ cuprates requires an understanding of what causes electrons to form Cooper pairs. Pairing can be mediated by phonons, the screened Coulomb force, spin or charge fluctuations, excitons, or by a combination of these. An excitonic pairing mechanism has been postulated, but experimental evidence for coupling between conduction electrons and excitons in the cuprates is sporadic. Here we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to monitor the temperature dependence of the $\underline{d}d$ exciton spectrum of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$…
Strongly correlated materials are characterized by the presence of electron-electron interactions in their electronic structure. They often have remarkable properties and transitions between competing phases of very different electronic and magnetic order. This thesis focuses on strongly correlated $f$-electron compounds containing Ce, Sm, and U. These materials exhibit a so-called heavy-fermion or Kondo-lattice behavior. They can become insulating due to hybridization effects (Kondo-insulator) or develop multipolar (hidden) order. Kondo insulators have recently been discussed in the context o…
The suppression of superconductivity by substitution effects has been measured in high quality single crystals of U(Pt_{1-x} Pd_x)_3 with 0 <= x <= 0.002. While the superconducting transition temperature T_c varies linearly with residual resistivity r_0, consistent with pair-breaking by impurity potential scattering, the rate of suppression of T_c with r_0 is much larger for Pd substitution than for other impurity substitutions or by increased defect density. This effect is correlated with an increase in the inelastic scattering coefficient, and may be related to Pd-induced changes in the magn…
Within the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism, the interplay between the single particle coherence and superconducting instability in doped cuprates is studied. The superconducting transition temperature increases with increasing doping in the underdoped regime, and reaches a maximum in the optimal doping, then decreases in the overdoped regime, however, the values of this superconducting transition temperature in the whole superconducting range are suppressed to low temperature due to the single particle coherence. Within this superconducting mechanism, we calculate the dynamical…
Nematicity is ubiquitous in electronic phases of high-$T_c$ superconductors, particularly in the Fe-based systems. We used inelastic x-ray scattering to extract the temperature-dependent nematic correlation length $ξ$ from the anomalous softening of acoustic phonon modes in FeSe, underdoped Ba(Fe$_{0.97}$Co$_{0.03}$)$_2$As$_2$ and optimally doped Ba(Fe$_{0.94}$Co$_{0.06}$)$_2$As$_2$. In all cases, we find that $ξ$ is well described by a power law $(T-T_0)^{-1/2}$ extending over a wide temperature range. We attributed this mean-field behavior and the extended fluctuation regime to a sizable nem…
By combining the results of muon spin rotation and inelastic neutron scattering in the heavy fermion compounds Ce1-xLaxAl3 (0.0 <= x <= 0.2), we show that static magnetic correlations are suppressed above a characteristic temperature, T*, by electronic dissipation rather than by thermal disorder. Below T*, an energy gap opens in the single-ion magnetic response in agreement with the predictions of the Anisotropic Kondo Model. Scaling arguments suggest that similar behavior may underlie the "hidden order" in URu2Si2.
Motivated by recent experimental detection of Neel-type ($(π,π)$) magnetic fluctuations in some iron pnictides, we study the impact of competing $(π,π)$ and $(π,0)$ spin fluctuations on the superconductivity of these materials. We show that, counter-intuitively, even short-range, weak Neel fluctuations strongly suppress the $s^{+-}$ state, with the main effect arising from a repulsive contribution to the $s^{+-}$ pairing interaction, complemented by low frequency inelastic scattering. Further increasing the strength of the Neel fluctuations leads to a low-$T_{c}$ d-wave state, with a possible …
The parent compounds of iron-based superconductors are magnetically-ordered bad metals, with superconductivity appearing near a putative magnetic quantum critical point. The presence of both Hubbard repulsion and Hund's coupling leads to rich physics in these multiorbital systems, and motivated descriptions of magnetism in terms of itinerant electrons or localized spins. The NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As series consists of magnetically-ordered bad metal ($x=0$), superconducting ($x\approx0.02$) and magnetically-ordered semiconducing/insulating ($x\approx0.5$) phases, providing a platform to investigate…
Fine pressure ($P$) and magnetic field ($H$) tuning on the ferromagnetic superconductor URhGe are reported in order to clarify the interplay between the mass enhancement, low field superconductivity (SC) and field reentrant superconductivity (RSC) by electrical resistivity measurements. With increasing $P$, the transition temperature and the upper critical field of the low field SC decrease slightly, while the RSC dome drastically shifts to higher fields and shrinks. The spin reorientation field $H_{\rm R}$ also increases. At a pressure $P\sim 1.8$ GPa, the RSC has collapsed while the low fiel…
This paper, I, presents new results from neutron inelastic scattering experiments on single crystals of UPd2Al3. The focus is on the experimental position whilst the sequel, II, advances theoretical perspectives. We present a detailed and complete characterisation of the wavevector- and energy-dependent magnetisation dynamics in UPd2Al3 as measured by neutron inelastic scattering primarily in the form of extensive surveys in energy-momentum space under a wide range of experimental conditions, and put our observations in context with data that has been previously published by two independent gr…
The low energy phonons of two different graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) have been measured as a function of temperature using inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS). In the case of the non-superconductor BaC6, the phonons observed are significantly higher (up to 20 %) in energy than those predicted by theory, in contrast to the reasonable agreement found in superconducting CaC6. Additional IXS intensity is observed below 15 meV in both BaC6 and CaC6. It has been previously suggested that this additional inelastic intensity may arise from defect or vacancy modes in these compounds, unpredicte…
The spin fluctuation spectra from nonsuperconducting Cu-substituted, and superconducting Co-substituted, BaFe2As2 are compared quantitatively by inelastic neutron scattering measurements and are found to be indis- tinguishable. Whereas diffraction studies show the appearance of incommensurate spin-density wave order in Co and Ni substituted samples, the magnetic phase diagram for Cu substitution does not display incommensu- rate order, demonstrating that simple electron counting based on rigid-band concepts is invalid. These results, supported by theoretical calculations, suggest that substitu…
How coherent quasiparticles emerge by doping quantum antiferromagnets is a key question in correlated electron systems, whose resolution is needed to elucidate the phase diagram of copper oxides. Recent resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments in hole-doped cuprates have purported to measure high-energy collective spin excitations that persist well into the overdoped regime and bear a striking resemblance to those found in the parent compound, challenging the perception that spin excitations should weaken with doping and have a diminishing effect on superconductivity. Here we sho…
We have measured the crystalline electric field (CEF) excitations of the CeMIn5 (M = Co, Rh, Ir) series of heavy fermion superconductors by means of inelastic neutron scattering. Fits to a CEF model reproduce the inelastic neutron scattering spectra and the high temperature magnetic susceptibility. The CEF parameters, energy level splittings, and wavefunctions are tabulated for each member of the CeMIn5 series and compared to each other as well as to the results of previous measurements. Our results indicate that the CEF level splitting in all three materials is similar, and can be thought of …
Superconductivity is observed in the filled skutterudite compound \PrOsSb{} below a critical temperature temperature $T_\mathrm{c} = 1.85$ K and appears to develop out of a nonmagnetic heavy Fermi liquid with an effective mass $m^{*} \approx 50 m_\mathrm{e}$, where $m_\mathrm{e}$ is the free electron mass. Features associated with a cubic crystalline electric field are present in magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, electrical resistivity, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements, yielding a Pr$^{3+}$ energy level scheme consisting of a $Γ_{3}$ nonmagnetic doublet ground state, a low l…
We report neutron inelastic scattering measurements on the stoichiometric iron-based superconductor LiFeAs. We find evidence for (i) magnetic scattering consistent with strong antiferromagnetic fluctuations, and (ii) an increase in intensity in the superconducting state at low energies, similar to the resonant magnetic excitation observed in other iron-based superconductors. The results do not support a recent theoretical prediction of spin-triplet p-wave superconductivity in LiFeAs, and instead suggest that the mechanism of superconductivity is similar to that in the other iron-based supercon…
The Heavy Fermion state in UPd2Al3 may be approximately described by a dual model where two of the three U- 5f electrons are in a localized state split by the crystalline electric field into two low lying singlets with a splitting energy of about 6 meV. The third 5f electron has itinerant character and forms the Heavy Electron bands. Inelastic neutron scattering and tunneling experiments suggest that magnetic excitons, the collective propagating crystal field excitations of the localized 5f electrons, mediate superconducting (sc) pairing in UPd2Al3. A theory for this novel mechanism is develop…
The superconducting series, Fe(Te,Se), has a complex structural and magnetic phase diagram that is dependent on composition and occupancy of a secondary interstitial Fe site. In this letter, we show that superconductivity in Fe1+xTe0.7Se0.3 can be enhanced by topotactic deintercalation of the interstitial iron, demonstrating the competing roles of the two iron sites. Neutron diffraction reveals a flattening of the Fe(Te,Se)4 tetrahedron on Fe removal of iron and an increase in negative thermal expansion within the ab plane that correlates with increased lattice strain. Inelastic neutron scatte…

In superconducting copper oxides some Cu-O bond-stretching phonons around 70meV show anomalous giant softening and broadening of electronic origin and electronic dispersions have large renormalization kinks near the same energy. These observations suggest that phonon broadening originates from quasiparticle excitations across the Fermi surface and the electronic dispersion kinks originate from coupling to anomalous phonons. We measured the phonon anomaly in underdoped (x=0.05) and overdoped (x=0.20,0.25) La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ by inelastic neutron and x-ray scattering with high resolution. Co…
Inelastic neutron scattering data for YBaCuO as well as for LaSrCuO indicate incommensurate neutron scattering peaks with incommensuration $δ(x)$ away from the $(π,π)$ point. $T_c(x)$ can be replotted as a linear function of the incommensuration for these materials. This linear relation implies that the constant that relates these two quantities, one being the incommensuration (momentum) and another being $T_c(x)$ (energy), has the dimension of velocity we denote $v^*$: $k_B T_c(x) = \hbar v^* δ(x)$. We argue that this experimentally derived relation can be obtained in a simple model of Joseph…
We use inelastic neutron scattering to study the crystalline electric field (CEF) excitations of Ce$^{3+}$ in CeFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$($x=0,0.16$). For nonsuperconducting CeFeAsO, the Ce CEF levels have three magnetic doublets in the paramagnetic state, but these doublets split into six singlets when Fe ions order antiferromagnetically. For superconducting CeFeAsO$_{0.84}$F$_{0.16}$ ($T_c=41$ K), where the static AF order is suppressed, the Ce CEF levels have three magnetic doublets at $\hbarω=0,18.7,58.4$ meV at all temperatures. Careful measurements of the intrinsic linewidth $Γ$ and the peak …
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements have been performed to investigate the spin waves of the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetic ladder compound BaFe$_2$S$_3$, where a superconducting transition was observed under pressure [H. Takahashi {\it et al.}, Nat. Mater. 14, 1008-1012 (2015); T. Yamauchi {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 246402 (2015)]. By fitting the spherically averaged experimental data collected on a powder sample to a Heisenberg Hamiltonian, we find that the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic ladder exhibits a strong nearest neighbor ferromagnetic exchange interaction (…
Inelastic light scattering is an intensively used tool in the study of electronic properties of solids. Triggered by the discovery of high temperature superconductivity in the cuprates and by new developments in instrumentation, light scattering both in the visible (Raman effect) and the X-ray part of the electromagnetic spectrum has become a method complementary to optical (infrared) spectroscopy while providing additional and relevant information. The main purpose of the review is to position Raman scattering with regard to single-particle methods like angle-resolved photoemission spectrosco…
Spin fluctuations are considered to be one of the candidates that drive a sign-reversed s^{\pm} superconducting state in the iron pnictides. In the magnetic scenario, whether the spin fluctuation spectrum exhibits certain unique fine structures is an interesting aspect for theoretical study in order to understand experimental observations. We investigate the detailed momentum dependence of the short-range spin fluctuations using a 2-orbital model in the self-consistent fluctuation exchange approximation and find that a common feature of those fluctuations that are capable of inducing a fully g…
We present GW based self-energy calculations for the state of coexisting spin-density wave and d-wave superconductivity in a series of cuprate superconductors. In these systems, the spin resonance spectrum exhibits the typical `hour-glass' form, whose upward and downward dispersion branches come from the gapped spin-wave and magnetic scattering of Cooper pairs, respectively. We show that the crossover between these two different dispersion features leads to an abrupt change in slope in the quasiparticle self-energy, and hence the low-energy kink commences in the single-particle quasiparticle s…
In this paper the low-temperature properties of two isostructural canonical heavy-fermion compounds are contrasted with regards to the interplay between antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum criticality and superconductivity. For CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, fully-gapped d-wave superconductivity forms in the vicinity of an itinerant three-dimensional heavy-fermion spin-density-wave (SDW) quantum critical point (QCP). Inelastic neutron scattering results highlight that both quantum critical SDW fluctuations as well as Mott-type fluctuations of local magnetic moments contribute to the formation of Cooper pairs in C…
The discovery of superconductivity in the 122 iron selenide materials above 30 K necessitates an understanding of the underlying magnetic interactions. We present a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of magnetic and semiconducting Ce$_{2}$O$_{2}$FeSe$_{2}$ composed of chains of edge-linked iron selenide tetrahedra. The combined neutron diffraction and inelastic scattering study and density functional calculations confirm the ferromagnetic nature of nearest-neighbour Fe -- Se -- Fe interactions in the ZrCuSiAs-related iron oxyselenide Ce$_{2}$O$_{2}$FeSe$_{2}$. Inelastic measur…
The recent discovery of spin-triplet superconductivity emerging from a non-magnetic parent state in UTe$_2$ has stimulated great interest in the underlying mechanism of Cooper pairing. Experimental characterization of short-range electronic and magnetic correlations is vital to understanding these phenomena. Here we use resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and atomic multiplet-based modeling to shed light on the active debate between 5$f^2$6$d^1$-based models with singlet crystal field states versus 5$f^3$-based models that predict atomic Kramers dou…
We theoretically analyze the intensity of the resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) based on Ansatz that the electron is fractionalized into two components. By fitting the angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data of a cuprate high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ and the accompanied machine learning results obtained before by Yamaji {\it et al.} (arXiv:1903.08060), we determine the paprameters of the two-component fermion model which describes the electron fractionalization. The RIXS spectra are predicted by using this description. We find that the in…
It has been proposed that Sr_2RuO_4 exhibits spin triplet superconductivity mediated by ferromagnetic fluctuations. So far neutron scattering experiments have failed to detect any clear evidence of ferromagnetic spin fluctuations but, instead, this type of experiments has been successful in confirming the existence of incommensurate spin fluctuations near q=(1/3 1/3 0). For this reason there have been many efforts to associate the contributions of such incommensurate fluctuations to the mechanism of its superconductivity. Our unpolarized inelastic neutron scattering measurements revealed that …
