We show how classical and quantum dualities, as well as duality relations that appear only in a sector of certain theories ("emergent dualities"), can be unveiled, and systematically established. Our method relies on the use of morphisms of the "bond algebra" of a quantum Hamiltonian. Dualities are characterized as unitary mappings implementing such morphisms, whose even powers become symmetries of the quantum problem. Dual variables -which were guessed in the past- can be derived in our formalism. We obtain new self-dualities for four-dimensional Abelian gauge field theories.
An algebraic theory of dualities is developed based on the notion of bond algebras. It deals with classical and quantum dualities in a unified fashion explaining the precise connection between quantum dualities and the low temperature (strong-coupling)/high temperature (weak-coupling) dualities of classical statistical mechanics (or (Euclidean) path integrals). Its range of applications includes discrete lattice, continuum field, and gauge theories. Dualities are revealed to be local, structure-preserving mappings between model-specific bond algebras that can be implemented as unitary transfor…
We examine certain classical continuum long wave-length limits of prototype integrable quantum spin chains. We define the corresponding construction of classical continuum Lax operators. Our discussion starts with the XXX chain, the anisotropic Heisenberg model and their generalizations and extends to the generic isotropic and anisotropic gl_n magnets. Certain classical and quantum integrable models emerging from special "dualities" of quantum spin chains, parametrized by c-number matrices, are also presented.
We study the spin- 1/2 two and three dimensional Orbital Compass Models relevant to the problem of orbital ordering in transition metal oxides. We show that these systems display self-dualities and novel (gauge-like) discrete sliding symmetries. An important and surprising consequence is that these models are dual to (seemingly unrelated) recently studied models of p+ip superconducting arrays. The duality transformations are constructed by means of a path-integral representation in discretized imaginary time and considering its Z_{2} spatial reflection symmetries and space-time discrete rotati…
The deconfined quantum critical point (QCP), separating the Néel and valence bond solid phases in a 2D antiferromagnet, was proposed as an example of $2+1$D criticality fundamentally different from standard Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson-Fisher {criticality}. In this work we present multiple equivalent descriptions of deconfined QCPs, and use these to address the possibility of enlarged emergent symmetries in the low energy limit. The easy-plane deconfined QCP, besides its previously discussed self-duality, is dual to $N_f = 2$ fermionic quantum electrodynamics (QED), which has its own self-duality an…
Over the years, many theoretical frameworks have been developed to understand the remarkable physics of the quantum Hall system. In this work we discuss the interplay among quantum wires, Chern-Simons theory, bosonization, and particle-vortex duality, which enable a unified approach for the Laughlin states of the fractional quantum Hall system. Starting from the so-called quantum wires system, which is a semi-microscopic description in terms of 1+1 dimensional theories, we discuss the emergence of 2+1 dimensional low-energy effective field theories by using different maps connecting the micros…
We study a general class of easy-axis spin models on a lattice of corner sharing even-sided polygons with all-to-all interactions within a plaquette. The low energy description corresponds to a quantum dimer model on a dual lattice of even coordination number with a multi dimer constraint. At an appropriately constructed frustration-free Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point, the ground state wavefunction can be exactly mapped onto a classical vertex model on the dual lattice. When the dual lattice is bipartite, the vertex models are bonded and are self dual under Wegner's duality, with the self dual po…
In this study we map the dualities observed in the framework of integrable probabilities into the dualities familiar in a realm of integrable many-body systems. The dualities between the pairs of stochastic processes involve one representative from Macdonald-Schur family, while the second representative is from stochastic higher spin six-vertex model of TASEP family. We argue that these dualities are counterparts and generalizations of the familiar quantum-quantum (QQ) dualities between pairs of integrable systems. One integrable system from QQ dual pair belongs to the family of inhomogeneous …
The theoretical basis of the phenomenon of effective and exact dimensional reduction, or holographic correspondence, is investigated in a wide variety of physical systems. We first derive general inequalities linking quantum systems of different spatial (or spatio-temporal) dimensionality, thus establishing bounds on arbitrary correlation functions. These bounds enforce an {\em effective} dimensional reduction and become most potent in the presence of certain symmetries. {\em Exact} dimensional reduction can stem from a duality that (i) follows from properties of the local density of states, a…
We demonstrate several explicit duality mappings between elasticity of two-dimensional crystals and fracton tensor gauge theories, expanding on recent works by two of the present authors. We begin by dualizing the quantum elasticity theory of an ordinary commensurate crystal, which maps directly onto a fracton tensor gauge theory, in a natural tensor analogue of the conventional particle-vortex duality transformation of a superfluid. The transverse and longitudinal phonons of a crystal map onto the two gapless gauge modes of the tensor gauge theory, while the topological lattice defects map on…
A new "bond-algebraic" approach to duality transformations provides a very powerful technique to analyze elementary excitations in the classical two-dimensional XY and $p$-clock models. By combining duality and Peierls arguments, we establish the existence of non-Abelian symmetries, the phase structure, and transitions of these models, unveil the nature of their topological excitations, and explicitly show that a continuous U(1) symmetry emerges when $p \geq 5$. This latter symmetry is associated with the appearance of discrete vortices and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-type transitions. We …
Motivated by the prospect of attaining Majorana modes at the ends of nanowires, we analyze interacting Majorana systems on general networks and lattices in an arbitrary number of dimensions, and derive various universal spin duals. Such general complex Majorana architectures (other than those of simple square or other crystalline arrangements) might be of empirical relevance. As these systems display low-dimensional symmetries, they are candidates for realizing topological quantum order. We prove that (a) these Majorana systems, (b) quantum Ising gauge theories, and (c) transverse-field Ising …
