The electron temperatures of high-metallicity (12+log(O/H) > 8.2) HII regions have been studied. The empirical ff relations which express the nebular-to- auroral [OIII] line ratio Q_3,O (as well as the nebular-to-auroral [OII] line ratio Q_2,O, and the nebular-to-auroral [NII] line ratio Q_2,N) in terms of the nebular R_3 and R_2 line fluxes in spectra of high-metallicity HII regions are derived, and the electron temperatures t_3,O, t_2,O, and t_2,N in a number of extragalactic HII regions are also determined. Furthermore, the t_2 - t_3 diagram is discussed. It is found that there is a one-to-one correspondence between t_2 and t_3 electron temperatures for HII regions with a weak nebular R_3 lines (logR_ < 0.5). The derived t_2,N - t_3,O relation for these HII regions is similar to commonly used t_2 - t_3 relations. The HII regions with a strong nebular R_3 line flux (logR_3 > 0.5) do not follow this relation. A discrepancy between t_2,N and t_2,O temperatures is found, being the t_2,N temperatures systematically lower than t_2,O ones. The differences are small at low electron temperatures and increases with increasing electron temperatures up to 10% at t=1. The uncertainties in the atomic data may be the cause of this discrepancy.
We present the local HII region metallicity near the site of the recently discovered multiply lensed supernova (SN; "SN Refsdal") at redshift 1.49. "SN Refsdal" is located at the outer spiral arm ($\sim$7 kpc) of the lensed host galaxy, which we have previously reported to exhibit a steep negative galactocentric metallicity gradient. Based on our updated near-infrared integral field spectroscopic data, the gas-phase metallicity averaged in an intrinsic radius of $\sim$ 550 pc surrounding an HII region $\sim$ 200 pc away from the SN site is 12 + log(O/H)$_{\rm PP04N2}$ $\le$ 8.67. The metallici…
The oxygen abundance gradients among nebular emission line regions in spiral galaxies have been used as important constraints for models of chemical evolution. We present the largest ever full-wavelength optical spectroscopic sample of emission line nebulae in a spiral galaxy (M31). We have collected spectra of 253 HII regions and 407 planetary nebulae with the Hectospec multi-fiber spectrograph of the MMT. We measure the line-of-sight extinction for 199 HII regions and 333 PNe; we derive oxygen abundance directly, based on the electron temperature, for 51 PNe; and we use strong line methods t…
Spectra of high-metallicity (12+log(O/H) > 8.2) HII regions where oxygen auroral lines are measurable in both the O+ and O++ zones, have been extracted from the Data Release 6 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our final sample consists of 181 SDSS spectra of HII regions in galaxies in the redshift range from ~0.025 to ~0.17. The t_2,O-t_3,O diagram is examined. In the SDSS HII regions, the electron temperature t_2,O is found to have a large scatter at a given value of the electron temperature t_3,O. The majority of the SDSS HII regions lie below the t_2,O-t_3,O relation derived for HII r…
We analyze the chemical abundances of planetary nebulae and HII regions in the M81 disk for insight on galactic evolution, and compare it with that of other galaxies, including the Milky Way. We acquired Hectospec/MMT spectra of 39 PNe and 20 HII regions, with 33 spectra viable for temperature and abundance analysis. Our PN observations represent the first PN spectra in M81 ever published, while several HII region spectra have been published before, although without a direct electron temperature determination. We determine elemental abundances of helium, nitrogen, oxygen, neon, sulfur, and arg…
We demonstrate the existence of a -local- relation between galaxy surface mass density, gas metallicity, and star-formation rate density using spatially-resolved optical spectroscopy of HII regions in the local Universe. One of the projections of this distribution, -the local mass-metallicity relation- extends over three orders of magnitude in galaxy mass density and a factor of eight in gas metallicity. We explain the new relation as the combined effect of the differential radial distributions of mass and metallicity in the discs of galaxies, and a selective star-formation efficiency. We use …
We present a new set of weak-line abundances of HII regions in M81, based on Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) observations. The aim is to derive plasma and abundance analysis for a sizable set of emission-line targets to study the galactic chemical contents in the framework of galactic metallicity gradients. We used the weak-line abundance approach by deriving electron density and temperatures for several HII regions in M81. Gradient analysis is based on oxygen abundances.Together with a set of HII region abundances determined similarly by us with Multi-Mirror Telescope (MMT) spectra, t…
We examine the gas and stellar metallicities in a sample of HII galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, which possibly contains the largest homogeneous sample of HII galaxy spectra to date. We eliminated all spectra with an insufficient signal-to-noise ratio, without strong emission lines, and without the [OII] lambda3727 Å line, which is necessary for the determination of the gas metallicity. This excludes galaxies with redshift <~ 0.033. Our final sample contains ~700 spectra of HII galaxies. Through emission line strength calibrations and a detailed stellar population analysis employing…
(abridged) We present 8.2m VLT spectroscopic observations of 28 HII regions in 16 emission-line galaxies and 3.6m ESO telescope spectroscopic observations of 38 HII regions in 28 emission-line galaxies. These emission-line galaxies were selected mainly from the Data Release 6 (DR6) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) as metal-deficient galaxy candidates. We collect photometric and high-quality spectroscopic data for a large uniform sample of star forming galaxies including new observations. Our aim is to study the luminosity-metallicity (L-Z) relation for nearby galaxies, especially at its …
The primordial $^4$He abundance (Y$_p$) is one of the key characteristics of Primordial Nucleosynthesis processes that occurred in the first minutes after the Big Bang. Its value depends on the baryon/photon ratio $η\equiv n_b/n_γ$, and is also sensitive to the relativistic degrees of freedom which affect the expansion rate of the Universe at the radiation-dominated era. The most used method of the determination of Y$_p$ is the study of the metal deficient HII regions located in blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDs). In this paper, we discuss in detail various methods of the determination of HII …
Dessart et al., demonstrated that type II supernova (SN II) model spectra present increasing metal line strength with increasing progenitor metallicity. To confront these models with observations, we obtained a large sample of SN II host HII region emission line spectroscopy. We show that inferred SN II host HII region metallicities have a statistically significant correlation with the strength of SN II metal lines, specifically FeII 5018A.
(Abridged) We have obtained new spectrophotometric data for 28 HII regions in the spiral galaxy NGC 300, a member of the nearby Sculptor Group. The detection of auroral lines, including [OIII]4363, [SIII]6312 and [NII]5755, has allowed us to measure electron temperatures and direct chemical abundances for the whole sample. We determine for the first time in this galaxy a radial gas-phase oxygen abundance gradient based solely on auroral lines, and obtain the following least-square solution: 12+log(O/H)=8.57-0.41 R/R25, where the galactocentric distance is expressed in terms of the isophotal ra…
Optical spectra of 25 H II regions in the inner two kpc of the M33 disk have been obtained with the GMOS spectrograph at the Gemini North telescope. The oxygen abundance gradient measured from the detection of the [O III]4363 auroral line displays a scatter of approximately 0.06 dex, a much smaller value than recently reported by Rosolowsky & Simon in this galaxy. The analysis of the abundances for a large sample of H II regions derived from the R23 strong-line indicator confirms that the scatter is small over the full disk of M33, consistent with the measuring uncertainties, and comparable to…
We report the results of spectroscopic observations, obtained with the Gemini North Multi-Object Spectrograph, of 9 planetary nebulae (PNe) and 15 \hii\ regions located in the 5.5\arcmin $\times$5.5\arcmin inner region of the nearby starburst galaxy IC10. Twelve new candidate PNe have been discovered during our pre-imaging phase. Nine of them have been spectroscopically confirmed. The direct availability of the electron temperature diagnostics in several nebulae allowed an accurate determination of the metallicity map of IC10 at two epochs: the present-time from \hii regions and the old/interm…
We present a self-consistent study of the stellar populations and the ionized gas in a sample of 10 HII galaxies with, at least, four measured electron temperatures and a precise determination of ionic abundances following the "direct method". We fitted the spectral energy distribution of the galaxies using the program STARLIGHT in order to quantify the contribution of the underlying stellar population to EW(Hbeta), which amounts to about 10% for most of the objects. We then studied the Wolf-Rayet stellar populations detected in seven of the galaxies. The presence of these populations and the …
Integral field spectroscopy (IFS) is presented for star forming regions in M33. A central area of 300 x 500 pc^2 and the external HII region IC 132, at a galactocentric distance {\sim} 19arcmin (4.69 kpc) were observed with the Potsdam Multi Aperture Spectrophotometer (PMAS) instrument at the 3.5 m telescope of the Calar Alto Hispano- Alemán observatory (CAHA). The spectral coverage goes from 3600 A to 1μm to include from [OII]λ3727 A to the near infrared lines required for deriving sulphur electron temperature and abundance diagnostics. Local conditions within individual HII regions are prese…
(abridged) We present deep archival VLT/FORS1+UVES spectroscopic observations of the system of two blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies SBS 0335-052E and SBS 0335-052W. Our aim is to derive element abundances in different HII regions of this unique system of galaxies and to study spatial abundance variations. We determine abundances of helium, nitrogen, oxygen, neon, sulfur, chlorine, argon and iron. The oxygen abundance in the brighter eastern galaxy varies in the range 7.11 to 7.32 in different HII regions supporting previous findings and suggesting the presence of oxygen abundance variations o…
To place meaningful constraints on Big Bang Nucleosynthesis models, the primordial helium abundance determination is crucial. Low-metallicity HII regions have been used to estimate it since their statistical uncertainties are relatively small. We present a new determination of the primordial helium abundance, based on long slit spectra of the HII region NGC 346 in the small Magellanic cloud. We obtained spectra using three $409'' \times 0.51''$ slits divided in 97 subsets. They cover the range $λ\lambda3600-7400$ of the electromagnetic spectrum. We used PyNeb and standard reduction procedures …
Spectroscopic observations of 63 HII regions in six spiral galaxies (NGC 628, NGC 783, NGC 2336, NGC 6217, NGC 7331, and NGC 7678) were carried out with the 6-meter telescope (BTA) of Russian Special Astrophysical Observatory with the Spectral Camera attached to the focal reducer SCORPIO in the multislit mode with a dispersion of 2.1A/pixel and a spectral resolution of 10A. These observations were used to estimate the oxygen and nitrogen abundances and the electron temperatures in HII regions through the recent variant of the strong line method (NS calibration). The parameters of the radial di…
We investigate the emission properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in various metallicity environments with the Infrared Spectrograph on board Spitzer. Local giant HII regions are used as references as they enable access to the distinct interstellar medium components that contribute to the mid-infrared spectrum of star-forming galaxies: photodissociation regions (PDRs), photoionized gas, stellar clusters, and embedded regions. Three objects are considered, NGC3603 in the Milky Way, 30Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud, and N66 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. From the variation…
We present X-shooter observations of CASSOWARY 20 (CSWA 20), a star-forming (SFR ~6 Msol/yr) galaxy at z=1.433, magnified by a factor of 11.5 by the gravitational lensing produced by a massive foreground galaxy at z=0.741. We analysed the integrated physical properties of the HII regions of CSWA 20 using temperature- and density-sensitive emission lines. We find the abundance of oxygen to be ~1/7 of solar, while carbon is ~50 times less abundant than in the Sun. The unusually low C/O ratio may be an indication of a particularly rapid timescale of chemical enrichment. The wide wavelength covera…
We have obtained deep spectra of 26 planetary nebulae (PNe) and 9 compact HII regions in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 300, and analyzed them together with those of the giant HII regions previously observed. We have determined the physical properties of all these objects and their He, N, O, Ne, S and Ar abundances in a consistent way. We find that, globally, compact HII regions have abundance ratios similar to those of giant HII regions, while PNe have systematically larger N/O ratios and similar Ne/O and Ar/O ratios. We demonstrate that the nitrogen enhancement in PNe cannot be only due to sec…
(abridged)The focus of this work is to study mid-infrared point sources and the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) in the low-metallicity (~0.2 solar) giant HII region N66 using the Spitzer Space Telescope's Infrared Spectrograph. We study 14 targeted infrared point sources as well as spectra of the diffuse ISM that is representative of both the photodissociation regions (PDRs) and the HII regions. Among the point source spectra, we spectroscopically confirm that the brightest mid-infrared point source is a massive embedded young stellar object, we detect silicates in emission associated with t…
We have obtained multi-slit spectroscopic observations from 3700A to 9200A with LRIS at the Keck I telescope for 31 HII regions in the disk of the Andromeda galaxy (M31), spanning a range in galactocentric distance from 3.9 kpc to 16.1 kpc. In 9 HII regions we measure one or several auroral lines ([OIII]4363, [NII]5755, [SIII]6312, [OII]7325), from which we determine the electron temperature (Te) of the gas and derive chemical abundances using the 'direct Te-based method'. We analyze, for the first time in M31, abundance trends with galactocentric radius from the 'direct' method, and find that…
Abridged. Low-metallicity star-forming dwarf galaxies are prime targets to understand the chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium. The HI region provides important constraints on the dispersal and mixing of heavy elements released by successive star-formation episodes. Our primary objective is to study the enrichment of the HI region and the interplay between star-formation history and metallicity evolution. We observed the most metal-poor star-forming galaxy in the Local Universe, I Zw 18, with Hubble/COS. The abundances in the neutral gas are derived from far-UV absorption-lines (HI, …
(abridged) We present deep spectroscopy of a large sample of low-metallicity emission-line galaxies. The main goal of this study is to derive element abundances in these low-metallicity galaxies. We analyze 121 VLT spectra of HII regions in 46 low-metallicity emission-line galaxies. 83 of these spectra are archival VLT/FORS1+UVES spectra of HII regions in 31 low-metallicity emission-line galaxies that are studied for the first time with standard direct methods to determine the electron temperatures, the electron number densities, and the chemical abundances. The oxygen abundance of the sample …
We present the first Herschel PACS and SPIRE images of the low-metallicity galaxy NGC6822 observed from 70 to 500 mu and clearly resolve the HII regions with PACS and SPIRE. We find that the ratio 250/500 is dependent on the 24 mu surface brightness in NGC6822, which would locally link the heating processes of the coldest phases of dust in the ISM to the star formation activity. We model the SEDs of some regions HII regions and less active regions across the galaxy and find that the SEDs of HII regions show warmer ranges of dust temperatures. We derive very high dust masses when graphite is us…
We study the 158 micron [CII] fine-structure line emission from star-forming regions as a function of metallicity. We have measured and mapped the [CII] emission from the very bright HII region complexes N 11 in the LMC and N 66 in the SMC, as well as the SMC HII regions N 25, N 27, N 83/N 84, and N 88, with the FIFI instrument on the Kuiper Airborne Observatory. In both the LMC and SMC, the ratio of the [CII] line to the CO line and to the far-infrared continuum emission is much higher than seen almost anywhere else, including Milky Way star-forming regions and whole galaxies. In the low meta…
We present long slit spectrophotometry of two HII regions: TOL2146-391 and TOL0357-3915. We performed a detailed analysis that involves abundance determinations relaxing the assumption of homogeneous temperature. The temperature inhomogeneities values, t^2, were obtained through two methods: (i) comparing abundances from oxygen recombination lines to abundances from collisionally excited lines and (ii) by using the line intensity ratios of a set of HeI lines together with the HELIO10 program. We find that the HELIO10 program is a good alternative to obtain a t^2 value in photoionized regions w…
Using ACS-HST images to yield continuum subtracted photometric maps in Hαof the Sbc galaxy M51 and the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 4449, we produced extensive (over 2000 regions for M51, over 200 regions for NGC4449) catalogues of parameters of their HII regions: their Hαluminosities, equivalent radii and coordinates with respect to the galaxy centers. From these data we derived, for each region, its mean luminosity weighted electron density, <n_e>, determined from the Hαluminosity and the radius, R, of the region. Plotting these densities against the radii of the regions we find excellent fits…
The oxygen abundances for four dwarf spiral galaxies have been determined using long-slit spectroscopy. The abundances of these galaxies have not previously reported in the literature. Several HII regions were detected in each galaxy. The electronic temperature method could be used only in one region because of the lack of the auroral lines of oxygen or sulfur. Therefore, four different semi empirical methods were used in the abundance determinations and a weighted-average abundance is obtained. The abundances of three of the galaxies are sub solar for all the regions, one of them having a ver…
We suggest an empirical calibration for determination of oxygen and nitrogen abundances and electron temperature in HII regions where the [OII]3727+3729 line (R_2) is not available. The calibration is based on the strong emission lines of OIII, NII, and SII (NS calibration) and derived using the spectra of HII regions with measured electron temperatures as calibration datapoints. The NS calibration makes it possible to derive abundances for HII regions in nearby galaxies from the SDSS spectra where R_2 line is out of the measured wavelength range, but can also be used for the oxygen and nitrog…
Recently, \citet{Nicholls12}, inspired by \emph{in situ} observations of solar system astrophysical plasmas, suggested that the electrons in \HII regions are characterised by a $κ$-distribution of electron energies rather than by a simple Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. Here we have collected together the new atomic data within a modified photoionisation code to explore the effects of both the new atomic data and the $κ$-distribution on the strong-line techniques used to determine chemical abundances in \HII regions. By comparing the recombination temperatures ($T_{\rm rec}$) with the forbidde…
We study the ionized gas spectrum of star forming regions in the Holmberg II galaxy using the optical long-slit spectroscopic observations made at the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS). We estimate the oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur, neon, and argon abundances in individual HII regions and find the average metallicity in the galaxy to be Z=0.1 or 0.3 Zsun depending on the estimation method employed. We use these observations combined with the results of our earlier studies of the Irr galaxy IC 10 and BCD galaxy VII Zw 403 to compare …
