Reliable long-time storage of arbitrary quantum states is a key element for quantum information processing. In order to dynamically decouple a spin or quantum bit from a dephasing environment, we introduce an optimized sequence of $N$ control pulses of finite durations $τ\pp$ and finite amplitudes. The properties of this sequence of length $T$ stem from a mathematically rigorous derivation. Corrections occur only in order $T^{N+1}$ and $τ\pp^3$ without mixed terms such as $T^Nτ\pp$ or $T^Nτ\pp^2$. Based on existing experiments, a concrete setup for the verification of the properties of the advocated realistic sequence is proposed.
Numerically we simulate the effect of optimized coherent control pulses with a finite duration on a qubit in a bath of spins. The pulses of finite duration are compared with ideal instantaneous pulses. In particular, we show that properly designed short pulses can approximate ideal instantaneous pulses up to a certain order in the shortness of the pulse. We provide examples of such pulses, quantify the discrepancy from the ideal case and compare their effect for various ranges of the coupling constants.
A general strategy to maintain the coherence of a quantum bit is proposed. The analytical result is derived rigorously including all memory and back-action effects. It is based on an optimized $π$-pulse sequence for dynamic decoupling extending the Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) cycle. The optimized sequence is very efficient, in particular for strong couplings to the environment.
For molecules and materials responding to femtosecond-scale optical laser pulses, we predict maximum relative excitation of a Raman-active vibrational mode with period T when the pulse has an FWHM duration of 0.42 T. This result follows from a general analytical model, and is precisely confirmed by detailed density-functional-based dynamical simulations for C60 and a carbon nanotube, which include anharmonicity, nonlinearity, no assumptions about the polarizability tensor, and no averaging over rapid oscillations within the pulse. The mode specificity is, of course, best at low temperature and…
We derive an expression for the phase shift of an atom interferometer in a gravitational field taking into account both the finite duration of the light pulses and the effect of a small perturbing potential added to a stronger uniform gravitational field, extending the well-known results for rectangular pulses and at most quadratic potentials. These refinements are necessary for a correct analysis of present day high resolution interferometers.
In this note we give semiclassical consideration of the role of pulse duration in observation of local field effects in the regime of optical switching. We show that the main parameter governing local field influence is the ratio of peak Rabi frequency corresponding to medium inversion and Lorentz frequency of the medium. To obtain significant local field effect, this parameter should be near unity that is valid only for long enough pulses. We also discuss the role of relaxation and pulse shape in this processes.
We investigate an atom interferometer in which large momentum differences between the arms are obtained by using quantum resonances in the atom optics $δ$-kicked rotor. The interferometer can potentially measure the Talbot time (from which $h/m$ can be deduced), the local gravitational field, or can serve as a narrow velocity filter. We present an analytical analysis in the short pulse limit, and a numerical investigation for finite pulse durations. The sensitivity of the interferometer is improved by a moderate violation of the short pulse limit. Remarkably simple relations predict the optima…
The theory of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in a three-level Lambda-scheme of the interaction of an atom or molecule with light, which takes the nonadiabatic processes at the beginning and the end of light pulses into account, is developed.
In the framework of nuclear magnetic resonance, we consider the general problem of the coherent control of a spin coupled to a bath by means of composite or continuous pulses of duration $τ_\mathrm{p}$. We show explicity that it is possible to design the pulse in order to achieve a decoupling of the spin from the bath up to the third order in $τ_\mathrm{p}$. The evolution of the system is separated in the evolution of the spin under the action of the pulse and of the bath times correction terms. We derive the correction terms for a general time dependent axis of rotation and for a general coup…
As demonstrated in our previous work [J. Chem. Phys. 149, 174109 (2018)], the kinetic energy imparted to a quantum rotor by a non-resonant electromagnetic pulse with a Gaussian temporal profile exhibits quasi-periodic drops as a function of the pulse duration. Herein, we show that this behaviour can be reproduced with a simple waveform, namely a rectangular electric pulse of variable duration, and examine, both numerically and analytically, its causes. Our analysis reveals that the drops result from the oscillating populations that make up the wavepacket created by the pulse and that they are …
In the previous paper on this topic it was shown how, for a pulse of arbitrary shape and duration, the drive frequency can be analytically optimized to maximize the amplitude of the population oscillations between the selected two levels in a general many level quantum system. It was shown how the standard Rabi theory can be extended beyond the simple two-level systems. Now, in order to achieve the quickest and as complete as possible population transfer between two pre-selected levels, driving pulse should be tailored so that it produces only a single half-oscillation of the population. In th…
The interaction Hamiltonian of an electron and a quasi-monochromatic pulse of a strong quantized electromagnetic field is examined. Canonical transformations of the field variables are found that allow the division of the system's Hamiltonian in two parts. The first one describes the interaction between an electron and a single collective mode of the field. The properties of this mode are defined by the superposition of the modes corresponding to the pulse wave packet. The second part describes the field fluctuations relatively to the collective mode. The field intensity, pulse duration and tr…
The nitrogen vacancy (NV) color center in diamond is an enormously important platform for the development of quantum sensors, including for single spin and single molecule NMR. Detection of weak single-spin signals is greatly enhanced by repeated sequences of microwave pulses; in these dynamical decoupling (DD) techniques, the key control parameters swept in the experiment are the time intervals, $τ$, between pulses. Here we show that, in fact, the pulse duration offers a powerful additional control parameter. While previously, a non-negligible pulse-width has been considered simply a source o…
Controls of waveforms (pulse durations) of single photons are important tasks for effectively interconnecting disparate atomic memories in hybrid quantum networks. So far, the waveform control of single photon that is entangled with an atomic memory remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrated control of waveform length of the photon that is entangled with an atomic spin-wave memory by varying light-atom interaction time in cold atoms. The Bell parameter S as a function of the duration of photon pulse is measured, which shows that violations of Bell equality can be achieved for the photon pulse i…
The temporal dynamics of double ionization of H2 has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically with few-cycle laser pulses. The main observables are the proton spectra associated to the H^+ + H^+ fragmentation channel. The model is based on the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and treats on the same level the electronic and nuclear coordinates. Therefore it allows to follow the ultrafast nuclear dynamics as a function of the laser pulse duration, carrier-envelope phase offset and peak intensity. We mainly report results in the sequential double ionization regime above 2 10^{14…
We experimentally investigate the atom optics kicked particle at quantum resonance using finite duration kicks. Even though the underlying process is quantum interference it can be well described by an $ε$-pseudoclassical model. The $ε$-pseudoclassical model agrees well with our experiments for a wide range of parameters. We investigate the parameters yielding maximal momentum transfer to the atoms and find that this occurs in the regime where neither the short pulse approximation nor the Bragg condition is valid. Nonetheless, the momentum transferred to the atoms can be predicted using a simp…
We theoretically investigate a scheme for generations of single hard X-ray pulses of controllable duration in the range of 1 ns - 100 ns from a radioactive Mössbauer source. The scheme uses a magnetically perturbed $^{57}$FeBO$_3$ crystal illuminated with recoilless 14.4 keV photons from a radioisotope $^{57}$Co nuclide. Such compact X-ray source is useful for the extension of quantum optics to 10 keV energy scale which has been spotlighted in recent years. So far, experimental achievements are mostly performed in synchrotron radiation facilities. However, tabletop and portable hard X-ray sour…
We investigate the nature of the pulse sequence so that unwanted transitions in quantum systems can be inhibited optimally. For this purpose we show that the sequence of pulses proposed by Uhrig [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{98}, 100504 (2007)] in the context of inhibition of environmental dephasing effects is optimal. We derive exact results for inhibiting the transitions and confirm the results numerically. We posit a very significant improvement by usage of the Uhrig sequence over an equidistant sequence in decoupling a quantum system from unwanted transitions. The physics of inhibition is the …
We present a time-dependent perturbative approach adapted to the treatment of intense pulsed interactions. We show there is a freedom in choosing secular terms and use it to optimize the accuracy of the approximation. We apply this formulation to a unitary superconvergent technique and improve the accuracy by several orders of magnitude with respect to the Magnus expansion.
We analyze a two-level quantum system, describing the phase qubit, during a single-pulse readout process by a numerical solution of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation. It has been demonstrated that the readout error has a minimum for certain values of the system`s basic parameters. In particular, the optimization of the qubit capacitance and the readout pulse shape leads to significant reduction of the readout error. It is shown that in an ideal case the fidelity can be increased to almost 97% for 2 ns pulse duration and to 96% for 1 ns pulse duration.
Spectral and temporal coincidence and single-particle photon wave packets are described and their widths and durations are found. The degree of entanglement is characterized by the experimentally measurable parameter R defined as the ratio of the coincidence and single-particle spectral widths. In the frequency representation, this parameter is found as a function of the pump-pulse duration. This function is shown to have a minimum and even in the minimum, at rather natural conditions, the parameter R is found to be very high (R=73>>1). The Schmidt number K is found for both short and long pum…

We propose technique of simultaneous excitation of disordered qubits providing an effective suppression of inhomogeneous broadening in their spectral density. The technique is based on applying of optimally chosen $π$-pulse with non-rectangular smooth shape. We study excitation dynamics of an off-resonant qubit subjected to strong classical electromagnetic driving field with the fast reference frequency and slow envelope. Within this solution we optimize the envelope to achieve a preassigned accuracy in qubit synchronization.
We present mirror and beamsplitter pulse designs that improve the fidelity of atom interferometry and increase its tolerance of systematic inhomogeneities. These designs are demonstrated experimentally with a cold thermal sample of $^{85}$Rb atoms. We first show a stimulated Raman inversion pulse design that achieves a ground hyperfine state transfer efficiency of 99.8(3)%, compared with a conventional $π$ pulse efficiency of 75(3)%. This inversion pulse is robust to variations in laser intensity and detuning, maintaining a transfer efficiency of 90% at detunings for which the $π$ pulse fideli…
We present experimental measurements on a model quantum system that demonstrate our ability to dramatically suppress qubit error rates by the application of optimized dynamical decoupling pulse sequences in a variety of experimentally relevant noise environments. We provide the first demonstration of an analytically derived pulse sequence developed by Uhrig, and find novel sequences through active, real-time experimental feedback. These new sequences are specially tailored to maximize error suppression without the need for a priori knowledge of the ambient noise environment. We compare these s…
The resonator-induced phase gate is a multi-qubit controlled-phase gate for fixed-frequency superconducting qubits. Through off-resonant driving of a bus resonator, statically coupled qubits acquire a state-dependent phase. However, photon loss leads to dephasing during the gate, and any residual entanglement between the resonator and qubits after the gate leads to decoherence. Here we consider how to shape the drive pulse to minimize these unwanted effects. First, we review how the gate's entangling and dephasing rates depend on the system parameters and validate closed-form solutions against…

A compact high repetition rate attosecond light source based on a standard laser oscillator combined with plasmonic enhancement is presented. At repetition rates of tens of MHz, we predict focusable pulses with durations of ~< 300 attoseconds, and collimation angles ~< 5 degrees. Attosecond pulse parameters are robust with respect variations of driver pulse focus and duration.
A general approach is introduced for the efficient simultaneous optimization of pulses that compensate each other' s imperfections within the same scan. This is applied to broadband Ramsey-type experiments, resulting in pulses with significantly shorter duration compared to individually optimized broadband pulses. The advantage of the cooperative pulse approach is demonstrated experimentally for the case of two-dimensional nuclear Overhauser enhancement spectroscopy. In addition to the general approach, a symmetry-adapted analysis of the optimization of Ramsey sequences is presented. Furthermo…
Spin squeezed states are a class of entangled states of spins that have practical applications to precision measurements. In recent years spin squeezing with one-axis twisting (OAT) has been demonstrated experimentally with spinor BECs with more than 10^3 atoms. Although the noise is below the standard quantum limit, the OAT scheme cannot reduce the noise down to the ultimate Heisenberg limit. Here we propose an experimentally feasible scheme based on optimized quantum control to greatly enhance the performance of OAT to approach the Heisenberg limit, requiring only an OAT Hamiltonian and the …
Modern x-ray sources enable the production of coherent x-ray pulses with a pulse duration in the same order as the characteristic lifetimes of core-hole states of atoms and molecules. These pulses enable the manipulation of the core-hole population during Auger decay processes, modifying the lineshape of the electron spectra. In this work, we present a theoretical model to study those effects in Neon. We identify effects in the Auger-photoelectron coincidence spectrum due to the duration and intensity of the pulses. The normal Auger line-shape is recovered in Auger electron spectrum integrated…
We have examined the profile of an isolated autoionizing resonance driven by a pulse of short duration and moderately strong field. The analysis has been based on stochastic differential equations governing the time evolution of the density matrix under a stochastic field. Having focused our quantitative analysis on the $2s2p({}^1P)$ resonance of Helium, we have investigated the role of field fluctuations and of the duration of the pulse. We report surprisingly strong distortion of the profile, even for peak intensity below the strong field limit. Our results demonstrate the intricate connecti…
We analyze theoretically the impact of background counts on the efficiency of optical communication in the photon-starved regime using the pulse position modulation (PPM) format with direct detection. Degradation of the photon information efficiency is studied in the case when the background count rate is at most comparable with the rate of photodetection events generated by the incoming optical signal. The PPM symbol length is optimized under the constraint of a fixed average spectral power density using an analytical approximation. The results are compared with generalized on-off keying (OOK…
Atom interferometers are a useful tool for precision measurements of fundamental physical phenomena, ranging from local gravitational field strength to the atomic fine structure constant. In such experiments, it is desirable to implement a high momentum transfer "beam-splitter," which may be achieved by inducing quantum resonance in a finite-temperature laser-driven atomic gas. We use Monte Carlo simulations to investigate these quantum resonances in the regime where the gas receives laser pulses of finite duration, and demonstrate that an $ε$-classical model for the dynamics of the gas atoms …
We present a joint experimental and theoretical study of non-sequential double ionization (NSDI) in argon driven by a 3100-nm laser source. The correlated photoelectron momentum distribution (PMD) shows a strong dependence on the pulse duration, and the evolution of the PMD can be explained by an envelope-induced intensity effect. Determined by the time difference between tunneling and rescattering, the laser vector potential at the ionization time of the bound electron will be influenced by the pulse duration, leading to different drift momenta. Such a mechanism is extracted through a classic…
The robustness of an atomic fountain interferometer with respect to variations in the initial velocity of the atoms and deviations from the optimal pulse amplitude is examined. We numerically simulate the dynamics of an interferometer in momentum space with a maximum separation of $20 \hbar k$ and map out the expected signal contrast depending on the variance of the initial velocity distribution and the value of the laser field amplitude. We show that an excitation scheme based on rapid adiabatic passage significantly enhances the expected signal contrast compared to the commonly used scheme c…
Optical quantum memory--the ability to store photonic quantum states and retrieve them on demand--is an essential resource for emerging quantum technologies and photonic quantum information protocols. Simultaneously achieving high efficiency and high-speed, broadband operation is an important task necessary for enabling these applications. In this work, we investigate the optimization of a large class of optical quantum memory protocols based on resonant interaction with ensembles of $Λ$-type level systems with the restriction that the temporal envelope of all optical fields must be Gaussian, …
The aim of dynamical decoupling consists in the suppression of decoherence by appropriate coherent control of a quantum register. Effectively, the interaction with the environment is reduced. In particular, a sequence of $π$ pulses is considered. Here we present exact results on the suppression of the coupling of a quantum bit to its environment by optimized sequences of $π$ pulses. The effect of various cutoffs of the spectral density of the environment is investigated. As a result we show that the harder the cutoff is the better an optimized pulse sequence can deal with it. For cutoffs which…
The origin of the coherences in two-dimensional spectroscopy of photosynthetic complexes remains disputed. Recently it has been shown that in the ultrashort-pulse limit, oscillations in a frequency-integrated pump-probe signal correspond exclusively to electronic coherences, and thus such experiments can be used to form a test for electronic vs. vibrational oscillations in such systems. Here we demonstrate a method for practically implementing such a test, whereby pump-probe signals are taken at several different pulse durations and used to extrapolate to the ultrashort-pulse limit. We present…
Two-color photoassociation of ground state $^6$Li$^{87}$Rb molecules via the $\mathrm{B}^1Π$ electronic state using short pulses near a magnetic Feshbach resonance is studied theoretically. A near-resonant magnetic field is applied to mix the hyperfine singlet and triplet components of the initial wave function and enhance the photoassociation rate, before the population is transferred to the ground state by a second pulse. We show that an increase of up to three orders of magnitude in the absolute number of molecules produced is attainable for deeply bound vibrational levels. This technique c…
We utilize genetic algorithms to find optimal dynamical decoupling (DD) sequences for a single-qubit system subjected to a general decoherence model under a variety of control pulse conditions. We focus on the case of sequences with equal pulse-intervals and perform the optimization with respect to pulse type and order. In this manner we obtain robust DD sequences, first in the limit of ideal pulses, then when including pulse imperfections such as finite pulse duration and qubit rotation (flip-angle) errors. Although our optimization is numerical, we identify a deterministic structure underlie…
Quantum-mechanical investigation is presented to study single attosecond pulse generation by gating high-order harmonic emission from H$_2^+$ molecule in intense laser pulses with time-dependent ellipticity. The high-order harmonic generation from H$_2^+$ molecule in superposition of a left and a right-hand circularly polarized Gaussian pulse is studied and the effect of time duration and carrier-envelope phase of laser field on single attosecond pulse generation is investigated. Using laser field formed by combination of a left and a right-hand elliptically polarized Gaussian pulse, the effec…
