We create a six-qubit linear cluster state by transforming a two-photon hyperentangled state in which three qubits are encoded in each particle, one in the polarization and two in the linear momentum degrees of freedom. For this state, we demonstrate genuine six-qubit entanglement, persistency of entanglement against the loss of qubits, and higher violation than in previous experiments on Bell inequalities of the Mermin type.
Nonlocality and quantum entanglement constitute two special features of quantum systems of paramount importance in quantum information theory (QIT). Essentially regarded as identical or equivalent for many years, they constitute different concepts. Describing nonlocality by means of the maximal violation of two Bell inequalities, we study both entanglement and nonlocality for two and three spins in the XY model. Our results shed a new light into the description of nonlocality and the possible information-theoretic task limitations of entanglement in an infinite quantum system.
We discuss the relation between entanglement and nonlocality in the hidden nonlocality scenario. Hidden nonlocality signifies nonlocality that can be activated by applying local filters to a particular state that admits a local hidden-variable model in the Bell scenario. We present a fully-biseparable three-qubit bound entangled state with a local model for the most general (non-sequential) measurements. This proves for the first time that bound entangled states can admit a local model for general measurements. We furthermore show that the local model breaks down when suitable local filters ar…
We study the relations between quantum coherence and quantum nonlocality, genuine quantum entanglement and genuine quantum nonlocality. We show that the coherence of a qubit state can be converted to the nonlocality of two-qubit states via incoherent operations. The results are also generalized to qudit case. Furthermore, rigorous relations between the quantum coherence of a single-partite state and the genuine multipartite quantum entanglement, as well as the genuine three-qubit quantum nonlocality are established.
Although entanglement is widely recognized as one of the most fascinating characteristics of quantum mechanics, nonlocality remains to be a big labyrinth. The proof of existence of nonlocality is as yet not much convincing because of its strong reliance on Bell's theorem where the assumption of realism weakens the proof. We demonstrate that entanglement and quantum nonlocality are two equivalent aspects of the same quantum wholeness for spacelike separated quantum systems. This result implies that quantum mechanics is indeed a nonlocal theory and lays foundation of understanding quantum nonloc…
We have studied the analytical dynamics of Bell nonlocality as measured by CHSH inequality and entanglement as measured by concurrence for two noisy qubits that have dipole-dipole interaction. The nonlocal entanglement created by the dipole-dipole interaction is found to be protected from sudden death for certain initial states.
Entanglement and nonlocality are both fundamental aspects of quantum theory, and play a prominent role in quantum information science. The exact relation between entanglement and nonlocality is however still poorly understood. Here we make progress in this direction by showing that, contrary to what previous work suggested, quantum nonlocality does not imply entanglement distillability. Specifically, we present analytically a 3-qubit entangled state that is separable along any bipartition. This implies that no bipartite entanglement can be distilled from this state, which is thus fully bound e…
Nonlocality and entanglement are not only the fundamental characteristics of quantum mechanics but also important resources for quantum information and computation applications. Exploiting the quantitative relationship between the two different resources is of both theoretical and practical significance. The common choice for quantifying the nonlocality of a two-qubit state is the maximal violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality. That for entanglement is entanglement of formation, which is a function of the concurrence. In this paper, we systematically investigate the quantitativ…
Entanglement and Bell nonlocality are used to describe quantum inseparabilities. Bell-nonlocal states form a strict subset of entangled states. A natural question arises concerning how much territory Bell nonlocality occupies entanglement for a general two-qubit entangled state. In this work, we investigate the relation between entanglement and Bell nonlocality by using lots of randomly generated two-qubit states, and give out a constraint inequality relation between the two quantum resources. For studying the upper or lower boundary of the inequality relation, we discover maximally (minimally…
We study the Bell nonlocality of high dimensional quantum systems based on quantum entanglement. A quantitative relationship between the maximal expectation value B of Bell operators and the quantum entanglement concurrence C is obtained for even dimension pure states, with the upper and lower bounds of B governed by C.
We study the entanglement and the Bell nonlocality of a coupled two-qubit system, in which each qubit is coupled with one individual environment. We study how the nonequilibrium environments (with different temperatures or chemical potentials) influence the entanglement and the Bell nonlocality. The nonequilibrium environments can have constructive effects on the entanglement and the Bell nonlocality. Nonequilibrium thermodynamic cost can sustain the thermal energy or particle current and enhance the entanglement and the Bell nonlocality. However, the nonequilibrium conditions (characterized b…
Quantum nonlocality can be revealed "via local contextuality" in qudit-qudit entangled systems with $d > 2$, that is, through the violation of inequalities containing Alice-Bob correlations that admit a local description, and Alice-Alice correlations (between the results of sequences of measurements on Alice's subsystem) that admit a local (but contextual) description. A fundamental question to understand the respective roles of entanglement and local contextuality is whether nonlocality via local contextuality exists when the parties have only qubit-qubit entanglement. Here we respond affirma…
We investigate the dynamics of entanglement and nonlocality for multipartite quantum systems under collective dephasing. Using an exact and computable measure for genuine entanglement, we demonstrate the possibility of a non trivial phenomenon of time-invariant entanglement for multipartite quantum systems. We find that for four qubits, there exist quantum states, which are changing continously nevertheless their genuine entanglement remains constant. Based on our numerical results, we conjecture that there is no evidence of time-invariant entanglement for quantum states of three qubits. We po…
We study evolution of entanglement of two two-level atoms in the presence of dissipation caused by spontaneous emission. We find explicit fromulas for the amount of entanglement as a function of time, in the case of destruction of the initial entanglement and possible creation of a transient entanglement between atoms. We also discuss how spontaneous emission influences nonlocality of states expressed by violation of Bell - CHSH inequality. It is shown that evolving system very quickly becomes local, even if entanglement is still present or produced.
The notions of three-particle entanglement and three-particle nonlocality are discussed in the light of Svetlichny's inequality [Phys. Rev. D 35, 3066 (1987)]. It is shown that there exist sets of measurements which can be used to prove three-particle entanglement, but which are nevertheless useless at proving three-particle nonlocality. In particular, it is shown that the quantum predictions giving a maximal violation of Mermin's three-particle Bell inequality [Phys. Rev. Lett. 65, 1838 (1990)] can be reproduced by a hybrid hidden variables model in which nonlocal correlations are present onl…
Quantum entanglement and quantum nonlocality of $N$-photon entangled states $|ψ_{N m}> =\mathcal{N}_{m}[\cosγ|N-m>_{1}|m>_{2} +e^{iθ_{m}}\sinγ|m>_{1}|N-m>_{2}]$ and their superpositions are studied. We indicate that the relative phase $θ_{m}$ affects quantum nonlocality but not quantum entanglement for the state $|ψ_{N m}>$. We show that quantum nonlocality can be controlled and manipulated by adjusting the state parameters of $|ψ_{N m}>$, superposition coefficients, and the azimuthal angles of the Bell operator. We also show that the violation of the Bell inequality can reach its maximal valu…
It is shown that, concerning the experiment described by the authors, their extension to the situation in which Alice's measurement occurs after Bob's is unnecessary and their interpretation misleading.
Understanding the relation between nonlocality and entanglement is one of the fundamental problems in quantum physics. In the bipartite case, it is known that the correlations observed for some entangled quantum states can be explained within the framework of local models, thus proving that these resources are inequivalent in this scenario. However, except for a single example of an entangled three-qubit state that has a local model, almost nothing is known about such relation in multipartite systems. We provide a general construction of genuinely multipartite entangled states that do not disp…
Strong quantum nonlocality was introduced recently as a stronger manifestation of nonlocality in multipartite systems through the notion of local irreducibility in all bipartitions. Known existence results for sets of strongly nonlocal orthogonal states are limited to product states. In this paper, based on the Rubik's cube, we give the first construction of such sets consisting of entangled states in $d\otimes d\otimes d$ for all $d\geq 3$. Consequently, we answer an open problem given by Halder \emph{et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{122}, 040403 (2019)], that is, orthogonal entangled bases …
Quantum nonlocality without entanglement is a fantastic phenomenon in quantum theory. This kind of quantum nonlocality is based on the task of local discrimination of quantum states. Recently, Bandyopadhyay and Halder [Phys. Rev. A 104, L050201 (2021)] studied the problem: is there any set of orthogonal states which can be locally distinguishable, but under some orthogonality preserving local measurement, each outcome will lead to a locally indistinguishable set. We say that the set with such property has hidden nonlocality. Moreover, if such phenomenon can not arise from discarding subsystems…
Quantum teleportation strikingly underlines the peculiar features of the quantum world. We present an experimental proof of its quantum nature, teleporting an entangled photon with such high quality that the nonlocal quantum correlations with its original partner photon are preserved. This procedure is also known as entanglement swapping. The nonlocality is confirmed by observing a violation of Bell's inequality by 4.5 standard deviations. Thus, by demonstrating quantum nonlocality for photons that never interacted our results directly confirm the quantum nature of teleportation.
Entanglement, the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox and Bell's failure of local-hidden-variable (LHV) theories are three historically famous forms of "quantum nonlocality". We give experimental criteria for these three forms of nonlocality in multi-particle systems, with the aim of better understanding the transition from microscopic to macroscopic nonlocality. We examine the nonlocality of N separated spin J systems. First, we obtain multipartite Bell inequalities that address the correlation between spin values measured at each site, and then we review spin squeezing inequalities that ad…
The paper titled "Tripartite entanglement versus tripartite nonlocality in 3-qubit GHZ-class states", (Physical Review Letters 102, 250404 (2009)), does very important work on studying the nature of Svetlichny Inequalities (which are Bell-type inequalities) and sheds light on some important properties and relationship between Svetlichny inequality and tripartite entanglement. It derives a result for the maximum expectation value of Svetlichny operator for GGHZ and MS states. In this comment, it is put forth that there is probably a mistake in the central result derived in the paper.
In quant-ph/0201134 Jennewein et al. report experiments demonstrating entanglement swapping under various conditions. In one instance, they claim to have exhibited Bell inequality violations by a pair of photons prior to performing any entangling operations on the pair. However, the Bell inequality violation results in this case from post-selection of the data, not from quantum non-locality.
The behaviour under particle loss of entanglement and nonlocality is investigated in multipartite quantum systems. In particular, we define a notion of persistency of nonlocality, which leads to device-independent tests of persistent entanglement. We investigate the persistency of various classes of multipartite quantum states, exhibiting a variety of different behaviours. A particular attention is devoted to states featuring maximal persistency. Finally we discuss a link between the symmetry of a state and its persistency, illustrating the fact that too much symmetry reduces the strength of c…
We study the dynamics of genuine multipartite entanglement for quantum systems upto four qubits interacting with general collective dephasing process. Using a computable entanglement monotone for multipartite systems, we observe the feature of freezing dynamics of genuine entanglement for three and four qubits entangled states. We compare the dynamics with that of random states and find that most states exibit this feature. We then study the effects of collective dephasing on genuine nonlocality and find out that although quantum states remain genuinely entangled yet their genuine nonlocality …
Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering is a form of inseparability in quantum theory commonly acknowledged to be intermediate between entanglement and Bell nonlocality. However, this statement has so far only been proven for a restricted class of measurements, namely projective measurements. Here we prove that entanglement, one-way steering, two-way steering and nonlocality are genuinely different considering general measurements, i.e. single round positive-operator-valued-measures. Finally, we show that the use of sequences of measurements is relevant for steering tests, as they can be used to reve…
We examine the possibilities of non-trivial phenomena of time-invariant entanglement and freezing dynamics of entanglement for qutrit-qutrit quantum systems. We find no evidence for time-invariant entanglement, however, we do observe that quantum states freeze their entanglement after decaying for some time. It is interesting that quantum states are changing whereas their entanglement remains constant. We find that the combined action of decoherence free subspaces and subspaces where quantum states decay, facilitate this phenomenon. This study is an extension of similar phenomena observed for …
Quantum separable operations are defined as those that cannot produce entanglement from separable states, and it is known that they strictly surpass local operations and classical communication (LOCC) in a number of tasks, which is sometimes referred to as "quantum nonlocality without entanglement." Here we consider a task with such a gap regarding the trade-off between state discrimination and preservation of entanglement. We show that this task along with the gap has an analogue in a purely classical setup, indicating that the quantum properties are not essential in the existence of a nonzer…
We present a generic method to construct a product basis exhibiting Nonlocality Without Entanglement with $n$ parties each holding a system of dimension at least $n-1$. This basis is generated via a quantum circuit made of control-Discrete Fourier Transform gates acting on the computational basis. The simplicity of our quantum circuit allows for an intuitive understanding of this new type of nonlocality. We also show how this circuit can be used to construct Unextendible Product Bases and their associated Bound Entangled States. To our knowledge, this is the first method which, given a general…
Determining relationships between different types of quantum correlations in open composite quantum systems is important since it enables the exploitation of a type by knowing the amount of another type. We here review, by giving a formal demonstration, a closed formula of the Bell function, witnessing nonlocality, as a function of the concurrence, quantifying entanglement, valid for a system of two noninteracting qubits initially prepared in extended Werner-like states undergoing any local pure-dephasing evolution. This formula allows for finding nonlocality thresholds for the concurrence dep…
Strong nonlocality based on local distinguishability is a stronger form of quantum nonlocality recently introduced in multipartite quantum systems: an orthogonal set of multipartite quantum states is said to be of strong nonlocality if it is locally irreducible for every bipartition of the subsystems. Most of the known results are limited to sets with product states. Shi et al. presented the first result of strongly nonlocal entangled sets in [Phys. Rev. A 102, 042202 (2020)] and there they questioned the existence of strongly nonlocal set with genuine entanglement. In this work, we relate the…
Ryff's Comment raises the question of the meaning of the quantum state. We argue that the quantum state is just the representative of information available to a given observer. Then Ryff's interpretation of one of our experiments and our original one are both admissible.
We experimentally demonstrate the superior discrimination of separated, unentangled two-qubit correlated states using nonlocal measurements, when compared with measurements based on local operations and classical communications. When predicted theoretically, this phenomenon was dubbed "quantum nonlocality without entanglement." We characterize the performance of the nonlocal, or joint, measurement with a payoff function, for which we measure 0.72(2), compared with the maximum locally achievable value of 2/3 and the overall optimal value of 0.75.
While all bipartite pure entangled states are known to generate correlations violating a Bell inequality, and are therefore nonlocal, the quantitative relation between pure-state entanglement and nonlocality is poorly understood. In fact, some Bell inequalities are maximally violated by non-maximally entangled states and this phenomenon is also observed for other operational measures of nonlocality. In this work, we study a recently proposed measure of nonlocality defined as the probability that a pure state displays nonlocal correlations when subjected to random measurements. We first prove t…
Recent work has argued that the concepts of entanglement and nonlocality must be taken seriously even in systems consisting of only a single particle. These treatments, however, are nonrelativistic and, if single particle entanglement is fundamental, it should also persist in a relativistic description. Here we consider a spin-1/2 particle in a superposition of two different velocities as viewed by an observer in a different relativistically-boosted inertial frame. We show that the entanglement survives right up to the speed of light and that the boosted observer would see single-particle viol…
We show that the relation between nonlocality and entanglement is subtler than one naively expects. In order to do this we consider the neutral kaon system--which is oscillating in time (particle--antiparticle mixing) and decaying--and describe it as an open quantum system. We consider a Bell--CHSH inequality and show a novel violation for non--maximally entangled states. Considering the change of purity and entanglement in time we find that, despite the fact that only two degrees of freedom at a certain time can be measured, the neutral kaon system does not behave like a bipartite qubit syste…
We consider multiple entanglement swappings performed on a chain of bipartite states. Each state does not violate CHSH inequality. We show that before some critical number of entanglement swappings is achieved the output state does not violate this inequality either. However, if this number is achieved then for some results of Bell measurements obtained in the protocol of entanglement swapping the output state violates CHSH inequality. Moreover, we show that for different states we have different critical numbers for which CHSH inequality is activated.
We investigate the entanglement and nonlocality properties of one- and two-mode combination squeezed vacuum state (OTCSS, with two-parameter lamda and gamma) by analyzing the logarithmic negativity and the Bell's inequality. It is found that this state exhibits larger entanglement than that of the usual two-mode squeezed vacuum state (TSVS), and that in a certain regime of lamda, the violation of Bell's inequality becomes more obvious, which indicates that the nonlocality of OTCSS can be stronger than that of TSVS. As an application of OTCSS, the quantum teleportaion is examined, which shows t…
Quantum trajectories are used to investigate the EPR-Bohr debate in a modern sense by examining entanglement and nonlocality. We synthesize a single "entanglement molecule" from the two scattered particles of the EPR experiment. We explicitly investigate the behavior of the entanglement molecule rather than the behaviors of the two scattered particles to gain insight into the EPR-Bohr debate. We develop the entanglement molecule's wave function in polar form and its reduced action, both of which manifest entanglement. We next apply Jacobi's theorem to the reduced action to generate the equatio…
We demonstrate how to efficiently derive a broad class of inequalities for entanglement detection in multi-mode continuous variable systems. The separability conditions are established from partial transposition (PT) in combination with several distinct necessary conditions for a quantum physical state, which include previously established inequalities as special cases. Remarkably, our method enables us to support Peres' conjecture to its full generality within the framework of Cavalcanti-Foster-Reid-Drummond multipartite Bell inequality [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99}, 210405 (2007)] that the nonlocali…
Entanglement, quantum steering and nonlocality are distinct quantum correlations which are the resources behind various of quantum information and quantum computation applications. However, a central question of determining the precise quantitative relation among them is still unresolved. Here, we present a mapping criterion between Bell nonlocality and quantum steering in bipartite qudit-qubit system, as well as a mapping criterion between quantum steering and quantum entanglement in bipartite qubit-qudit system, starting from the fundamental concepts of quantum correlations. Precise quantita…
Quantum entanglement plays a central role in many areas of physics, from quantum information science to many-body systems. In order to grasp the essence of this phenomenon, it is fundamental to understand how different manifestations of entanglement relate to each other. In 1999, Peres conjectured that Bell nonlocality is equivalent to distillability of entanglement. The intuition of Peres was that the non-classicality of an entangled state, as witnessed via Bell inequality violation, implies that pure entanglement can be distilled from this state, hence making it useful for most quantum infor…
We show that for two-qubit chained Bell inequalities with an arbitrary number of measurement settings, nonlocality and entanglement are not only different properties but are inversely related. Specifically, we analytically prove that in absence of noise, robustness of nonlocality, defined as the maximum fraction of detection events that can be lost such that the remaining ones still do not admit a local model, and concurrence are inversely related for any chained Bell inequality with an arbitrary number of settings. The closer quantum states are to product states, the harder it is to reproduce…
The maximally entangled state can be in a mixed state as well as the well-known pure state. Taking the negativity as a measure of entanglement, we study the entanglement dynamics of bipartite, mixed maximally entangled states (MMESs) in multipartite cavity-reservoir systems. It is found that the MMES can exhibit the phenomenon of entanglement sudden death, which is quite different from the asymptotic decay of the pure-Bell-state case. We also find that maximal entanglement cannot guarantee maximal nonlocality and the MMES does not correspond to the state with maximal measurement-induced nonloc…
Relativistic bipartite entangled quantum states is studied to show that Nature doesn't favor nonlocality for massive particles in the ultra-relativistic limit. We found that to an observer (Bob) in a moving frame S', the entangled Bell state shared by Alice and Bob appears as the superposition of the Bell bases in the frame S' due to the requirement of the special relativity. It is shown that the entangled pair satisfies the Bell's inequality when the boost speed approaches the speed of light, thus providing a counter example for nonlocality of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen(EPR) paradox.
Quantum correlation between nodes in a network which consist of several independent sources of entanglement and in multipartite entanglement systems are important for general understanding of the nature of nonlocality, quantum information processing and communication. In previous years, demonstrations of network nonlocality for bilocal scenarios have been in the focus. Yet, it has been found that the seminal protocols do not certify entanglement between end nodes, which otherwise require all sources in the network to be of nonlocal nature. This has motivated for development of even stronger co…
Mixed states appear naturally in experiment over pure states. So for studying different notions of nonlocality and their relation with entanglement in realistic scenarios, one needs to consider mixed states. In a recent article [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{108}, 020502 (2012)], a complete characterization of entanglement of an entire class of mixed three qubit states with the same symmetry as Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state known as GHZ-symmetric states, has been achieved. In this paper we investigate different notions of nonlocality of the same class of states. By finding the analytical expres…
Genuine multipartite entanglement has been found in some spin chain systems. However, genuine multipartite nonlocality, which is much rarer than genuine multipartite entanglement, has never been found in any spin chain system. Here we present genuine multipartite nonlocality in a spin chain system. After introducing the definition of genuine multipartite nonlocality and a multipartite Bell-type inequality, we construct a group of joint measurements for the inequality in a one-dimensional ferromagnetic $N$-qubit chain with nearest-neighbor XXZ interaction, and many violations to the inequality …
We analyze interrelation of quantum and classical entanglement. The latter notion is widely used in classical optic simulation of some quantum-like features of light. We criticize the common interpretation that "quantum nonlocality" is the basic factor differing quantum and classical realizations of entanglement. Instead, we point to the breakthrough Grangier et al. experiment on coincidence detection which was done in 1986 and played the crucial role in rejection of (semi-)classical field models in favor of quantum mechanics. Classical entanglement sources produce light beams with the coeffic…
The construction of nonlocal sets of quantum states has attracted much attention in recent years. We first introduce two Lemmas related to the triviality of orthogonality-preserving local measurements. Then we propose a general construction of nonlocal set of $n(d-1)+1$ orthogonal product states in $(\mathbb{C}^{d})^{\otimes n}$. The sets of nonlocal orthogonal product states are also put forward for the multipartite quantum systems with arbitrary dimensions. Our novel construction gives rise to nonlocal sets of orthogonal product states with much less members and thus reveals the phenomenon o…
