We show, based on microscopic models, that fermionic band insulators with multiple bands and strong interband attraction are generically unstable towards nonzero momentum Cooper pairing leading to a pair density wave (PDW) superfluid state. Our first model considers a band insulating state of fermionic atoms in a three-dimensional cubic optical lattice. We show that this insulator is unstable towards an incommensurate PDW in the vicinity of a Feshbach resonance. Our second model is a two-band tight binding model relevant to electrons in solids; we show that the insulating state of this model has a PDW instability analogous to the exciton condensation instability in indirect bandgap semiconductors. We discuss relevant experimental signatures of the PDW state.
We study the superconductivity in 2D fermionic systems near antiferromagnetic instability, assuming that the pairing is mediated by spin fluctuations. This pairing involves fully incoherent fermions and diffusive spin excitations. We show that the competition between fermionic incoherence and strong pairing interaction yields the pairing instability temperature $T_{ins}$ which increases and saturates as the magnetic correlation length $ξ\to \infty$. We argue that in this quantum-critical regime the pairing problem is qualitatively different from the BCS one.
Measurements of transport properties of amorphous insulating indium oxide thin films have been interpreted as evidence of the presence of superconducting islands on the insulating side of a disorder-tuned superconductor-insulator transition. Although the films are not granular, the behavior is similar to that observed in granular films. The results support theoretical models in which the destruction of superconductivity by disorder produces spatially inhomogenous pairing with a spectral gap.
We investigate characteristic features in the spin response of doped three-dimensional topological insulators with odd-parity unequal-spin superconducting pairing, which are predicted to have gapless Majorana surface modes. These Majorana modes contribute to the local spin susceptibility, giving rise to a characteristic temperature behavior of the Knight shift and the spin-lattice relaxation time in magnetic resonance experiments. Because of their different decay lengths, the Majorana modes can be observed and clearly distinguished from the Dirac modes of the topological insulator by local pro…
Interacting many-body systems combining confined and extended dimensions, such as ladders and few layer systems are characterized by enhanced quantum fluctuations, which often result in interesting collective properties. Recently two-dimensional bilayer systems, such as twisted bilayer graphene or ultracold atoms, have sparked a lot of interest because they can host rich phase diagrams, including unconventional superconductivity. Here we present a theoretical proposal for realizing high temperature pairing of fermions in a class of bilayer Hubbard models. We introduce a general, highly efficie…
The superconducting pairing instability---as determined by a divergence of the two-particle susceptibility---is obtained in the mean field (BCS) approximation in the thermodynamic limit. The usual practice is to examine this property for a finite lattice. We illustrate that, while the conclusions remain unchanged, the technical features are very different in the thermodynamic limit and conform more closely with the usual treatment of phase transitions encountered in, for example, the mean-field paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition. Furthermore, by going to the extreme dilute limit, one can di…
We study the effective interactions between Dirac fermions on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator due to the proximity coupling to the magnetic fluctuations in a ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic insulator. Our results show that the magnetic fluctuations can mediate attractive interactions between Dirac fermions of both Amperean and BCS type. In the ferromagnetic case, we find pairing between fermions with parallel momenta, so-called Amperean pairing, whenever the effective Lagrangian for the magnetic fluctuations does not contain a quadratic term. The pairing interaction…
Bi2Se3 is one of a handful of known topological insulators. Here we show that copper intercalation in the van der Waals gaps between the Bi2Se3 layers, yielding an electron concentration of ~ 2 x 10^20cm-3, results in superconductivity at 3.8 K in CuxBi2Se3 for x between 0.12 and 0.15. This demonstrates that Cooper pairing is possible in Bi2Se3 at accessible temperatures, with implications for study of the physics of topological insulators and potential devices.
To guide experimental work on the search for Majorana zero-energy modes, we calculate the superconducting pairing symmetry of a three-dimensional topological insulator in combination with an s-wave superconductor. In analogy to the case of nanowires with strong spin-orbit coupling we show how the pairing symmetry changes across different topological regimes. We demonstrate that a dominant p-wave pairing relation is not sufficient to realize a Majorana zero-energy mode useful for quantum computation. Our main result of this paper is the relation between odd-frequency pairing and Majorana zero e…
We study electronic properties of a superconducting topological insulator whose parent material is a topological insulator. We calculate the temperature dependence of the specific heat and spin susceptibility for four promising superconducting pairings proposed by L. Fu and E. Berg (Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 097001). Since the line shapes of temperature dependence of specific heat are almost identical among three of the four pairings, it is difficult to identify them simply from the specific heat. On the other hand, we obtain wide varieties of the temperature dependence of spin susceptibility for …
We study and classify the proximity-induced superconducting pairing in a topological insulator (TI)-superconductor (SC) hybrid structure for SCs with different symmetries. The Dirac surface state gives a coupling between spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing amplitudes as well as pairing that is odd in frequency for p-wave SCs. We also find that all SCs induce pairing that is odd in both frequency and orbital (band) index, with oddness in frequency and orbital index being completely interchangeable. The different induced pairing amplitudes significantly modifies the density of states in the TI…
We discuss the appearance of odd-frequency spin-triplet s-wave superconductivity, first proposed by Berezinskii [{\it JETP} {\bf 20}, 287 (1974)], on the surface of a topological insulator proximity coupled to a conventional spin-singlet s-wave superconductor. Using both analytical and numerical methods we show that this disorder robust odd-frequency state is present whenever there is an in-surface gradient in the proximity induced gap, including superconductor-normal state (SN) junctions. The time-independent order parameter for the odd-frequency superconductor is proportional to the in-surfa…
It is well known that bosons on an optical lattice undergo a second-order superfluid-insulator transition (SIT) when the lattice potential increases. In this paper we study SIT when fermions coexist with the bosons. We find that the critical properties of particle-hole symmetric SIT with dynamical exponent z=1 is modified when fermions are present; it either becomes a fluctuation-driven first order transition or a different second-order transition. On the other hand the more generic particle-hole asymmetric (with z=2) SIT is stable against coupling with fermions. We also discuss pairing intera…
By analyzing simple models of fermions in lattice potentials we argue that the zero-temperature pairing instability of any ideal band-insulator occurs at a finite momentum. The resulting supersolid state is known as "pair density wave". The pairing momentum at the onset of instability is generally incommensurate as a result of phase-space restrictions and relative strengths of interband and intraband pairing. However, commensurate pairing occurs in the strong-coupling limit and becomes a Cooper-channel analogue of the Halperin-Rice exciton condensation instability in indirect bandgap semicondu…
We investigate the possibility of realizing unconventional superconductivity in doped band insulators on the square lattice and the honeycomb lattice, where the latter is found to be a good candidate due to the disconnectivity of the Fermi surface. We propose applying the theory to the superconductivity in doped layered nitride $β$-$M$NCl ($M=$Hf, Zr). Finally, we compare two groups of superconductors with disconnected Fermi surface, $β$-$M$NCl and the iron pnictides, which have high $T_c$ despite some faults against superconductivity are present.
We study time-reversal-invariant topological superconductivity in topological insulator (TI) thin films including both intra- and inter-surface pairing. We find a nontrivial topology for multiple different configurations. For intra-surface pairing a $π$-phase difference between the intra-surface pairing states is required. We show that in this case the resulting topological phase is highly tunable by both an applied electric field and varied chemical potential. For spin-singlet inter-surface pairing, a sign-changing tunnel coupling present in many TI thin films is needed, and again, the topolo…
Evidence that the pseudogap (PG) in a near-optimally doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ sample destroys the BCS logarithmic pairing instability [1] raises again the question of the role of the PG in the high-temperature superconducting cuprates [2]. The elimination of the BCS instability is consistent with the view that the PG competes with superconductivity. However, as noted in [1], the onset of superconductivity with a $T_c \sim 90$ K suggests an alternative scenario in which the PG reflects the formation of short range pairing correlations. Here, we report results obtained from a dynamic …
We propose three possible momentum-dependent pairing potentials for candidate of topological superconductor (for example Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$), and calculate the surface spectral function and surface density of state with these pairing potentials. We find that the first two can give the same spectral functions as the fully-gapped and node-contacted pairing potentials given in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 097001], and that the third one can obtain topological non-trivial case which exists flat Andreev bound state and preserves the $C_3$ rotation symmetry. We hope our proposals and results be judged by …
The issues of single particle coherence and its interplay with singlet pairing are studied within the slave boson gauge theory of a doped Mott insulator. Prior work by one of us (T. Senthil, arXiv:0804.1555) showed that the coherence scale below which Landau quasiparticles emerge is parametrically lower than that identified in the slave boson mean field theory. Here we study the resulting new non-fermi liquid intermediate temperature regime characterized by a single particle scattering rate that is linear in temperature ($T$). In the presence of a d-wave pair amplitude this leads to a pseudoga…
Recent experiments on the organic compound κ-(ET)_2Cu_2(CN)_3 have provided a promising example of a two dimensional spin liquid state. This phase is described by a two-dimensional spinon Fermi sea coupled to a U(1) gauge field. We study Kohn-Luttinger-like pairing instabilities of the spinon Fermi surface due to singular interaction processes with twice-the-Fermi-momentum transfer. We find that under certain circumstances the pairing instability occurs in odd-orbital-angular-momentum/spin-triplet channels. Implications to experiments are discussed.
We present detailed numerical and analytical investigations of the nonequilibrium dynamics of spin-polarized ultracold Fermi gases following a sudden switching-on of the atom-atom pairing coupling strength. Within a time-dependent mean-field approach we show that on increasing the imbalance it takes longer for pairing to develop, the period of the nonlinear oscillations lengthens, and the maximum value of the pairing amplitude decreases. As expected, dynamical pairing is suppressed by the increase of the imbalance. Eventually, for a critical value of the imbalance the nonlinear oscillations do…
A controversial issue on whether the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) is crucial for high-temperature superconductivity or it is weak and inessential has remained one of the most challenging problems of contemporary condensed matter physics. We employ a continuum RPA approximation for the dielectric response function allowing for a selfconsistent semi-analytical evaluation of the EPI strength, electron-electron attractions, and the carrier mass renormalisation in layered high-temperature superconductors. We show that the Fröhlich EPI with high-frequency optical phonons in doped ionic lattices…
We investigate a possibility of holon pairing for bose condensation based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation obtained from the use of the t-J Hamiltonians of both t he U(1) and SU(2) slave-boson symmetries. It is shown that the vertex function contributed from ladder diagram series involving holon-holon scattering channel in the Bethe-Salpeter equation leads to a singular behavior at a critical temperature at each hole doping concentration, showing the instability of the normal state against holon pairing. We find that the holon pairing instability occurs only in a limited range of hole doping, by…
Despite the robustness of the chiral edge modes of quantum Hall systems against the superconducting proximity effect, Cooper pairs can penetrate into the chiral edge channels and carry the Josephson current in an appropriate setup. In our work, the Josephson junction of a spin-polarized quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI) with a Chern number $ν=1$ connecting conventional superconductors is studied from the perspective of pairing symmetry consistent with the chiral edge mode. Induced pairing states are equal-spin triplet, a combination of the even- and odd-frequency components, nonlocally e…
By bosonizing the electronic t-J model exactly on any two-dimensional (2D) lattices, and integrating out the gauge fluctuations combined to slave particles beyond mean fields, we get a theory in terms of physical Cooper pair and spin condensates. In the sense of mutual Berry phase they turns out to be dual to each other. The mutual-duality is the missing key in the resonant-valance-bond idea\cite{rvb} to work as a paradigm of doped 2D Mott insulators. We argue that essential aspects of high-$T_c$ phenomenology find natural solutions in the theory. We also provide interesting predictions for sy…
We study attractively interacting spin-1/2 fermions on the square lattice subject to a spin population imbalance. Using unbiased diagrammatic Monte Carlo simulations we find an extended region in the parameter space where the Fermi liquid is unstable towards formation of Cooper pairs with non-zero center-of-mass momentum, known as the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. In contrast to earlier mean-field and quasi-classical studies we provide quantitative and well-controlled predictions on the existence and location of the relevant Fermi-liquid instabilities. The highest temperature …
We study two types of models for the superconducting layered nitride $β$-MNCl(M=Hf,Zr); a single band model on a triangular lattice, and a two band model on a honeycomb lattice. We find that the former model does not suffice as an effecitive model, while the latter one can be a good candidate. We propose from the study on the two band model a possibility of spin fluctuation mediated $d+id'$-wave superconductivity in the doped $β$-MNCl. We show that the relatively high $T_c$ obtained in the doped band insulator is a characteristic feature of the spin fluctuation mediated superconductivity on a …
Doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is proposed to be a nematic superconductor originating from unusual inter-orbital pairing. We classify all induced superconducting pair correlations in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and discover that intra-orbital odd-frequency pairing dominates over a significant range of frequencies. Moreover, we explore the contributions of even- and odd-frequency pairing to the Meissner effect, including separating intra- and inter-band processes in the response function. Contrary to expectations, and due to inter-band contributions, we find a diamagnetic odd-frequency Meissner effect.
Copper oxides become superconductors rapidly upon doping with electron holes, suggesting a fundamental pairing instability. The Cooper mechanism explains normal superconductivity as an instability of a fermi-liquid state, but high-temperature superconductors derive from a Mott-insulator normal state, not a fermi liquid. We show that precocity to pair condensation with doping is a natural property of competing antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity on a singly-occupied lattice, thus generalizing the Cooper instability to doped Mott insulators, with significant implications for the high…
The temperature dependence of the London penetration depth $Δλ(T)$ in the superconducting doped topological crystalline insulator Sn$_{1-x}$In$_x$Te was measured down to 450 mK for two different doping levels, x $\approx$ 0.45 (optimally doped) and x $\approx$ 0.10 (underdoped), bookending the range of cubic phase in the compound. The results indicate no deviation from fully gapped BCS-like behavior, eliminating several candidate unconventional gap structures. Critical field values below 1 K and other superconducting parameters are also presented. The introduction of disorder by repeated parti…
We investigate the potential existence of a superconducting phase in $5d$ Mott insulators with an eye to hole doped Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. Using a mean-field method, a mixed singlet-triplet superconductivity, $d + p$, is observed due to the antisymmetric exchange originating from a quasi-spin-orbit-coupling. Our calculation on ribbon geometry shows possible existence of the topologically protected edge states, because of nodal structure of the superconducting gap. These edge modes are spin polarized and emerge as zero-energy flat bands, supporting a symmetry protected Majorana states, verified by eval…
We examine the effect of a spin-active interface on the symmetry of proximity-induced superconducting pairing amplitudes in topological insulators. We develop a model to investigate the leading order contribution to the pairing amplitude considering 3 different kinds of spin-active interfaces: 1) those that induce spin-dependent scattering phases, 2) those that flip the spin of incident electrons, and 3) interfaces that both induce spin-dependent phases and flip the spins of incident electrons. We find that in cases (1) and (3) odd-frequency triplet pairing is induced in the TI while for case …
Nematic Fermi liquid arises when the system of interacting fermions spontaneously breaks the rotational symmetry while the translational symmetry is preserved. We consider a Nematic Fermi liquid of fermions with two distinct quantum numbers. Two quantum numbers represent the spin degrees of freedom or the layer degrees of freedom of the bilayer system. There are two director modes in this system: the in-phase and out-of-phase modes. We find that the out-of-phase (in-phase) mode mediates an attractive (repulsive) interaction between fermions with different quantum numbers. Pairing instability o…
We study proximity-induced superconductivity on the surface of a topological insulator (TI), focusing on unconventional pairing. We find that the excitation spectrum becomes gapless for any spin-triplet pairing, such that both subgap bound states and Andreev reflection is strongly suppressed. For spin-singlet pairing, the zero-energy surface state in the $d_{xy}$-wave case becomes a Majorana fermion, in contrast to the situation realized in the topologically trivial high-$T_c$ cuprates. We also study the influence of a Zeeman field on the surface states. Both the magnitude and direction of thi…
A system of self-consistent integral equations for the superconducting gap is formulated and solved taking account of the instability of the normal phase of bilayered cuprates against charge-density waves. The critical parameters are calculated as a function of the wave vector, temperature, and doping index. It is found that the region in which superconductivity coexists with d-type charge-density waves depends strongly on the doping index. The effective energy-gap parameter, determined as the interval between the peaks of the density of states, can have a local minimum at temperatures T$<$T$_…
It is argued that a superconducting instability appears in the electronic states on the surface of a topological insulator due purely to electromagnetic interactions. The discussion of this instability is based on the analysis of the effective Coulomb interaction and the assumption that the system behaves like a two dimensional Fermi liquid. It is shown that this superconducting instability appears in the p-wave channel (like in the pure QED$_{3}$ case) and an expression for the critical temperature of the transition is provided.
We study how superconducting Tc is affected as an electronic system in a tetragonal environment is tuned to a nematic quantum critical point (QCP). Including coupling of the electronic nematic variable to the relevant lattice strain restricts criticality only to certain high symmetry directions. This allows a weak-coupling treatment, even at the QCP. We develop a criterion distinguishing weak and strong Tc enhancements upon approaching the QCP. We show that negligible Tc enhancement occurs only if pairing is dominated by a non-nematic interaction away from the QCP, and simultaneously if the el…
By means of the continuous unitary transformation similar to a general scheme of the Renormalization Group (RG) procedure we study the issue of symmetry breaking and pairing instability in the system of interacting fermions. Constructing a generalized version of the Bogoliubov transformation we show that formation of the fermion pairs and their superconductivity/superfluidity can appear at different temperatures. It is shown that strong quantum fluctuations can destroy the long-range order without breaking the fermion pairs which may still exist as incoherent and/or damped entities. Such unusu…
We consider a generic two-dimensional system of fermionic particles with attractive interactions and no disorder. If time-reversal symmetry is absent, it is possible to obtain incompressible insulating states in addition to the superfluid at zero temperature. The superfluid-insulator phase transition is found to be second order in type-II systems using a perturbative analysis of Cooper pairing instability in quantum Hall states of unpaired fermions. We obtain the pairing phase diagram as a function of chemical potential (density) and temperature. However, a more careful analysis presented here…
We report evidence that the metallic phase in high Tc cuprate superconductors results from an instability of the quasi 2D-electron gas at densities lower or larger than the critical density for the formation of a Wigner polaronic crystal. The electron gas undergoes a microscopic phase separation between 1) a polaron gas with density 1/8 at the Wigner localization limit and 2) a Fermi liquid confined in a superlattice of quantum stripes. The 2D-polaron gas condenses into a paired unidimensional Wigner charge density wave (CDW) at T<T*~1.4 Tc. Below the superconducting critical temperature the t…
We investigate the competition between the electron-vibron interaction (interaction with the Jahn-Teller phonons) and the Coulomb repulsion in a system with the local pairing of electrons on the 3-fold degenerate lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO). The el.-vib. interaction and the local pairing radically change conductivity and magnetic properties of alkali-doped fullerides $\texttt{A}_{n}\texttt{C}_{60}$, which would have to be antiferromagnetic Mott insulators: we have shown that materials with $n=1,5$ and $\texttt{A}=\texttt{K},\texttt{Rb}$ are conductors but not superconductors; $n…
We discuss the surface spectral function of superconductors realized from a topological insulator, such as the copper-intercalated Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$. These functions are calculated by projecting bulk states to the surface for two different models proposed previously for the topological insulator. Dependence of the surface spectra on the symmetry of the bulk pairing order parameter is discussed with particular emphasis on the odd-parity pairing. Exotic spectra like an Andreev bound state connected to the topological surface states are presented.
We derive simplified Faddeev type equations for the three particle T-matrix which are valid in the Hubbard model where only electrons with opposite spins interact. Using the approximation of dynamical mean field theory these equations are partially solved numerically for the attractive Hubbard model. It is shown that the three particle T-matrix contains a term vanishing $\sim T^2$ at the Thouless (or BCS) instability where the two-particle T-matrix diverges. Based on the three particle term we further derive the low density - strong coupling extension for the two-particle vertex function. We t…
Using functional renormalization group (FRG) approach, we analyze the $η$ pairing in a five d-orbital model for iron-pncitides. We find that the $η$ pairing between two hole pockets is a leading instability at low energy when the two hole pockets are close to a nesting condition. The result suggests that the system can spontaneously enter into a superconducting state with both normal pairing and $η$ paring and the $η$ pairing is driven by the inter-orbital antiferromagnetic exchange coupling while the normal pairing is driven by the intra-orbital antiferromagnetic ones. An effective model at l…
Routes to enhance superconducting instability are explored for doped Mott insulators. With the help of insights for criticalities of metal-insulator transitions, geometrical design of lattice structure is proposed to control the instability. A guideline is to explicitly make flat band dispersions near the Fermi level without suppressing two-particle channels. In a one-dimensional model, numerical studies show that our prescription with finite-ranged hoppings realizes large enhancement of spin-gap and pairing dominant regions. We also propose several multi-band systems, where the pairing is dri…
The nearest-neighbor superexchange-mediated mechanism for d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductivity in the one-band Hubbard model faces the challenge that nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion can be larger than superexchange. To answer this question, we use cellular dynamical mean-field theory (CDMFT) with a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo solver to determine the superconducting phase diagram as a function of temperature and doping for on-site repulsion $U=9t$ and nearest-neighbor repulsion $V=0,2t,4t$. In the underdoped regime, $V$ increases the CDMFT superconducting transition temperature $T_c^d$…
We investigate the competition between the electron-vibron interaction (interaction with the Jahn-Teller phonons) and the Coulomb repulsion in a system with local pairing of electrons on the triply degenerate lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO). The electron-vibron interaction radically changes conductivity and magnetic properties of alkali-doped fullerides AnC60, which should be antiferromagnetic Mott insulators: we have found that materials with n=1,2 and A=K,Rb are conductors but not superconductors; n=3 and A=K,Rb are conductors (superconductors at low temperatures), but with A=Cs a…
Using exact quantum Monte Carlo method, we examine the recent novel electronic states seen in magic-angle graphene superlattices. From the Hubbard model on a double-layer honeycomb lattice with a rotation angle $θ=1.08^{\circ}$, we reveal that an antiferromagnetically ordered Mott insulator emerges beyond a critical $U_c$ at half filling, and with a small doping, the pairing with $d+id$ symmetry dominates over other pairings at low temperature. The effective $d+id$ pairing interaction strongly increase as the on-site Coulomb interaction increases, indicating that the superconductivity is drive…
Superconductivity is a phenomenon where the macroscopic quantum coherence appears due to the pairing of electrons. This offers a fascinating arena to study the physics of broken gauge symmetry. However, the important symmetries in superconductors are not only the gauge invariance. Especially, the symmetry properties of the pairing, i.e., the parity and spin-singlet/spin-triplet, determine the physical properties of the superconducting state. Recently it has been recognized that there is the important third symmetry of the pair amplitude, i.e., even or odd parity with respect to the frequency. …
We study possible superconductivity in a carrier-doped iridium oxide insulator Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$ based on an effective $t_{2g}$ three-orbital Hubbard model on the square lattice with a large spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Numerically solving the linearized Eliashberg equation for the superconducting (SC) gap function with the random phase approximation, we systematically examine both singlet and triplet SC gap functions with possible pairing symmetries and the parameter dependence of the superconductivity. For the realistic SOC $λ$ and Hund's coupling $J/U$ relevant to Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$, namely, f…
A general analysis for the competition between breached pairing (BP) and LOFF pairing mechanisms in asymmetric fermion superfluids is presented in the frame of a four fermion interaction model. Two physical conditions which can induce mismatched Fermi surfaces are considered: (1) fixed chemical potential asymmetry $δμ$ and (2) fixed fermion number asymmetry $α$. In case (1), the BP state is ruled out because of Sarma instability and LOFF state is thermodynamically stable in a narrow window of $δμ$. In case (2), while the Sarma instability can be avoided and both the BP and LOFF states can surv…
We study the effect of the Fermi surface anisotropy on the odd-frequency spin-triplet pairing component of the induced pair potential. We consider a superconductor/ ferromagnetic insulator (S/FI) hybrid structure formed on the 3D topological insulator (TI) surface. In this case three ingredients insure the possibility of the odd-frequency pairing: 1) the topological surface states, 2) the induced pair potential, and 3) the magnetic moment of a nearby ferromagnetic insulator. We take into account the strong anisotropy of the Dirac cone in topological insulators when the chemical potential lies …
We study the non-local superconducting pairing of two interacting Anderson impurities, which has an instability near the quantum critical point from the competition between the Kondo effect and an antiferromagnetic inter-impurity spin exchange interaction. As revealed by the dynamics over the whole energy range, the superconducting pairing fluctuations acquire considerable strength from an energy scale much higher than the characteristic spin fluctuation scale while the low energy behaviors follow those of the staggered spin susceptibility. We argue that the glue to the superconducting pairing…
We use the functional renormalization group method to analyze the phase diagram of a 4-band model for the iron-pnictides subject to band interactions with certain A_{1g} momentum dependence. We determine the parameter regimes where an extended s-wave pairing instability with and without nodes emerges. On the electron-doped side, the parameter regime in which a nodal gap appears is found to be much narrower than recently predicted in arXiv:0903.5547. On the hole-doped side, the extended s-wave pairing never becomes nodal: above a critical strength of the intra-band repulsion, the system favors …
Fermionic superfluids can undergo phase transitions into different kinds of normal regimes, loosely characterized by whether Cooper pairs remain locally stable. If the normal phase retains strong pairing fluctuations, it behaves like a liquid of vortices, which has been observed in cuprate superconductors. We argue that analogous strongly correlated normal states exist in two-dimensional neutral fermion liquids near unitarity, where superfluid is destroyed by fast rotation. These states have non-universal properties, and if they develop as distinct thermodynamic phases they can be characterize…
We show within the slave-boson mean field approximation that the two-dimensional t-J model has an intrinsic instability toward forming a quasi-one-dimensional (q-1d) Fermi surface. This q-1d state competes with, and is overcome by, the d-wave pairing state for a realistic parameter choice. However, we find that a small spatial anisotropy in t and J exposes the q-1d instability which has been hidden behind the d-wave pairing state, and brings about the coexistence with the d-wave pairing. We argue that this coexistence can be realized in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_4 systems
We theoretically study the proximity effect and the inverse proximity effect in a topological insulator/iron-based superconductor heterostructure based on the microscopic model. The superconducting order parameter is self-consistently calculated. Its magnitude decreases when the coupling of these two systems increases. The induced pairing order parameter exhibits negative and positive values, while the negative pairing near the $Γ=(0,0)$ point is dominant. This parameter has twofold symmetry and includes an $s$-wave component and a $d$-wave component. The magnitude of the induced pairing order…
