The UT{\it{fit}} Collaboration has produced several analyses in the context of flavour physics both within and beyond the Standard Model. In this paper we present updated results for the Standard Model analysis of the Unitarity Triangle using the latest experimental and lattice QCD inputs, as well as an update of the Unitarity Triangle analysis in a scenario beyond the Standard Model. Combining all available experimental and theoretical information on $ΔF=2$ processes and using a model-independent parameterization, we extract the allowed New Physics contributions in the $K^0$, $D^0$, $B_d$, and $B_s$ sectors. We observe a departure of the $B_s$ mixing phase from the Standard Model expectation with a significance of about $3σ$.
Starting from a (new physics independent) tree level determination of rhobar and etabar, we perform the Unitarity Triangle analysis in general extensions of the Standard Model with arbitrary new physics contributions to loop-mediated processes. Using a simple parameterization, we determine the allowed ranges of non-standard contributions to |Delta F|=2 processes. Remarkably, the recent measurements from B factories allow us to determine with good precision the shape of the Unitarity Triangle even in the presence of new physics, and to derive stringent constraints on non-standard contributions …
Motivated by the recent hints of lepton flavour non-universality in $B$-meson semi-leptonic decays, we study the constraints of perturbative unitarity on the new physics interpretation of the anomalies in $b \to c \ell \bar ν$ and $b \to s \ell \bar \ell$ transitions. Within an effective field theory approach we find that $2 \to 2$ fermion scattering amplitudes saturate the unitarity bound below 9 TeV and 80 TeV, respectively for $b \to c \ell \bar ν$ and $b \to s \ell \bar \ell$ transitions. Stronger bounds, up to few TeV, are obtained when the leading effective operators are oriented in the …
Unitarity is a fundamental property of any theory required to ensure we work in a theoretically consistent framework. In comparison with the quark sector, experimental tests of unitarity for the 3x3 neutrino mixing matrix are considerably weaker. It must be remembered that the vast majority of our information on the neutrino mixing angles originates from $\overlineν_e$ and $ν_μ$ disappearance experiments, with the assumption of unitarity being invoked to constrain the remaining elements. New physics can invalidate this assumption for the 3x3 subset and thus modify our precision measurements. W…
We review recent results of Lattice QCD calculations relevant for flavour physics. We discuss in particular the hadronic parameters entering the amplitudes of K0-K0bar, D0-D0bar and B0-B0bar mixing, the B- and D-meson decay constants and the form factors controlling B-meson semileptonic decays. On the basis of these lattice results, which are extensively collected in the paper, we also derive our averages of the relevant hadronic parameters.
The aim of the paper is to show that the nowadays experimental data from superallowed nuclear and neutron $β$ decays, and from leptonic and semileptonic decays allow the finding of the most probable numerical form of the KM matrix, as well as the determination of decay constants, $f_{P}$, and of various form factors $f_+(q^2)$, by using a genuine implementation of unitarity constraints. In particular this approach allows the determination of semileptonic form factors that is illustrated on the existing data of $D\rightarrow πl ν$ and $D\rightarrow K lν$ decays.
We describe the present status of the Unitarity Triangle and we give an outlook for its future determinations. We discuss new sets of fundamental flavour parameters and comment briefly on new physics beyond the Standard Model.
We present a general discussion of the unitarity triangle from $ε_K$, $ΔM_{d,s}$ and $K \to πν\overlineν$ in models with minimal flavour violation (MFV), allowing for arbitrary signs of the generalized Inami--Lim functions $F_{tt}$ and $X$ relevant for $(ε_K,ΔM_{d,s})$ and $K \to πν\overlineν$, respectively. In the models in which $F_{tt}$ has a sign opposite to the one in the Standard Model, i.e. $F_{tt}<0$, the data for $(ε_K, ΔM_{d,s})$ imply an absolute lower bound on the $B_d\toψK_{S}$ CP asymmetry $a_{ψK_S}$ of 0.69, which is substantially stronger than 0.42 arising in the case of $F_{tt…
After listing basic properties of the Standard Model (SM) that play the crucial role in the field of flavour and CP violation, we discuss the following topics: 1) CKM matrix and the unitarity triangle. 2) Theoretical framework in a non-technical manner, classifying various extentions of the SM. 3) Particle-Antiparticle mixing and various types of CP violation. 4) Standard analysis of the unitarity triangle. 5) Strategies for the determination of the angles alpha, beta and gamma in non-leptonic B decays. 6) The rare decays K^+ -> pi^+ nu \bar nu and K_L -> pi^0 nu \bar nu 7) Models with minimal…

The unitarity triangle can be determined by means of two measurements of its sides or angles. Assuming the same relative errors on the angles $(α,β,γ)$ and the sides $(R_b,R_t)$, we find that the pairs $(γ,β)$ and $(γ,R_b)$ are most efficient in determining $(\bar\varrho,\barη)$ that describe the apex of the unitarity triangle. They are followed by $(α,β)$, $(α,R_b)$, $(R_t,β)$, $(R_t,R_b)$ and $(R_b,β)$. As the set $\vus$, $\vcb$, $R_t$ and $β$ appears to be the best candidate for the fundamental set of flavour violating parameters in the coming years, we show various constraints on the CKM m…
After reviewing the present experimental constraints on the unitarity triangle, I discuss the various ways in which new physics can manifest itself in measurements of the parameters of the unitarity triangle. Apart from one exception, which I describe, new physics enters principally through new contributions to B0-B0(bar) mixing. Different models of new physics can be partially distinguished by looking at their effects on rare, flavour-changing $B$ penguin decays. (Invited talk given at the Symposium Twenty Beautiful Years of Bottom Physics, Chicago, IL, USA, June 29 -- July 2, 1997.)
A minimal version of the inverse seesaw model featuring only two pairs of TeV-scale singlet neutrinos is discussed from the perspective of non-standard neutrino interactions. A particular attention is paid to the non-standard patterns of flavour and CP violation emerging due to the possibly enhanced non-decoupling effects of the heavy sector and the associated non-unitarity of the effective lepton mixing matrix.
One of the key elements in the testing of the Standard-Model description of CP violation through $B$-meson decays is the direct determination of the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle in a variety of ways. We give a brief overview of the implications of the current $B$-factory data for flavour-symmetry strategies, and discuss new, theoretically clean methods employing pure tree decays of neutral $B_{d,s}$ mesons.
We review the main aspects of Flavour Physics and CP Violation in the Standard Model. After presenting a grand view of the field including a Master Formula for weak decays we discuss i) Standard analysis of the unitarity triangle, ii) The ratio epsilon'/epsilon, iii) Rare decays K^+ -> pi^+ nu barnu and K_L -> pi^0 nu barnu, iv) CP violation in B decays and v) Models with Minimal Flavour Violation. Our review ends with 20 questions that hopefully will be answered in the coming years.
We investigate the relation between non-unitarity of the leptonic mixing matrix and leptogenesis. We discuss how all parameters of the canonical type-I seesaw mechanism can, in principle, be reconstructed from the neutrino mass matrix and the deviation of the effective low-energy leptonic mixing matrix from unitary. When the mass M' of the lightest right-handed neutrino is much lighter than the masses of the others, we show that its decay asymmetries within flavour-dependent leptogenesis can be expressed in terms of two contributions, one depending on the unique dimension five (d=5) operator g…
With the deeper study of Higgs particle, Higgs precision measurements can be served to probe new physics indirectly. In many new physics models, vector-like quarks $T_L,~T_R$ occur naturally. It is important to probe their couplings with standard model particles. In this work, we consider the singlet $T_L,~T_R$ extended models and show how to constrain the $Tth$ couplings through the $h\rightarrowγZ$ decay at high-luminosity LHC. Firstly, we derive the perturbative unitarity bounds on $|y_{L,~R}^{tT}|$ with other couplings set to be zeros simply. To optimize the situation, we take $m_T$ = 400 …
We review the status of the flavour-changing neutral-current processes (FCNC). In particular we discuss: i) Main targets of the field, ii) The theoretical framework for FCNC, iii) Standard analysis of the unitarity triangle, iv) $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$, v) Radiative, rare and CP-violating decays, vi) CP-asymmetries in B-decays, vii) Comparision of the potentials of $K \to πν\barν$ and CP-B asymmetries, vii) Some aspects of the physics beyond the Standard Model.
Assuming that the Kobayashi-Maskawa mechanism gives the dominant contribution to CP violation at low energies, we propose a novel way of testing the flavour sector of the Standard Model which has the potencial for discovering New Physics. Using 3 x 3 unitarity of the V_{CKM} matrix and choosing a complete set of rephasing invariant phases, we derive a set of exact relations in terms of measurable quantities, namely moduli of V_{CKM} and arguments of rephasing invariant quartets. These tests complement the usual analysis in the ρ, ηplane and, if there is New Physics, may reveal its source.
We review the status of rare decays and CP violation in extensions of the Standard Model. We analyze the determination of the unitarity triangle and the model-independent constraints on new physics that can be derived from this analysis. We find stringent bounds on new contributions to K-Kbar and Bd-Bdbar mixing, pointing either to models of minimal flavour violation or to models with new sources of flavour and CP violation in b to s transitions. We discuss the status of the universal unitarity triangle in minimal flavour violation, and study rare decays in this class of models. We then turn t…
A global fit to quark flavour-physics data disfavours the Standard Model with 3.6 standard deviations and points towards new CP-violating physics in meson-antimeson mixing amplitudes. Tevatron data call for a new Bs-Bs-bar mixing phase and new physics in Bd-Bd-bar mixing alleviates the tension on the unitarity triangle driven by B(B-> tau nu). In supersymmetric GUT models the large atmospheric neutrino mixing angle can influence b -> s transitions. I present the results of a recent analysis in an SO(10) GUT model which accomodates the large Bs-Bs-bar mixing phase while simultaneously obeying a…
The purpose of these lectures is to provide the reader with an idea of how we can probe New Physics with quark flavour observables using effective theory techniques. After giving a concise review of the quark flavour structure of the Standard Model, we introduce the effective Hamiltonian for quark weak decays. We then consider the effective Hamiltonian for $ΔF=2$ transitions in the Standard Model and beyond. We discuss how meson-antimeson mixing and CP violation can be described in terms of the $ΔF=1$ and $ΔF=2$ effective Hamiltonians. Finally we present the Unitarity Triangle Analysis and dis…
The recently reported measurements of the CP asymmetry a(psi K) by the BABAR and BELLE collaborations are in good agreement with the standard model (SM) prediction, resulting from the unitarity of the CKM matrix. The so-called minimal flavour violating (MFV) supersymmetric extensions of the standard model, in which the CKM matrix remains the only flavour changing structure, predict a(psi K) similar to the one in the SM. With the anticipated precision in a(psi K) and other CP asymmetries at the B factories and hadron colliders, one hopes to pin down any possible deviation from the SM. We discus…
We make the simple observation that there exists a universal unitarity triangle for all models, like the SM, the Two Higgs Doublet Models I and II and the MSSM with minimal flavour violation, that do not have any new operators beyond those present in the SM and in which all flavour changing transitions are governed by the CKM matrix with no new phases beyond the CKM phase. This universal triangle can be determined in the near future from the ratio (Delta M)_d/(Delta M)_s and sin(2 beta) measured first through the CP asymmetry in B_d^0 to psi K_S and later in K to pi nu nubar decays. Also suita…
I review recent results and prospects for improvement in calculations of hadronic matrix elements relevant to quark flavour phenomenology. I will focus on key quantities for CKM unitarity triangle analyses and for the study of discrepancies between experiment and SM predictions for some flavour observables.
If the mechanism of Supersymmetry breaking is not flavour blind, some flavour symmetry is likely to be needed to prevent excessive flavour changing neutral current effects. We discuss two flavour models (based respectively on a U(2) and on a SU(3) horizontal symmetry) providing a good fit to fermion masses and mixings and particularly constraining the supersymmetry soft breaking terms. We show that, while reproducing successfully the Standard Model fit of the unitarity triangle, it is possible to obtain sizable deviations from the Standard Model predictions for three very clean B-physics obser…
The decay B^0 -> DK^{*0} is well-known to provide excellent potential for a precise measurement of the Unitarity Triangle angle gamma in future experiments. It is noted that the sensitivity can be significantly enhanced by studying the amplitudes relative to those of the flavour-specific decay B^0 -> D_2^{*-}K^+, which can be achieved by analyzing the B^0 -> Dπ^-K^+ Dalitz plot.
Neutrino flavour oscillation is one of the primary indication of the existence of new physics beyond standard model. The presence of small neutrino mass is indispensable to explicate the oscillation among different flavours of neutrino. By the addition of a right handed neutral lepton with the standard model fermions, it is possible to generate tiny neutrino mass. Such additional fermion may induce non-unitarity to the $3\times 3$ PMNS mixing matrix which influences the propagation of neutrino in space-time. In this work the effect of non-unitary mixing matrix is analyzed in neutrino oscillati…
We present here the update of the Unitarity Triangle (UT) analysis performed by the UTfit Collaboration within the Standard Model (SM) and beyond. Continuously updated flavour results contribute to improving the precision of several constraints and through the global fit of the CKM parameters and the SM predictions. We also extend the UT analysis to investigate new physics (NP) effects on $ΔF=2$ processes. Finally, based on the NP constraints, we derive upper bounds on the coefficients of the most general $ΔF=2$ effective Hamiltonian. These upper bounds can be translated into lower bounds on t…
The latest fits to the CKM matrix indicate that alpha=(90.7+4.5-2.9) degrees. The proximity of alpha to a right-angle raises the question: is it merely accidental or is it due to some physics beyond the Standard Model? In the framework of our recently-proposed flavour permutation symmetry, we consider the similarities between the quark and lepton mixing matrices, V and U, arguing that the relative smallness of one element in each suggests common constraints. These constraints link the smallness of V_ub and U_e3 with each other, and with the approximate mu-tau symmetry observed in leptonic mixi…
Precision flavour observables play an important role in the interpretation of results at the LHC in terms of models of new physics. We present the result for the one-loop Z penguin in generic extensions of the standard model which exhibit exact perturbative unitarity. We use Slavnov-Taylor identities to study the implications of unitarity on the renormalisation of the Z penguin, and derive a manifestly finite result that depends on a reduced set of physical couplings.
We present the results of the application of the unitarity-based Dispersion Matrix approach to semileptonic charged-current $B$ decays. This method allows to achieve a non-perturbative and completely model-independent determination of the hadronic form factors. Starting from lattice results available at large values of the momentum transfer, the behaviour of the form factors in their whole kinematical range is obtained without introducing any explicit parameterization of their momentum dependence. We will focus on the analysis of Lepton Flavour Universality by computing the $τ/μ$ ratios of the…
The B^0 -> J/ψK_{S,L} channels are outstanding probes of CP violation. We have a detailed look at the associated Standard-Model uncertainties, which are related to doubly Cabibbo-suppressed penguin contributions, and point out that these usually neglected effects can actually be taken into account unambiguously through the CP asymmetries and the branching ratio of the B^0 -> J/ψpi^0 decay. Using the most recent B-factory measurements, we find a negative shift of the extracted value of beta, which softens the tension in the fits of the unitarity triangle. In addition, this strategy can be used …
In addition to the well-known $B \to D^{(*)} \ell ν_\ell$ decays, semileptonic $B_s \to D_s^{(*)} \ell ν_\ell$ processes offer the possibility to determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element $\vert V_{cb}\vert$. We implement the Dispersive Matrix (DM) approach to describe the hadronic Form Factors (FFs) for the $B_s \to D_s^{(*)}$ transition in the whole kinematical range, starting from recent Lattice QCD computations at large values of the 4-momentum transfer. We extract $\vert V_{cb} \vert$ from the experimental data, obtaining $\vert V_{cb} \vert \cdot 10^3 = (41.7 \pm 1.9)$…
The starting point of these lectures is an introduction to the weak interactions of quarks and the Standard-Model description of CP violation, where the central role is played by the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and the corresponding unitarity triangles. Since the B-meson system will govern the stage of (quark) flavour physics and CP violation in this decade, it will be our main focus. We shall classify B-meson decays, introduce the theoretical tools to deal with them, investigate the requirements for non-vanishing CP-violating asymmetries, and discuss the main strategies to explore CP vio…
We review the salient features of a comparative study of the profile of the CKM unitarity triangle, and the resulting CP-violating phases $α$, $β$ and $γ$ in B decays, in the standard model and in several variants of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), reported recently by us. These theories are characterized by a single phase in the quark flavour mixing matrix and give rise to well-defined contributions in the flavour-changing-neutral-current transitions in K and B decays. We analyse the supersymmetric contributions to the mass differences in the Bd-Bd(bar) and Bs-Bs(bar) system…
We formulate an alternative approach based on unitarity triangles to describe neutrino oscillations in presence of non-standard interactions (NSI). Using perturbation theory, we derive the expression for the oscillation probability in case of NSI and cast it in terms of the three independent parameters of the leptonic unitarity triangle (LUT). The form invariance of the probability expression (even in presence of new physics scenario as long as the mixing matrix is unitary) facilitates a neat geometric view of neutrino oscillations in terms of LUT. We examine the regime of validity of perturba…

We present the update of the Unitarity Triangle (UT) analysis within the Standard Model (SM) and beyond. Within the SM, combining the direct measurements on sides and angles, the UT turns out to be overconstraint in a consistent way, showing that the CKM matrix is the dominant source of flavour mixing and CP-violation and that New Physics (NP) effects can appear at most as small corrections to the CKM picture. Generalizing the UT analysis to investigate NP effects, constraints on b -> s transitions are also included and both CKM and NP parameters are fitted simultaneously. While no evidence of…

Based on flavour symmetries only, there are two ways to give rise to an effective description of flavour physics in the quark sector close to the CKM picture: one is based on $U(3)_q\times U(3)_u\times U(3)_d$ (or equivalent) and the other on $U(2)_q\times U(2)_u\times U(2)_d$ (or equivalent). In this context we analyze the current status of flavour physics measurements and we compare their impact, in the specific case of supersymmetry, with the direct searches of new particles at the LHC, present or foreseen.
This is a written version of a series of lectures aimed at graduate students in particle theory/string theory/particle experiment familiar with the basics of the Standard Model. We explain the many reasons for the interest in flavour physics. We describe flavour physics and the related CP violation within the Standard Model, and explain how the B-factories proved that the Kobayashi-Maskawa mechanism dominates the CP violation that is observed in meson decays. We explain the implications of flavour physics for new physics. We emphasize the "new physics flavour puzzle". As an explicit example, w…
In these proceedings we provide a brief overview of the status of flavour physics, with focus on opportunities to discover New Physics in flavour-violating decays at current and future colliders.
This paper has been temporarily withdrawn by the author. A modified version will be resubmitted. One of the trivial solutions was missed with crucial bearing on conclusions.
By using the most recent determinations of the several theoretical and experimental input parameters, we update the Unitarity Triangle analysis in the Standard Model and discuss the sensitivity to New Physics effects. We investigate the interest of measuring with a better precision the various physical quantities entering the Unitarity Triangle analysis and study in a model independent way whether, despite the undoubted success of the CKM mechanism in the Standard Model, the Unitarity Triangle analysis still allows the presence of New Physics.
We present an overview of what we learned so far from low-energy flavour observables, concerning physics beyond the Standard Model, and what we could still learn from further studies in flavour physics in the next few years.
We emphasize that the recent measurements of the B^0_s - bar B^0_s mass difference Delta M_s by the CDF and D0 collaborations offer an important model independent test of minimal flavour violation (MFV). The improved measurements of the angle gamma in the unitarity triangle and of |V_ub| from tree level decays, combined with future accurate measurements of Delta M_s, S_{psi K_S}, S_{psi phi}, Br(B_{d,s} -> mu+ mu-), Br(B -> X_{d,s} nu bar nu), Br(K+ -> pi+ nu bar nu) and Br(K_L -> pi^0 nu bar nu) and improved values of the relevant non-perturbative parameters, will allow to test the MFV hypoth…
Flavour physics represents a unique test bench for the Standard Model (SM). New analyses performed at the LHC experiments are now providing unprecedented insights into CKM metrology and new evidences for rare decays. The CKM picture can provide very precise SM predictions through global analyses. We present here the results of the latest global SM analysis performed by the UTfit collaboration including all the most updated inputs from experiments, lattice QCD and phenomenological calculations. In addition, the Unitarity Triangle (UT) analysis can be used to constrain the parameter space in pos…
We give a pedagogical review of flavour and CP violation in the lepton sector, with a particular emphasis on new physics - and in particular supersymmetric - contributions to flavour and CP violating observables involving leptons.
The origin of flavour and CP violation is among the most important open questions in particle physics. Imminent results from the LHC as well as planned dedicated flavour physics experiments might help to shed light on this puzzle. This talk concentrates on the NP sensitivity of the rare B decays B(s,d) -> mu+ mu- and B -> K* mu+ mu- and of the CP violating phase in B(s) mixing. A brief summary of a supersymmetric model with interesting signatures in the flavour sector is presented.
We discuss the role of flavour physics in building effective theories at the TeV scale. Particular attention is devoted to the Minimal Flavour Violation hypothesis, both in the quark and in the lepton sector. Alternative flavour-protection mechanisms, such as the hierarchical fermion profiles of models with a warped fifth dimension, are also briefly discussed.
Based on a view of current flavour physics and motivated by the hierarchy problem and by the pattern of quark masses and mixings, I describe a picture of flavour physics that should give rise in a not too distant future to observable deviations from the SM in Higgs compositeness and/or in B-decays with violations of Lepton Flavour Universality, as hinted by current data, or perhaps even in supersymmetry, depending on the specific realisation.
If a new massive vector boson with nonzero axial couplings to fermions will be observed at LHC, then an upper limit on the scale of new physics could be derived from unitarity of $\mathcal{S}$-matrix. The new physics will involve either new massive fermions, or scalars, or even a strongly coupled sector. We derive a model independent bound on the scale of new physics. If $M_{G}/ g_{A} < 3$ TeV and the fermion is a top quark, the upper limit is 78 TeV.
We present an overview of SuperIso v4.1 which is a public program for the calculation of flavour physics observables. We give examples of using SuperIso to constrain new physics scenarios with kaon physics and present the implications of rare B-decays.
The open problems and the most recent developments in flavour physics are briefly reviewed. Particular attention is devoted to the current "anomalies" in the CKM picture and their possible interpretation in beyond-the-Standard-Model frameworks.
These notes represent a summary of three lectures on flavour and CP violation, given at the CERNs European School of High Energy Physics in 2014. They cover flavour physics within the standard model, phenomenology of CP violation in meson mixing and decays, as well as constraints of flavour observableson physics beyond the standard model. In preparing the lectures (and consequently this summary) I drew heavily from several existing excellent and exhaustive sets of lecture notes and reviews on flavour physics and CP violation [1]. The reader is encouraged to consult those as well as the origina…
We report on a comparative study of the profile of the CKM unitarity triangle, and the resulting CP asymmetries in B decays, in the standard model and in several variants of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), characterized by a single phase in the quark flavour mixing matrix. The supersymmetric contributions to the mass differences ΔM_d, ΔM_s and to the CP-violating quantity |ε| are, to an excellent approximation, equal to each other in these theories, allowing for a particularly simple way of implementing the resulting constraints on the elements of V_{CKM} from the present kno…
We compute the helicity amplitudes for boson-boson scattering at high energy due to the operators $Ø_{BΦ}$, $Ø_{WΦ}$ and $Ø_{UB}$, and we derive the corresponding unitarity bounds. Thus, we provide relations between the couplings of these operators and the corresponding New Physics thresholds, where either unitarity is saturated or new degrees of freedom are excited. We compare the results with those previously obtained for the operators $Ø_W$ and $Ø_{UW}$ and we discuss their implications for direct and indirect tests at present and future colliders. The present treatment completes the study …
Squark and gluino decays are governed by the same mixing matrices as the contributions to flavour violating loop transitions of B-mesons. This allows for possible direct correlations between flavour non-diagonal observables in B and high-p_T physics. The present bounds on squark mixing, induced by the low-energy data on b to s transitions, still allow for large contributions to flavour violating squark decays at tree level. Due to the restrictions in flavour tagging at the LHC, additional information from future flavour experiments will be necessary to interpret those LHC data properly. Also t…
These lecture notes provide an introduction to the theoretical concepts of flavour physics and CP violation, based on a series of lectures given at the ESHEP 2016 summer school. In the first lecture we review the basics of flavour and CP violation in the Standard Model. The second lecture is dedicated to the phenomenology of K and B meson decays, where we focus on a few representative observables. In the third lecture we give an introduction to flavour physics beyond the Standard Model, both within the framework of Minimal Flavour Violation and beyond.
In effective field theories it is common to identify the onset of new physics with the violation of tree-level unitarity. However, we show that this is parametrically incorrect in the case of chiral perturbation theory, and is probably theoretically incorrect in general. In the chiral theory, we explore perturbative unitarity violation as a function of the number of colors and the number of flavors, holding the scale of the "new physics" (i.e. QCD) fixed. This demonstrates that the onset of new physics is parametrically uncorrelated with tree-unitarity violation. When the latter scale is lower…
