In this paper, we calculate the explicit expression for the fugacity for two- and three-dimensional weakly interacting Bose and Fermi gases from their equations of state in isochoric and isobaric processes, respectively, based on the mathematical result of the boundary problem of analytic functions --- the homogeneous Riemann-Hilbert problem. We also discuss the Bose-Einstein condensation phase transition of three-dimensional hard-sphere Bose gases.
In one of the very few exact quantum mechanical calculations of fugacity coefficients, Dodd and Gibbs (\textit{J. Math.Phys}.,\textbf{15}, 41 (1974)) obtained $b_{2}$ and $b_{3}$ for a one dimensional Bose gas, subject to repulsive delta-function interactions, by direct integration of the wave functions. For $b_{2}$, we have shown (\textit{Mol. Phys}.,\textbf{103}, 1301 (2005)) that Dodd and Gibbs' result can be obtained from a phase shift formalism, if one also includes the contribution of oscillating terms, usually contributing only in 1 dimension. We demonstrate here a series of exact mappings between particular cases of four statistical physics models: equilibrium 1-dimensional lattice gas with nearest-neighbor repulsion, $(1+1)$-dimensional combinatorial heap of pieces, random walks on half-plane and totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) in one dimension (1D). In particular, we show that generating function of a steady state of one-dimensional TASEP with open boundaries can be interpreted as a quotient of partition functions of 1D hard-core lattice gases with one adsorbing lattice site and negative fugacity. A mistake of the effective interaction between D-dimensional Bose atoms [arXiv:cond-mat/0503523] that was published by Physical Review B in 2006 is corrected.
We characterize zero-temperature dipolar Bose gases under external spherical confinement as a function of the dipole strength using the essentially exact many-body diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) technique. We show that the DMC energies are reproduced accurately within a mean-field framework if the variation of the s-wave scattering length with the dipole strength is accounted for properly. Our calculations suggest stability diagrams and collapse mechanisms of dipolar Bose gases that differ significantly from those previously proposed in the literature.
We present an analytical approximation for nonlinear dynamics of trapped Bose-co ndensed gases. The new approximation is a substantial improvement over the Thomas-Fermi approximation and is shown to be applicable for systems with a rather small number of atoms $N$. The calculated aspect ratios after ballistic expansion are found to be in good agreement with those observed in recent experiments.
From the many-body T-matrix the condition for a medium-dependent bound state and its binding energy is derived for a homogeneous interacting Bose gas. This condition provides the critical line in the phase diagram in terms of the medium-dependent scattering length. Separating the Bose pole from the distribution function the influence of a Bose condensate is discussed and a thermal minimum of the critical scattering length is found.
We present the general dielectric formalism for Bose-Einstein condensed systems in external potential at finite temperatures. On the basis of a model arising within this framework as a first approximation in an intermediate temperature region for large condensate we calculate the damping of low-energy excitations in the collisionless regime.
We discuss stability and phase coherence of 1D trapped Bose gases and find that inelastic decay processes, such as 3-body recombination, are suppressed in the strongly interacting (Tonks-Girardeau) and intermediate regimes. This is promising for achieving these regimes with a large number of particles. "Fermionization" of the system reduces the phase coherence length, and at T=0 the gas is fully phase coherent only deeply in the weakly interacting (Gross-Pitaevskii) regime.
The ability to support metastable current-carrying states in multiply-connected settings is one of the prime signatures of superfluidity. Such states are investigated theoretically for the case of trapped Bose condensed alkali gases, particularly with regard to the rate at which they decay via thermal fluctuations. The lifetimes of metastable currents can be either longer or shorter than experimental time-scales. A scheme for the experimental detection of metastable states is sketched.
The ideal uniform two-dimensional (2D) Fermi and Bose gases are considered both in the thermodynamic limit and the finite case. We derive May's Theorem, viz. the correspondence between the internal energies of the Fermi and Bose gases in the thermodynamic limit. This results in both gases having the same heat capacity. However, as we shall show, the thermodynamic limit is never truly reached in two dimensions and so it is essential to consider finite-size effects. One-dimensional Bose gases are considered, interacting either through the hard-core potentials or through the contact delta potentials. Interest in these gases gained momentum because of the recent experimental realization of quasi-one-dimensional Bose gases in traps with tightly confined radial motion, achieving the Tonks-Girardeau (TG) regime of strongly interacting atoms. For such gases the Fermi-Bose mapping of wavefunctions is applicable. In this paper we show that for a non-ideal Bose gas there exists an upper limit on the transition temperature above which Bose-Einstein condensation cannot occur regardless of the pressure applied. Such upper limits for some realistic Bose gases are estimated. This result implies that there may also exist an upper limit on the transition temperature of superconductors.
We investigate the fluctuations of the condensate in the ideal and weakly interacting Bose gases confined in a box of volume V within canonical ensemble. Canonical ensemble is developed to describe the behavior of the fluctuations when different methods of approximation to the weakly interacting Bose gases are used. Research shows that the fluctuations of the condensate exhibit anomalous behavior for the interacting Bose gas confined in a box.
Bose-condensed gases are considered with an effective interaction strength varying in the whole range of the values between zero and infinity. The consideration is based on the usage of a representative statistical ensemble for Bose systems with broken global gauge symmetry. Practical calculations are illustrated for a uniform Bose gas at zero temperature, employing a self-consistent mean-field theory, which is both conserving and gapless.
A survey is given of the present state of the art in studying Bose-Einstein condensation of dilute atomic gases. The bulk of attention is focused on the principal theoretical problems, though the related experiments are also mentioned. Both uniform and nonuniform trapped gases are considered. Existing theoretical contradictions are critically analysed. A correct understanding of the principal theoretical problems is necessary for gaining a more penetrating insight into experiments with trapped atoms and for their proper interpretation.
Studies of trapped quantum gases of bosons and of fermions have opened up a new range of many-body problems, having a strong overlap with nuclear and neutron star physics. Topics discussed here include: the Bose yrast problem -- how many-particle Bose systems carry extreme amounts of angular momentum; the infrared divergent structure of the transition to Bose condensation in a weakly interacting system; and the physics of extremely strongly interacting Bose and Fermi systems, in the scale-free regime where the two body s-wave scattering lengths are large compared with the interparticle spacing…
One-dimensional Bose and Fermi gases with contact interactions are known to exhibit the weak-strong duality, where the equilibrium thermodynamic properties of one system at weak coupling are identical to those of the other system at strong coupling. Here, we show that such duality extends beyond the thermodynamics to the frequency-dependent complex bulk viscosity, which is provided by the contact-contact response function. We have produced a macroscopic quantum system in which a Li-6 Fermi sea coexists with a large and stable Na-23 Bose-Einstein condensate. This was accomplished using inter-species sympathetic cooling of fermionic Li-6 in a thermal bath of bosonic Na-23.
The two-fluid and Landau criteria for superfluidity are compared for trapped Bose gases. While the two-fluid criterion predicts translational superfluidity, it is suggested, on the basis of the homogeneous Gross-Pitaevski limit, that a necessary part of Landau's criterion, adequate for non-translationally invariant systems, d oes not hold for trapped Bose gases in the GP limit. A dilute Bose system with Bose-Einstein condensate is considered. It is shown that the Hartree-Fock-Bogolubov approximation can be made both conserving as well as gapless. This is achieved by taking into account all physical normalization conditions, that is, the normalization condition for the condensed particles and that for the total number of particles. Two Lagrange multipliers, introduced for preserving these normalization conditions, make the consideration completely self-consistent.
We investigate the elementary excitations of charge and spin degrees for the 1D interacting two-component Bose and Fermi gases by means of the discrete Bethe ansatz equations. Analytic results in the limiting cases of strong and weak interactions are derived, where the Bosons are treated in the repulsive and the fermions in the strongly attractive regime. We confirm and complement results obtained previously from the Bethe ansatz equations in the thermodynamic limit.
We present a new method of obtaining nonlinear integral equations characterizing the thermodynamics of one-dimensional multi-component gases interacting via a delta-function potential. In the case of the repulsive two-component Bose gas we obtain a simple system of two NLIE allowing for an efficient numerical implementation in contrast with the infinite number of coupled equations obtained by employing the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz. This is a less technical presentation of the ideas in quant-ph/9804035 [Phys Rev Lett 83 (1999), 1707-1710]. A second order phase transition induced by a rapid quench can lock out topological defects with densities far exceeding their equilibrium expectation values. This phenomenon is a generic prediction of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, and can appear in a wide range of physical systems. The problem of particle fluctuations in arbitrary nonuniform systems with Bose-Einstein condensate is considered. This includes the case of trapped Bose atoms. It is shown that the correct description of particle fluctuations for any nonuniform system of interacting atoms always results in thermodynamically normal fluctuations.
We consider two-dimensional imperfect attractive Fermi and repulsive Bose gases consisting of spinless point particles whose total interparticle interaction energy is represented by $a N^2/2 V$ with $a=-a_{F}\leq 0$ for fermions, and $a=a_{B}\geq 0$ for bosons. We show that in spite of the attraction the thermodynamics of $d=2$ imperfect Fermi gas remains well defined for $0 \leq a_{F}\leq a_{0}=h^2/2πm$, and is exactly the same as the one of the repulsive imperfect Bose gas with $a_{B}=a_{0}-a_{F}$. Using a specially tuned mean-field Bose gas as a reference system, we establish a positive lower bound on the condensate density for continuous Bose systems with superstable two-body interactions and a finite gap in the one-particle excitations spectrum, i.e. we prove for the first time standard homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensation for such interacting systems.
We compute the critical temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute three-dimensional homogeneous Bose gases. Our method involves the models of spatial permutations and it should be exact to lowest order in the scattering length of the particle interactions. We find that the change in the critical temperature is proportional to a rho^{1/3} with constant c = -2.33; this contradicts the current consensus among physicists.
We present a rigorous proof of the appearance of quantized vortices in dilute trapped Bose gases with repulsive two-body interactions subject to rotation, which was obtained recently in joint work with Elliott Lieb. Starting from the many-body Schroedinger equation, we show that the ground state of such gases is, in a suitable limit, well described by the nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation. In the case of axially symmetric traps, our results show that the appearance of quantized vortices causes spontaneous symmetry breaking in the ground state.
We investigate the effects of dimensional reduction in Bose gases induced by a strong harmonic confinement in the transverse cylindric radial direction. By using a generalized Lieb-Liniger theory, based on a variational treatment of the transverse width of the Bose gas, we analyze the transition from a 3D Bose-Einstein condensate to the 1D Tonks-Girardeau gas. The sound velocity and the frequency of the lowest compressional mode give a clear signature of the regime involved. We explore the far-from-equilibrium dynamics of Bose gases in a universal regime associated to nonthermal fixed points. While previous investigations concentrated on scaling functions and exponents describing equal-time correlations, we compute the additional scaling functions and dynamic exponent $z$ characterizing the frequency dependence or dispersion from unequal-time correlations. This allows us to compare the characteristic condensation and correlation times from a finite-size scaling analysis depending on the system's volume.
Baym, Blaizot, and Zinn-Justin have recently used the large N approximation to calculate the effect of interactions on the transition temperature of dilute Bose gases. We extend their calculation to next-to-leading-order in 1/N and find a relatively small correction of -26% to the leading-order result. This suggests that the large N approximation works surprisingly well in this application.
We prove that the Gross-Pitaevskii equation correctly describes the ground state energy and corresponding one-particle density matrix of rotating, dilute, trapped Bose gases with repulsive two-body interactions. We also show that there is 100% Bose-Einstein condensation. While a proof that the GP equation correctly describes non-rotating or slowly rotating gases was known for some time, the rapidly rotating case was unclear because the Bose (i.e., symmetric) ground state is not the lowest eigenstate of the Hamiltonian in this case. The pole of the two-particle T-matrix including the influence of the surrounding medium is analyzed for an interacting Bose gas. The phase diagram of the Bose -Einstein condensation (BEC) depending on the temperature, density, scattering length, and momentum is derived from this pole. The critical momentum for the occurrence of superfluidity is obtained in this way. As a new observation a two- particle binding energy is reported intimately connected with the occurrence of the BEC. It is suggested that this might have cosmological consequences on the dark energy problem.
