We investigate the enhanced microwave transmission through the array of metallic coaxial annular apertures (MCAAs) experimentally and theoretically. The even-mode and the odd-mode surface resonances are clarified from the spatial field distributions and the dispersion diagram. The impact of local resonance is thoroughly embodied in the even-mode surface resonant states, while the odd-mode surface resonances are scaled by periodicity, invariant to different local geometry of the unit cell, and invisible in measurements. The enhanced transmission is the collective selections on the interplay between the local resonances and the evanescent Bloch wave channels on the surface. Transmission measurements for different inner diameter of the apertures show that the transmissivity extrema with respect to the specific angles precisely correspond to the degenerate points in the dispersion diagram of surface resonances.
On Electrical Equivalence of Aperture-Body and Transmission-Cavity Resonance Phenomena in Subwavelength Conducting Aperture Systems from an Equivalent Circuit Point of View
Evolution of dissipative-soliton-resonance (DSR) pulses in an all-normal-dispersion fiber laser with pump power under various operation conditions are experimentally studied. The fiber laser is mode-locked by using a nonlinear fiber loop mirror. Apart from the typical pulse broadening due to the peak power clamping effect, pulse breaking was observed. In addition, pulse narrowing with pump power increasing was observed. All the incompatible evolution of DSR pulses could be attributed to the multiple parameters change due to pump power increasing under specific operation conditions.
The Lorentz-Maxwell model of dispersion of light has been analyzed in this paper to determine the true resonance frequency in the ultraviolet for the electrons in optically transparent glasses and the damping coefficient at this frequency. For this we needed the refractive indices of glass in the optical frequency range. We argue that the true resonance condition in the absorption region prevails when the frequency at which the absorption coefficient is maximum is the same as the frequency at which the average energy per cycle of the electrons is also a maximum. We have simultaneously solved t…
A linear scattering problem for which incoming and outgoing waves are restricted to a finite number of radiation channels can be precisely described by a frequency-dependent scattering matrix. The entries of the scattering matrix, as functions of the frequency, give rise to the transmission and reflection spectra. To find the scattering matrix rigorously, it is necessary to solve numerically the partial differential equations governing the relevant waves. In this paper, we consider resonant structures with an isolated nondegenerate resonant mode of complex frequency $ω_\star$, and show that fo…

Analysis of chromatic dispersion compensation and carrier phase recovery in long-haul optical transmission system influenced by equalization enhanced phase noise
Determined polarization state of light is required in nonlinear optics applications related to ultrashort and single-cycle light pulse generation. Such short time scales require up to full octave of spectral width of light. Fiber-based, pulse-preserving and linearly polarized supercontinuum can meet these requirements. We report on the development - from linear simulations of the fiber structure, through fabrication of physical fibers to their versatile characterization - of polarization maintaining, highly nonlinear photonic crystal fibers, intended for femtosecond pumping at a wavelength of …
Constraints on transmission, dispersion, and density of states in dielectric multilayers and stepwise potential barriers with arbitrary layer arrangement
Transmission eigenfunctions are certain interior resonant modes that are of central importance to the wave scattering theory. In this paper, we present the discovery of novel global rigidity properties of the transmission eigenfunctions associated with the Maxwell system. It is shown that the transmission eigenfunctions carry the geometrical and topological information of the underlying domain. We present both analytical and numerical results of these intriguing rigidity properties. As an interesting application, we propose an illusion scheme of artificially generating a mirage image of any gi…
In this work, we present an in-depth experimental and numerical study of the short-range THz communications links that use subwavelength dielectric fibers for information transmission and define main challenges and tradeoffs in the link implementation. Particularly, we use air or foam-cladded polypropylene-core subwavelength dielectric THz fibers of various diameters (0.57-1.75 mm) to study link performance as a function of the link length of up to ~10 m, and data bitrates of up to 6 Gbps at the carrier frequency of 128 GHz (2.34 mm wavelength). We find that depending on the fiber diameter, th…
We proposed a spectroscopic method that extends Ramsey's atomic spectroscopy to detect the transition frequency of a qubit fabricated on a superconducting circuit. The method uses a multi-interval train of qubit biases to implement an alternate resonant and dispersive couplings to an incident probe field. The consequent absorption spectrum of the qubit has a narrower linewidth at its transition frequency than that obtained from constantly biasing the qubit to resonance while the middle dispersive evolution incurs only a negligible shift in detected frequency. Modeling on transmon qubits, we fi…
