LHCb is the dedicated B physics experiment at the LHC and is due to start data taking later this year. Its goal is to search for new physics in very rare processes and make precision measurements of CP violation in B decays. The CKM angle gamma plays an important role in flavour physics in the Standard Model. LHCb will exploit the large variety of B hadrons produced by the 14 TeV pp collisions, performing gamma measurements to the precision of a few degrees. Here, we will present a summary of the expected gamma sensitivities LHCb will reach during its first years of data taking, with contributions from several strategies in both tree and loop processes.
The LHCb experiment at LHC is a single-arm spectrometer designed to pursue an extensive study of B physics and CP violation. In this contribution the physics which will be performed by LHCb is reviewed.
We discuss the current status and the physics prospects at the LHCb detector, the dedicated B physics detector at the LHC, due to start data taking in 2007.
LHCb is already providing leading measurements of time-dependent CP asymmetries with 1 fb$^{-1}$ of data. With the LHCb detector, and further one with the LHCb upgrade, very high-precision time-dependent CP measurements are expected to stringently test the CKM paradigm and to the search for possible small NP effects. A review of the current precision and the prospects for these time-dependent quantities with the LHCb and LHCb upgraded detectors are summarised in this paper.
High-precision measurements performed by the LHCb collaboration have opened a new era in charm physics. Several crucial measurements, particularly in spectroscopy, rare decays and CP violation, can benefit from the increased statistical power of an upgraded LHCb detector. The upgrade of LHCb detector, its software infrastructure, and the impact on charm physics are discussed in detail.
Precision measurements in charm physics offer a window into a unique sector of potential New Physics interactions. LHCb is poised to become a world leading experiment for charm physics, recording enormous samples with a detector tailored for flavor physics. This article presents recent charm production, CPV, and mixing studies from LHCb, including LHCb's first charm CP asymmetry measurement with 37 pb^-1 of data collected in 2010.
The status and prospects of time-integrated measurements of the CKM angle gamma at LHCb, the LHC's dedicated flavor physics experiment, are reviewed. Yields obtained from early data taking are presented and extrapolations are made to estimate what can be expected to be obtained from the 2011 data. The conclusions drawn from these extrapolations are that LHCb will produce the world's best measurement of gamma by the end of 2011 and that the long-term outlook is excellent.

The LHCb experiment is running at the Large Hadron Collider to study CP violation and rare decays in the beauty and charm sectors. The motivation and the strategy of the upgrade envisaged for the long shutdown LS2 (2018) is presented. The current results for some exemplary physics analyses are given and the expected performances foreseen for 2018 and for the LHCb Upgrade project with an integrated luminosity of 50 fb$^{-1}$ are summarized.
As first Run II data acquisition has begun, it is useful to expose the pending questions by reviewing some of the most recent results obtained with Run I data analyses. Early results of the current data taking and middle-term prospects are also shown to illustrate the efficiency of the acquisition and analysis chain.
LHCb is the heavy flavour precision experiment of the proton-proton Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. It will search for new physics in CP violation and rare decays and is ready for the start-up of the LHC. An overview of its physics program will be given, illustrated by few key examples: measurements of the CKM angle $γ$, of the CP violating phase in $ B_s \overline{B_s}$ oscillations and searches for new physics in $B^0_d \to K^*μ^+μ^-$ and in $B^0_s \to μ^+μ^-$.
Precision measurements in charm physics offer a window into a unique sector of potential New Physics interactions. LHCb is poised to become a world leading experiment for charm studies, recording enormous statistics with a detector tailored for flavor physics. This article presents recent charm CPV and mixing studies from LHCb, including LHCb's first CP asymmetry measurement with 37 inverse pb of data collected in 2010. The difference of the CP asymmetries of D0 decays to the K-K+ and π-π+ final states is determined to be ΔA_{CP} = (-0.28 +/- 0.70 +/- 0.25)%. Significant updates to the materia…
Despite not being designed for it, the LHCb experiment has given world-leading contributions in kaon and hyperon physics. In this contribution I review the prospects for kaon physics at LHCb exploiting the already acquired data and the current and future Upgrade scenarios.
{Since the start of the Large Hadron Collider program, direct searches for Beyond Standard Model (BSM) particles have constrained their mass scale to limits which are now above the energy reach of the current collider. As a result, studies of indirect probes of BSM physics have gained a considerable momentum, both experimentally and theoretically. The flavour anomalies in $b$ hadron decays are now recognized as an important laboratory for the indirect detection of BSM physics. This short review presents several key analyses in this area, and some prospects with future data.
We review the first measurements of the CKM angle gamma from LHCb. These measurements have been performed with b-hadron decays dominated by b -> u and b -> c tree-level amplitudes, from which gamma can be determined without theoretical uncertainties. Precision is achieved by averaging results from B- -> Dh- (h= K,pi) decays with D -> h+h-, D -> K+pi-, and D -> K+pi-pi+pi-, and D -> K_S^0h+h-. Prospects for these and future measurements of gamma using neutral b-hadron decays are briefly discussed.
One of the most promising ways to determine the angle gamma of the CKM unitarity triangle is through measurement of the tree level processes B to DK. The LHCb collaboration has studied the potential of these decays employing the Atwood-Dunietz-Soni (ADS) and Dalitz methods, making use of a large sample of simulated data. For each method the expected sensitivities to the angle gamma are presented in this report.
The b->s gamma transition proceeds through flavour changing neutral currents, and thus is particularly sensitive to the effects of new physics. An overview of the method to measure the photon polarisation at the LHCb experiment via an angular analysis of B->K*e+e- at low q^2 is presented. The status of the B->K*mu+mu- analysis with 309 pb-1 of pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV at LHCb is also given.
We review the prospects of measurements of the CKM matrix elements corresponding to the first two generations of quarks, as well as measurements of leptonic and semileptonic charm meson decays at LHCb. We review the status of searches for Lepton Non-Universality in the charm sector, and provide motivation to continue such searches.
An overview of plans for the measurement of gamma at the LHCb experiment will be shown. The gamma angle is the least accurately known parameter of the CKM unitary triangle. The LHCb experiment at the CERN LHC aims to perform precision heavy flavour and CP violation measurements, including improving the knowledge of gamma. Focus will be put on methods using B meson decays at the tree level, within the Standard Model framework. The early data recorded by the experiment, from pp collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV, allowed observations of the first signals of the B decay modes that will be used to perf…
Precision measurements in charm physics offer a window into a unique sector of potential New Physics interactions. LHCb is well equipped to take advantage of the enormous production cross-section of charm mesons in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV. The measurement of the $D^0 -\bar{D}^0$ mixing parameters and the search for CP-violation in the charm sector are key physics goals of the LHCb programme. The first CP violation measurements in the charm sector, with 37 pb$^{-1}$ of data collected in 2010, are discussed. The study of $D^+ \rightarrow K^- K^+ π^+$ decays shows no indication of CP …
This report details the capabilities of LHCb and its upgrades towards the study of kaons and hyperons. The analyses performed so far are reviewed, elaborating on the prospects for some key decay channels, while proposing some new measurements in LHCb to expand its strangeness research program.
The Standard Model predicts a branching ratio for the decay mode Bs -> mu mu of (3.4 +/- 0.5)10e-9, while some SUSY models predict enhancements up to 2 orders of magnitude. It is expected that at the end of its life Tevatron will set and exclusion limit for this branching ratio of the order of 10e-8, leaving one order of magnitude to explore. The excellent vertex reconstruction, invariant mass resolution and muon identification of the LHCb detector make it well suited to observe a branching ratio in this range in the first years of running of LHC. In this article an overview of the analysis th…
LHCb is the experiment at the Large Hadron Collider devoted to studies of new phenomena in CP violation and in rare decays. This review summarizes the status of the experiment in the imminence of the data taking, the prospects for the first measurements and highlights of its full physics program.
The LHCb collaboration has studied various promising ways to determine the Unitarity Triangle angle $γ$. Three complementary methods will be considered. The potential of the $B \to DK^{(*)}$ decays has been studied by employing the combined Gronau-London-Wyler (GLW) and the Atwood-Dunietz-Soni (ADS) methods, making use of a large sample of simulated data. $γ$ can also be extracted with a time-dependent analysis of $B_s \to D_s K$ decays, provided that the $B_s$ mixing phase is measured independently. In addition, the combined measurement of the $B^0 \to π^+ π^-$ and $B^0_s \to K^+K^-$ time-dep…
A model that can simultaneously explain Dark Matter relic density and the apparent matter anti-matter imbalance of the universe has been recently proposed. The model requires $b$-hadron branching fractions to Dark Matter at the per mille level. The $b$-hadrons decay to a dark sector baryon, $ψ_{\rm{DS}}$, which has a mass in the region $940$ MeV/c$^{2} \leq m(ψ_{\rm{DS}}) \leq 4430$ MeV/c$^{2}$. In this paper, we discuss the sensitivity of the LHCb experiment to search for this dark baryon, covering different types of topology and giving prospects for Runs 3 and 4 of the LHC, as well as for th…
Of the three angles that make up the CKM matrix, the least well known is gamma. A precision measurement of this quantity is highly desirable as it forms one of the arbitrary parameters in the Standard Model. Moreover, this is the one angle of the CKM triangle that can be determined in channels that occur via tree-level decays. While loop-level processes could have sensitivity to physics beyond the standard model, tree level processes are expected to be unaltered. Hence a measurement of gamma in tree level processes leads to a standard model benchmark measurement against which other loop-driven…
LHCb is a dedicated detector for b and c physics at the LHC. I will present a concise review of the detector design and expected performance together with some first results on the commissioning of the different sub-systems based on cosmic data and particle beams delivered by the LHC during the summer of 2008. The experiment is ready to exploit first data expected from the LHC. An integrated luminosity of ~0.3fb-1, which should be collected during the first year of physics running, will already allow LHCb to perform a number of very significant mesurements with the potential of revealing New P…
The production of c c_bar and b b_bar is studied in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the LHCb detector. The results of these measurements are compared with different theoretical models. Results and prospects are also shown for exotics: the mass measurement of the X(3872) and the search of the X(4140). Most of the presented results are based on the 2010 LHCb dataset (35 pb-1).
A search for $Σ^+ \to p μ^+ μ^-$ decays with LHCb Run 1 data is presented, yielding an evidence for this decay and a measurement of a branching fraction compatible with the Standard Model. The HyperCP anomaly in the dimuon invariant mass distribution is not confirmed, and its branching fraction central value is excluded at 95\% CL. Prospects for the future of this measurement in LHCb are also presented.
We present studies from the LHCb experiment of decays of the type H_b to H_c X, where H_b represents a beauty hadron (B+, B0 or Lambda_b) and H_c a charmed hadron (D0, D(*)+, Ds or Lambda_c). Such decays are important for the determination of the CKM angle gamma, a key goal of the LHCb physics programme. We exploit the data accumulated in 2010, and in the early months of the 2011 run. We report on the observation of new decay modes, and first measurements on the road to a precise determination of gamma.
This article is a short and non-exhaustive summary of the prospects to find New Physics with LHCb as was presented at the HCP conference at Toronto on August 26th 2010.
A range of flavour physics observables show tensions with their corresponding Standard Model expectations: measurements of leptonic flavour-changing neutral current processes and ratios of semi-leptonic branching fractions involving different generations of leptons show deviations of the order of four standard deviations. If confirmed, either would be an intriguing sign of new physics. In this manuscript, we analyse the current experimental situation of such processes and for the first time estimate the combined impact of the future datasets of the Belle II and LHCb experiments on the present …
We present the prospects of an angular analysis of the $Λ_b \to Λ(1520)\ell^+\ell^-$ decay. Using the expected yield in the current dataset collected at the LHCb experiment, as well as the foreseen ones after the LHCb upgrades, sensitivity studies are presented to determine the experimental precision on angular observables related to the lepton distribution and their potential to identify New Physics. The forward-backward lepton asymmetry at low dilepton invariant mass is particularly promising. NP scenarios favoured by the current anomalies in $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ decays can be distinguished …
The startup of the LHC opens many new frontiers in precision flavour physics, in particular expanding the field of precision time-dependent CP violation measurements to the $B^0_s$ system. This contribution reviews the status of time-dependent measurements of the CKM angle $γ$ at the LHC's dedicated flavour physics experiment, LHCb. Particular attention is given to the measurement of $γ$ from the decay mode \DsK, a theoretically clean and precise method which is unique to LHCb. The performance of the LHCb detector for this and related modes is reviewed in light of early data taking and found t…
\lhcb is one of the four major experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (\lhc) at CERN. It is custom built to look for CP violation and New Physics in rare decays of heavy flavour hadrons, like the B and D systems. Rare decays that occur via loop diagrams provide a way to probe New Physics at energy scales much higher than can be probed by direct production in experiments. In this article, the \lhcb prospects for such measurements with exclusive decays of the type $B \to \Xs γ$ and $B \to X_{s} l^{+} l^{-}$ are presented.
The Large Hadron Collider will be a unique place to find new physics in the next decade. A huge production of b and c quarks will allow a rich programme of Heavy Flavour Physics to be carried out either by the multipurpose experiments ATLAS and CMS or by LHCb, the experiment designed for such physics. An overview of the LHC machine and experiments' performances will be given with the first 2010 data. The start-up is very bright and some first LHC heavy flavour results will be presented. The b physics program at LHC will be illustrated with three examples: the searches for rare decays such as B…
An overview of current experimental bounds on $CPT$ violation in neutral meson mixing is given. New values for the $CPT$ asymmetry in the $B^0$ and $B_s^0$ systems are deduced from published BaBar, Belle and LHCb results. With dedicated analyses, LHCb will be able to further improve the bounds on $CPT$ violation in the $D^0$, $B^0$ and $B_s^0$ systems. Since $CPT$ violation implies violation of Lorentz invariance in an interacting local quantum field theory, the observed $CPT$ asymmetry will exhibit sidereal- and boost-dependent variations. Such $CPT$-violating and Lorentz-violating effects ar…
LHCb has started its charm physics programme using the data taken at the LHC. The first measurements of open charm production cross-sections for proton proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7 \tev$ are presented. The cross-sections of the \PDzero, $\PDstar^+$, \PDplus, and \PDsplus mesons are found to be in broad agreement with theory predictions. The prospects for measurements of charm mixing, CP and T violation in decays of neutral \PD mesons at LHCb are discussed. Furthermore, plans for CP violation measurements using charged \PD mesons are presented. Most analyses are expected to yield results im…
In this report, experimental prospects for the inclusive analysis of the radiative B decays and electroweak penguin decays at the super B factories are presented.
The determination of the mixing induced CP-violating asymmetry in decays such as $B^0_s \to J/ψϕ$ is one of the key goals of the LHCb experiment. Its value is predicted to be very small in the Standard Model but can be significantly enhanced in many models of New Physics. The steps towards a precise determination of this phase with a flavour-tagged, time-dependent, angular analysis of the decay $B^0_s \to J/ψϕ$ will be presented, and first results shown from this measurement programme, using data collected in 2010 and the early months of the 2011 run. Results will also be shown, and prospects …
The prospects for measuring the angle gamma with present day B factories are examined. A number of approaches are discussed with reference to recent preliminary measurements based on a data sample of approximately 88 million \BB pairs collected by the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC.

The LHCb experiment has opened the possibility to test mixing and $C\!P$ violation in the charm sector with unprecedented precision thanks to the huge number of charm hadron decays collected, $\mathcal{O}(10^8)$. The first observation of $C\!P$ violation in the decay of charm quarks in March 2019 has been a fundamental achievement. The latest LHCb measurements in the complementary sectors of mixing and time-dependent $C\!P$ violation are illustrated in these proceedings. In particular, a new measurement of the $C\!P$ violation parameter $A_Γ$ with 2015--2016 data that was presented for the fir…
The time-dependent CP-violating observables accessible through Bs->DsK decays have been measured for the first time using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1 inverse fb collected in 2011 by the LHCb detector. Using these observables, the CKM angle gamma is determined to be (115 -43 +28) modulo 180 degrees at 68% CL, where the uncertainty contains both statistical and systematic components.
We report results from the first measurements of the CKM angle $γ$ using $B\rightarrow DK$ decays with the LHCb experiment. Three well established methods are used to extract the CP observables. The updated measurement of $γ$ in the three-body $D^0$ Dalitz space results in $γ= (57\pm 16)^\circ$. When combining the observables from all \bdk studies, the best fit value for $γ\in [0,180]^\circ$ is $γ= 67.2^\circ$ with $γ\in [55.1,79.1]^\circ$ at 68%CL and $γ\in [43.9, 89.5]^\circ$ at 95%CL. This represents the most precise $γ$ values directly measured by a single experiment. Furthermore, a new ti…
LHCb is a dedicated detector for $b$ and $c$ physics at the LHC. I will present a concise review of the detector design and performance together with a selection of early physics results and prospects. The integrated luminosity of $37 \rm{pb}^{-1}$ collected in 2010 has already allowed LHCb to perform a number of a very significant measurements, while the data expected for 2011 have the potential of revealing New Physics effects in the $B_s $ sector.
Heavy flavor production is important in heavy ion collisions to study both cold and hot nuclear matter effects. The LHCb experiment can make unique contribution to heavy ion physics, owing to the full particle identification of the detector in the forward region and the ability to collect fixed target data with proton or lead beams. This report describes recent results with proton-lead collision data collected in 2013 and the prospect of heavy-ion studies at LHCb.
Measurements of the $W$ boson mass are planned by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, but for the time being, these may be unable to compete with the current world average precision of 15~MeV, due to uncertainties in the PDFs. We discuss the potential of a measurement by the LHCb experiment based on the charged lepton transverse momentum $p_T^{\ell}$ spectrum in $W \to μν$ decays. The unique forward acceptance of LHCb means that the PDF uncertainties would be anti-correlated with those of $p_T^{\ell}$ based measurements by ATLAS and CMS. We compute an average of ATLAS, CMS and LHCb measurements of …
An overview of the recent first observation of CP violation in the Charm sector by the LHCb collaboration. Selection of theoretical models explaining this measurement is reviewed. Finally, experimental prospects for future measurements are discussed.
I present a measurement of the CKM angle gamma from a combination of three LHCb measurements using the tree decays B -> DK and B -> Dpi. These measurements are based on a dataset corresponding to 1.0fb-1, collected in 2011. In contrast to what was presented at FPCP, these proceedings fully include the effect of D0--D0b mixing on the combination. I also report on the inclusion of new, preliminary results on the Dalitz analysis of B->DK, D->KShh, using a dataset corresponding to 3fb-1, collected in 2011--2012.

I discuss the first semileptonic $B_s$ decay measurements performed at LHCb, and the prospects for precise studies of $B_s$ semileptonic decay properties. The analyses covered here are based on data collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. In particular the semileptonic decays $\Bs\to D_s^+ X \munu$ and $\Bs\to D^0K^+ X \munu$ are studied. Two structures are observed in the $D^0K^+$ mass spectrum at masses consistent with the known $D_{s1}(2536)^+$ and $D^*_{s2}(2573)^{+}$ mesons. The measured branching fractions relative to the total $\…
The B^0_s -> J/psi K_S decay has recently been observed by the CDF collaboration and will be of interest for the LHCb experiment. It is the U-spin partner of the golden B^0_d -> J/psi K_S channel and offers a determination of the angle gamma of the unitarity triangle. Moreover, it allows us to control the hadronic penguin effects in the extraction of the B^0_d-\bar B^0_d mixing phase phi_d through a measurement of CP violation in B^0_d^0 -> J/psi K_S. We discuss the picture emerging for these measurements from an LHCb feasibility study. While LHCb will be able to extract gamma from the CP viol…
Measurement of the CKM phase gamma in B->DK decays can be potentially performed with high precision due to low theoretical uncertainties. However, the precision measurement requires very large experimental samples of B decays. This report covers prospects for gamma measurement at the future e+e- facilities and upgraded LHCb detector.
An evolved real-time data processing strategy is proposed for high-energy physics experiments, and its implementation at the LHCb experiment is presented. The reduced event model allows not only the signal candidate firing the trigger to be persisted, as previously available, but also an arbitrary set of other reconstructed or raw objects from the event. This allows for higher trigger rates for a given output data bandwidth, when compared to the traditional model of saving the full raw detector data for each trigger, whilst accommodating inclusive triggers and preserving data mining capabiliti…
The LHCb experiment will operate for about five years at a luminosity of 2x10^32 cm^-2 s^-1 and plans are to accumulate a data sample of ~10 fb^-1. Here we present the physics programme and detector design for a future high luminosity phase of the LHCb experiment. An upgraded LHCb experiment would operate at ten times the design luminosity, i.e. at ~2x10^33 cm^-2 s^-1 and aims to collect a data sample of ~100 fb^-1 over five years. This programme would allow the probe of new physics at an unprecedented level. Key measurements include the B^0_s mixing phase phi_s in B^0_s -> J/ψphi and B^0_s ->…
The ATLAS, CMS and LHCb experiments will perform extensive searches for physics Beyond the Standard Model (BSM). The investigation of decays of beauty hadrons represents an alternative and complementary approach to the direct BSM searches. A particularly promising observable for the search of New Physics (NP) in $B-$hadron decays, is the measurement of the branching ratio of the decay $B_S\to μ^{+} μ^{-}$. This observable is sensitive to physics BSM with new scalar or pseudoscalar effective operators, such as theories involving an extended Higgs sector. Here the prospects of the ATLAS, CMS and…
The LHCb experiment, bolstered up by the 10^12 b-hadrons to be produced yearly in its interaction region, is an excellent place to study rare B decays. Flavor-changing neutral currents are forbidden at tree level in the Standard Model. They proceed through loop diagrams and hence are indirectly sensitive to New Physics through the effect of new particles on observable quantities. In this paper, we present preparation studies of the three most promising B rare decay analyzes. These aim at the observation of the photon polarization in B_s to phi gamma, the measurement of the angular distribution…
Observation in astronomy suggests that our Universe contains an abundance of matter over antimatter, which can only be explained if the combined CP symmetry is violated. Studies of CP violation have driven the flavor physics with the aim of testing the Standard Model of particle physics and searching for physics beyond. CP violation is discovered in strange, beauty and charm meson systems, however no conclusive sign of CP violation in baryon decays has been observed yet. This review summarizes CP violation studies performed by the LHCb experiment in charmless decays and rare decays of beauty b…
