In this paper, linear first order expansion of deceleration parameter $q(z)=q_0+q_1(1-a)$ ($M_1$), constant jerk $j=j_0$ ($M_2$) and third order expansion of luminosity distance ($M_3$) are confronted with cosmic observations: SCP 307 SN Ia, BAO and observational Hubble data (OHD). Likelihood is implemented to find the best fit model parameters. All these models give the same prediction of the evolution of the universe which is undergoing accelerated expansion currently and experiences a transition from decelerated expansion to accelerated expansion. But, the transition redshift depends on the concrete parameterized form of the model assumed. $M_1$ and $M_2$ give value of transition redshift about $z_t\sim 0.6$. $M_3$ gives a larger one, say $z_t\sim 1$. The $χ^2/dof$ implies almost the same goodness of the models. But, for its badness of evolution of deceleration parameter at high redshift $z>1$, $M_3$ can not be reliable. $M_1$ and $M_2$ are compatible with $Λ$CDM model at the $2σ$ and $1σ$ confidence levels respectively. $M_3$ is not compatible with $Λ$CDM model at $2σ$ confidence level. From $M_1$ and $M_2$ models, one can conclude that the cosmic data favor a cosmological model having $j_0<-1$.
We apply a tension metric $Q_\textrm{UDM}$, the update difference in mean parameters, to understand the source of the difference in the measured Hubble constant $H_0$ inferred with cosmic microwave background lensing measurements from the Planck satellite ($H_0=67.9^{+1.1}_{-1.3}\, \mathrm{km/s/Mpc}$) and from the South Pole Telescope ($H_0=72.0^{+2.1}_{-2.5}\, \mathrm{km/s/Mpc}$) when both are combined with baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements with priors on the baryon density (BBN). $Q_\textrm{UDM}$ isolates the relevant parameter directions for tension or concordance where the two…
The Hubble tension and attempts to resolve it by modifying the physics of (or at) recombination motivate finding ways to determine $H_0$ and the sound horizon at the epoch of baryon decoupling $r_{\rm d}$ in ways that neither rely on a recombination model nor on late-time Hubble data. In this work, we investigate what one can learn from the current and future BAO data when treating $r_{\rm d}$ and $H_0$ as independent free parameters. It is well known that BAO gives exquisite constraints on the product $r_{\rm d}H_0$. We show here that imposing a moderate prior on $Ω_{\rm m} h^2$ breaks the de…
The combination of Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) data together with light element abundance measurements from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) has been shown to constrain the cosmological expansion history to an unprecedented degree. Using the newest LUNA data and DR16 data from SDSS, the BAO+BBN probe puts tight constraints on the Hubble parameter ($H_0 = 67.6 \pm 1.0 \mathrm{km/s/Mpc}$), resulting in a $3.7σ$ tension with the local distance ladder determination from SH0ES in a $Λ$CDM model. In the updated BAO data the high- and low-redshift subsets are mutually in excellent agreement, an…
We investigate constraints on the Hubble constant ($H_0$) using Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and baryon density measurements from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). We start by investigating the tension between galaxy BAO measurements and those using the Lyman-$α$ forest, within a Bayesian framework. Using the latest results from eBOSS DR14 we find that the probability of this tension being statistical is $\simeq6.3\%$ assuming flat $Λ$CDM. We measure $H_0 = 67.6\pm1.1$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, with a weak dependence on the BBN prior used, in agreement with results from Planck Cosmic Microwa…
We examine the impact of baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale measurements on the discrepancy between the value of the Hubble constant ($H_0$) inferred from the local distance ladder and from Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. While the BAO data alone cannot constrain $H_0$, we show that combining the latest BAO results with WMAP, Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), or South Pole Telescope (SPT) CMB data produces values of $H_0$ that are $2.4-3.1σ$ lower than the distance ladder, independent of Planck, and that this downward pull was less apparent in some earlier analyses that us…
We perform a measurement of the Hubble constant, $H_0$, using the latest baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) measurements from galaxy surveys of 6dFGS, SDSS DR7 Main Galaxy Sample, BOSS DR12 sample, and eBOSS DR14 quasar sample, in the framework of a flat $Λ$CDM model. Based on the Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence, we examine the consistency of $H_0$ values derived from various data sets. We find that our measurement is consistent with that derived from Planck and with the local measurement of $H_0$ using the Cepheids and type Ia supernovae. We perform forecasts on $H_0$ from future BAO measu…
We investigate the feasibility of extracting Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) from cosmic shear tomography. We particularly focus on the BAO scale precision that can be achieved by future spectroscopy-based, kinematic weak lensing (KWL) surveys \citep[e.g.,][]{Huff13} in comparison to the traditional photometry-based weak lensing surveys. We simulate cosmic shear tomography data of such surveys with a few simple assumptions to focus on the BAO information, extract the spacial power spectrum, and constrain the recovered BAO feature. Due to the small shape noise and the shape of the lensing ke…
An observational tension on estimates of the Hubble parameter, $H_0$, using early and late Universe information, is being of intense discussion in the literature. Additionally, it is of great importance to measure $H_0$ independently of CMB data and local distance ladder method. In this sense, we analyze 15 measurements of the transversal BAO scale, $θ_{\rm BAO}$, obtained in a weakly model-dependent approach, in combination with other data sets obtained in a model-independent way, namely, Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) information, 6 gravitationally lensed quasars with measured time delays by…
We analyse the large-scale correlation function of the 6dF Galaxy Survey (6dFGS) and detect a Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) signal. The 6dFGS BAO detection allows us to constrain the distance-redshift relation at z_{\rm eff} = 0.106. We achieve a distance measure of D_V(z_{\rm eff}) = 456\pm27 Mpc and a measurement of the distance ratio, r_s(z_d)/D_V(z_{\rm eff}) = 0.336\pm0.015 (4.5% precision), where r_s(z_d) is the sound horizon at the drag epoch z_d. The low effective redshift of 6dFGS makes it a competitive and independent alternative to Cepheids and low-z supernovae in constraining t…
Based on the latest MLCS17 SNe Ia data provided by Hicken et al. (2009), together with the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) and strong gravitational lenses (SGL), we investigate the dark energy equation-of-state parameter for both constant $w$ and time-varying $w(z)=w_0+w_az/(1+z)$ in the flat universe, and its correlation with the matter density $Ω_M$ and Hubble constant $h$. The constraints from SNe data alone arrive at: (a) the best-fit results are $(Ω_M, w, h)=(0.358, -1.09, 0.647)$, while both $Ω_M$ and $w$ are very sensitive to the difference $Δh =h-\tilde{h}$ of the Hubble constant dev…
In this work we generalize the idea of a gravitational phase transition or GPT at late times to allow for a modified gravity scenario in the early universe as well. The original GPT was shown to simultaneously relax the $H_0$ and $σ_8$ tensions and {\it Planck} internal inconsistencies. However, the primary results from GPT predictions implied disagreement with the data from the baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO). Here we investigate whether the generalized GPT scenario could address the Hubble tension in the presence of the BAO data as well. We find that, despite the vastly enlarged gravita…
The determination of the Hubble constant has been a central goal in observational astrophysics for nearly 100 years. Extraordinary progress has occurred in recent years on two fronts: the cosmic distance ladder measurements at low redshift and cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements at high redshift. The CMB is used to predict the current expansion rate through a best-fit cosmological model. Complementary progress has been made with baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements at relatively low redshifts. While BAO data do not independently determine a Hubble constant, they are import…

In this work, we explore the cosmological implications of different baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data, including the BAO data extracted by using the spherically averaged one-dimensional galaxy clustering (GC) statistics (hereafter BAO1) and the BAO data obtained by using the anisotropic two-dimensional GC statistics (hereafter BAO2). To make a comparison, we also take into account the case without BAO data (hereafter NO BAO). Firstly, making use of these BAO data, as well as the SNLS3 type Ia supernovae sample and the Planck distance priors data, we give the cosmological constraints of th…
The Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) provide a standard ruler for studying cosmic expansion. The recent observations of BAO in SDSS DR9 and DR11 take measurements of $H(z)$ at several different redshifts. It is argued that the behavior of dark energy could be constrained more effectively by adding high-redshift Hubble parameter data, such as the SDSS DR11 measurement of $H(z) = 222\pm7$ km/sec/Mpc at z = 2.34. In this paper, we investigate the significance of these BAO data in the flat $Λ$CDM model, by combining them with the recent observational data of the Hubble constant from local distan…
In this work we study different types of dark energy (DE) models in the framework of the cosmographic approach, with emphasis on the Running Vacuum models (RVMs). We assess their viability using different information criteria and compare them with the so-called Ghost DE models (GDEs) as well as with the concordance $Λ$CDM model. We use the Hubble diagrams for Pantheon SnIa, quasars (QSOs), gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) as well as the data on baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAOs) in four different combinations. Upon minimizing the $χ^2$ function of the distance modulus in the context of the Markov Ch…
We measure the expansion rate of the recent Universe and the calibration scale of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) from low-redshift data. BAO relies on the calibration scale, i.e., the sound horizon at the end of drag epoch $r_d$, which often imposes a prior of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurement from the Planck satellite. In order to make really independent measurements of $H_0$, we leave $r_d$ completely free and use the BAO data sets combined with the 31 observational $H(z)$ data, GW170817 and Pantheon sample of Type Ia supernovae. In $Λ$CDM model, we get $H_0=68.63^{+1.…

Many attempts to solve the Hubble tension with extended cosmological models combine an enhanced relic radiation density, acting at the level of background cosmology, with new physical ingredients affecting the evolution of cosmological perturbations. Several authors have pointed out the ability of combined Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) data to probe the background cosmological history independently of both CMB maps and supernovae data. Using state-of-the-art assumptions on BBN, we confirm that combined BAO, deuterium, and helium data are in tension with t…
Even though the Hubble constant cannot be significantly determined by the low-redshift Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) data alone, it can be tightly constrained once the high-redshift BAO data are combined. Combining BAO data from 6dFGS, BOSS DR11 clustering of galaxies, WiggleZ and $z=2.34$ from BOSS DR11 quasar Lyman-$α$ forest lines, we get $H_0=68.17^{+1.55}_{-1.56}$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$. In addition, adopting the the simultaneous measurements of $H(z)$ and $D_A(z)$ from the two-dimensional two-point correlation function from BOSS DR9 CMASS sample and two-dimensional matter power spect…
We use the Risaliti & Lusso (2015) compilation of 808 X-ray and UV flux measurements of quasars (QSOs) in the redshift range $0.061 \leq z \leq 6.28$, alone and in conjuction with baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) and Hubble parameter [$H(z)$] measurements, to constrain cosmological parameters in six cosmological models. The QSO data constraints are significantly weaker than, but consistent with, those from the $H(z)$ + BAO data. A joint analysis of the QSO + $H(z)$ + BAO data is consistent with the current standard model, spatially-flat $Λ$CDM, but mildly favors closed spatial hypersurfaces a…
Several interesting Dark Matter (DM) models invoke a dark sector leading to two types of relic particles, possibly interacting with each other: non-relativistic DM, and relativistic Dark Radiation (DR). These models have interesting consequences for cosmological observables, and could in principle solve problems like the small-scale cold DM crisis, Hubble tension, and/or low $σ_8$ value. Their cosmological behaviour is captured by the ETHOS parametrisation, which includes a DR-DM scattering rate scaling like a power-law of the temperature, $T^n$. Scenarios with $n=0$, $2$, or $4$ can easily be…
We present a model-independent determination of the curvature parameter $Ω_k$ by using the Hubble parameter $H(z)$ and angular diameter distance $D_A(z)$ from the recent baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements. Each $H(z)$ and $D_A(z)$ pair from a BAO measurement can constrain a curvature parameter. The accuracy of the curvature measurement improves with increased redshift of $H(z)$ and $D_A(z)$ data. By using the $H(z)$ and $D_A(z)$ pair derived from BAO Lyman $α$ forest measurement at $z=2.36$, the $Ω_k$ is confined to be -0.05$\pm$0.06, which is consistent with the curvature $-0.037^…

In a previous communication we showed that a joint analysis of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data and the current measurement of the local expansion rate favours a model with a scale invariant spectrum (HZ) over the minimal $Λ$CDM scenario provided that the effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom, $N_{eff}$, is taken as a free parameter. Such a result is basically obtained due to the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) value of the Hubble constant, $H_0 = 73.24 \pm 1.74$ $\rm{km.s^{-1}.Mpc^{-1}}$ (68\% C.L.), as the CMB data alone discard the HZ+$N_{eff}$ model. Although such a model …
Using only Ia supernova (SN) observations, it is not possible to distinguish the evolution of the SN absolute magnitude $M_B$ from an arbitrary evolution of the Hubble parameter H(z). However, using Etherington's distance-duality relation, which relates the angular and luminosity distances, together with the observed angular baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale at any redshift z, one may calibrate an effective M(z). This calibration involves a scale which depends on the cosmological model, however the evolution of the effective M(z) between two redshifts with BAO observations is independent…
From the analysis of Supernova Ia data alongwith Observational Hubble Data (OHD) and Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) data, we attempt to find out the nature of a scalar potential that may be responsible for the Dark Energy of the universe. We demonstrate that in order to explain the varying dark energy equation of state ($ω_X(z)$) as obtained in a model independent way from the analyses of observational data, we need to invoke a quintom scalar field having a "quintessence" part for $ω_X(z) > -1$ and a "phantom" part for $ω_X(z) < -1$. We consider a Gaussian type potential for these scalar fi…
We investigate the observational constraints on the cosmic neutrino background (CNB) given by the extended $Λ$CDM scenario ($Λ$CDM $+ N_{\rm eff} + \sum m_ν + c^2_{\rm eff} + c^2_{\rm vis} + ξ_ν$) using the latest observational data from \textit{Planck} CMB (temperature power spectrum, low-polarisation and lensing reconstruction), baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs) , the new recent local value of the Hubble constant from\textit{ Hubble Space Telescope} (\textit{HST}) and information of the abundance of galaxy clusters (GCs). We study the constraints on the CNB background using CMB + BAO + \te…
We revisit the claimed tension, or lack thereof, of measured values of the Hubble-Lemaître parameter $H_0$ from Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data and low-redshift indicators. Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) rely on the scale of the sound horizon at recombination $r_s$ to convert angular measurements into angular-diameter distances, so fixing $r_s$ from CMB measurements already constrains $H_0.$ If departures from concordance cosmology are to be constrained, truly independent measurements of $H_0$ are needed. We use the angular-diameter distances to three time-delay lenses from the H0Li…
We report observations of 240 Cepheid variables obtained with the Near Infrared Camera (NICMOS) through the F160W filter on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The Cepheids are distributed across six recent hosts of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) and the "maser galaxy" NGC 4258, allowing us to directly calibrate the peak luminosities of the SNe Ia from the precise, geometric distance measurements provided by the masers. New features of our measurement include the use of the same instrument for all Cepheid measurements across the distance ladder and homogeneity of the Cepheid periods and metalliciti…
We use flux-transmission correlations in \Lya forests to measure the imprint of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). The study uses spectra of 157,783 quasars in the redshift range $2.1\le z \le 3.5$ from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 12 (DR12). Besides the statistical improvements on our previous studies using SDSS DR9 and DR11, we have implemented numerous improvements in the analysis procedure, allowing us to construct a physical model of the correlation function and to investigate potential systematic errors in the determination of the BAO peak position. The Hubble distan…
An anisotropic measurement of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature fixes the product of the Hubble constant and the acoustic scale $H_0 r_d$. Therefore, regardless of the dark energy dynamics, to accommodate a higher value of $H_0$ one needs a lower $r_d$ and so necessarily a modification of early time cosmology. One must either reduce the age of the Universe at the drag epoch or else the speed of sound in the primordial plasma. The first can be achieved, for example, with dark radiation or very early dark energy, automatically preserving the angular size of the acoustic scale in the …
We propose an analytical parametrization of the comoving distance and Hubble parameter to study the cosmic expansion history beyond the vanilla $Λ$CDM model. The parametrization is generalized enough to include the contribution of spatial curvature and to capture the higher redshift behaviors. With this parameterization, we study the late time cosmic behavior and put constraints on the cosmological parameters like present values of Hubble parameter ($H_{0}$), matter energy density parameter ($Ω_{m0}$), spatial curvature energy density parameter ($Ω_{k0}$) and baryonic matter energy density par…

We conduct a selective analysis of the isotropic ($D_V$) and anisotropic ($AP$) components of the most recent Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) data. We find that these components provide significantly different constraints and could provide strong diagnostics for model selection, also in view of more precise data to arrive. For instance, in the $Λ$CDM model, we find a mild tension of $\sim 2 σ$ for the $Ω_m$ estimates obtained using $D_V$ and $AP$ separately. Considering both $Ω_k$ and $w$ as free parameters, we find that the concordance model is in tension with the best-fit values provided …
Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) provide an important standard ruler which can be used to probe the recent expansion history of our universe. We show how a simple extension of the Om diagnostic, which we call Om3, can combine standard ruler information from BAO with standard candle information from type Ia supernovae (SNIa) to yield a powerful novel null diagnostic of the cosmological constant hypothesis. A unique feature of Om3 is that it requires minimal cosmological assumptions since its determination does not rely upon prior knowledge of either the current value of the matter density and…
