We apply a tension metric $Q_\textrm{UDM}$, the update difference in mean parameters, to understand the source of the difference in the measured Hubble constant $H_0$ inferred with cosmic microwave background lensing measurements from the Planck satellite ($H_0=67.9^{+1.1}_{-1.3}\, \mathrm{km/s/Mpc}$) and from the South Pole Telescope ($H_0=72.0^{+2.1}_{-2.5}\, \mathrm{km/s/Mpc}$) when both are combined with baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements with priors on the baryon density (BBN). $Q_\textrm{UDM}$ isolates the relevant parameter directions for tension or concordance where the two data sets are both informative, and aids in the identification of subsets of data that source the observed tension. With $Q_\textrm{UDM}$, we uncover that the difference in $H_0$ is driven by the tension between Planck lensing and BAO+BBN, at probability-to-exceed of 6.6%. Most of this mild tension comes from the galaxy BAO measurements parallel to the line of sight. The redshift dependence of the parallel BAOs pulls both the matter density $Ω_m$ and $H_0$ high in $Λ$CDM, but these parameter anomalies are usually hidden when the BAO measurements are combined with other cosmological data sets with much stronger $Ω_m$ constraints.
In this paper, the CMB/BAO measurements which cover the 13 redshift data in the regime $0.106 \leq z \leq 2.34$ are given out. The CMB/BAO samples are based on the BAO distance ratios $r_{s}(z_d)/D_{V}(z)$ and the CMB acoustic scales $l_{A}$. It could give out the accelerating behaviors of the $Λ$CDM, $w$CDM and o$Λ$CDM models. As the direction of the degeneracy of $Ω_{m0}-w$ and $Ω_{m0}-Ω_{k0}$ are different for the CMB/BAO and BAO data, the CMB/BAO data show ability of breaking parameter degeneracy. Our tightest constraining results is from the BAO+Planck/BAO+$Ω_{b}h^2$+$Ω_{m}h^2$ data which…
It has been recently shown that the presence of a vector field over cosmological scales could explain the observed accelerated expansion of the universe without introducing neither new scales nor unnatural initial conditions in the early universe, thus avoiding the coincidence problem. Here, we present a detailed analysis of the constraints imposed by SNIa, CMB and BAO data on the vector dark energy model with general spatial curvature. We find that contrary to standard cosmology, CMB data excludes a flat universe for this model and, in fact, predicts a closed geometry for the spatial sections…
We investigate the feasibility of extracting Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) from cosmic shear tomography. We particularly focus on the BAO scale precision that can be achieved by future spectroscopy-based, kinematic weak lensing (KWL) surveys \citep[e.g.,][]{Huff13} in comparison to the traditional photometry-based weak lensing surveys. We simulate cosmic shear tomography data of such surveys with a few simple assumptions to focus on the BAO information, extract the spacial power spectrum, and constrain the recovered BAO feature. Due to the small shape noise and the shape of the lensing ke…
The degeneracy between geometric (Alcock-Paczynski) and dynamic (redshift space) distortions in the pattern of the galaxy distribution has been a long standing problem in the study of the large scale structure of the universe. We examine the possibility of lifting this degeneracy and constraining cosmological parameters by using the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) scale as a feature of known physical size, the sound horizon r_s ~ 150 Mpc. We callibrate this scale with the equivalent feature in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). First, we construct a toy model of a power spectrum which in…
Several interesting Dark Matter (DM) models invoke a dark sector leading to two types of relic particles, possibly interacting with each other: non-relativistic DM, and relativistic Dark Radiation (DR). These models have interesting consequences for cosmological observables, and could in principle solve problems like the small-scale cold DM crisis, Hubble tension, and/or low $σ_8$ value. Their cosmological behaviour is captured by the ETHOS parametrisation, which includes a DR-DM scattering rate scaling like a power-law of the temperature, $T^n$. Scenarios with $n=0$, $2$, or $4$ can easily be…
We use the three-scale framework of Hu et al. to show how the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropy spectrum depends on the fundamental constants. As expected, the spectrum depends only on \emph{dimensionless} combinations of the constants, and we emphasize the points that make this generally true for cosmological observables. Our analysis suggests that the CMB spectrum shape is mostly determined by $α^2m_e/m_p$ and the proton-CDM-particle mass ratio, $m_p/\mchi$. The distance to the last-scattering surface depends on $Gm_p\mchi/\hbar c$, so published CMB observational limits on time variatio…
We study non-perturbatively the effect of the deflection angle on the BAO wiggles of the matter power spectrum in real space. We show that from redshift z~2 this introduces a dispersion of roughly 1 Mpc at BAO scale, which corresponds approximately to a 1% effect. The lensing effect induced by the deflection angle, which is completely geometrical and survey independent, smears out the BAO wiggles. The effect on the power spectrum amplitude at BAO scale is about 0.1% for z~2 and 0.2% for z~4. We compare the smoothing effects induced by the lensing potential and non-linear structure formation, s…
Measurements of the baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) peak in the redshift-space correlation function yield the angular diameter distance D_A(z) and the Hubble parameter H(z) as a function of redshift, constraining the properties of dark energy and space curvature. We discuss the perturbations introduced in the galaxy correlation function by gravitational lensing through the effect of magnification bias and its cross-correlation with the galaxy density. At the BAO scale, gravitational lensing adds a small and slowly varying component to the galaxy correlation function and does not change its…
The weak lensing effect on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) induces distortions in spatial pattern of CMB anisotropies, and statistical properties of CMB anisotropies become a weakly non-Gaussian field. We first summarize the weak lensing effect on the CMB (CMB lensing) in the presence of scalar, vector and tensor perturbations. Then we focus on the lensing effect on CMB statistics and methods to estimate deflection angles and their power spectrum. We end by summarizing recent observational progress and future prospect.
The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation lensing is a promising tool to study the physics of early universe. In this work we probe the imprints of deviations from isotropy and scale invariance of primordial curvature perturbation power spectrum on CMB lensing potential and convergence. Specifically, we consider a scale-dependent hemispherical asymmetry in primordial power spectrum. We show that the CMB lensing potential and convergence and also the cross-correlation of the CMB lensing and late time galaxy convergence can probe the amplitude and the scale dependence of the dipole modulat…
We present a new Planck CMB lensing-CMB temperature cross-correlation likelihood that can be used to constrain cosmology via the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect. CMB lensing is an excellent tracer of ISW, and we use the latest PR4 Planck data maps and lensing reconstruction to produce the first public Planck likelihood to constrain this signal. We demonstrate the likelihood by constraining the CMB background temperature from Planck data alone, where the ISW-lensing cross-correlation is a powerful way to break the geometric degeneracy, substantially improving constraints from the CMB and le…
We forecast how current ({\planck}) and future ({\prism}) cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments constrain the adiabatic mode and its admixtures with primordial isocurvature modes, using measurements of the reconstructed CMB lensing potential and lensing-induced CMB B-mode polarization anisotropies in combination with the CMB temperature and E-mode polarization anisotropies. We first study the characteristic features of the CMB temperature, polarization and lensing spectra for adiabatic and isocurvature modes. We then consider how lensing-induced B-mode polarization and lensing potentia…
During this work, an interacting chameleon like scalar field scenario, by considering SNeIa, CMB, BAO and OHD data sets is investigated. In fact, the investigation is realized by introducing an ansatz for the effective dark energy equation of state, which mimics the behaviour of chameleon like models. Based on this assumption, some cosmological parameters including Hubble, deceleration and coincidence parameters in such mechanism are analysed. It is realized that, to estimate the free parameters of a theoretical model, by regarding the systematic errors it better the whole of the above observa…
We perform a thorough examination of the neutrino mass ($M_ν$) constraints achievable by combining future spectroscopic galaxy surveys with cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments, focusing on the contribution of CMB lensing and galaxy-CMB lensing. CMB lensing can help by breaking the $M_ν$-curvature degeneracy when combined with baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO)-only measurements, but we demonstrate this combination wastes a great deal of constraining power, as the broadband shape of the power spectrum contributes significantly to constraints. We also expand on previous work to demonstr…
We study the CMB lensing signature of a pre-inationary particle (PIP), assuming it is responsible for the giant rings anomaly that was found recently in the WMAP data. Simulating Planck-like data we find that generically the CMB lensing signal to noise ratio associated with such a PIP is quite small and it would be difficult to cross correlate the temperature giant rings with the CMB lensing signal. However, if the pre-inationary particle is also responsible for the bulk flow measured from the local large scale structure, which happens to point roughly at the same direction as the giant rings,…
We discuss detectability of the nonlinear growth of the large-scale structure in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing. Lensing signals involved in CMB anisotropies have been measured from multiple CMB experiments, such as Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), Planck, POLARBEAR, and South Pole Telescope (SPT). Reconstructed lensing signals are useful to constrain cosmology via their angular power spectrum, while detectability and cosmological application of their bispectrum induced by the nonlinear evolution are not well studied. Extending the analytic estimate of the galaxy lensing bispe…
We present results from cross-correlating Planck CMB lensing maps with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) galaxy lensing shape catalog and BOSS galaxy catalogs. For galaxy position vs. CMB lensing cross-correlations, we measure the convergence signal around the galaxies in configuration space, using the BOSS LOWZ ($z\sim0.30$) and CMASS ($z\sim0.57$) samples. With fixed Planck 2015 cosmology, doing a joint fit with the galaxy clustering measurement, for the LOWZ (CMASS) sample we find a galaxy bias $b_g=1.75\pm0.04$ ($1.95\pm 0.02$) and galaxy-matter cross-correlation coefficient $r_{cc}=1.0\…
We study the predictions for structure formation in an induced gravity dark energy model with a quartic potential. By developing a dedicated Einstein-Boltzmann code, we study self-consistently the dynamics of homogeneous cosmology and of linear perturbations without using any parametrization. By evolving linear perturbations with initial conditions in the radiation era, we accurately recover the quasi-static analytic approximation in the matter dominated era. We use Planck 2013 data and a compilation of baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) data to constrain the coupling $γ$ to the Ricci curvatu…
In recent years cross correlation of lensing of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) with other large scale structure (LSS) tracers has been used as a method to detect CMB lensing. Current experiments are also becoming sensitive enough to measure CMB lensing without the help of auxiliary tracers. As data quality improves rapidly, it has been suggested that the CMB lensing-LSS cross correlation may provide new insights into parameters describing cosmological structure growth. In this work we perform forecasts that combine the lensing potential auto power spectrum from various future CMB experi…
Compensated isocurvature perturbations (CIPs) are opposite spatial fluctuations in the baryon and dark matter density. They can be generated for example in the curvaton model in the early Universe but are difficult to observe because their gravitational imprint nearly cancels. We therefore propose a new measurement method by searching for a spatial modulation of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale that CIPs induce. We find that for a Euclid-like survey the sensitivity is marginally better than the WMAP cosmic microwave background (CMB) constraint, which exploits the CIP-induced modulat…
An incomplete sky coverage poses difficulties in the extraction of the weak lensing information from the CMB. We test the reconstruction of the weak lensing convergence from CMB maps to which masks of point sources have been applied. We use the quadratic estimator with a kernel with finite support acting in real space for a Planck simulation. We recover the lensing signal without significant loss of power or addition of spurious correlations, thus showing that masking defected pixels does not affect the reconstruction of the weak lensing convergence in real space.
In this work we investigate the possibility of constraining a thawing Quintessence scalar field model for dark energy. We propose using the imprint of baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) on the cross-correlation of post-reionization 21-cm signal and galaxy weak lensing convergence field to tomographically measure the angular diameter distance $D_A(z)$ and the Hubble parameter $H(z)$. The projected errors in these quantities are then used to constrain the Quintessence model parameters. We find that independent $600$hrs radio interferometric observation at four observing frequencies $916 $MHz, $65…
Yes! Upcoming galaxy shear surveys have the potential to significantly improve our understanding of dark energy and neutrino mass if lensing systematics can be sufficiently controlled. The cross-correlations between the weak lensing shear, galaxy number counts from a galaxy redshift survey, and the CMB lensing convergence can be used to calibrate the shear multiplicative bias, one of the most challenging systematics in lensing surveys. These cross-correlations can significantly reduce the deleterious effects of the uncertainties in multiplicative bias.
We use type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) data in combination with recent baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) and cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations to constrain a kink-like parametrization of the deceleration parameter ($q$). This $q$-parametrization can be written in terms of the initial ($q_i$) and present ($q_0$) values of the deceleration parameter, the redshift of the cosmic transition from deceleration to acceleration ($z_t$) and the redshift width of such transition ($τ$). By assuming a flat space geometry, $q_i=1/2$ and adopting a likelihood approach to deal with the SN Ia data w…
I describe a method to estimate response matrices of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lensing power spectra estimators to the true sky power under realistic conditions. Applicable to all lensing reconstruction pipelines based on quadratic estimators (QE), it uses a small number of Gaussian CMB Monte-Carlos and specially designed QE's in order to obtain sufficiently accurate matrices with little computational effort. This method may be used to improve the modelling of CMB lensing band-powers by incorporating at least some of the non-idealities encountered in CMB lensing reconstruction. These n…
We introduce a new estimator of the CMB lensing power spectrum, together with its likelihood, based on iterative lensing reconstruction. Despite the increased complexity of the lensing maps, this estimator shares similarities with the standard quadratic estimator. Most importantly, it is unbiased towards the assumptions done on the noise and cosmology for the lensing reconstruction. This new spectrum estimator can double the constraints on the lensing amplitude compared to the quadratic estimator, while keeping numerical cost under control and being robust to errors.
The cosmic microwave background (CMB) represents a unique source for the study of gravitational lensing. It is extended across the entire sky, partially polarized, located at the extreme distance of z=1100, and is thought to have the simple, underlying statistics of a Gaussian random field. Here we review the weak lensing of the CMB, highlighting the aspects which differentiate it from the weak lensing of other sources, such as galaxies. We discuss the statistics of the lensing deflection field which remaps the CMB, and the corresponding effect on the power spectra. We then focus on methods fo…
Cosmic microwave background lensing has become a new cosmological probe, carrying rich information on the matter power spectrum and distances over the redshift range $z\approx1$-4. We investigate the role of scale dependent new physics, such as from modified gravity, neutrino mass, and cold (low sound speed) dark energy, and its signature on CMB lensing. The distinction between different scale dependences, and the different redshift dependent weighting of the matter power spectrum entering into CMB lensing and other power spectra, imply that CMB lensing can probe simultaneously a diverse range…
Residual foreground contamination by thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) effect from galaxy clusters in cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps propagates into the reconstructed CMB lensing field, and thus biases the intrinsic cross-correlation between CMB lensing and large-scale structure (LSS). Through stacking analysis, we show that residual tSZ contamination causes an increment of lensing convergence in the central part of the clusters and a decrement of lensing convergence in the cluster outskirts. We quantify the impact of residual tSZ contamination on cross-correlations between the Planck 20…
The rapidly improving precision of measurements of gravitational lensing of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) also requires a corresponding increase in the precision of theoretical modeling. A commonly made approximation is to model the CMB deflection angle or lensing potential as a Gaussian random field. In this paper, however, we analytically quantify the influence of the non-Gaussianity of large-scale structure lenses, arising from nonlinear structure formation, on CMB lensing measurements. In particular, evaluating the impact of the non-zero bispectrum of large-scale structure on the r…
In order to test if there is energy transfer between dark energy and dark matter, we investigate cosmological constraints on two forms of nontrivial interaction between the dark matter sector and the sector responsible for the acceleration of the universe, in light of the newly revised observations including OHD, CMB, BAO and SNe Ia. More precisely, we find the same tendencies for both phenomenological forms of the interaction term $Q=3γHρ$, i.e., the parameter $γ$ to be a small number, $|γ|\approx 10^{-2}$. However, concerning the sign of the interaction parameter, we observe that $γ>0$ when …
CMB and lensing reconstruction power spectra are powerful probes of cosmology. However they are correlated, since the CMB power spectra are lensed and the lensing reconstruction is constructed using CMB multipoles. We perform a full analysis of the auto- and cross-covariances, including polarization power spectra and minimum variance lensing estimators, and compare with simulations of idealized future CMB-S4 observations. Covariances sourced by fluctuations in the unlensed CMB and instrumental noise can largely be removed by using a realization-dependent subtraction of lensing reconstruction n…
We present efficient algorithms for CMB lensing simulation and power spectrum es- timation for flat-sky CMB polarization maps. We build a pure B-mode estimator to remedy E to B leakage due to partial sky coverage. We show that our estimators are unbiased, and consistent with the projected errors. We demonstrate our algorithm using simulated observations of small sky patches with realistic noise and weights for upcoming CMB polarization experiments.
We investigate the impact of non-Gaussian lensing deflections on measurements of the CMB lensing power spectrum. We find that the false assumption of their Gaussianity significantly biases these measurements in current and future experiments at the percent level. The bias is detected by comparing CMB lensing reconstructions from simulated CMB data lensed with Gaussian deflection fields to reconstructions from simulations lensed with fully non-Gaussian deflection fields. The non-Gaussian deflections are produced by ray-tracing through snapshots of an N-body simulation and capture both the non-G…
We reconstruct the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lensing potential on the latest Planck CMB PR4 (NPIPE) maps, which include slightly more data than the 2018 PR3 release, and implement quadratic estimators using more optimal filtering. We increase the reconstruction signal to noise by almost $20\%$, constraining the amplitude of the CMB-marginalized lensing power spectrum in units of the Planck 2018 best-fit to $1.004 \pm 0.024$ ($68\%$ limits), which is the tightest constraint on the CMB lensing power spectrum to date. For a base $Λ$CDM cosmology we find $σ_8 Ω_m^{0.25} = 0.599\pm 0.016$ f…
In the current era of high-precision CMB experiments, the imprint of gravitational lensing on the CMB temperature is exploited as a source of valuable information. Especially the reconstruction of the lensing potential power spectrum is of great interest. The reconstruction from the optimal quadratic estimator of the lensing potential, though, is biased. As long as the intrinsic CMB fluctuations are Gaussian this bias is well understood and controlled. In the presence of non-Gaussian primordial curvature perturbations, however, the CMB also acquires a non-Gaussian structure mimicking the lensi…
We develop a Feynman diagram approach to calculating correlations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) in the presence of distortions. As one application, we focus on CMB distortions due to gravitational lensing by Large Scale Structure (LSS). We study the Hu-Okamoto quadratic estimator for extracting lensing from the CMB and derive the noise of the estimator up to ${\mathcal O}(ϕ^4)$ in the lensing potential $ϕ$. The previously noted large ${\mathcal O}(ϕ^4)$ term can be significantly reduced by a reorganization of the $ϕ$ expansion. Our approach makes it simple to obtain expressions for …
In order to explain the current acceleration of the Universe, the fine tuning problem of the cosmological constant $Λ$ and the cosmic coincidence problem, different alternative models have been proposed in the literature. We use the most recent observational data from CMB (Planck 2018 final data release) and LSS (SDSS, WiggleZ, VIPERS) to constrain dynamical dark energy (DE) models. The CMB shift parameter, which traditionally has been used to determine the main cosmological parameters of the standard model $ΛCDM$ is employed in addition to data from redshift-space distortions through the grow…
We consider the reconstruction of the CMB lensing potential and its power spectrum of the full sphere in presence of sky-cuts due to point sources and Galactic contaminations. Those two effects are treated separately. Small regions contaminated by point sources are filled in using Gaussian constrained realizations. The Galactic plane is simply masked using an apodized mask before lensing reconstruction. This algorithm recovers the power spectrum of the lensing potential with no significant bias.
We propose a novel bias-free method for reconstructing the power spectrum of the weak lensing deflection field from cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations. The proposed method is in contrast to the standard method of CMB lensing reconstruction where a reconstruction bias needs to be subtracted to estimate the lensing power spectrum. This bias depends very sensitively on the modeling of the signal and noise properties of the survey, and a misestimate can lead to significantly inaccurate results. Our method obviates this bias and hence the need to characterize the detailed noise properti…
A promising way to measure the distribution of matter on small scales (k ~ 10 hMpc^-1) is to use gravitational lensing of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). CMB-HD, a proposed high-resolution, low-noise millimeter survey over half the sky, can measure the CMB lensing auto spectrum on such small scales enabling measurements that can distinguish between a cold dark matter (CDM) model and alternative models designed to solve problems with CDM on small scales. However, extragalactic foregrounds can bias the CMB lensing auto spectrum if left untreated. We present a foreground mitigation strateg…
In this paper, we revisit the weak gravitational lensing of CMB. The key point is that the deflection angle of CMB photon varies with the redshift. From this we obtain a set of modified power spectra. Compared with the ones calculated before, the temperature, the polarization E mode and the cross power spectra correction are of the order $0.01 %$, while the polarization B mode correction is about $0.4 %$ (to $l=2000$).
Detailed measurements of the CMB lensing signal are an important scientific goal of ongoing ground-based CMB polarization experiments, which are mapping the CMB at high resolution over small patches of the sky. In this work we simulate CMB polarization lensing reconstruction for the $EE$ and $EB$ quadratic estimators with current-generation noise levels and resolution, and show that without boundary effects the known and expected zeroth and first order $N^{(0)}$ and $N^{(1)}$ biases provide an adequate model for non-signal contributions to the lensing power spectrum estimators. Small sky areas…
Impacts of observational systematic errors on the lensing analysis of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization are investigated by numerical simulations. We model errors of gain, angle, and pointing in observation of the CMB polarization and simulate polarization fields modulated by the errors. We discuss the response of systematics-induced $B$-modes to amplitude and spatial scale of the imposed errors and show that the results of the lensing reconstruction and delensing analysis behave according to it. It is observed that error levels expected in the near future lead to no significa…
We explore the possibility of obtaining better constraints from future astronomical data by means of the Fisher information matrix formalism. In particular, we consider how cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing information can improve our parameter error estimation. We consider a massive neutrino scenario and a time-evolving dark energy equation of state in the $Λ$CDM framework. We use Planck satellite experimental specifications together with the future galaxy survey Euclid in our forecast. We found improvements in almost all studied parameters considering Planck alone when CMB lensing in…
