In this note, we apply a special metric ansatz to simplify the equations of motion for gravitational systems. Then we construct charged brane solutions in $D=n+p+2$ dimensions which have spherical symmetry of $S^n$ and translational symmetry along $p$ directions. They are characterized by mass density, uniform tension and electric/magnetic charges, and nonsingular only for specific tension. In particular, we find the limits and the coordinate transformations which reduce the charged brane solutions to $M2$- and $M5$-branes. We also obtain the regularity condition for an electrically charged two-brane solution which has two tensions.
We calculate the quasi-normal modes of black holes localized on a 3-brane of finite tension embedded in six-dimensional flat spacetime. Using the WKB approximation, we obtain the frequencies of various types of perturbation both analytically and numerically for arbitrary brane tension. We thus extend earlier analytical results which were derived for a brane of small tension.
It is shown that, in the two brane time variation model framework, if the hidden brane tension varies according to the phenomenological Eotvos law, the visible brane tension behavior is such that its time derivative is negative in the past and positive after a specific time of cosmological evolution. This behavior is interpreted in terms of an useful mechanical system analog and its relation with the variation of the Newtonian (effective) gravitational `constant' is explored.
We consider black-brane spacetimes that have at least one spatial translation Killing field that is tangent to the brane. A new parameter, the tension of a spacetime, is defined. The tension parameter is associated with spatial translations in much the same way that the ADM mass is associated with the time translation Killing field. In this work, we explore the implications of the spatial translation symmetry for small perturbations around a background black brane. For static charged black branes we derive a law which relates the tension perturbation to the surface gravity times the change in …
A general class of solutions of string background equations is studied and its physical interpretations are presented. These solutions correspond to generalizations of the standard black p-brane solutions to surfaces with curvature k=-1,0. The relation with the recently introduced S-branes is provided. The mass, charge, entropy and Hawking temperature are computed, illustrating the interpretation in terms of negative tension branes. Their cosmological interpretation is discussed as well as their potential instability under small perturbations.
We elaborate the signature of the extra dimensions and brane tension in the process of phantom and massive scalar emission in the spacetime of (4+n)-dimensional tense brane black hole. Absorption cross section, luminosity of Hawking radiation and cross section in the low-energy approximation were found. We envisage that parameter connected with the existence of a brane imprints its role in the Hawking radiation of the considered fields.
In this work, we review and extend the so-called consistency conditions for the existence of a braneworld scenario in arbitrary dimensions in the Brans-Dicke (BD) gravitational theory. After that, we consider the particular case of a five-dimensional scenario which seems to have phenomenological interesting implications. We show that, in the BD framework, it is possible to achieve necessary conditions pointing to the possibility of accommodating branes with positive tensions in an AdS bulk by the presence of the additional BD scalar field, avoiding in this way the necessity of including unstab…
String tension fundamentally determines the properties of strings; yet its value is often assigned arbitrarily, creating a fine-tuning problem. We describe a mechanism for dynamically generating string tension in a flat or almost flat spacetime, using the modified measures formalism, which in turn naturally generates a new type of stringy brane-world scenario. Such a scenario allows strings to achieve near infinite tension confining the strings to two very close expanding surfaces, but the infinite tensions also threatens to distort the near-flat embedding spacetime through large back reaction…
We consider the collision in 2+1 dimensions of a black hole and a negative tension brane on an orbifold. Because there is no gravitational radiation in 2+1 dimensions, the horizon area shrinks when part of the brane falls through. This provides a potential violation of the generalized second law of thermodynamics. However, tracing the details of the dynamical evolution one finds that it does not proceed from equilibrium configuration to equilibrium configuration. Instead, a catastrophic space-time singularity develops similar to the `big crunch' of $Ω>1$ FRW space-times. In the context of clas…
Braneworld models with variable brane tension $λ$ introduce a new degree of freedom that allows for evolving gravitational and cosmological constants, the latter being a natural candidate for dark energy. We consider a thermodynamic interpretation of the varying brane tension models, by showing that the field equations with variable $λ$ can be interpreted as describing matter creation in a cosmological framework. The particle creation rate is determined by the variation rate of the brane tension, as well as by the brane-bulk energy-matter transfer rate. We investigate the effect of a variable …
We obtain ADM and Komar surface integrals for the energy density, tension and angular momentum density of stationary $p$-brane solutions of Einstein's equations. We use them to derive a Smarr-type formula for the energy density and thence a first law of black brane mechanics. The intensive variable conjugate to the worldspace p-volume is an `effective' tension that equals the ADM tension for uncharged branes, but vanishes for isotropic boost-invariant charged branes.
In the Cascading Gravity brane-world scenario, our 3-brane lies within a succession of lower-codimension branes, each with their own induced gravity term, embedded into each other in a higher-dimensional space-time. In the 6+1-dimensional version of this scenario, we show that a 3-brane with tension remains flat, at least for sufficiently small tension that the weak-field approximation is valid. The bulk solution is nowhere singular and remains in the perturbative regime everywhere.
We study a flat brane solution in an effective 5D action for cascading gravity and propose a mechanism to screen extrinsic curvature in the presence of a large tension on the brane. The screening mechanism leaves the bulk Riemann-flat, thus making it simpler to generalize large extra dimension dark energy models to higher codimensions. By studying an action with cubic interactions for the brane-bending scalar mode, we find that the perturbed action suffers from ghostlike instabilities for positive tension, whereas it can be made ghost-free for sufficiently small negative tension.
We introduce brane-worlds with non-constant tension, strenghtening the analogy with fluid membranes, which exhibit a temperature-dependence according to the empirical law established by Eötvös. This new degree of freedom allows for evolving gravitational and cosmological constants, the latter being a natural candidate for dark energy. We establish the covariant dynamics on a brane with variable tension in full generality, by considering asymmetrically embedded branes and allowing for non-standard model fields in the 5-dimensional space-time. Then we apply the formalism for a perfect fluid on a…
There is great interest in the construction of brane worlds, where matter and gravity are forced to be effective only in a lower dimensional surface , the brane . How these could appear as a consequence of string theory is a crucial question and this has been widely discussed. Here we will examine a distinct scenario that appears in dynamical tension theories and where string tension is positive between two surfaces separated by a short distance and at the two surfaces themselves the string tensions become infinite, therefore producing an effective confinement of the strings and therefore of a…
The constraint of trans-Planckian censorship conjecture on brane inflation model is considered. The conjectures put an upper bound on the main parameter including temperature, inflation time, potential, and the tensor-to-scalar ratio parameter $r$. It is determined that the resulting constraint could be more stronger than what we have for the standard inflationary models. The constraint in general depends on the brane tension and it is concluded that the conjecture also confined the value of brane tension in order to have consistency for the model. Confining the brane tension turns into a dete…
We derive the low-energy effective action of four-dimensional gravity in the Randall-Sundrum scenario in which two 3-branes of opposite tension reside in a five-dimensional spacetime. The dimensional reduction with the Ansatz for the radion field by Charmousis et al., which solves five-dimensional linearized field equations, results in a class of scalar-tensor gravity theories. In the limit of vanishing radion fluctuations, the effective action reduces to the Brans-Dicke gravity in accord with the results of Garriga and Tanaka: Brans-Dicke gravity with the corresponding Brans-Dicke parameter $…
A simple five-dimensional brane world model is proposed, motivated by M-theory compactified on a six-dimensional manifold of small radius and an $S^1/Z_2$ of large radius. We include a leading-order higher curvature correction to the tree-level bulk action since in brane world scenarios the curvature scale in the bulk may be comparable to the five-dimensional Planck scale and, thus, higher curvature corrections may become important. As a tractable model of the bulk theory we consider pure gravity including a $(Ricci-scalar)^4$-correction to the Einstein-Hilbert action. In this model theory, af…
In this work we study a brane world model with variable tension which gives rise to four dimensional cosmologies. The brane worlds obtained correspond to Eötvös branes whose (internal) geometry can be casted as either a four dimensional (A)dS$_{4}$ or a standard radiation period cosmology. The matter dominated period is discussed as well.
We show that the Gauss-Bonnet correction to Einstein gravity induces a gravitational tachyon mode, namely an unstable spin 2 fluctuation, in the Randall-Sundrum I model. We demonstrate that this instability is generically related to the presence of a negative tension brane in the set-up, with or without $Z_2$-symmetry across it. Indeed it is shown that the tachyon mode is a bound state localised on any negative tension brane of co-dimension one, embedded in anti-de Sitter background. We discuss the possible resolution of this instability by the inclusion of induced gravity terms on the branes …
We consider ``brane universe'' with nonzero tension in the models with large extra dimensions. We find exact solutions of higher-dimensional Einstein equations with single flat Minkowsky brane of arbitrary large tension (or brane cosmological constant) and compact extra dimensions. The brane curves the bulk space-time in a small region around it. There is no fine tuning of energy scales in our model.
It is shown that negative tension branes in higher dimensions may lead to an effective lower dimensional theory where the gauge-invariant vector fields associated with the fluctuations of the metric are always massless and localized on the brane. Explicit five-dimensional examples of this phenomenon are provided. Furthermore, it is shown that higher dimensional gauge fields can also be localized on these configurations with the zero mode separated from the massive tower by a gap.
We examine the stability of extremal braneworld Reissner-Nordström black holes under massive charged scalar perturbations. We show that similar to the four-dimensional case, the superradiant amplification can occur in braneworld charged holes. More interestingly we find that when the spacetime dimension is higher than four, a trapping potential well can emerge outside the braneworld black hole. This potential well is the extra dimensional effect and does not exist in four dimensions. It triggers the superradiant instability of the extremal braneworld charged holes.
After incorporating the f(R) gravity into the general braneworld sum rules scope, it is shown that some particular class of warped five dimensional nonlinear braneworld models, which may be interesting for the hierarchy problem solution, still require a negative tension brane. For other classes of warp factors (suitable and not suitable for approaching the hierarchy problem) it is not necessary any negative brane tension in the compactification scheme. In this vein, it is argued that in the bulk f(R) gravity context, some types of warp factors may be useful for approaching the hierarchy proble…
In this note, we consider the equations of motion for charged branes in AdS space and show that they can be cast into one-dimensional coupled Toda type. Then we solve the equations of motion to construct static charged AdS brane solutions which are invariant under translation along $p$ directions and have toroidal symmetry. The solutions are described by mass, charges and a dilaton coupling constant.
Braneworld models with variable tension are investigated, and the corrections on the black string horizon along the extra dimension are provided. Such corrections are encrypted in additional terms involving the covariant derivatives of the variable tension on the brane, providing profound consequences concerning the black string horizon variation along the extra dimension, near the brane. The black string horizon behavior is shown to be drastically modified by the terms corrected by the brane variable tension. In particular, a model motivated by the phenomenological interesting case regarding …
We construct a familly of exact solutions of Lovelock equations describing codimension four branes with discrete symmetry in the transverse space. Unlike what is known from pure Einstein gravity, where such brane solutions of higher codimension are singular, the solutions we find, for the complete Lovelock theory, only present removable singularities. The latter account for a localised tension-like energy-momentum tensor on the brane, in analogy with the case of a codimension two self-gravitating cosmic string in pure Einstein gravity. However, the solutions we discuss present two main distinc…
Semiclassical Einstein's equation in five-dimension with a negative cosmological constant and conformally invariant bulk matter fields is examined in the brane world scenario with the S^1/Z_2 compactification. When numbers N_{b,f} of bosonic and fermionic fields satisfy I<κ^2l^{-3}(N_b-N_f)<32I, we obtain an exact semiclassical solution which has two static branes with positive tension and for which the warp factor can be arbitrarily large. Here, κ^2 is the five-dimensional gravitational constant, l is a length scale determined by the negative five-dimensional cosmological constant, and $I$ is…
We study brane-world models with variable brane tension and compute corrections to the horizon of a black string along the extra dimension. The four-dimensional geometry of the black string on the brane is obtained by means of the minimal geometric deformation approach, and the bulk corrections are then encoded in additional terms involving the covariant derivatives of the variable brane tension. Our investigation shows that the variable brane tension strongly affects the shape and evolution of the black string horizon along the extra dimension, at least in a near-brane expansion. In particula…
Here we derive the exact Reissner-Nordström black hole solution on a tensional codimension-2 brane, generalizing earlier Schwarzschild and Kerr results. We begin by briefly reviewing various aspects of codimension-2 branes that will be important for our analysis, including the mechanism of "offloading" of brane tension into the bulk that is unique to these branes, as well as the explicit construction of the codimension-2 Schwarzschild black hole as a warm-up exercise. We then show that the same methods can be used to find the metric describing the spacetime surrounding an electrically-charged …
We present in this work a study of brane theory phenomenology focusing on the brane tension parameter, which is the main observable of the theory. We show the modifications steaming from the presence of branes in the rotation curves of spiral galaxies for three well known dark matter density profiles: the Pseudo isothermal, Navarro-Frenk-White and Burkert dark matter density profiles. We estimate the brane tension parameter using a sample of high resolution observed rotation curves of low surface brightness spiral galaxies and a synthetic rotation curve for the three density profiles. Also, th…
We present a generalization of the five dimensional multigravity models to six dimensions. The key characteristic of these constructions is that that we obtain solutions which do not have any negative tension branes while at the same time the branes are kept flat. This is due to the fact that in six dimensions the internal space is not trivial and its curvature allows bounce configurations with the above feature. These constructions give for the first time a theoretically and phenomenologically viable realization of multigravity.
We identify a time-dependent class of metrics with potential applications to cosmology, which emerge from negative-tension branes. The cosmology is based on a general class of solutions to Einstein-dilaton-Maxwell theory, presented in {hep-th/0106120}. We argue that solutions with hyperbolic or planar symmetry describe the gravitational interactions of a pair of negative-tension $q$-branes. These spacetimes are static near each brane, but become time-dependent and expanding at late epoch -- in some cases asymptotically approaching flat space. We interpret this expansion as being the spacetime'…
We present a comprehensive black-hole event generator, BlackMax, which simulates the experimental signatures of microscopic and Planckian black-hole production and evolution at the LHC in the context of brane world models with low-scale quantum gravity. The generator is based on phenomenologically realistic models free of serious problems that plague low-scale gravity, thus offering more realistic predictions for hadron-hadron colliders. The generator includes all of the black-hole graybody factors known to date and incorporates the effects of black-hole rotation, splitting between the fermion…
Negative energy objects generally lead to instabilities and a number of other disturbing behaviors. In particular, negative energy fluxes lead to a breakdown of the classical area theorem for black hole horizons, which can lead to violations of the second law of thermodynamics. The negative energy objects that arise in string theory involve special boundary conditions which remove the perturbative instabilities. We show that they have additional special features which allow them to evade contradiction with the second law. We identify one mechanism which applies for most orientifold planes in s…
We study scalar perturbations of nonlinear charged Lifshitz black branes with hyperscaling violating factor, and we find numerically the quasinormal modes for scalar fields. Then, we study the stability of these black branes under massive and massless scalar field perturbations. Also, we consider different values of the dynamical exponent, the nonlinear exponent and the hyperscaling violating exponent.
Path and path deviation equations for neutral, charged, spinning and spinning charged test particles, using a modified Bazanski Lagrangian, are derived. We extend this approach to strings and branes. We show how the Bazanski Lagrangian for charged point particles and charged branes arises `a la Kaluza-Klein from the Bazanski Lagrangian in 5-dimensions.
We demonstrate that there exists an inflationary solution on the positive tension brane in the Randall-Sundrum scenario. Inflation is driven by a slow-rolling scalar field on the brane and is achieved within the perturbative limit of the radion field. We find that inflation on the positive tension brane results in a slight increase in the separation between the two branes. However, we show that the slow-roll inflation is not possible on the negative tension brane.
We propose an extension of the five dimensional gravitational action with an external source in order to allow arbitrary smoothing of the negative tension brane in the Randall-Sundrum model. This extended action can be derived from a model with an auxiliary four form field coupled to the gravity. We point out a further generalization of our model in relation to tachyon condensation. A possible mechanism for radion stabilization in our model is also discussed.
We generalize the vacuum static black brane solutions of Einstein's equations with negative cosmological constant recently discussed in literature, by introducing rotations and an electromagnetic field. We investigate numerically the thermodynamical properties of the charged and of the rotating $AdS$ black brane and we provide evidences for the existence of the charged and rotating case. In particular, we study the influence of the rotation and charge on the tension and mass. We find that the rotation essentially influences the tensions while the charge essentially influences the mass.
We study the absorption probability and Hawking radiation of the scalar field in the rotating black holes on codimension-2 branes. We find that finite brane tension modifies the standard results in Hawking radiation if compared with the case when brane tension is completely negligible. We observe that the rotation of the black hole brings richer physics. Nonzero angular momentum triggers the super-radiance which becomes stronger when the angular momentum increases. We also find that rotations along different angles influence the result in absorption probability and Hawking radiation. Compared …
We introduce the surface term for quasitopological gravity in order to make the variational principle of the action well-defined. We also introduce the charged black branes of quasitopological gravity and calculate the finite action through the use of counterterm method. Then we compute the thermodynamic quantities of the black brane solution by use of Gibbs free energy and investigate the first law of thermodynamics by introducing a Smarr-type formula. Finally, we generalize our solutions to the case of rotating charged solutions.
We study electromagnetically charged dilatonic black brane solutions in arbitrary dimensions with flat transverse spaces, that are asymptotically AdS. This class of solutions includes spacetimes which possess a bulk region where the metric is approximately invariant under Lifshitz scalings. Given fixed asymptotic boundary conditions, we analyze how the behavior of the bulk up to the horizon varies with the charges and derive the extremality conditions for these spacetimes.
We present the first-order corrected dynamics of fluid branes carrying higher-form charge by obtaining the general form of their equations of motion to pole-dipole order. Assuming linear response theory, we characterize the corresponding effective theory of stationary bent charged (an)isotropic fluid branes in terms of two sets of response coefficients, the Young modulus and the piezoelectric moduli. We subsequently find large classes of examples in gravity of this effective theory, by constructing stationary strained charged black brane solutions to first order in a derivative expansion. Usin…
We consider charged rotating black holes localized on a three-brane in the DGP model. Assuming a $Z_2$-symmetry across the brane and with a stationary and axisymmetric metric ansatz on the brane, a particular solution is obtained in the Kerr-Schild form. This solution belongs to the accelerated branch of the DGP model and has the characteristic of the Kerr-Newman-de Sitter type solution in general relativity. Using a modified version of Boyer-Lindquist coordinates we examine the structures of the horizon and ergosphere.
We investigate general features of charged Lovelock black branes by giving a detailed description of geometrical, thermodynamic and holographic properties of charged Gauss-Bonnet (GB) black branes in five dimensions. We show that when expressed in terms of effective physical parameters, the thermodynamic behaviour of charged GB black branes is completely indistinguishable from that of charged Einstein black branes. Moreover, the extremal, near-horizon limit of the two classes of branes is exactly the same as they allow for the same AdS$_2\times R_3$, near-horizon, exact solution. This implies …
Regular black strings solutions associated to a dynamical Friedmann-Robertson-Walker braneworld are obtained as a particular case of a regular bulk metric, in the context of a variable brane tension. By analyzing the 5D Kretschmann invariants, we show that the variable brane tension is capable to remove bulk singularities, along some eras of the evolution of the Universe. In particular, the black string time-dependent profile in the bulk is analyzed in the context of the McVittie metric on an Eötvös fluid braneworld, wherein the fluid dynamical brane tension depends on the brane temperature. T…
By intersecting the RR charged D_p - bar{D}_p pair (p=6, 4, 2, 0) with the RR F7-brane and by intersecting the NSNS charged F1-bar{F1} and NS5-bar{NS5} pairs with the NSNS F6-branes, the possibility of stabilizing the brane-antibrane systems is considered. The behavior of the corresponding supergravity solutions indicates that the RR F7-brane content of the solution plays the role of keeping the brane and the antibrane from annihilating each other completely since the two-brane configuration structure still persists in the vanishing inter-brane distance limit of the supergravity solution. In t…
We study dyonic solutions to the gravity-dilaton-antisymmetric form equations with the goal of identifying new $p$-brane solutions on the fluxed linear dilaton background. Starting with the generic solutions constructed by reducing the system to decoupled Liouville equations for certain values of parameters, we identify the most general solution whose singularities are hidden behind a regular event horizon, and then explore the admissible asymptotic behaviors. In addition to known asymptotically flat dyonic branes, we find two classes of asymptotically non-flat solutions which can be interpret…
In a simple reanalysis of the KKLMMT scenario, we argue that the slow roll condition in the D3-anti-D3-brane inflationary scenario in superstring theory requires no more than a moderate tuning. The cosmic string tension is very sensitive to the conformal coupling: with less fine-tuning, the cosmic string tension (as well as the ratio of tensor to scalar perturbation mode) increases rapidly and can easily saturate the present observational bound. In a multi-throat brane inflationary scenario, this feature substantially improves the chance of detecting and measuring the properties of the cosmic …
We give a new, intrinsic, mass definition for spacetimes asymptotic to the Randall-Sundrum braneworld models, RS1 and RS2. For this mass, we prove a first law for static black holes, including variations of the bulk cosmological constant, brane tensions, and RS1 interbrane distance. Our first law defines a thermodynamic volume and a gravitational tension that are braneworld analogs of the corresponding quantities in asymptotically AdS black hole spacetimes and asymptotically flat compactifications, respectively. We also prove the following related variational principle for asymptotically RS bl…
A brane universe derived from the Randall-Sundrum models is considered in which an additional Misner-like periodicity is introduced in the extra direction. This model solves the ambiguity in the choice of the brane world by identifying the branes with opposite tensions, in such a way that if one enters the brane with positive tension, one finds oneself emerging from the brane with negative tension, without having experienced any tension. We show that the cosmological evolution resulting from this model matches that of the standard Friedmann scenario, at least in the radiation dominated era, an…
The high value of brane tension has a crucial role in recovering Einstein's general relativity at low energies. In the framework of a recently developed formalism with variable brane tension one can pose the question, whether it was always that high? In analogy with fluid membranes, in this paper we allow for temperature dependent brane tension, according to the corresponding law established by Eötvös. For cosmological branes this assumption leads to several immediate consequences: (a) The brane Universe was created at a finite temperature $T_{c}$ and scale factor $a_{\min}$. (b) Both the bran…
We investigate negative tension branes as stable thin shell wormholes in Reissner-Nordstrom-(anti) de Sitter spacetimes in $d$ dimensional Einstein gravity. Imposing Z2 symmetry, we construct and classify traversable static thin shell wormholes in spherical, planar (or cylindrical) and hyperbolic symmetries. In spherical geometry, we find the higher dimensional counterpart of Barcelo and Visser's wormholes, which are stable against spherically symmetric perturbations. We also find the classes of thin shell wormholes in planar and hyperbolic symmetries with a negative cosmological constant, whi…
In recent work we have shown that a black hole stacked on a brane escapes once it acquires a recoil velocity. This result was obtained in the {\it probe-brane} approximation, {\it i.e.}, when the tension of the brane is negligibly small. Therefore, it is not clear whether the effect of the brane tension may prevent the black hole from escaping for small recoil velocities. The question is whether a critical escape velocity exists. Here, we analyze this problem by studying the interaction between a Dirac-Nambu-Goto brane and a black hole assuming adiabatic (quasi-static) evolution. By describing…
