Using the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer Space Telescope, we present low-resolution (64 < lambda / dlambda < 124), mid-infrared (20-38 micron) spectra of 23 high-redshift ULIRGs detected in the Bootes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. All of the sources were selected to have 1) fnu(24 micron) > 0.5 mJy; 2) R-[24] > 14 Vega mag; and 3) a prominent rest-frame 1.6 micron stellar photospheric feature redshifted into Spitzer's 3-8 micron IRAC bands. Of these, 20 show emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), usually interpreted as signatures of star formation. The PAH features indicate redshifts in the range 1.5 < z < 3.0, with a mean of <z>=1.96 and a dispersion of 0.30. Based on local templates, these sources have extremely large infrared luminosities, comparable to that of submillimeter galaxies. Our results confirm previous indications that the rest-frame 1.6 micron stellar bump can be efficiently used to select highly obscured starforming galaxies at z~2, and that the fraction of starburst-dominated ULIRGs increases to faint 24 micron flux densities. Using local templates, we find that the observed narrow redshift distribution is due to the fact that the 24 micron detectability of PAH-rich sources peaks sharply at z = 1.9. We can analogously explain the broader redshift distribution of Spitzer-detected AGN-dominated ULIRGs based on the shapes of their SEDs. Finally, we conclude that z~2 sources with a detectable 1.6 micron stellar opacity feature lack sufficient AGN emission to veil the 7.7 micron PAH band.
We present the first detections of the 3um water ice and 3.4um amorphous hydrocarbon (HAC) absorption features in z~2 ULIRGs. These are based on deep rest-frame 2-8um Spitzer IRS spectra of 11 sources selected for their appreciable silicate absorption. The HAC-to-silicate ratio for our z~2 sources is typically higher by a factor of 2-5 than that observed in the Milky Way. This HAC `excess' suggests compact nuclei with steep temperature gradients as opposed to predominantly host obscuration. Beside the above molecular absorption features, we detect the 3.3um PAH emission feature in one of our s…
We report the results from a comprehensive study of 74 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) and 34 Palomar-Green (PG) quasars within z ~ 0.3$ observed with the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS). The contribution of nuclear activity to the bolometric luminosity in these systems is quantified using six independent methods that span a range in wavelength and give consistent results within ~ +/-10-15% on average. The average derived AGN contribution in ULIRGs is ~35-40%, ranging from ~15-35% among "cool" (f_25/f_60 =< 0.2) optically classified HII-like and LINER ULIRGs to ~50 and ~75% among …
For star-forming galaxies, we investigate a global relation between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission luminosity at 3.3 um, L_PAH3.3, and infrared (8-1000 um) luminosity, L_IR, to understand how the PAH 3.3 um feature relates to the star formation activity. With AKARI, we performed near-infrared (2.5-5 um) spectroscopy of 184 galaxies which have L_IR \sim 10^8 - 10^13 L_sun. We classify the samples into infrared galaxies (IRGs; L_IR < 10^11 L_sun), luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs; L_IR \sim 10^11 -10^12 L_sun) and ultra luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs; L_IR > 10^12 L_sun). We…
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features dominate the mid-infrared spectra of star-forming galaxies and can be useful to calibrate star formation rates and diagnose ionized states of grains. However, the PAH 3.3 micron feature has not been studied as much as other PAH features since it is weaker than others and resides outside of Spitzer capability. In order to detect and calibrate the 3.3 micron PAH emission and investigate its potential as a star formation rate indicator, we carried out an AKARI mission program, AKARI mJy Unbiased Survey of Extragalactic Survey (AMUSES) and co…
We present ultra-deep mid-IR spectra of 48 infrared-luminous galaxies in the GOODS-South field obtained with the InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. These galaxies are selected among faint infrared sources (0.14 - 0.5 mJy at 24 um) in two redshift bins (0.76-1.05 and 1.75-2.4) to sample the major contributors to the cosmic infrared background at the most active epochs. We estimate redshifts for 92% of the sample using PAH and Si absorption features. Only few of these galaxies (5% at z~1 and 12% at z~2) have their total infrared luminosity dominated by emission from AGN.…
We analyze a sample of galaxies chosen to have F24>0.5 mJy and satisfy a certain IRAC color criterion. IRS spectra yield redshifts, spectral types, and PAH luminosities, to which we add multi-wavelength broadband photometry. Stellar population modeling and IRS spectra together demonstrate that the double criteria used to select this sample have efficiently isolated massive star-forming galaxies at z~1.9. This is the first starburst-dominated ULIRG sample at high redshift with total infrared luminosity measured directly from FIR and millimeter photometry, and as such gives us the first accurate…
We analyze the link between active galactic nuclei (AGN) and mid-infrared flux using dust radiative transfer calculations of starbursts realized in hydrodynamical simulations. Focusing on the effects of galaxy dust, we evaluate diagnostics commonly used to disentangle AGN and star formation in ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). We examine these quantities as a function of time, viewing angle, dust model, AGN spectrum, and AGN strength in merger simulations representing two possible extremes of the ULIRG population: one is a typical gas-rich merger at z ~ 0, and the other is characterist…
We explore the relationship between gas, dust and star formation in a sample of 12 ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at high redshift compared to a similar sample of local galaxies. We present new CO observations and/or Spitzer mid-IR spectroscopy for 6 70 micron selected galaxies at z~1 in order to quantify the properties of the molecular gas reservoir, the contribution of an active galactic nuclei (AGN) to the mid-IR luminosity and the star formation efficiency (SFE=LIR/L'CO). The mid-IR spectra show strong polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission and our spectral decomposition…
Spitzer and AKARI observations have found that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are present in nearby elliptical galaxies, but their spatial distributions are still unknown. In order to investigate their distributions, we performed deep spectral mapping observations of the PAH-detected elliptical galaxy NGC4589, a merger remnant with a minor-axis optical dust lane. As a result, we obtain clear evidence that the PAH 11.3 um emission comes predominantly from the dust lane of the galaxy. We also detect molecular hydrogen line emissions from the dust lane. The PAH 17 um emission is distribu…
We present the results of our systematic infrared 2.5-5 micron spectroscopy of 60 luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) with infrared luminosities L(IR) = 10^11-12 Lsun, and 54 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with L(IR) > 10^12 Lsun, using AKARI IRC. AKARI IRC slit-less spectroscopy allows us to probe the full range of emission from these galaxies, including spatially extended components. The 3.3 micron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features, hydrogen recombination emission lines, and various absorption features are detected and used to investigate the properties of thes…
We report the discovery of blue shifted (delta(V) > 200 km/s) mid-infrared [NeIII] and/or [NeV] emission in 25 out of 82 ULIRGs (30% of our sample). The incidence of blue shifted [NeV] emission is even higher (59%) among the sources with a [NeV] detection -- the tell-tale signature of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Sixteen ULIRGs in our sample, eleven of which are optically classified as AGN, have [NeIII] blue shifts above 200 km/s. A comparison of the line profiles of their 12.81um [NeII], 15.56um [NeIII] and 14.32um [NeV] lines reveals the ionization of the blue shifted gas to increase wi…
We present an optical spectroscopic study of a 90% complete sample of 17 nearby ULIRGs with optical Seyfert nuclei, with the aim of investigating the nature of the nuclear warm gas outflows. A high proportion (94%) of our sample show disturbed emission line kinematics in the form of broad (FWHM > 500 km s-1) and/or strongly blueshifted (ΔV < -150 km s-1) emission line components. This proportion is significantly higher than found in a comparison sample of non-Sy ULIRGs (19%). We also find evidence that the [OII]5007,4959 emission lines in Sy-ULIRGs are broader and more asymmetric that in sampl…
We investigate the connection between starburst and AGN activity by comparing the 3.3 μm PAH eimission with AGN properties. Utilizing the slit-less spectroscopic capability of the AKARI space telescope, we observe moderate-luminosity Type I AGN at z~0.4 to measure global starburst activity. The 3.3 μm PAH emissions are detected for 7 out of 26 target galaxies. We find no strong correlation between the 3.3 μm PAH emission and AGN luminosity in the limted range of the observed AGN luminosity, suggesting that global star formation may not be tightly related with AGN activity. Combining our measur…
We have performed IRS low resolution 5-12 micron spectroscopy on a sample of galaxies selected to be at 3 distinct post-starburst evolutionary stages based on their optical spectral indices. The resulting IRS spectra show distinctive PAH emission line structures at 6.2, 7.7, 8.6 and 11.3 micron and little silicate absorption, indicative of ongoing star formation. However the PAH inter-line ratios, in particular the 11.3/6.2 micron and 7.7/6.2 micron ratio, show large variations. These variations are found to correlate with both time since the most recent starburst and AGN activity. We speculat…
Recent observations have shown the presence of dust and molecular material in galactic winds, but relatively little is known about the distribution of these outflow components. To shed some light on this issue, we have used IRAC images from the Spitzer Space Telescope archive to investigate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission from a sample of 16 local galaxies with known winds. Our focus on nearby sources (median distance 8.6 Mpc) has revealed detailed PAH structure in the winds and allowed us to measure extraplanar PAH emission. We have identified extraplanar PAH features on scales…
Low-resolution, mid-infrared Spitzer/IRS spectral maps are presented for three nearby, low-metallicity dwarf galaxies (NGC 55, NGC 3109 and IC 5152) for the purpose of examining the spatial distribution and variation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission. The sample straddles a metallicity of 12+log(O/H)~8.0, a transition point below which PAH intensity empirically drops and the character of the interstellar medium changes. We derive quantitative radiances of PAH features and atomic lines on both global and spatially-resolved scales. The Spitzer spectra, combined with extensive anc…
We present the analysis of Spitzer-IRS spectra of four early-type galaxies, NGC 1297, NGC 5044, NGC 6868, and NGC 7079, all classified as LINERs in the optical bands. Their IRS spectra present the full series of H2 rotational emission lines in the range 5--38 microns, atomic lines, and prominent PAH features. We investigate the nature and origin of the PAH emission, characterized by unusually low 6 -- 9/11.3 microns inter-band ratios. After the subtraction of a passive early type galaxy template, we find that the 7 -- 9 microns spectral region requires dust features not normally present in sta…
It is important to understand the interplay between nuclear star-formation and nuclear activity when studying the evolution of gas rich galaxy mergers. We present here new spatially resolved L-band integral field unit observations of the inner kpc of the luminous IR galaxy NGC 1614. A broad ring of 3.3 um PAH emission is found at a distance of approximately 200 pc from the core. This ring overlaps with a previously established star-forming ring detected with Pa_alpha and radio continuum observations, but peaks outside it, especially if determined using the PAH equivalent width. Using the chara…
We want to study the mid-infrared properties and the starburst and AGN contributions, of 24um sources at z~2, through analysis of mid-infrared spectra combined with millimeter, radio, and infrared photometry. Mid-infrared spectroscopy allows us to recover accurate redshifts. A complete sample of 16 Spitzer-selected sources (ULIRGs) believed to be starbursts at z~2 ("5.8um-peakers") was selected in the (0.5 sq.deg.) J1064+56 SWIRE Lockman Hole field. These sources have S(24um)>0.5mJy, a stellar emission peak redshifted to 5.8um, and r'(Vega)>23. The entire sample was observed with the low resol…
We present the first principal component analysis (PCA) applied to a sample of 119 Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) spectra of local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z<0.35. The purpose of this study is to objectively and uniquely characterise the local ULIRG population using all information contained in the observed spectra. We have derived the first three principal components (PCs) from the covariance matrix of our dataset which account for over 90% of the variance. The first PC is characterised by dust temperatures and the geometry of the mix of source and dust. The second PC …
The traditional view that Ly-alpha emission and dust should be mutually exclusive has been questioned more and more often; most notably, the observations of Ly-alpha emission from ULIRGs seem to counter this view. In this paper we seek to address the reverse question. How large a fraction of Ly-alpha selected galaxies are ULIRGs? Using two samples of 24/25 Ly-alpha emitting galaxies at z = 0.3/2.3, we perform this test, including results at z = 3.1, and find that, whereas the ULIRG fraction at z = 3.1 is very small, it systematically increases towards lower redshifts. There is a hint that this…
We present an application of the da Cunha, Charlot & Elbaz (2008) model of the spectral energy distribution (SEDs) of galaxies from the ultraviolet to far-infrared to a small pilot sample of purely star-forming Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs). We interpret the observed SEDs of 16 ULIRGs using this physically-motivated model which accounts for the emission of stellar populations from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared and for the attenuation by dust in two components: an optically-thick starburst component and the diffuse ISM. The infrared emission is computed by assuming that all t…
We study the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) bands, ionic emission lines, and Mid-infrared continuum properties, in a sample of 171 emission line galaxies taken from literature plus 15 new active galactic nuclei (AGN) Spitzer spectra. The continuum shape steeply rises for longer wavelengths and can be fitted with a warm blackbody distribution of T=150-300K. The brightest PAH spectral bands (6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.3, and 12.7$μ$m) and the forbidden emission lines of [Si II] 34.8$μ$m, [Ar II] 6.9, [S III] 18.7 and 33.4 were detected in all the Starbursts and in ~80% of the Seyfert~2. Taking un…
We present CO observations of 9 ULIRGs at z~2 with S(24μm)>1mJy, previously confirmed with the mid-IR spectra in the Spitzer First Look Survey. All targets are required to have accurate redshifts from Keck/GEMINI near-IR spectra. Using the Plateau de Bure millimeter-wave Interferometer (PdBI) at IRAM, we detect CO J(3-2) [7 objects] or J(2-1) [1 object] line emission from 8 sources with integrated intensities Ic ~(5-9)sigma. The CO detected sources have a variety of mid-IR spectra, including strong PAH, deep silicate absorption and power-law continuum, implying that these molecular gas rich ob…
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission has been found in both starbursts and modestly starforming galaxies, but the relation between starforming activity and PAH luminosity is still a matter of debate. The different correlation degrees could be caused by the variety of optical and far-infrared sample selection criteria. In order to obtain a census of the typical properties of PAH emitting galaxies, we here study moderately distant galaxies which have been selected by their PAH emission. Combining the ISOCAM Parallel Survey at 6.7 micron with 2MASS we have colour-selected a sample of 12…
We investigate the emission properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in various metallicity environments with the Infrared Spectrograph on board Spitzer. Local giant HII regions are used as references as they enable access to the distinct interstellar medium components that contribute to the mid-infrared spectrum of star-forming galaxies: photodissociation regions (PDRs), photoionized gas, stellar clusters, and embedded regions. Three objects are considered, NGC3603 in the Milky Way, 30Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud, and N66 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. From the variation…
Ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) are interesting objects with dramatic properties. Many efforts have been made to understand the physics of their luminous infrared emission and evolutionary stages. However, a large ULIRG sample is still needed to study the properties of their central black holes (BHs), the BH-host galaxy relation, and their evolution. We identified 308 ULIRGs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6, and classified them into the NL ULIRGs (with only narrow emission lines) and the Type I ULIRGs (with broad emission lines). About 56% of ULIRGs in our total sampl…
On a galactic scale the 9.7um silicate emission is usually only seen in type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). They usually also display a flat emission continuum at ~5--8um and the absence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission bands. In contrast, starburst galaxies, luminous infrared (IR) galaxies (LIRGs), and ultraluminous IR galaxies (ULIRGs) exhibit a red 5--8um emission continuum, strong 10um and 18um silicate absorption features, and strong PAH emission bands. Here we report the detection of anomalous dust properties by Spitzer/Infrared Spectrograph in three galaxies (IRASF103…

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are carbon-based molecules that are ubiquitous in a variety of astrophysical objects and environments. In this work, we use JWST/MIRI MRS spectroscopy of three Seyferts to compare their nuclear PAH emission with that of star-forming regions. This study represents the first of its kind using sub-arcsecond angular resolution data of local luminous Seyferts (Lbol>10^44.46 erg/s) on a wide wavelength coverage (4.9-28.1 micron). We present an analysis of their nuclear PAH properties by comparing the observed ratios with PAH diagnostic model grids, derived fro…
This paper is the second in a series aimed at examining the gaseous environments of z$\le$0.3 quasars and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) as a function of AGN/host galaxy properties across the merger sequence. This second paper focuses on the Ly$α$ emission and O VI and N V absorption features, tracers of highly ionized gas outflows, in ULIRGs observed with HST/COS. Ly$α$ emission is detected in 15 out of 19 ULIRGs, and 12 of the 14 clear Ly$α$ detections show emission with blueshifted velocity centroids and/or wings. The equivalent widths of the Ly$α$ emission increase with increasin…
The UV bump is a broad absorption feature centered at 2175Å that is seen in the attenuation/extinction curve of some galaxies, but its origin is not well known. Here, we use a sample of 86 star-forming galaxies at z=1.7-2.7 with deep rest-frame UV spectroscopy from the MUSE HUDF Survey to study the connection between the strength of the observed UV 2175Å bump and the Spitzer/MIPS 24 micron photometry, which at the redshift range of our sample probes mid-IR polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission at ~6-8 micron. The sample has robust spectroscopic redshifts and consists of typical main-s…
