We solve the discrete Hirota equations (Kirillov-Reshetikhin Q-systems) for $A_r$, and their analogue for $D_r$, for the cases where the second variable ranges over either a finite set or over all integers. Until now only special solutions were known. We find all solutions for which no component vanishes, as required in the known applications. As an introduction we present the known solution where the second variable ranges over the natural numbers.
The recent progress in revealing classical integrable structures in quantum models solved by Bethe ansatz is reviewed. Fusion relations for eigenvalues of quantum transfer matrices can be written in the form of classical Hirota's bilinear difference equation. This equation is also known as the completely discretized version of the 2D Toda lattice. We explain how one obtains the specific quantum results by solving the classical equation. The auxiliary linear problem for the Hirota equation is shown to generalize Baxter's T-Q relation.
The hamiltonian formalism is developed for the sine-Gordon model on the space-time light-like lattice, first introduced by Hirota. The evolution operator is explicitely constructed in the quantum variant of the model, the integrability of the corresponding classical finite-dimensional system is established.
We derive a set of bilinear functional equations of Hirota type for the partition functions of the $sl(2)$ related integrable statistical models defined on a random lattice. These equations are obtained as deformations of the Hirota equations for the KP integrable hierarchy, which are satisfied by the partition function of the ensemble of planar graphs.
A brief non-technical review of the recent study of classical integrable structures in quantum integrable systems is given. It is explained how to identify the standard objects of quantum integrable systems (transfer matrices, Baxter's $Q$-operators, etc) with elements of classical non-linear integrable difference equations ($τ$-functions, Baker-Akhiezer functions, etc). The nested Bethe ansatz equations for $A_{k-1}$-type models emerge as discrete time equations of motion for zeros of classical $τ$-functions and Baker-Akhiezer functions. The connection with discrete time Ruijsenaars-Schneider…
We prove the dispersionless Hirota equations for the dispersionless Toda, dispersionless coupled modified KP and dispersionless KP hierarchies using an idea from classical complex analysis. We also prove that the Hirota equations characterize the tau functions for each of these hierarchies. As a result, we establish the links between the hierarchies.
We examine integrable $λ$-deformations of $SO(n+1)/SO(n)$ coset CFTs and their analytic continuations. We provide an interpretation of the deformation as a squashing of the corresponding coset $σ$-model's target space. We realise the $λ$-deformation for $n=5$ case as a solution to supergravity supported by non-vanishing five-form and dilaton. This interpolates between the coset CFT $SO(4,2)/SO(4,1)\times SO(6)/SO(5)$ constructed as a gauged WZW model and the non-Abelian T-dual of the $AdS_5\times S^5$ spacetime.
We describe how it is possible to introduce the interaction between superconformal fields of the same conformal dimensions. In the classical case such construction can be used to the construction of the Hirota - Satsuma equation. We construct supersymmetric Poisson tensor for such fields, which generates a new class of Hamiltonin systems. We found Lax representation for one of equation in this class by supersymmetrization Lax operator responsible for Hirota - Satsuma equation. Interestingly our supersymmetric equation is not reducible to classical Hirota - Satsuma equation. We show that our ge…
We review recent applications of the integrable discrete Hirota dynamics (Y-system) in the context of calculation of the planar AdS/CFT spectrum. We start from the description of solution of Hirota equations by the Backlund method where the requirement of analyticity results in the nested Bethe ansatz equations. Then we discuss applications of the Hirota dynamics for the analysis of the asymptotic limit of long operators in the AdS/CFT Y-system.
Recently, a set of thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations is proposed by Dorey, Pocklington and Tateo for unitary minimal models perturbed by ϕ_{1,2} or ϕ_{2,1} operator. We examine their results in view of the lattice analogues, dilute A_L models at regime 1 and 2. Taking M_{5,6}+ϕ_{1,2} and M_{3,4}+ϕ_{2,1} as the simplest examples, we will explicitly show that the conjectured TBA equations can be recovered from the lattice model in a scaling limit.
We review the integrable structure of the Dirichlet boundary problem in two dimensions. The solution to the Dirichlet boundary problem for simply-connected case is given through a quasiclassical tau-function, which satisfies the Hirota equations of the dispersionless Toda hierarchy, following from properties of the Dirichlet Green function. We also outline a possible generalization to the case of multiply-connected domains related to the multi-support solutions of matrix models.
It has been recently shown that the deformation of an arbitrary two-dimensional conformal field theory by the composite irrelevant operator $T \bar T$, built from the components of the stress tensor, is solvable; in particular, the finite-size spectrum of the deformed theory can be obtained from that of the original CFT through a universal formula. We study a similarly universal, Lorentz-breaking deformation of two-dimensional CFTs that posess a conserved $U(1)$ current, $J$. The deformation takes the schematic form $J \bar T$ and is interesting because it preserves an $SL(2,\mathbb{R}) \times…
We construct several new integrable systems corresponding to nonlocal versions of the Hirota equation, which is a particular example of higher order nonlinear Schrödinger equations. The integrability of the new models is established by providing their explicit forms of Lax pairs or zero curvature conditions. The two compatibility equations arising in this construction are found to be related to each other either by a parity transformation $\mathcal{P}$, by a time reversal $\mathcal{T}$ or a $\mathcal{PT}$-transformation possibly combined with a conjugation. We construct explicit multi-soliton …
We propose, using the example of the O(4) sigma model, a general method for solving integrable two dimensional relativistic sigma models in a finite size periodic box. Our starting point is the so-called Y-system, which is equivalent to the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations of Yang and Yang. It is derived from the Zamolodchikov scattering theory in the cross channel, for virtual particles along the non-compact direction of the space-time cylinder. The method is based on the integrable Hirota dynamics that follows from the Y-system. The outcome is a nonlinear integral equation for a single c…
Functional relation for commuting quantum transfer matrices of quantum integrable models is identified with classical Hirota's bilinear difference equation. This equation is equivalent to the completely discretized classical 2D Toda lattice with open boundaries. The standard objects of quantum integrable models are identified with elements of classical nonlinear integrable difference equation. In particular, elliptic solutions of Hirota's equation give complete set of eigenvalues of the quantum transfer matrices. Eigenvalues of Baxter's $Q$-operator are solutions to the auxiliary linear proble…
Motivated by recent work on quantum integrable models without U(1) symmetry, we show that the sl(2) Hirota equation admits a Lax representation with inhomogeneous terms. The compatibility of the auxiliary linear problem leads to a new consistent family of Hirota-like equations.
We discuss an interrelation between quantum integrable models and classical soliton equations with discretized time. It appeared that spectral characteristics of quantum integrable systems may be obtained from entirely classical set up. Namely, the eigenvalues of the quantum transfer matrix and the scattering $S$-matrix itself are identified with a certain $τ$-functions of the discrete Liouville equation. The Bethe ansatz equations are obtained as dynamics of zeros. For comparison we also present the Bethe ansatz equations for elliptic solutions of the classical discrete Sine-Gordon equation. …
We present a hermitian matrix chain representation of the general solution of the Hirota bilinear difference equation of three variables. In the large N limit this matrix model provides some explicit particular solutions of continuous differential Hirota equation of three variables. A relation of this representation to the eigenvalues of transfer matrices of 2D quantum integrable models is discussed.
We derive two new classes of integrable theories interpolating between exact CFT WZW or gauged WZW models and non-Abelian T-duals of principal chiral models or geometric coset models. They are naturally constructed by gauging symmetries of integrable models. Our analysis implies that non-Abelian T-duality preserves integrability and suggests a novel way to understand the global properties of the corresponding backgrounds.
We consider GL(K|M)-invariant integrable supersymmetric spin chains with twisted boundary conditions and elucidate the role of Backlund transformations in solving the difference Hirota equation for eigenvalues of their transfer matrices. The nested Bethe ansatz technique is shown to be equivalent to a chain of successive Backlund transformations "undressing" the original problem to a trivial one.
We present a tachyon field, which simply connects to the calculus of the tachyon condensation. The tachyon field acts on any bare boundary state: the Neumann or the Dirichlet state, and generates the boundary state suggested by S.P. de Alwis, which leads to the correct ratio between D-brane tensions. On the other hand we generalize the Hirota-Miwa equation to the case where there are two boundaries. We show that correlation functions made from only the integrand of the tachyon field satisfy the generalized Hirota-Miwa equation. Using the formulation based on this evidence, we suggest that the …
Kerr-Schild perturbations in General Relativity provide a fruitful way of constructing new exact solutions starting from known ones, elucidating also the structure of the spacetimes. We initiate such a study in the context of string theory and supergravity. Specifically, we explicitly construct Kerr-Schild perturbations of coset CFTs based on low dimensionality orthogonal groups. We show that these give rise to scale, but not Weyl, invariant integrable $σ$-models. We explicitly demonstrate that these models can also be derived from a particular limiting procedure of $λ$-deformed coset CFTs bas…
We construct a new class of integrable $σ$-models based on current algebra theories for a general semisimple group $G$ by utilizing a left-right asymmetric gauging. Their action can be thought of as the all-loop effective action of two independent WZW models for $G$ both at level $k$, perturbed by current bilinears mixing the different WZW models. A non-perturbative symmetry in the couplings parametric space is revealed. We perform the Hamiltonian analysis of the action and demonstrate integrability in several cases. We extend our construction to deformations of $G/H$ CFTs and show integrabili…
We explicitly construct families of integrable $σ$-model actions smoothly interpolating between exact CFTs. In the ultraviolet the theory is the direct product of two current algebras at levels $k_1$ and $k_2$. In the infrared and for the case of two deformation matrices the CFT involves a coset CFT, whereas for a single matrix deformation it is given by the ultraviolet direct product theories but at levels $k_1$ and $k_2-k_1$. For isotropic deformations we demonstrate integrability. In this case we also compute the exact beta-function for the deformation parameters using gravitational methods…
We investigate generic n-point correlation functions of conformal field theories (CFTs), with $T\bar{T}$ and $J\bar{T}$ deformations, in terms of the perturbative CFT approach. We systematically obtain the first order correction to the generic correlation functions of CFTs with $T\bar{T}$ or $J\bar{T}$ deformation. We compute the out-of-time ordered correlation function (OTOC) in the Ising model with $T\bar{T}$ or $J\bar{T}$ deformation, which confirms that these deformations do not change the integrable property up to the first order level.
We consider a system of two coupled KdV equations (one for left-movers, the other for right-movers) and investigate its ultra-relativistic and non-relativistic limits in the sense of BMS$_3$/GCA$_2$ symmetry. We show that there is no local ultra-relativistic limit of the system with positive energy, regardless of the coupling constants in the original relativistic Hamiltonian. By contrast, local non-relativistic limits with positive energy exist, provided there is a non-zero coupling between left- and right-movers. In these limits, the wave equations reduce to Hirota-Satsuma dynamics (of type …
A difference analogue of the logistic equation, which preserves integrability, is derived from Hirota's bilinear difference equation. The integrability of the map is shown to result from the large symmetry associated with the Bäcklund transformation of the KP hierarchy. We introduce a scheme which interpolates between this map and the standard logistic map and enables us to study integrable and nonintegrable systems on an equal basis. In particular we study the behavior of Julia set at the point where the nonintegrable map passes to the integrable map.
Using recently proposed method of discrete Hirota dynamics for integrable (1+1)D quantum field theories on a finite space circle of length L, we derive and test numerically a finite system of nonlinear integral equations for the exact spectrum of energies of SU(N)xSU(N) principal chiral field model as functions of m L, where m is the mass scale. We propose a determinant solution of the underlying Y-system, or Hirota equation, in terms of determinants (Wronskians) of NxN matrices parameterized by N-1 functions of the spectral parameter, with the known analytical properties at finite L. Although…
We show a surprising connection between known integrable Hamiltonian systems with quartic potential and the stationary flows of some coupled KdV systems related to fourth order Lax operators. In particular, we present a connection between the Hirota-Satsuma coupled KdV system and (a generalisation of) the $1:6:1$ integrable case quartic potential. A generalisation of the $1:6:8$ case is similarly related to a different (but gauge related) fourth order Lax operator. We exploit this connection to derive a Lax representation for each of these integrable systems. In this context a canonical transf…
We give a simple proof that the Neumann coefficients of surface states in Witten's SFT satisfy the Hirota equations for dispersionless KP hierarchy. In a similar way we show that the Neumann coefficients for the three string vertex in the same theory obey the Hirota equations of the dispersionless Toda Lattice hierarchy. We conjecture that the full (dispersive) Toda Lattice hierachy and, even more attractively a two--matrix model, may underlie open SFT.
We study the effective action for the integrable $λ$-deformation of the $G_{k_1} \times G_{k_2}/G_{k_1+k_2}$ coset CFTs. For unequal levels theses models do not fall into the general discussion of $λ$-deformations of CFTs corresponding to symmetric spaces and have many attractive features. We show that the perturbation is driven by parafermion bilinears and we revisit the derivation of their algebra. We uncover a non-trivial symmetry of these models parametric space, which has not encountered before in the literature. Using field theoretical methods and the effective action we compute the exac…
We show that eigenvalues of the family of Baxter Q-operators for supersymmetric integrable spin chains constructed with the gl(K|M)-invariant $R$-matrix obey the Hirota bilinear difference equation. The nested Bethe ansatz for super spin chains, with any choice of simple root system, is then treated as a discrete dynamical system for zeros of polynomial solutions to the Hirota equation. Our basic tool is a chain of Backlund transformations for the Hirota equation connecting quantum transfer matrices. This approach also provides a systematic way to derive the complete set of generalized Baxter …
The integrable structure, recently revealed in some classical problems of the theory of functions in one complex variable, is discussed. Given a simply connected domain in the complex plane, bounded by a simple analytic curve, we consider the conformal mapping problem, the Dirichlet boundary problem, and to the 2D inverse potential problem associated with the domain. A remarkable family of real-valued functionals on the space of such domains is constructed. Regarded as a function of infinitely many variables, which are properly defined moments of the domain, any functional from the family give…
We construct all higher order conserved charges from a general two-dimensional zero curvature condition using a Gardner transformation. Employing two of those charges in the definition of a Hamiltonian allows to view the Hirota equations as an integrable $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric extension of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We construct new degenerate multi-soliton solutions from Hirota's direct method as well as Darboux-Crum transformations based on Jordan states. We study the properties of these solutions, computing their asymptotic time-dependent displacements and also show that their sc…
We show that the CFT with symmetry group $G_{k_1}\times G_{k_2}\times \cdots \times G_{k_n}$ consisting of WZW models based on the same group $G$, but at arbitrary integer levels, admits an integrable deformation depending on $2(n-1)$ continuous parameters. We derive the all-loop effective action of the deformed theory and prove integrability. We also calculate the exact in the deformation parameters RG flow equations which can be put in a particularly simple compact form. This allows a full determination and classification of the fixed points of the RG flow, in particular those that are IR st…
A new relativistic integrable nonlinear model for real, Majorana type spinor fields in 1+1 dimensions, gauge equivalent to Papanicolau spin model, defined on the one sheet hyperboloid is introduced. By using the double numbers, the model is represented as hyperbolic complex valued relativistic massive Thirring type model. By Hirota's bilinear method, an exact one and two dissipative soliton solutions of this model are constructed. Calculation of first three integrals of motion for one dissipaton solution shows that the last one represents a particle-like nonlinear excitation, with relativistic…

A review of selected topics in Hirota's bilinear difference equation (HBDE) is given. This famous 3-dimensional difference equation is known to provide a canonical integrable discretization for most important types of soliton equations. Similarly to the continuous theory, HBDE is a member of an infinite hierarchy. The central point of our exposition is a discrete version of the zero curvature condition explicitly written in the form of discrete Zakharov-Shabat equations for M-operators realized as difference or pseudo-difference operators. A unified approach to various types of M-operators and…
By employing CFT techniques, we show how to compute in the context of λ-deformations of current algebras and coset CFTs the exact in the deformation parameters C-function for a wide class of integrable theories that interpolate between a UV and an IR point. We explicitly consider RG flows for integrable deformations of left-right asymmetric current algebras and coset CFTs. In all cases, the derived exact C-functions obey all the properties asserted by Zamolodchikov's c-theorem in two-dimensions.
Two-dimensional conformal field theories with just Virasoro symmetry are endowed with integrable structure. We review how to construct the integrable charges in a two-dimensional conformal field theory and how to relate them to the charges of quantum Sinh-Gordon theory when c>25. We then explicitly calculate the single charge characters in the large c limit for all charges and thereby reveal how their degeneracies grow within one module. This, in particular, allows us to approximate the characters in the limit of small chemical potential, which source the respective charges. The latter give us…
We derive the fusion hierarchy of functional equations for critical A-D-E lattice models related to, the sl(2) unitary minimal models, the parafermionic models and the supersymmetric models of conformal field theory, and deduce the related TBA functional equations. The derivation uses fusion projectors and applies in the presence of all known integrable boundary conditions on the torus and cylinder. The resulting TBA functional equations are_universal_ in the sense that they depend only on the Coxeter number of the A-D-E graph and are independent of the particular integrable boundary condition…
The microscopic theories of quantum gravity related to integrable lattice models can be constructed as special deformations of pure gravity. Each such deformation is defined by a second order differential operator acting on the coupling constants. As a consequence, the theories with matter fields satisfy a set of constraints inherited from the integrable structure of pure gravity. In particular, a set of bilinear functional equations for each theory with matter fields follows from the Hirota equations defining the KP (KdV) structure of pure gravity.
The construction of the master T-operator recently suggested in Alexandrov et al. (arXiv:1112.3310) is applied to integrable vertex models and associated quantum spin chains with trigonometric R-matrices. The master T-operator is a generating function for commuting transfer matrices of integrable vertex models depending on infinitely many parameters. At the same time it turns out to be the tau-function of an integrable hierarchy of classical soliton equations in the sense that it satisfies the the same bilinear Hirota equations. The class of solutions of the Hirota equations that correspond to…
A generalized Toda Lattice equation is considered. The associated linear problem (Lax representation) is found. For simple case N=3 the $τ$-function Hirota form is presented that allows to construct an exast solutions of the equations of the 1DGTL. The corresponding hierarchy and its relations with the nonlinear Schrodinger equation and Hersenberg ferromagnetic equation are discussed.
The reflection operators are the simplest examples of the non-local integrals of motion, which appear in many interesting problems in integrable CFT. For the so-called Fateev, quantum AKNS, paperclip and KdV integrable structures, they are built from the (chiral) reflection S-matrices for the Liouville and cigar CFTs. Here we give the full spectrum of the reflection operators associated with these integrable structures. We also obtained a relation between the reflection S-matrices of the cigar and Liouville CFTs. The results of this work are applicable for the description of the scaling behavi…
We study integrals of motion for Hirota bilinear difference equation that is satisfied by the eigenvalues of the transfer-matrix. The combinations of the eigenvalues of the transfer-matrix are found, which are integrals of motion for integrable discrete models for the $A_{k-1}$ algebra with zero and quasiperiodic boundary conditions. Discrete analogues of the equations of motion for the Bullough-Dodd model and non-Abelian generalization of Liouville model are obtained.
We study a general class of functionals providing an analytic handle on the conformal bootstrap equations in one dimension. We explicitly identify the extremal functionals, corresponding to theories saturating conformal bootstrap bounds, in two regimes. The first corresponds to functionals that annihilate the generalized free fermion spectrum. In this case, we analytically find both OPE and gap maximization functionals proving the extremality of the generalized free fermion solution to crossing. Secondly, we consider a scaling limit where all conformal dimensions become large, equivalent to th…
We discuss the origin of the associativity (WDVV) equations in the context of quasiclassical or Whitham hierarchies. The associativity equations are shown to be encoded in the dispersionless limit of the Hirota equations for KP and Toda hierarchies. We show, therefore, that any tau-function of dispersionless KP or Toda hierarchy provides a solution to associativity equations. In general, they depend on infinitely many variables. We also discuss the particular solution to the dispersionless Toda hierarchy that describes conformal mappings and construct a family of new solutions to the WDVV equa…
We study the notion of strong integrability for classically integrable $λ$-deformed CFTs and coset CFTs. To achieve this goal we employ the Poisson brackets of the spatial Lax matrix which we prove that it assumes the Maillet $r/s$-matrix algebra. As a consequence the system in question are integrable in the strong sense. Furthermore, we show that the derived Maillet $r/s$-matrix algebras can be realized in terms of twist functions, at the poles of which we recover the underlying symmetry algebras.
We propose integrable discretizations of derivative nonlinear Schroedinger (DNLS) equations such as the Kaup-Newell equation, the Chen-Lee-Liu equation and the Gerdjikov-Ivanov equation by constructing Lax pairs. The discrete DNLS systems admit the reduction of complex conjugation between two dependent variables and possess bi-Hamiltonian structure. Through transformations of variables and reductions, we obtain novel integrable discretizations of the nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS), modified KdV (mKdV), mixed NLS, matrix NLS, matrix KdV, matrix mKdV, coupled NLS, coupled Hirota, coupled Sasa-Sats…
This paper begins investigation of the concept of ``generalized $τ$-function'', defined as a generating function of all the matrix elements of a group element $g \in G$ in a given highest-weight representation of a universal enveloping algebra ${\cal G}$. In the generic situation, the time-variables correspond to the elements of maximal nilpotent subalgebras rather than Cartanian elements. Moreover, in the case of quantum groups such $τ$-``functions'' are not $c$-numbers but take their values in non-commutative algebras (of functions on the quantum group $G$). Despite all these differences fro…
In a recent paper it was shown that the response of an integrable QFT under variation of the Unruh temperature can be computed from a S-matrix preserving deformation of the form factor approach. We give explicit expressions for the deformed two-particle formfactors for various integrable models: The Sine-Gordon and SU(2) Thirring model, several perturbed minimal CFTs and the real coupling affine Toda series. A uniform pattern is found to emerge when both the S-matrix and the deformed form factors are expressed in terms Barnes' multi-periodic functions.
Recently a variety of nonlocal integrable systems has been introduced that besides fields located at particlar space-time points simultaneously also contain fields that are located at different, but symmetrically related, points. Here we investigate different types of soliton solutions with regard to their stability against linear pertubations obtained for the nonlocal version of the Hirota/nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the so-called Alice and Bob versions of the Korteweg-de Vries and Bousinesq equations. We encounter different types of scenarios: Solition solutions that are linearly stab…
We show that the set of transfer matrices of an arbitrary fusion type for an integrable quantum model obey these bilinear functional relations, which are identified with an integrable dynamical system on a Grassmann manifold (higher Hirota equation). The bilinear relations were previously known for a particular class of transfer matrices corresponding to rectangular Young diagrams. We extend this result for general Young diagrams. A general solution of the bilinear equations is presented.
In this paper the relation between the cluster integrable systems and $q$-difference equations is extended beyond the Painlevé case. We consider the class of hyperelliptic curves when the Newton polygons contain only four boundary points. The corresponding cluster integrable Toda systems are presented, and their discrete automorphisms are identified with certain reductions of the Hirota difference equation. We also construct non-autonomous versions of these equations and find that their solutions are expressed in terms of 5d Nekrasov functions with the Chern-Simons contributions, while in the …
