We propose, using the example of the O(4) sigma model, a general method for solving integrable two dimensional relativistic sigma models in a finite size periodic box. Our starting point is the so-called Y-system, which is equivalent to the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations of Yang and Yang. It is derived from the Zamolodchikov scattering theory in the cross channel, for virtual particles along the non-compact direction of the space-time cylinder. The method is based on the integrable Hirota dynamics that follows from the Y-system. The outcome is a nonlinear integral equation for a single complex function, valid for an arbitrary quantum state and accompanied by the finite size analogue of Bethe equations. It is close in spirit to the Destri-deVega (DdV) equation. We present the numerical data for the energy of various states as a function of the size, and derive the general Luscher-type formulas for the finite size corrections. We also re-derive by our method the DdV equation for the SU(2) chiral Gross-Neveu model.
Using recently proposed method of discrete Hirota dynamics for integrable (1+1)D quantum field theories on a finite space circle of length L, we derive and test numerically a finite system of nonlinear integral equations for the exact spectrum of energies of SU(N)xSU(N) principal chiral field model as functions of m L, where m is the mass scale. We propose a determinant solution of the underlying Y-system, or Hirota equation, in terms of determinants (Wronskians) of NxN matrices parameterized by N-1 functions of the spectral parameter, with the known analytical properties at finite L. Although…
We study world-volume effective theories of five-branes in type II string theories. We determine the bosonic zero-modes of the NS5-brane, the Kaluza-Klein monopole, the exotic Q5-, R5-branes and a space-filling brane, by direct calculations within the formalism of double field theory (DFT). We show that these zero-modes are Nambu-Goldstone modes associated with the spontaneously broken gauge symmetries in DFT. They are organized into the bosonic part of the six-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = (1,1)$ vector and the $\mathcal{N} = (2,0)$ tensor multiplets. Among other things, we examine the locally n…
We compute the Zamolodchikov volumes of some moduli spaces of conformal field theories with target spaces K3, T4, and their symmetric products. As an application we argue that sequences of conformal field theories, built from products of such symmetric products, almost never have a holographic dual with weakly coupled gravity.
We study the volume prescription of the holographic subregion complexity in a holographic 5 dimensional model consisting of Einstein gravity coupled to a scalar field with a non-trivial potential. The dual 4 dimensional gauge theory is not conformal and exhibits a RG flow between two different fixed points. In both zero and finite temperature we show that the holographic subregion complexity can be used as a measure of non-conformality of the model. This quantity exhibits also a monotonic behaviour in terms of the size of the entangling region, like the behaviour of the entanglement entropy in…
The vacuum expectation values of conserved currents play an essential role in the generalized hydrodynamics of integrable quantum field theories. We use analytic continuation to extend these results for the excited state expectation values in a finite volume. Our formulas are valid for diagonally scattering theories and incorporate all finite size corrections.
We study the moduli space volume of BPS vortices in quiver gauge theories on compact Riemann surfaces. The existence of BPS vortices imposes constraints on the quiver gauge theories. We show that the moduli space volume is given by a vev of a suitable cohomological operator (volume operator) in a supersymmetric quiver gauge theory, where BPS equations of the vortices are embedded. In the supersymmetric gauge theory, the moduli space volume is exactly evaluated as a contour integral by using the localization. Graph theory is useful to construct the supersymmetric quiver gauge theory and to deri…
We construct world-volume effective actions of exotic $5^2_2$-branes in type IIA and IIB string theories. The effective actions are given in fully space-time covariant forms with two Killing vectors associated with background isometries. The effective theories are governed by the six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ tensor multiplet and $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ vector multiplet, respectively. Performing the S-duality transformation to the $5^2_2$-brane effective action in type IIB string theory, we also work out the world-volume action of the $5^2_3$-brane. We discuss some additional issues relevant…
In this paper we demonstrate, that the light-cone lattice approach for the Massive-Thirring (sine-Gordon) model, through the quantum inverse scattering method, admits an appropriate framework for computing the finite volume form-factors of local operators of the model. In this work we compute the finite volume diagonal matrix elements of the $U(1)$ conserved current in the pure soliton sector of the theory. Based on the systematic large volume expansion of our results, we conjecture an exact expression for the finite volume expectation values of local operators in pure soliton states. At large…
In this paper we present our results concerning the dependence of Wilson loop expectation values on the size of the lattice and the rank of the SU(N) gauge group. This allows to test the claims about volume independence in the large N limit, and the crucial dependence on boundary conditions. Our highly precise results provide strong support for the validity of the twisted reduction mechanism and the TEK model, provided the fluxes are chosen within the appropriate domain.
The spectrum of SU(N) gauge theories in finite volume
The tensor renormalization group method is a promising approach to lattice field theories, which is free from the sign problem unlike standard Monte Carlo methods. One of the remaining issues is the application to gauge theories, which is so far limited to U(1) and SU(2) gauge groups. In the case of higher rank, it becomes highly nontrivial to restrict the number of representations in the character expansion to be used in constructing the fundamental tensor. We propose a practical strategy to accomplish this and demonstrate it in 2D U($N$) and SU($N$) gauge theories, which are exactly solvable…
We present a concise description of the basic features of gravity-matter models based on the formalism of non-canonical spacetime volume-forms in its two versions: the method of non-Riemannian volume-forms (metric-independent covariant volume elements) and the dynamical spacetime formalism. Among the principal outcomes we briefly discuss: (i) quintessential universe evolution with a gravity-"inflaton"-assisted suppression in the "early" universe and, respectively, dynamical generation in the "late" universe of Higgs spontaneous electroweak gauge symmetry breaking; (ii) unified description of d…
In this paper we study the topological susceptibility of two-dimensional $U(N)$ gauge theories. We provide explicit expressions for the partition function and the topological susceptibility at finite lattice spacing and finite volume. We then examine the particularly simple case of the abelian $U(1)$ theory, the continuum limit, the infinite volume limit, and we finally discuss the large $N$ limit of our results.
We demonstrate that the geometric volume of a soliton coincides with the thermodynamical volume also for field theories with higher-dimensional vacuum manifolds (e.g., for gauged scalar field theories supporting vortices or monopoles). We apply this observation to understand Bradlow type bounds for general abelian gauge theories supporting vortices. In the case of SDiff BPS models (being examples of perfect fluid models) we show that the geometric "volume" (area) of the vortex, which is base-space independent, is exactly equal to the Bradlow volume (a minimal volume for which a BPS soliton sol…
