A novel method is presented for the beam shaping of far field intensity distributions of coherently combined fiber arrays. The fibers are arranged uniformly on the perimeter of a circle, and the linearly polarized beams of equal shape are superimposed such that the far field pattern represents an effective radially polarized vector beam, or discrete cylindrical vector (DCV) beam. The DCV beam is produced by three or more beams that each individually have a varying polarization vector. The beams are appropriately distributed in the near field such that the far field intensity distribution has a central null. This result is in contrast to the situation of parallel linearly polarized beams, where the intensity peaks on axis.
Optical fiber with high numerical aperture (NA) can efficiently relieve the degeneracy of higher order linearly polarized modes. The degeneracy relief is investigated in two types of high NA fibers, i.e., low index cladding fiber and high-index-core fiber. A naked core fiber, as with low index cladding, can be used theoretically to generate the orbital angular momentum mode (OAMM) HE21 and the cylindrically symmetric modes (CSMs) TM01 and TE01. A high index core fiber incorporated with high contrast index structure can be used similarly to obtain OAMM HE31. The generation of both CSMs and OAMM…
We experimentally demonstrate a linear-cavity all-fiber passively Q-switching cylindrical vector beam (CVB) laser operating in high-order mode. This CVB fiber laser operates without any mode converter which always leads to high insertion loss, and it can realize high efficiency. In this fiber laser, the stable Q-switching pulse is achieved with a slope efficiency of 39%. By properly adjusting the polarization controllers, radially polarized and azimuthally polarized beams can be obtained. Our work proves the feasibility of achieving the stable Q-switching CVB pulse with high-order mode directl…
Radiative emission from a semi-infinite unflanged circular cylindrical dielectric waveguide or optical fiber is studied for the case of axisymmetric modes of TM polarization on the basis of an iterative scheme. The first step of the scheme leads to approximate values for the reflection coefficients and the electromagnetic fields inside and outside the waveguide. In a numerical example the reflection back into the waveguide is appreciable. Correspondingly the radiation pattern of the outgoing radiation differs appreciably from the lowest order approximation in which reflection is neglected.
We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that a nanoscale hollow channel placed centrally in the solid glass core of a photonic crystal fiber strongly enhances the cylindrical birefringence (the modal index difference between radially and azimuthally polarized modes). Furthermore, it causes a large split in group velocity and group velocity dispersion. We show analytically that all three parameters can be varied over a wide range by tuning the diameters of the nanobore and the core.
We consider a plane periodical array of parallel cylindrical waveguides with evanescent coupling between them. A new method for calculating the isofrequency curves based on the multiple Mie scattering formalism (MMSF) is developed. This method is compared with the phenomenological model. The derivation of the phenomenological model by means of the MMSF is performed. The formulae for calculation of parameters of the phenomenological model are derived, such as propagation constants and coupling constants.
Cylindrical vector (CV) beams are a set of transverse spatial modes that exhibit a cylindrically symmetric intensity profile and a variable polarization about the beam axis. They are composed of a non-separable superposition of orbital and spin angular momentum. Critically, CV beams are also the eigenmodes of optical fiber and, as such, are of wide-spread practical importance in photonics and have the potential to increase communications bandwidth through spatial multiplexing. Here, we derive the coupled amplitude equations that describe the four-wave mixing (FWM) of CV beams in optical fibers…
We propose an efficient method to determine the effective refractive index of step-index optical fibers from the visible to the mid-IR and thus allowing to infer their dispersive properties over a broad spectral range. The validity of the method, based on the writing of an array of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) with known periods using the fs scanning phase mask technique, is first confirmed with a standard silica fiber, then applied to various fluoride glass fibers to determine their effective refractive index and dispersion over more than three octaves, i.e. from 550 to 4800 nm.
We experimentally demonstrate a prototype of a cylindrical enlarging lens capable of enhancing and restoring evanescent fields. The enabling phenomenon is the resonant excitation of coupled surface modes in a system of two cylindrical arrays of small resonant particles. As was shown in [J. Appl. Phys. 96, 1293 (2004)], this phenomenon in planar arrays can be used in electromagnetic near-field imaging. Here, we use a similar structure in a cylindrically symmetric configuration, which gives us a possibility to obtain an enlarged near-field image.
Configurations for efficient free space coherent addition of four separate fiber lasers arranged in two dimensional array are presented. They include compact and robust interferometric combiners that can be inserted either inside or outside the cavity of the combined lasers system. The results reveal that over 85% combining efficiency can be obtained.
We generalize the projection to orthogonal function basis (including polarization modes) method for nonlinear (Kerr medium) fiber and use this method in a case of two-mode waveguide. We consider orthogonal Bessel functions basis that fit the choice of cylindrical geometry of a fiber. The coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations (CNLS) are derived. Analytic expressions and numerical results for coupling coefficients are given; the fiber parameters dependence is illustrated by plots.
Since the advent of optical orbital angular momentum (OAM), advances in the generation and manipulation of OAM beams have continuously impacted on intriguing applications including optical communication, optical tweezers, and remote sensing. To realize the generation of high-power and fast switchable OAM beams, coherent combining of fiber lasers offers a promising way. Here in this contribution, we comprehensively investigate the coherent fiber laser array system for structuring OAM beams in terms of the design considerations and performance analysis. The performance metric and evaluation meth…
Yes, it is possible to phase lock 25 fiber lasers but only for a short time. Our experiments on passively phase locking two-dimensional arrays of coupled fiber lasers reveal that the average phase locking level of 25 lasers is low ($20%-30%$) but can exceed 90% on rare instantaneous events. The average phase locking level was found to decrease for larger number of lasers in the array and increase with the connectivity of the array.
We used Geometric Algebra to compute the paths of skew rays in a cylindrical, step-index multimode optical fiber. To do this, we used the vector addition form for the law of propagation, the exponential of an imaginary vector form for the law of refraction, and the juxtaposed vector product form for the law of reflection. In particular, the exponential forms of the vector rotations enables us to take advantage of the addition or subtraction of exponential arguments of two rotated vectors in the derivation of the ray tracing invariants in cylindrical and spherical coordinates. We showed that th…
The stochastic parallel gradient descent (SPGD) algorithm is usually employed as the control strategy for phase-locking in fiber laser phased array systems. However, the convergence speed of the SPGD algorithm will slow down as the number of array elements increases. To improve the control bandwidth, the convolutional neural network is introduced to quickly calculate the initial piston aberration in a single step. In addition, the irrationality of the commonly used Mean Square Error (MSE) evaluation function in existing convolutional neural networks is analyzed. A new evaluation function NPCD …
We design a plasmonic fiber waveguide (PFW) composed of coaxial cylindrical metal-dielectric multilayers in nanoscale, and constitute the corresponding dynamical equations describing the modes of propagation in the PFW with the Kerr nonlinearity in the dielectric layers. The physics is connected to the discrete matrix nonlinear Schrödinger equations, from which the highly confined ring-like solitons in scale of subwavelength are found both for the visible light and the near-infrared light in the self-defocusing condition. Moreover, the confinement could be further improved when increasing the …
Optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) is studied for the confined geometry of a circular cylindrical waveguide or optical fiber. A model situation of high symmetry is considered where the material with nonlinear susceptibility is isotropic and distributed in radially symmetric manner about the axis. In addition it is assumed that the material of high second-order nonlinearity consists of a thin circular layer, with periodic variation in the axial direction - similar to a usual quasi-phasematched configuration. One can optimize the efficiency of SHG by choosing the period of the array such t…
The saturable absorption characteristics of two-, three-, and five-core one-dimensional fiber coupler arrays and the seven-core hexagonal fiber coupler array are investigated. It is shown that the performance of all these saturable absorbers are comparable and not much is gained, if anything, by going from a two-core nonlinear coupler geometry to a higher number of cores. This observation is supported by the similarity of the saturable absorption curves, as well as comparable pulse characteristics obtained from the simulation of a generic mode-locked fiber laser cavity.
This paper presents theory and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) calculations for a single and arrays of sub-wavelength cylindrical holes in metallic films presenting large transmission. These calculations are in excellent agreement with experimental measurements. This effect has to be understood in terms of the properties exhibited by the dielectric constant of metals which cannot be treated as ideal metals for the purpose of transmission and diffraction of light. We discuss the cases of well-differentiated metals silver and tungsten. It is found that the effect of surface plasmons or othe…
We theoretically study the problem of detecting dipole radiation in an optical system of high numerical aperture in which the detector is sensitive to \textit{field amplitude}. In particular, we model the phase sensitive detector as a single-mode cylindrical optical fiber. We find that the maximum in collection efficiency of the dipole radiation does not coincide with the optimum resolution for the light gathering instrument. The calculated results are important for analyzing fiber-based confocal microscope performance in fluorescence and spectroscopic studies of single molecules and/or quantu…
Multicore optical fibers and ribbons based on fiber arrays allow for massively parallel transmission of signals via spatially separated channels, thereby offering attractive bandwidth scaling with linearly increasing technical effort. However, low-loss coupling of light between fiber arrays or multicore fibers and standard linear arrays of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL) or photodiodes (PD) still represents a challenge. In this paper, we demonstrate that 3D-printed facet-attached microlenses (FaML) offer an attractive path for connecting multimode fiber arrays as well as indivi…
We investigate light propagation in randomly spaced fiber gratings in a single mode fiber, and demonstrate the localization effect. Localization of light in random media resembles that of electrons in disordered solids, resulting from a subtle wave interference formation. We measured the light transmission after each additional grating fabrication and found an exponential decay that follows the localization theory. An important feature of the random array is its similarity to ordered gratings in the transmission and reflection behavior at the long array regime. Besides the basic interest in lo…
This report concerns with the theoretical studies of SPP Bloch waves in arrays of cylindrical holes. Most analytical solutions are simplified, approximate and fitted, thus leading to wrong design parameters. A rigorous analytical solution that can accurately predict the desired dimensions associated with hole arrays is complex to derive. Finite element analysis (FEA), on the other hand, offers extensive capabilities for modelling and simulating the response of periodic structures such as that of an infinite array of holes. In this chapter, a square array of cylindrical holes is modelled numeri…
We demonstrate that crossed arrays of optical fibers support the double-discrete linear and nonlinear propagation of light beams, in which not only the transverse coordinate (the fiber's number) is discrete, but also the longitudinal (propagation) coordinate, i.e., the number of the fiber-crossing site, is effectively discrete too. In the linear limit, this transmission regime features double-discrete self-collimation. The nonlinear fishnet arrays with both focusing and defocusing nonlinearities give rise to double-discrete spatial solitons. Solitons bifurcating from two different branches of …
Conventional optical components have been proposed to realize high-quality line focusing with uniform intensity distribution such as cylindrical lenses, segmented wedge-arrays, or a combination of prisms and spherical mirrors. However, numerous factors such as the manufacturing tolerances of conventional lenses or the need for precise alignment of the lenses cause wavefront aberrations that impact the performance of optical systems. These aforementioned limitations of conventional optical components affect the uniformity of the intensity distribution. Here, we numerically and experimentally de…
Spin and orbital angular momenta (AM) of light are well studied for free-space electromagnetic fields, even nonparaxial. One of the important applications of these concepts is the information transfer using AM modes, often via optical fibers and other guiding systems. However, the self-consistent description of the spin and orbital AM of light in optical media (including dispersive and metallic cases) was provided only recently [K.Y. Bliokh et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 073901 (2017)]. Here we present the first accurate calculations, both analytical and numerical, of the spin and orbital AM, a…
We propose the use of a silicon-core optical fiber for terahertz (THz) waveguide applications. Finite-difference time-domain simulations have been performed based on a cylindrical waveguide with a silicon core and silica cladding. High-resistivity silicon has a flat dispersion over a 0.1 - 3 THz range, making it viable for propagation of tunable narrowband CW THz and possibly broadband picosecond pules of THz radiation. Simulations show the propagation dynamics and the integrated intensity, from which transverse mode profiles and absorption lengths are extraced. It is found that for 140 - 250 …
Internal physical structure can drastically modify the properties of waveguides: photonic crystal fibers are able to confine light inside a hollow air core by Bragg scattering from a periodic array of holes, while metamaterial loaded waveguides for microwaves can support propagation at frequencies well below cutoff. Anisotropic metamaterials assembled into cylindrically symmetric geometries constitute light-guiding structures that support new kinds of exotic modes. A microtube of anodized nanoporous alumina, with nanopores radially emanating from the inner wall to the outer surface, is a manif…
Slow light with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the core of cylindrical waveguide (CW) for an optical fiber system containing three-level atoms is investigated. The CW modes are treated in the weakly guiding approximation which renders the analysis into manageable form. The transparency window and permittivity profile of the waveguide due to the strong pump field in the EIT scheme is calculated. For a specific permittivity profile of the waveguide due to EIT, the propagation constant of the weak signal field and spatial shape of fundamental guided mode are calculated by solvi…
We report a compact, scalable, and high-performance superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) array by using a multichannel optical fiber array-coupled configuration. For single pixels with an active area of 18 um in diameter and illuminated at the telecom wavelength of 1550 nm, we achieved a pixel yield of 13/16 on one chip, an average system detection efficiency of 69% at a dark count rate of 160 cps, a minimum timing jitter of 74 ps, and a maximum count rate of ~40 Mcps. The optical crosstalk coefficient between adjacent channels is better than -60 dB. The performance of the f…
We create hybrid topological-photonic localisation of light by introducing concepts from the field of topological matter to that of photonic crystal fiber arrays. S-polarized obliquely propagating electromagnetic waves are guided by hexagonal, and square, lattice topological systems along an array of infinitely conducting fibers. The theory utilises perfectly periodic arrays that, in frequency space, have gapped Dirac cones producing band gaps demarcated by pronounced valleys locally imbued with a nonzero local topological quantity. These broken symmetry-induced stop-bands allow for localised …
We numerically demonstrate the formation of the spatiotemporal version of the so-called diffractive resonant radiation generated in waveguide arrays with Kerr nonlinearity when a long pulse is launched into the system. The phase matching condition for the diffractive resonant radiation that we have found earlier for CW beams also works well in the spatiotemporal case. By introducing a linear potential, one can introduce a continuous shift of the central wavenumber of a linear pulse, whereas in the nonlinear case one can demonstrate that the soliton self-wavenumber shift can be compensated by t…
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a fiber spectrum analyzer based on a planar waveguide chip butt-coupled with an input fiber and aligned to a standard camera without any free-space optical elements. The chip consists of a single-mode waveguide to connect with the fiber, a beam broadening area, and a waveguide array in which the lengths of the waveguides are designed for both wavelength separation and beam focusing. The facet of the chip is diced open so that the outputs of the array form a near-field emitter. The far field are calculated by the Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction integral…
The photonic crystal fibers (PCF) or air-silica microstructured fibers consist of a periodic array of dielectric transverse. By introducing a defect in this structure, it is possible to guide the light by a photonic bandgap effect, whose properties are different fundamentally from the guide by total internal reflection that takes place in conventional fibers. PCF with two cores have significant potential, and this is one of the main motivations witches led us to approach this theme in this article. Analysis of the inter-core coupling was also necessary to study the problem of crosstalk. Their …
Bloch oscillations of spatio-temporal light wave packets in arrays of nonlinear fibers with high-order dispersion are studied. The light wave experiences discrete spatial diffraction along the waveguide array coordinate together with continuous temporal dispersion including higher order terms. When a gradient in the waveguide light confinement strength is considered, the wave packet features robust long-lived Bloch oscillations with temporal and spatial spreading in the presence of a Kerr nonlinearity. The effect of the spatial Bloch oscillations on the emission of the dispersive radiation by …

Light's orbital angular momentum (OAM) is a conserved quantity in cylindrically symmetric media; however, it is easily destroyed by free-space turbulence or fiber bends, because anisotropic perturbations impart angular momentum. We observe the conservation of OAM even in the presence of strong bend perturbations, with fibers featuring air cores that appropriately sculpt the modal density of states. In analogy to the classical reasoning for the enhanced stability of spinning tops with increasing angular velocity, these states' lifetimes with OAM magnitude. Consequently, contrary to convention w…
Graded index microstructured polymer optical fiber incorporating a specially designed air-hole array featuring variable air-hole diameters and inter-hole separation is proposed, fabricated and characterized in view of the fiber potential applications in low-loss, low-dispersion terahertz guidance. The proposed fiber features simultaneously low chromatic and intermodal dispersions, as well as low loss in the terahertz spectral range. We then experimentally demonstrate that proposed fibers exhibit smaller pulse distortion, larger bandwidth and more reliable excitation when compared to the porous…
We demonstrate the use of deep learning for fast spectral deconstruction of speckle patterns. The artificial neural network can be effectively trained using numerically constructed multispectral datasets taken from a measured spectral transmission matrix. Optimized neural networks trained on these datasets achieve reliable reconstruction of both discrete and continuous spectra from a monochromatic camera image. Deep learning is compared to analytical inversion methods as well as to a compressive sensing algorithm and shows favourable characteristics both in the oversampling and in the sparse u…
Optical fibers containing multiple cores are widely regarded as the leading solution to the optical communications capacity crunch. The most prevalent paradigm for the design and employment of multi-core fibers relies on the suppression of direct coupling of optical power among cores. The cores, however, remain mechanically coupled. Inter-core, opto-mechanical cross-talk, among cores that are otherwise optically isolated from one another, is shown in this work for the first time. Light in one core stimulates guided acoustic modes of the entire fiber cladding. These modes, in turn, induce refra…
Theory of monochromatic wave field amplification in a waveguide array based on expansion of the wave field in terms of guided array modes is developed. Equations for the expansion coefficients include cross-modal gain, which completely changes behavior of the amplified wave field. Analysis of two-mode amplification reveals new unusual features in characteristics of two-mode amplifier. Instead of unlimited growth of both modes for incoherent fields, one of the modes grows with no limit and suppresses the lower-power mode. Effects associated with the cross-modal gain are illustrated analytically…
We present a proof of concept compact diffraction limited high-resolution fiber-fed spectrograph by using a 2D multicore array input. This high resolution spectrograph is fed by a 2D pseudo-slit, the Photonic TIGER, a hexagonal array of near-diffraction limited single-mode cores. We study the feasibility of this new platform related to the core array separation and rotation with respect to the dispersion axis. A 7 core compact Photonic TIGER fiber-fed spectrograph with a resolving power of around R~31000 and 8 nm bandwidth in the IR centered on 1550 nm is demonstrated. We also describe possibl…
In this letter, we perform numerical and experimental studies of the optical response of an original configuration based on enhanced transmission through guided mode based metamaterials. The proposed structure is inspired by annular aperture array (AAA) where the cylindrical symmetry is broken in order to acquire polarization-sensitive metasurfaces. The experimental results, which are in good agreement with numerical simulations, demonstrate that the structure acts as a polarizer exhibiting an extinction ratio of (15:1) with a maximum transmission coefficient up to 85% which is more efficient …
We study the optical force between two coupled parallel identical nanofibers using the rigorous array mode theory. We show that the forces of the even array modes are attractive, while the forces of the odd array modes are repulsive. We examine the dependencies of the optical forces on the array mode type, the fiber radius, the light wavelength, and the fiber separation distance. We show that, for a given power and a given separation distance, the absolute value of the force achieves a peak when the fiber radius and the light wavelength are appropriate.
Wave propagation on the surface of cylinders exhibits interferometric self imaging, much like the Talbot effect in the near-field diffraction at periodic gratings. We report the experimental observation of the cylindrical Talbot carpet in weakly-guiding ring-core fibers for classical light fields. We further show that the ring-core fiber acts as a high-order optical beamsplitter for single photons, whose output can be controlled by the relative phase between the input light fields. By also demonstrating high-quality two-photon interference between indistinguishable photons sent into the ring-c…
