Electrically charged fluids with pressure in Newtonian gravitation and general relativity in d spacetime dimensions: theorems and results for Weyl type systems
Previous theorems concerning Weyl type systems, including Majumdar-Papapetrou systems, are generalized in two ways, namely, we take these theorems into d spacetime dimensions (${\rm d}\geq4$), and we also consider the very interesting Weyl-Guilfoyle systems, i.e., general relativistic charged fluids with nonzero pressure. In particular within Newton-Coulomb theory of charged gravitating fluids, a theorem by Bonnor (1980) in three-dimensional space is generalized to arbitrary $({\rm d}-1)>3$ space dimensions. Then, we prove a new theorem for charged gravitating fluid systems in which we find the condition that the charge density and the matter density should obey. Within general relativity coupled to charged dust fluids, a theorem by De and Raychaudhuri (1968) in four-dimensional spacetimes in rendered into arbitrary ${\rm d}>4$ dimensions. Then a theorem, new in ${\rm d}=4$ and ${\rm d}>4$ dimensions, for Weyl-Guilfoyle systems, is stated and proved, in which we find the condition that the charge density, the matter density, the pressure, and the electromagnetic energy density should obey. This theorem comprises, as particular cases, a theorem by Gautreau and Hoffman (1973) and results in four dimensions by Guilfoyle (1999). Upon connection of an interior charged solution to an exterior Tangherlini solution (i.e., a Reissner-Nordström solution in d-dimensions), one is able to give a general definition for gravitational mass for this kind of relativistic systems and find a mass relation with the several quantities of the interior solution. It is also shown that for sources of finite extent the mass is identical to the Tolman mass.
The gravitational Poynting vector provides a mechanism for the transfer of gravitational energy to a system of falling objects. In the following we will show that the gravitational poynting vector together with the electromagnetic Poynting vector provides a mechanism to explain how massive electrically charged bodies acquire kinetic energy during a free fall. We will demontrate that falling electrically charged masses violate the Galilean law of universal free fall. An experiment is suggested to confirm or not the predicted phenomena.
This paper aims to investigate the astrophysical applicability of the electrically and magnetically charged black hole solutions obtained in a model of nonlinear electrodynamics proposed by Kruglov (Ann. Phys. Berlin 2017, 529, 170073). Theoretical calculations of the bending angles and gravitational redshifts from the theory of general relativity are studied numerically by using the stellar data of charged compact objects and a hypothetical quark star model. Calculations have revealed that although the theoretical outcomes differ from the linear Maxwell case, the plotted bending angles coinci…
We try to lay down the foundations of a Newtonian theory where inertia and gravitational fields appear in a unified way aiming to reach a better understanding of the general relativistic theory. We also formulate a kind of equivalence principle for this generalized Newtonian theory. Finally we find the non-relativistic limit of the Einstein's equations for the space--time metric derived from the Newtonian theory.
In this paper, I determine the electrogravitational field produced by a charged mass point according to the Relativistic Theory of Gravitation. The Causality Principle in the Relativistic Theory of Gravitation will play a very important part in finding this field. The analytical form and the domain of definition, i.e the gravitational radius of the obtained solution, differ from that given by Einstein's General Relativity Theory.
In this review we present the theoretical background for treating General Relativity as an effective field theory and focus on the concrete results of such a treatment. As a result we present the calculations of the low-energy leading gravitational corrections to the Newtonian potential between two sources.
We derive the equations for the odd and even parity perturbations of coupled electromagnetic and gravitational fields of a black hole with an electric charge within the context of general nonlinear electrodynamics. The Lagrangian density is a generic function of the Lorentz invariant scalar quantities of the electromagnetic fields. We include the Hodge dual of the electromagnetic field tensor and the cosmological constant in our calculations. For each type of parity, we reduce the system of Einstein field equations coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics to two coupled Schrödinger-type wave equat…
For a modified Randall-Sundrum model [Phys. Rev. D 88 (2013) 025048], the graviton equations are derived and the mass spectrum found. The latter includes a massless graviton and a continuum mass with a gap. There is no negative mass-squared in the spectrum, so the model is stable. The gravitational Newtonian limit is obtained with an exponentially suppressed modification from extra dimension.
Considering electrically charged test particles, we continue our study of the exterior dynamics of a charged Weyl black hole which has been previously investigated regarding the motion of mass-less and (neutral) massive particles. In this paper, the deflecting trajectories of charged particles are designated as being gravitationally Rutherford-scattered and detailed discussions of angular and radial particle motions are presented.
We analytically study gravitational radiation from corotating binary neutron stars composed of incompressible, homogeneous fluid in circular orbits. The energy and the angular momentum loss rates are derived up to the first post-Newtonian (1PN) order beyond the quadrupole approximation including effects of the finite size of each star of binary. It is found that the leading term of finite size effects in the 1PN order is only $O(GM_{\ast}/c^2 a_{\ast})$ smaller than that in the Newtonian order, where $GM_{\ast}/c^2 a_{\ast}$ means the ratio of the gravitational radius to the mean radius of eac…
We consider the gravitational sector of the superstring effective action with axion-matter couplings. The field equations are developed in the post-Newtonian scheme and approximate solutions for a spinning point mass and a cosmic string are presented. Furthermore, assuming vanishing axion mass and vanishing potential for the dilaton, we consider the gravitational radiation in the leading $O(α'^0)$ order. We find that the total luminosity of a radiative source has monopole and dipole components besides the standard quadrupole one. These components may possibly be checked in binary systems.
Based upon the formalism recently developed by one of us (MS), we analytically perform the post-Newtonian expansion of gravitational waves from a test particle in circular orbit of radius $r_0$ around a Schwarzschild black hole of mass $M$. We calculate gravitational wave forms and luminosity up to $v^8$ order beyond Newtonian, where $v=(M/r_0)^{1/2}$. In particular, we give the exact analytical values of the coefficients of $\ln v$ terms at $v^6$ and $v^8$ orders in the luminosity and confirm the numerical values obtained previously by the other of us (HT) and Nakamura. Our result is valid in…
Exploiting simple yet remarkable properties of relativistic gravitational scattering, we use first-order self-force (linear-in-mass-ratio) results to obtain arbitrary-mass-ratio results for the complete third-subleading post-Newtonian (4.5PN) corrections to the spin-orbit sector of spinning-binary conservative dynamics, for generic (bound or unbound) orbits and spin orientations. We thereby improve important ingredients of models of gravitational waves from spinning binaries, and we demonstrate the improvement in accuracy by comparing against aligned-spin numerical simulations of binary black …
Properties of the motion of electrically charged particles in the background of the Gibbons-Maeda-Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger (GMGHS) black hole is presented in this paper. Radial and angular motion are studied analytically for different values of the fundamental parameter. Therefore, gravitational Rutherford scattering and Keplerian orbits are analysed in detail. Finally, this paper complements previous work by Fernando for null geodesics (Phys. Rev. D 85: 024033, 2012), Olivares & Villanueva (Eur. Phys. J. C 73: 2659, 2013) and Blaga (Automat. Comp. Appl. Math. 22, 41 (2013); Serb. Astron.…
I argue that a criterion of theoretical equivalence due to Clark Glymour [Nous 11(3), 227-251 (1977)] does not capture an important sense in which two theories may be equivalent. I then motivate and state an alternative criterion that does capture the sense of equivalence I have in mind. The principal claim of the paper is that relative to this second criterion, the answer to the question posed in the title is "yes", at least on one natural understanding of Newtonian gravitation.
We present the first numerical-relativity simulation of a compact-object binary whose gravitational waveform is long enough to cover the entire frequency band of advanced gravitational-wave detectors, such as LIGO, Virgo and KAGRA, for mass ratio 7 and total mass as low as $45.5\,M_\odot$. We find that effective-one-body models, either uncalibrated or calibrated against substantially shorter numerical-relativity waveforms at smaller mass ratios, reproduce our new waveform remarkably well, with a negligible loss in detection rate due to modeling error. In contrast, post-Newtonian inspiral wavef…
We derive from first principles third post-Newtonian (3PN) accurate Keplerian-type parametric solution to describe PN-accurate dynamics of non-spinning compact binaries in hyperbolic orbits. Orbital elements and functions of the parametric solution are obtained in terms of the conserved orbital energy and angular momentum in both Arnowitt-Deser-Misner type and modified harmonic coordinates. Elegant checks are provided that include a modified analytic continuation prescription to obtain our independent hyperbolic parametric solution from its eccentric version. A prescription to model gravitatio…
The second post-Newtonian hydrodynamic equations are analyzed within the framework of a plane wave solution. The hydrodynamic equations for the mass and momentum density are coupled with six Poisson equations for the Newtonian and post-Newtonian gravitational potentials. Perturbations of the basic fields and gravitational potentials from a background state by assuming plane wave representations lead to a dispersion relation where the Jeans instability condition emerges. The influence of the first and second post-Newtonian approximations on the Jeans mass is determined. It was shown that the re…
We re-express gravitational wave results in terms of post-Newtonian parameters. Using these expressions, and some simplifying assumptions, we compute that in a favorable case, i.e. a ten solar-mass black hole spiraling in to a 10^6 solar-mass black hole, LISA observations will be able to constrain at the 10% level or better a single combination of post-post-Newtonian parameters one order higher than those already constrained by solar system evidence. This significant constraint will be possible even if the signal-to-noise level is so low that the signal can only be found by matched filtering, …
The rate of gravitational-wave energy loss from inspiralling binary systems of compact objects of arbitrary mass is derived through second post-Newtonian (2PN) order $O[(Gm/rc^2)^2]$ beyond the quadrupole approximation. The result has been derived by two independent calculations of the (source) multipole moments. The 2PN terms, and in particular the finite mass contribution therein (which cannot be obtained in perturbation calculations of black hole spacetimes), are shown to make a significant contribution to the accumulated phase of theoretical templates to be used in matched filtering of the…
We systematically examine the properties of null geodesics around an electrically charged, asymptotically flat black hole in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity, varying the electric charge of black hole and the coupling constant in the theory. We find that the radius of the unstable circular orbit for massless particle decreases with the coupling constant, if the value of the electrical charge is fixed. Additionally, we consider the strong gravitational lensing around such a black hole. We show that the deflection angle, the position angle of the relativistic images, and the magnification …
One obtains a Maxwell-like structure of gravitation by applying the weak-field approximation to the well accepted theory of general relativity or by extending Newton's laws to time-dependent systems. This splits gravity in two parts, namely a gravitoelectric and gravitomagnetic (or cogravitational) one. Due to the obtained similar structure between gravitation and electromagnetism, one can express one field by the other one using a coupling constant depending on the mass to charge ratio of the field source. Calculations of induced gravitational fields using state-of-the-art fusion plasmas reac…
The post-post-Newtonian (2PN) accurate mass quadrupole moment, for compact binaries of arbitrary mass ratio, moving in general orbits is obtained by the multi-polar post Minkowskian approach of Blanchet, Damour, and Iyer (BDI). Using this, for binaries in general orbits, the 2PN contributions to the gravitational waveform, and the associated far-zone energy and angular momentum fluxes are computed. For quasi-elliptic orbits, the energy and angular momentum fluxes are averaged over an orbital period, and employed to determine the 2PN corrections to the rate of decay of the orbital elements.
Gravitational waveforms which describe the inspiral, merger and ringdown of coalescing binaries are usually constructed by synthesising information from perturbative descriptions, in particular post-Newtonian theory and black-hole perturbation theory, with numerical solutions of the full Einstein equations. In this paper we discuss the "glueing" of numerical and post-Newtonian waveforms to produce hybrid waveforms which include subdominant spherical harmonics ("higher order modes"), and focus in particular on the process of consistently aligning the waveforms, which requires a comparison of bo…
We compare the phase evolution of equal-mass nonspinning black-hole binaries from numerical relativity (NR) simulations with post-Newtonian (PN) results obtained from three PN approximants: the TaylorT1 and T4 approximants, for which NR-PN comparisons have already been performed in the literature, and the recently proposed approximant TaylorEt. The accumulated phase disagreement between NR and PN results over the frequency range $Mω= 0.0455$ to $Mω= 0.1$ is greater for TaylorEt than either T1 or T4, but has the attractive property of decreasing monotonically as the PN order is increased.
There are well-known problems associated with the idea of (local) gravitational energy in general relativity. We offer a new perspective on those problems by comparison with Newtonian gravitation, and particularly geometrized Newtonian gravitation (i.e., Newton-Cartan theory). We show that there is a natural candidate for the energy density of a Newtonian gravitational field. But we observe that this quantity is gauge dependent, and that it cannot be defined in the geometrized (gauge-free) theory without introducing further structure. We then address a potential response by showing that there …
A scalar, preferred-frame theory of gravitation is summarized. Space-time is endowed with both a flat metric and a curved, "physical" metric. Motion is governed by a natural extension of Newton's second law, which implies geodesic motion only for a static field. The theory predicts Schwarzschild's exterior metric in the spherical static situation. It also predicts gravitation waves with the velocity of light. The equations of motion are recast into the "flat space - uniform time" form, and compared with the geodesic equations of motion. The principles of the post-Newtonian approximation of thi…
A particle of mass $μ$ moves on a circular orbit around a nonrotating black hole of mass $M$. Under the assumption $μ\ll M$ the gravitational waves emitted by such a binary system can be calculated exactly numerically using black-hole perturbation theory. If, further, the particle is slowly moving, then the waves can be calculated approximately analytically, and expressed in the form of a post-Newtonian expansion. We determine the accuracy of this expansion in a quantitative way by calculating the reduction in signal-to-noise ratio incurred when matched filtering the exact signal with a nonopt…
We construct a self-consistent relativistic Newtonian analogue corresponding to gravitational static spherical symmetric spacetime geometries, staring directly from a generalized scalar relativistic gravitational action in Newtonian framework, which gives geodesic equations of motion identical to those of the parent metric. Consequently, the derived velocity-dependent relativistic scalar potential, which is a relativistic generalization of Newtonian gravitational potential, exactly reproduces the relativistic gravitational features corresponding to any static spherical symmetric spacetime geom…
Pseudo-Newtonian gravitational potential describing the gravitational field of static and spherically symmetric black holes in the universe with a repulsive cosmological constant is introduced. In order to demonstrate the accuracy of the pseudo-Newtonian approach, the related effective potential for test-particle motion is constructed and compared with its general relativistic counterpart given by the Schwarzschild-de Sitter geometry. The results indicate that such an approach could be useful in applications of developed Newtonian theories of accretion discs in astrophysically interesting situ…
We calculated the dimensionless gyromagnetic ratio ("$g$-factor") of self-gravitating, uniformly rotating disks of dust with a constant specific charge $ε$. These disk solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell equations depend on $ε$ and a "relativity parameter" $γ$ ($0<γ\le 1$) up to a scaling parameter. Accordingly, the $g$-factor is a function $g=g(γ,ε)$. The Newtonian limit is characterized by $γ\ll 1$, whereas $γ\to 1$ leads to a black-hole limit. The $g$-factor, for all $ε$, approaches the values $g=1$ as $γ\to 0$ and $g=2$ as $γ\to 1$.
Dark matter and dark energy are dominating components of the Universe. Their presence affects the course and results of processes, which are driven by the gravitational interaction. The objective of the paper was to examine the influence of the dark sector on the gravitational collapse of an electrically charged scalar field. A phantom scalar field was used as a model of dark energy in the system. Dark matter was modeled by a complex scalar field with a quartic potential, charged under a U(1)-gauge field. The dark components were coupled to the electrically charged scalar field via the exponen…
I discuss singular spacetimes in the context of the geometrized formulation of Newtonian gravitation. I argue first that geodesic incompleteness is a natural criterion for when a model of geometrized Newtonian gravitation is singular, and then I show that singularities in this sense arise naturally in classical physics by stating and proving a classical version of the Raychaudhuri-Komar singularity theorem.
We give an overview of literature related to Jürgen Ehlers' pioneering 1981 paper on Frame theory--a theoretical framework for the unification of General Relativity and the equations of classical Newtonian gravitation. This unification encompasses the convergence of one-parametric families of four-dimensional solutions of Einstein's equations of General Relativity to a solution of equations of a Newtonian theory if the inverse of a causality constant goes to zero. As such the corresponding light cones open up and become space-like hypersurfaces of constant absolute time on which Newtonian solu…
This article presents a study of the sufficient accuracy of post-Newtonian and numerical relativity waveforms for the most demanding usage case: parameter estimation of strong sources in advanced gravitational wave detectors. For black hole binaries, these detectors require accurate waveform models which can be constructed by fusing an analytical post-Newtonian inspiral waveform with a numerical relativity merger-ringdown waveform. We perform a comprehensive analysis of errors that enter such "hybrid waveforms". We find that the post-Newtonian waveform must be aligned with the numerical relati…

In the weak-field limit of General Relativity, gravitational waves obey linear equations and propagate at the speed of light. These properties of General Relativity are supported by the observation of ultra high energy cosmic rays as well as by LIGO's recent detection of gravitation waves. We argue that two existing relativistic generalizations of Modified Newtonian Dynamics, namely Generalized Einstein-Aether theory and BIMOND, display fatal inconsistencies with these observations.
The Newtonian gravitational constant $G$ obeys the dimensional relation $[G] [M] [a] = [v]^4$, where $M$, $a$, and $v$ denote mass, acceleration, and speed, respectively. Since the baryonic Tully-Fisher (BTF) and Faber-Jackson (BFJ) relations are observed facts, this relation implies that $G\, a = {\rm constant}$. This result cannot be obtained in Newtonian dynamics which cannot explain the origin of the BTF and BFJ relations. An alternative, modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) assumes that $G=G_0$ is constant in space and derives naturally a characteristic constant acceleration $a=a_0$, as wel…
The Newtonian constant of gravitation $G$ historically has the largest relative uncertainty over all other fundamental constants with some discrepancies in values between different measurements. We propose a new scheme to measure $G$ by detecting the position of a test mass in a precision displacement sensor induced by a force modulation from periodically rotating source masses. To seek different kinds of experimental setups, laser interferometers for the gravitational wave detection and optically-levitated microspheres are analyzed. The high sensitivity of the gravitational wave detectors to …
We use covariant methods to analyse the nonlinear evolution of self-gravitating, non-relativistic media. The formalism is first applied to imperfect fluids, aiming at the kinematic effects of viscosity, before extended to inhomogeneous magnetised environments. The nonlinear electrodynamic formulae are derived and successively applied to electrically resistive and to highly conductive fluids. By nature, the covariant equations isolate the magnetic effects on the kinematics and the dynamics of the medium, combining mathematical transparency and physical clarity. Employing the Newtonian analogue …
C-theory provides a unified framework to study metric, metric-affine and more general theories of gravity. In the vacuum weak-field limit of these theories, the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) parameters $β$ and $γ$ can differ from their general relativistic values. However, there are several classes of models featuring long-distance modifications of gravity but nevertheless passing the Solar system tests. Here it is shown how to compute the PPN parameters in C-theories and also in nonminimally coupled curvature theories, correcting previous results in the literature for the latter.
The generation of gravitational waves from a post-Newtonian source endowed with a quantum spin, modeled by the Weyssenhoff fluid, is investigated in the context of Einstein-Cartan theory at the first post-Newtonian level by resorting to the Blanchet-Damour formalism. After having worked out the basic principles of the hydrodynamics in Einstein-Cartan framework, we study the Weyssenhoff fluid within the post-Newtonian approximation scheme. The complexity of the underlying dynamical equations suggests to employ a discrete description via the point-particle limit, a procedure which permits the an…
General Relativity is the modern theory of gravitation. It has replaced the newtonian theory in the description of the gravitational phenomena. In spite of the remarkable success of the General Relativity Theory, the newtonian gravitational theory is still largely employed, since General Relativity, in most of the cases, just makes very small corrections to the newtonian predictions. Moreover, the newtonian theory is much simpler, technically and conceptually, when compared to the relativistic theory. In this text, we discuss the possibility of extending the traditional newtonian theory in ord…
The Newtonian regime of a recent nonlocal extension of general relativity (GR) is investigated. Nonlocality is introduced via a scalar "constitutive" kernel in a special case of the translational gauge theory of gravitation, namely, the teleparallel equivalent of GR. In this theory, the nonlocal aspect of gravity simulates dark matter. A nonlocal and nonlinear generalization of Poisson's equation of Newtonian gravitation is presented. The implications of nonlocality for the gravitational physics in the solar system are briefly studied.
A spherically symmetric wormhole in Newtonian gravitation in curved space, enhanced with a connection between the mass density and the Ricci scalar, is presented. The wormhole, consisting of two connected asymptotically flat regions, inhabits a spherically symmetric curved space. The gravitational potential, gravitational field and the pressure that supports the fluid that permeates the Newtonian wormhole are computed. Particle dynamics and tidal effects in this geometry are studied. The possibility of having Newtonian black holes in this theory is sketched.
Bonnor stars are regular static compact configurations in equilibrium, composed of an extremal dust fluid, a charged dust fluid where the mass density is equal to the charge density, joined to an exterior vacuum solution, within Newtonian gravity and general relativity. In four dimensions, they obey the corresponding Majumdar-Papapetrou system, where the gravitational potential is a simple function of the electric potential field and the fluid, when there is one, is made of extremal dust. The Majumdar-Papapetrou system can be generalized to d spacetime dimensions. Thus, it is natural to study …
In the weak field limit general relativity reduces, as is well known, to the Newtonian gravitation. Alternative theories of gravity, however, do not necessarily reduce to Newtonian gravitation; some of them, for example, reduce to Yukawa-like potentials instead of the Newtonian potential. Since the Newtonian gravitation is largely used to model with success the structures of the universe, such as for example galaxies and clusters of galaxies, a way to probe and constrain alternative theories, in the weak field limit, is to apply them to model the structures of the universe. In the present stud…
The search for non-relativistic deviations from Newtonian gravitation can lead to new phenomena signalling the unification of gravity with the other fundamental interactions. Various recent theoretical frameworks indicate a possible window for non-Newtonian forces with gravitational coupling strength in the micrometre range. The major expected background in the same range is attributable to the Casimir force or variants of it if dielectric materials, rather than conducting ones, are considered. Here we review the measurements of the Casimir force performed so far in the micrometre range and ho…
Gravitational waves emitted by black hole binary inspiral and mergers enable unprecedented strong-field tests of gravity, requiring accurate theoretical modelling of the expected signals in extensions of General Relativity. In this paper we model the gravitational wave emission of inspiraling binaries in scalar Gauss-Bonnet gravity theories. Going beyond the weak-coupling approximation, we derive the gravitational waveform to first post-Newtonian order beyond the quadrupole approximation and calculate new contributions from nonlinear curvature terms. We quantify the effect of these terms and p…
Due to the effectiveness of using machine learning in physics, it has been widely received increased attention in the literature. However, the notion of applying physics in machine learning has not been given much awareness to. This work is a hybrid of physics and machine learning where concepts of physics are used in machine learning. We propose the supervised Gravitational Dimensionality Reduction (GDR) algorithm where the data points of every class are moved to each other for reduction of intra-class variances and better separation of classes. For every data point, the other points are cons…
