This paper studies quantum annealing (QA) for clustering, which can be seen as an extension of simulated annealing (SA). We derive a QA algorithm for clustering and propose an annealing schedule, which is crucial in practice. Experiments show the proposed QA algorithm finds better clustering assignments than SA. Furthermore, QA is as easy as SA to implement.
Recently, Heim, Ronnow, Isakov and Troyer [Science 348 (2015) 215] have reported that Monte Carlo simulations for the Ising spin glass model on the square lattice in the physically relevant continuous-imaginary-time limit do not show superiority of quantum annealing (QA) using transverse field against classical annealing (CA). Although the QA schedule that they had used has been using conventionally, however the QA schedule mathematically has no guarantee that the used schedule is the best QA schedule for performance of optimization. We propose a new QA schedule for studying transverse-field-b…

We present a novel framework exploiting the cascade of phase transitions occurring during a simulated annealing of the Expectation-Maximisation algorithm to cluster datasets with multi-scale structures. Using the weighted local covariance, we can extract, a posteriori and without any prior knowledge, information on the number of clusters at different scales together with their size. We also study the linear stability of the iterative scheme to derive the threshold at which the first transition occurs and show how to approximate the next ones. Finally, we combine simulated annealing together wi…
Quenching and annealing are extreme opposites in the time evolution of a quantum system: Annealing explores equilibrium phases of a Hamiltonian with slowly changing parameters and can be exploited as a tool for solving complex optimization problems. In contrast, quenches are sudden changes of the Hamiltonian, producing a non-equilibrium situation. Here, we investigate the relation between the two cases. Specifically, we show that the minimum of the annealing gap, which is an important bottleneck of quantum annealing algorithms, can be revealed from a dynamical quench parameter which describes …
We provide a reusability report of the method presented by Chen et al. in "Optimizing quantum annealing schedules with Monte Carlo tree search enhanced with neural networks" and add further benchmarks on Max-Cut problems.
We investigate a quantum annealing approach based on real-time quantum dynamics for graph coloring. In this approach, a driving Hamiltonian is chosen so that constraints are naturally satisfied without penalty terms, and the dimension of the Hilbert space is considerably reduced. The total Hamiltonian, which consists of driving and problem Hamiltonians, resembles a disordered quantum spin chain. The ground state of the problem Hamiltonian for graph coloring is degenerate. This degeneracy is advantageous and is characteristic of this approach. Real-time quantum simulations in a small system dem…
Providing an optimal path to a quantum annealing algorithm is key to finding good approximate solutions to computationally hard optimization problems. Reinforcement is one of the strategies that can be used to circumvent the exponentially small energy gaps of the system in the annealing process. Here a time-dependent reinforcement term is added to the Hamiltonian in order to give lower energies to the most probable states of the evolving system. In this study, we take a local entropy in the configuration space for the reinforcement and apply the algorithm to a number of easy and hard optimizat…
