In this paper we consider the capacity of the cognitive radio channel in a fading environment under a "low interference regime". This capacity depends critically on a power loss parameter, $α$, which governs how much transmit power the cognitive radio dedicates to relaying the primary message. We derive a simple, accurate approximation to $α$ which gives considerable insight into system capacity. We also investigate the effects of system parameters and propagation environment on $α$ and the cognitive radio capacity. In all cases, the use of the approximation is shown to be extremely accurate. Finally, we derive the probability that the "low interference regime" holds and demonstrate that this is the dominant case, especially in practical cognitive radio deployment scenarios.
The ergodic and outage channel capacity of different optimal and suboptimal combinations of transmit power and modulation rate adaptation strategies over a joint fading and two-path shadowing (JFTS) fading/shadowing channel is studied in this paper. Analytically tractable expressions for channel capacity are obtained, assuming perfect channel side information (CSI) at the receiver and/or the transmitter with negligible feedback delay. Furthermore, the impacts of the JFTS parameters on the channel capacity achieved by these adaptive transmission techniques are determined.
This work is devoted to the formulation and derivation of the $κ-μ$/gamma distribution which corresponds to A physical fading model. This distribution is composite and is based on the well known $κ-μ$ generalized multipath model and the gamma shadowing model. A special case of the derived model constitutes the $κ-μ$ Extreme/gamma model which accounts for severe multipath and shadowing effects. These models provide accurate characterisation of the simultaneous occurrence of multipath fading and shadowing effects. This is achieved thanks to the remarkable flexibility of their named parameters wh…
We consider the following basic link capacity (a.k.a., one-shot scheduling) problem in wireless networks: Given a set of communication links, find a maximum subset of links that can successfully transmit simultaneously. Good performance guarantees are known only for deterministic models, such as the physical model with geometric (log-distance) pathloss. We treat this problem under stochastic shadowing under general distributions, bound the effects of shadowing on optimal capacity, and derive constant approximation algorithms. We also consider temporal fading under Rayleigh distribution, and sh…
Performances of cellular networks over κ-μ shadowed fading with long-term shadowing has been studied in the existing literature. However, the impact of κ-μ shadowed fading with instantaneous shadowing on performances of cellular networks is unknown. Therefore, this letter analyzes the downlink coverage probability of a Poisson network with double shadowed fading which is composed of a large-scale fading of lognormal distribution and κ-μ shadowed fading with integer fading parameters. The closest base station association rule without shadowing is considered. For analytical tractability, the dou…
In this paper, the effects of interference on composite fading environments, where multipath fading coexists with shadowing, are investigated. Based on some mathematical convenient expressions for the sum of squared $\mathcal{K}$-distributed random variables, which are derived for the first time, important statistical metrics for the signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) are studied for various cases including non identical, identical and fully correlated statistics. Furthermore, our analysis is extended to multi-channel receivers and in particular to selection diversity (SD) receivers…
The secrecy outage performance of wireless communication systems operating over spatially correlated composite fading channels is analyzed in this paper. We adopt a multiplicative composite channel model for both the legitimate communication link and the link between the eavesdropper and the legitimate transmitter, consisting of Nakagami-$m$ distributed small-scale fading and shadowing (large-scale fading) modeled by the Gamma distribution. We consider the realistic case where small-scale fading between the links is independent, but shadowing is arbitrarily correlated, and present novel analyt…
In this paper we consider the capacity of the cognitive radio channel in different fading environments under a low interference regime. First we derive the probability that the low interference regime holds under shadow fading as well as Rayleigh and Rician fast fading conditions. We demonstrate that this is the dominant case, especially in practical cognitive radio deployment scenarios. The capacity of the cognitive radio channel depends critically on a power loss parameter, $α$, which governs how much transmit power the cognitive radio dedicates to relaying the primary message. We derive a s…
The secrecy performance of realistic wireless multicast scenarios can be significantly deteriorated by the simultaneous occurrence of multipath and shadowing. To resolve this security threat, in this work an opportunistic relaying-based dual-hop wireless multicast framework is proposed in which the source dispatches confidential information to a bunch of receivers via intermediate relays under the wiretapping attempts of multiple eavesdroppers. Two scenarios, i.e. non-line of sight (NLOS) and line of sight (LOS) communications along with the multiplicative and LOS shadowing are considered wher…
This work is devoted to the formulation and derivation of the $α{-}κ{-}μ{/}$gamma distribution which corresponds to a physical fading model. The proposed distribution is composite and is constituted by the $α{-}κ{-}μ$ non-linear generalized multipath model and the gamma shadowing model. It also constitute the basis for deriving the $α{-}κ{-}μ$ \textit{Extreme}${/}$gamma model which accounts for non-linear severe multipath and shadowing effects and also includes the more widely known $α{-}μ$ and $κ{-}μ$ models which includes as special cases the Rice, Weibull, Nakagami-$m$ and Rayleigh distribu…
The proposed research performs an analysis of the capacity higher-order statistics for a single-input multiple-output multiantenna wireless communication system equipped with a maximum-ratio combining scheme. It was assumed that the propagation multipath channel is described with the $κ-μ$ fading model with the correlated dominant components. Closed-form and asymptotic expressions were derived and applied to the problem of minimum capacity reliability (due to channel fluctuations, thus possible rate deterioration) and corresponding signal-to-noise ratio analysis. The performed computer simulat…
Through ordinary transmissions over wireless multicast networks are greatly hampered due to the simultaneous presence of fading and shadowing of wireless channels, secure transmissions can be enhanced by properly exploiting random attributes of the propagation medium. This study focuses on the utilization of those attributes to enhance the physical layer security (PLS) performance of a dual-hop wireless multicast network over kappa-mu shadow-fading channel under the wiretapping attempts of multiple eavesdroppers. In order to improve the secrecy level, the best relay selection strategy among mu…
The existing relay-assisted terahertz (THz) wireless system is limited to dual-hop transmission with pointing errors and short-term fading without considering the shadowing effect. This paper analyzes the performance of a multihop-assisted backhaul communication mixed with an access link under the shadowed fading with antenna misalignment errors. We derive statistical results of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the multihop link by considering independent but not identically distributed (i.ni.d) $α$-$μ$ fading channel with pointing errors employing channel-assisted (CA) and fixed-gain (FG) a…
In this paper, the performance of adaptive modulation in multi-user cognitive radio networks over fading channels is analyzed. Multi-user diversity is considered for opportunistic user selection among multiple secondary users. The analysis is obtained for Nakagami-$m$ fading channels. Both adaptive continuous rate and adaptive discrete rate schemes are analysed in opportunistic spectrum access and spectrum sharing. Numerical results are obtained and depicted to quantify the effects of multi-user fading environments on adaptive modulation operating in cognitive radio networks.
An ad hoc network with a finite spatial extent and number of nodes or mobiles is analyzed. The mobile locations may be drawn from any spatial distribution, and interference-avoidance protocols or protection against physical collisions among the mobiles may be modeled by placing an exclusion zone around each radio. The channel model accounts for the path loss, Nakagami fading, and shadowing of each received signal. The Nakagami m-parameter can vary among the mobiles, taking any positive value for each of the interference signals and any positive integer value for the desired signal. The analysi…
This work is devoted to the formulation and derivation of the $η{-}μ{/}$gamma and $λ{-}μ{/}$gamma distributions which correspond to physical fading models. These distributions are composite and are based on the $η-μ$ and $λ-μ$ generalized multipath models, respectively, and the gamma shadowing model. Novel analytic expressions are derived for the corresponding envelope probability density functions. Importantly, the proposed models provide accurate characterisation of the simultaneous occurrence of multipath fading and shadowing effects which is achieved thanks to the remarkable flexibility of…
The present paper is devoted to the evaluation of energy detection based spectrum sensing over different multipath fading and shadowing conditions. This is realized by means of a unified and versatile approach that is based on the particularly flexible mixture gamma distribution. To this end, novel analytic expressions are firstly derived for the probability of detection over MG fading channels for the conventional single-channel communication scenario. These expressions are subsequently employed in deriving closed-form expressions for the case of square-law combining and square-law selection …
In this paper, we investigate the performance of energy detection-based spectrum sensing over F composite fading channels. To this end, an analytical expression for the average detection probability is firstly derived. This expression is then extended to account for collaborative spectrum sensing, square-law selection diversity reception and noise power uncertainty. The corresponding receiver operating characteristics (ROC) are analyzed for different conditions of the average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), noise power uncertainty, time-bandwidth product, multipath fading, shadowing, number of di…
The ergodic capacity of underlay cognitive (secondary) dual-hop relaying systems is analytically investigated. Specifically, the amplify-and-forward transmission protocol is considered, while the received signals undergo multipath fading and shadowing with non-identical statistics. To efficiently describe this composite type of fading, the well-known generalized-$K$ fading model is used. New analytical expressions and quite accurate closed-form approximations regarding the ergodic capacity of the end-to-end communication are obtained, in terms of finite sum series of the Meijer's-$G$ function.…
Cognitive radio technology is an innovative radio design concept which aims to increase spectrum utilization by exploiting unused spectrum in dynamically changing environments. By extending previous results, we investigate the capacity gains achievable with this dynamic spectrum approach in asymmetric fading channels. More specifically, we allow the secondary-to-primary and secondary-to-secondary user channels to undergo Rayleigh or Rician fading, with arbitrary link power. In order to compute the capacity, we derive the distributions of ratios of Rayleigh and Rician variables. Compared to the…
In this study, the product of two independent and non-identically distributed (i.n.i.d.) random variables (RVs) for \k{appa}-μ fading distribution and α-μ fading distribution is considered. The method of the product model of RVs has been widely applied in numerous of communications fields, such as cascaded fading channels, multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems, radar communications and cognitive radio networks (CRs). The exact series expressions of the product of two i.n.i.d. RVs X for \k{appa}-μ variates and Y for α-μ variates are derived instead of Fox H-function to solve the problem…
This paper determines the optimum secondary user power allocation and ergodic multicast rate of point-to-multipoint communication in a cognitive radio network in the presence of outage constraints for the primary users. Using tools from extreme value theory (EVT), it is first proved that the limiting distribution of the minimum of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) random variables (RVs) is a Weibull distribution, when the user signal and the interferer signals undergo independent and non-identically distributed (i.n.i.d.) $κ-μ$ shadowed fading.…
In this paper we describe a model for calculating the aggregate interference encountered by primary receivers in the presence of randomly placed cognitive radios (CRs). We show that incorporating the impact of distance attenuation and lognormal fading on each constituent interferer in the aggregate, leads to a composite interference that cannot be satisfactorily modeled by a lognormal. Using the interference statistics we determine a number of key parameters needed for the deployment of CRs. Examples of these are the exclusion zone radius, needed to protect the primary receiver under different…
This paper is concerned with spectrum sharing cognitive radio networks, where a secondary user (SU) or cognitive radio link communicates simultaneously over the same frequency band with an existing primary user (PU) link. It is assumed that the SU transmitter has the perfect channel state information (CSI) on the fading channels from SU transmitter to both PU and SU receivers (as usually assumed in the literature), as well as the fading channel from PU transmitter to PU receiver (a new assumption). With the additional PU CSI, we study the optimal power control for the SU over different fading …
This paper studies the information-theoretic limits of a secondary or cognitive radio (CR) network under spectrum sharing with an existing primary radio network. In particular, the fading cognitive multiple-access channel (C-MAC) is first studied, where multiple secondary users transmit to the secondary base station (BS) under both individual transmit-power constraints and a set of interference-power constraints each applied at one of the primary receivers. This paper considers the long-term (LT) or the short-term (ST) transmit-power constraint over the fading states at each secondary transmit…
In this paper, we analyze the performance of cognitive radio (CR) systems over different composite generalized multipath /shadowed fading scenarios. The \k{appa}-μ shadowed and Fisher-Snedecor F fading channels which are proposed as a simple and high accurate distributions in comparison with generalized-K (KG) and Nakagami-m shadowed conditions are used in this analysis. For the \k{appa}-μ shadowed, a novel simple exact closed-form analytic expression for the probability density function (PDF) and the cumulative distribution function (CDF) are introduced by assuming the fading parameters are i…
Considering both small-scale fading and long-term shadowing, we characterize the downlink rate distribution at a typical user equipment (UE) in a heterogeneous cellular network (HetNet), where shadowing, following any general distribution, impacts cell selection while fading does not. Prior work either ignores the impact of channel randomness on cell selection or lumps all the sources of randomness into a single variable, with cell selection based on the instantaneous signal strength, which is unrealistic. As an application of the results, we study the impact of shadowing on load balancing in …
This paper deals with the challenging problem of spectrum sensing in cognitive radio. We consider a stochastic system model where the the Primary User (PU) transmits a periodic signal over fading channels. The effect of frequency offsets due to oscillator mismatch, and Doppler offset is studied. We show that for this case the Likelihood Ratio Test (LRT) cannot be evaluated poitnwise. We present a novel approach to approximate the marginilisation of the frequency offset using a single point estimate. This is obtained via a low complexity Constrained Adaptive Notch Filter (CANF) to estimate the …
In this paper, the physical layer security aspects of a wireless framework over α-\k{appa}-μ shadowed (AKMS) fading channel are examined by acquiring closed-form novel expressions of average secrecy capacity, secure outage probability (SOP), and strictly positive secrecy capacity. The lower bound of SOP is derived along with the asymptotic expression of SOP at the high signal-to-noise ratio regime in order to achieve secrecy diversity gain. Capitalizing on these expressions, the consequences due to the simultaneous occurrence of fading and shadowing are quantified. Finally, Monte-Carlo simulat…
In this paper, we consider an overlay cognitive radio network, in which a secondary transmitter (ST) is willing to relay the information of a primary transmitter toward a primary receiver. In return, ST can access the licensed band to send its own information superimposed with the primary signal to a secondary receiver. The power-limited ST uses a power splitting protocol to harvest energy from its received signal to increase its transmit power. We analyze the performance of the primary and the secondary systems under independent Nakagami-m fading by deriving their corresponding outage probabi…
We consider the cognitive power control problem of maximizing the secondary throughput under an outage probability constraint on a constant-power constant-rate primary link. We assume a temporally correlated primary channel with two types of feedback: perfect delayed channel state information (CSI) and one-bit automatic repeat request (ARQ). We use channel correlation to enhance the primary and secondary throughput via exploiting the CSI feedback to predict the future primary channel gain. We provide a numerical solution for the power control optimization problem under delayed CSI. In order to…
A cognitive radio network (CRN) is formed by either allowing the secondary users (SUs) in a secondary communication network (SCN) to opportunistically operate in the frequency bands originally allocated to a primary communication network (PCN) or by allowing SCN to coexist with the primary users (PUs) in PCN as long as the interference caused by SCN to each PU is properly regulated. In this paper, we consider the latter case, known as spectrum sharing, and study the optimal power allocation strategies to achieve the ergodic capacity and the outage capacity of the SU fading channel under differ…
This paper investigates the application of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) to satellite communication network over Shadowed-Rician fading channels. The impact of imperfect successive interference cancellation (ipSIC) on NOMA-based satellite network is taken into consideration from the perspective of practical scenarios. We first derive new exact expressions of outage probability for the p-th terrestrial user and provide the corresponding asymptotic analysis results. The diversity order of zero and p are achieved by the p-th terrestrial user with ipSIC and perfect successive interference …
To enhance the national security, there is a growing need for government agencies to legitimately monitor suspicious communication links for preventing intended crimes and terror attacks. In this paper, we propose a new wireless information surveillance paradigm by investigating a scenario where a legitimate monitor aims to intercept a suspicious wireless communication link over fading channels. The legitimate monitor can successfully eavesdrop (decode) the information of the suspicious link at each fading state only when its achievable data rate is no smaller than that at the suspicious recei…
Relay technology has recently gained great interest in millimeter wave (60 GHz or above) radio frequencies as a promising transmission technique improving the quality of service, providing high data rate, and extending the coverage area without additional transmit power in deeply shadowed fading environments. The performance of relay-based systems considerably depends on which relay selection protocols (RSPs) are used. These RSPs are typically using the channel side information (CSI). Specifically, the relay terminal (RT) is chosen among all available RTs by a central entity (CE) which receive…
Energy detection is a widely used method of spectrum sensing in cognitive radio and Radio Detection And Ranging (RADAR) systems. This paper is devoted to the analytical evaluation of the performance of an energy detector over Weibull fading channels. This is a flexible fading model that has been shown capable of providing accurate characterization of multipath fading in, e.g., typical cellular radio frequency range of 800${/}$900 MHz. A novel analytic expression for the corresponding average probability of detection is derived in a simple algebraic representation which renders it convenient to…
This paper deals with the secrecy capacity of the radio channel in interference-limited regime. We assume that interferers are uniformly scattered over the network area according to a Point Poisson Process and the channel model consists of path-loss, log-normal shadowing and Nakagami-m fading. Both the probability of non-zero secrecy capacity and the secrecy outage probability are then derived in closed-form expressions using tools of stochastic geometry and higher-order statistics. Our numerical results show how the secrecy metrics are affected by the disposition of the desired receiver, the …
In this paper, the ergodic sum-rate of a fading cognitive multiple access channel (C-MAC) is studied, where a secondary network (SN) with multiple secondary users (SUs) transmitting to a secondary base station (SBS) shares the spectrum band with a primary user (PU). An interference power constraint (IPC) is imposed on the SN to protect the PU. Under such a constraint and the individual transmit power constraint (TPC) imposed on each SU, we investigate the power allocation strategies to maximize the ergodic sum-rate of a fading C-MAC without successive interference cancellation (SIC). In partic…
The effective capacity of communication systems over generalized $κ$-$μ$ shadowed fading channels is investigated in this letter. A novel and analytical expression for the exact effective capacity is derived in terms of extended generalized bivariate Meijer's-$G$ function. To intuitively reveal the impact of the system and channel parameters on the effective capacity, we also derive closed-form expressions for the effective capacity in the asymptotically high signal-to-noise ratio regime. Our results demonstrate that the effective capacity is a monotonically increasing function of channel fadi…
In cognitive multiple access networks, feedback is an important mechanism to convey secondary transmitter primary base station (STPB) channel gains from the primary base station (PBS) to the secondary base station (SBS). This paper investigates the optimal sum-rate capacity scaling laws for cognitive multiple access networks in feedback limited communication scenarios. First, an efficient feedback protocol called $K$-smallest channel gains ($K$-SCGs) feedback protocol is proposed in which the PBS feeds back the $\K$ smallest out of $N$ STPB channel gains to the SBS. Second, the sum-rate perfor…
In this paper, novel closed-form expressions for the level crossing rate (LCR) and average fade duration (AFD) of $κ-μ$ shadowed fading channels are derived. The new equations provide the capability of modeling the correlation between the time derivative of the shadowed dominant and multipath components of the $κ-μ$ shadowed fading envelope. Verification of the new equations is performed by reduction to a number of known special cases. It is shown that as the shadowing of the resultant dominant component decreases, the signal crosses lower threshold levels at a reduced rate. Furthermore, the i…
This paper considers spectrum sharing for wireless communication between a cognitive radio (CR) link and a primary radio (PR) link. It is assumed that the CR protects the PR transmission by applying the so-called interference-temperature constraint, whereby the CR is allowed to transmit regardless of the PR's on/off status provided that the resultant interference power level at the PR receiver is kept below some predefined threshold. For the fading PR and CR channels, the interference-power constraint at the PR receiver is usually one of the following two types: One is to regulate the average …
In this paper, we propose a mixture Gamma shadowed (MGS) distribution as a unified composite model via representing the shadowing by an inverse Nakagami-$m$. Accordingly, the exact expression and the asymptotic behaviour at high average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime of the fundamental statistics of a MGS distribution are derived first. These statistics are then applied to analyze the performance of the wireless communications systems over double shadowed $α-κ-μ$ fading via providing the outage probability (OP), the average bit error probability (ABEP), the average channel capacity (ACC), …
This paper studies optimal bandwidth and power allocation in a cognitive radio network where multiple secondary users (SUs) share the licensed spectrum of a primary user (PU) under fading channels using the frequency division multiple access scheme. The sum ergodic capacity of all the SUs is taken as the performance metric of the network. Besides all combinations of the peak/average transmit power constraints at the SUs and the peak/average interference power constraint imposed by the PU, total bandwidth constraint of the licensed spectrum is also taken into account. Optimal bandwidth allocati…
In this paper, the secrecy analysis of physical layer when both the main and wiretap channels undergo $κ-μ$ shadowed fading channel is investigated. In particular, the average secrecy capacity (ASC), secure outage probability (SOP), the lower bound of SOP (SOP$^L$), and the probability of strictly positive secrecy capacity (SPSC) are derived by using the classic Wyner's wiretap model. Two different scenarios for the fading parameters, i.e., $μ$ and $m$ which represents the shadowing impact have been studied. These parameters are chosen first as arbitrary numbers, thus the performance metrics a…
The paper investigates the problem of maximizing expected sum throughput in a fading multiple access cognitive radio network when secondary user (SU) transmitters have energy harvesting capability, and perform cooperative spectrum sensing. We formulate the problem as maximization of sum-capacity of the cognitive multiple access network over a finite time horizon subject to a time averaged interference constraint at the primary user (PU) and almost sure energy causality constraints at the SUs. The problem is a mixed integer non-linear program with respect to two decision variables namely spectr…
Cognitive radios sense the radio spectrum in order to find unused frequency bands and use them in an agile manner. Transmission by the primary user must be detected reliably even in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime and in the face of shadowing and fading. Communication signals are typically cyclostationary, and have many periodic statistical properties related to the symbol rate, the coding and modulation schemes as well as the guard periods, for example. These properties can be exploited in designing a detector, and for distinguishing between the primary and secondary users' signals…
Opportunistic Spatial Orthogonalization (OSO) is a cognitive radio scheme that allows the existence of secondary users and hence increases the system throughput, even if the primary user occupies all the frequency bands all the time. Notably, this throughput advantage is obtained without sacrificing the performance of the primary user, if the interference margin is carefully chosen. The key idea is to exploit the spatial dimensions to orthogonalize users and hence minimize interference. However, unlike the time and frequency dimensions, there is no universal basis for the set of all multi-dime…
In this paper, we propose a methodology for estimating the statistics of the intercell interference power in the downlink of a multicellular network. We first establish an analytical expression for the probability law of the interference power when only Rayleigh multipath fading is considered. Next, focusing on a propagation environment where small-scale Rayleigh fading as well as large-scale effects, including attenuation with distance and lognormal shadowing, are taken into consideration, we elaborate a semi-analytical method to build up the histogram of the interference power distribution. …
In this paper we describe the effect of imperfections in the radio environment map (REM) information on the performance of cognitive radio (CR) systems. Via simulations we explore the relationship between the required precision of the REM and various channel/system properties. For example, the degree of spatial correlation in the shadow fading is a key factor as is the interference constraint employed by the primary user. Based on the CR interferers obtained from the simulations, we characterize the temporal behavior of such systems by computing the level crossing rates (LCRs) of the cumulativ…
In this paper, the performance of cognitive transmission under quality of service (QoS)constraints and interference limitations is studied. Cognitive secondary users are assumed to initially perform sensing over multiple frequency bands (or equivalently channels) to detect the activities of primary users. Subsequently, they perform transmission in a single channel at variable power and rates depending on the channel sensing decisions and the fading environment. A state transition model is constructed to model this cognitive operation. Statistical limitations on the buffer lengths are imposed t…
The fading cognitive multiple-access channel with confidential messages (CMAC-CM) is investigated, in which two users attempt to transmit common information to a destination and user 1 also has confidential information intended for the destination. User 1 views user 2 as an eavesdropper and wishes to keep its confidential information as secret as possible from user 2. The multiple-access channel (both the user-to-user channel and the user-to-destination channel) is corrupted by multiplicative fading gain coefficients in addition to additive white Gaussian noise. The channel state information (…
In this paper, we propose and investigate an aerial reconfigurable intelligent surface (aerial-RIS)-aided wireless communication system. Specifically, considering practical composite fading channels, we characterize the air-to-ground (A2G) links by Namkagami-m small-scale fading and inverse-Gamma large-scale shadowing. To investigate the delay-limited performance of the proposed system, we derive a tight approximate closed-form expression for the end-to-end outage probability (OP). Next, considering a mobile environment, where performance analysis is intractable, we rely on machine learning-ba…
In this paper, performance of cognitive transmission over time-selective flat fading channels is studied under quality of service (QoS) constraints and channel uncertainty. Cognitive secondary users (SUs) are assumed to initially perform channel sensing to detect the activities of the primary users, and then attempt to estimate the channel fading coefficients through training. Energy detection is employed for channel sensing, and different minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) estimation methods are considered for channel estimation. In both channel sensing and estimation, erroneous decisions can b…
Spectrum sensing is an essential functionality that enables cognitive radios to detect spectral holes and opportunistically use under-utilized frequency bands without causing harmful interference to primary networks. Since individual cognitive radios might not be able to reliably detect weak primary signals due to channel fading/shadowing, this paper proposes a cooperative wideband spectrum sensing scheme, referred to as spatial-spectral joint detection, which is based on a linear combination of the local statistics from spatially distributed multiple cognitive radios. The cooperative sensing …
Cognitive radios hold tremendous promise for increasing the spectral efficiency of wireless communication systems. In this paper, an adaptive bit allocation algorithm is presented for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) CR systems operating in a frequency selective fading environment. The algorithm maximizes the CR system throughput in the presence of narrowband interference, while guaranteeing a BER below a predefined threshold. The effect of imperfect channel estimation on the algorithm's performance is also studied.
Leveraging on the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) paradigm for enabling the next Internet of Things (IoT) and 6G era, this paper develops a comprehensive theoretical framework characterizing the performance of RIS-assisted communications in a plethora of propagation environments. We derive unified mathematical models for the outage probability and ergodic capacity of single and multiple-element RIS over Fox's H fading channel, which includes as special cases nearly all linear and non linear multi-path and shadowing fading models adopted in the open literature. For gleaning further ins…
