We consider a cosmology with a non-compact nonlinear sigma model. The target space is of de-Sitter type and four scalar fields are introduced. The potential is absent but cosmological constant term $Λ$ is added. One of the scalar fields is time dependent and the remaining three fields have no time dependence but only spatial dependence. We show that a very simple ansatz for the scalar fields results in the accelerating universe with an exponential expansion at late times. It is pointed out that the presence of the energy density and pressure coming from the spatial variation of the three scalar fields plays an essential role in our analysis which includes $Λ=0$ as a special case and it discriminate from the standard $Λ$-dominated acceleration. We perform a stability analysis of the solutions and find that some solutions are classically stable and attractor. We also present a non-perturbative solution which asymptotically approaches an exponential acceleration and discusspossible cosmological implications in relation with dark energy. It turns out that the equation of state approaches asymptotically $ω=-1$ both from above and below, but the crossing does not occur. It predicts present value of $ω\sim -1\mp 0.07$, which is within the region allowed by the oservational data. This solution also exhibits a power law expansion at early times, and the energy density of the scalar fields mimics that of the stiff matter.
In this essay we propose that the theory of gravity's vacuum is described by a de Sitter geometry. Under this assumption we consider an adjustment mechanism able to screen any value of the vacuum energy of the matter fields. We discuss the most general scalar-tensor cosmological models with second order equations of motion that have a fixed de Sitter critical point for any kind of material content. These models give rise to interesting cosmological evolutions that we shall discuss.
We study Kaluza-Klein cosmology in cuscuton gravity and find an exact solution describing an accelerating 4-dimensional universe with a stable extra dimension. A cuscuton which is a non-dynamical scalar field is responsible for the accelerating expansion and a vector field makes the extra dimensional space stable. Remarkably, the accelerating universe in our model is not exactly de Sitter.
Starting from a discussion of the black hole information loss paradox, we argue that Primordial Black Hole Remnants (PBHRs) of Planck mass, should they exist, are a plausible candidate for dark energy. We call this proposal the PBHR model. We also find an instability of de Sitter space towards a space with power-law accelerating expansion, the time dependence of the cosmological constant and the resulting form of the metric, and propose that this is the dominant instability of de Sitter space. We conjecture that a similar instability does not afflict a space sourced by PBHRs. We find that the …
In this paper, the effect of the space-time dimension on effective thermodynamic quantities in (n+2)-dimensional Reissoner-Nordstrom-de Sitter space has been stud ied. Based on derived effective thermodynamic quantities, conditions for the phase transition are obtained. The result shows that the accelerating cosmic expansion can be attained by the entropy force arisen from the interaction between horizons of black holes and our universe, which provides a possible way to explain the physical mechanism for the accelerating cosmic expansion.
In the context of Horndeski cosmologies, we consider a dynamical adjustment mechanism able to screen any value of the vacuum energy of the matter fields leading to a fixed de Sitter geometry. Thus, we present the most general scalar-tensor cosmological models without higher than second order derivatives in the field equation that have a fixed spatially flat de Sitter critical point for any kind of material content or vacuum energy. These models allow us to understand the current accelerated expansion of the universe as the result of the evolution towards the critical point when it is an attrac…
The Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati brane-world model provides a possible approach to address the late-time cosmic acceleration. However, it has subsequently been pointed out that a ghost instability will arise on the self-accelerating branch. Here, we carefully investigate whether this ghost problem could be possibly cured by introducing the Gauss-Bonnet term in the five-dimensional bulk action, a natural generalization to the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati model. Our analysis is carried out for a background where a de Sitter brane is embedded in an anti-de Sitter bulk. Our result shows that the ghost excit…
The curvature scalar invariants of the Riemann tensor are important in General Relativity because they allow a manifestly coordinate invariant characterisation of certain geometrical properties of spacetimes such as, among others, curvature singularities, gravitomagnetism. We calculate explicit analytic expressions for the set of Zakhary-McIntosh curvature invariants for accelerating Kerr-Newman black holes in (anti-)de Sitter spacetime as well as for the Kerr-Newman-(anti-)de Sitter black hole. These black hole metrics belong to the most general type D solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equatio…
For any quasi de Sitter background, we show that a recently proposed scalar weak gravity conjecture (sWGC) follows from the swampland distance conjecture, together with the covariant entropy bound. While pointing out the limitations of our argument, we suggest how further generalizations of our result might indicate that the shape of the potential of a scalar field in a low-energy effective field theory gets highly constrained due to the distance conjecture alone, going beyond the refined de Sitter conjecture. We also correct some previous comments regarding cosmological implications of the sW…
We investigate static and spherically symmetric solutions in the Minimal Theory of Bigravity (MTBG). First, we show that a pair of Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes with different cosmological constants and black hole masses written in the spatially-flat Gullstrand-Painlevé (GP) coordinates is a solution in the self-accelerating branch of MTBG, while it cannot be a solution in the normal branch. We then illustrate how Schwarzschild-de Sitter solutions can become compatible with the normal branch when using different coordinates. We also confirm that the self-accelerating branch of MTBG admits…
We construct de Sitter branes in a flat bulk of massive gravity in $5D$. We find two branches of solutions, reminiscent of the normal and self-accelerating branches in DGP, but with rather different properties. Neither branch has a self-accelerating limit: the background geometry requires having a nonvanishing tension. On the other hand, on both branches there are sub-branches where the leading order contributions of the tension to the curvature cancel. In these cases it turns out that larger tensions curve the background less. Further, both branches support a localized $4D$ massless graviton …
We study in detail the phase space of a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe filled with various cosmological fluids which may or may not interact. We use various expressions for the equation of state, and we analyze the physical significance of the resulting fixed points. In addition we discuss the effects of the stability or an instability of some fixed points. Moreover we study an interesting phenomenological scenario for which there is an oscillating interaction between the dark energy and dark matter fluid. As we demonstrate, in the context of the model we use, at early times the interacti…
We continue the exploration of the consistency of a modified-gravity theory that generalizes General Relativity by including a dynamical torsion in addition to the dynamical metric. The six-parameter theory we consider was found to be consistent around arbitrary torsionless Einstein backgrounds, in spite of its containing a (notoriously delicate) massive spin-2 excitation. At zero bare cosmological constant, this theory was found to admit a self-accelerating solution whose exponential expansion is sustained by a non-zero torsion background. The scalar-type perturbations of the latter torsionfu…
Dark energy models can be seen as dynamical systems. In this paper we show that multi-field models with a curved field space give rise to new critical points and we analyse their stability. These are new accelerating solutions in late-time cosmology which exist even for steep potentials. This opens up the possibility to realise quintessence models even when quantum corrections spoil the flatness of the underlying potential. These non-linear sigma models arise naturally in supergravity and string models where their multi-field dynamics can help to avoid swampland bounds.
In this paper, we have studied the dynamical aspects of some cosmological models in an isotropic space-time within the framework of an extended gravity theory. Two accelerating cosmological models are presented with quasi-de Sitter (QDS) and linear combination of exponential (LCE) scale factors. The geometrical testing mechanism has been performed and analysed. While the results of the QDS model show a departure from the concordant $Λ$CDM model, the resulting behavior of the LCE model seems to be compatible with the $Λ$CDM model only at the present epoch and is incompatible in the near past.
Quasi-local energies for constantly accelerating observers in Bañados, Teitelboim, and Zanelli (BTZ), Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes are derived. The energies are expressed in terms of acceleration, cosmological constant, and area, quantities measurable by the observers. Based on results from quantum fields in curved spacetime for the redshifted Hawking temperature, entropy and thermodynamic-like laws are briefly explored in the three spacetimes.
We introduce a quasidilaton scalar field to the minimal theory of massive gravity with the Minkowski fiducial metric, in such a way that the quasidilaton global symmetry is maintained and that the theory admits a stable self-accelerating de Sitter solution. We start with a precursor theory that contains three propagating gravitational degrees of freedom without a quasidilaton scalar and introduce Stückelberg fields to covariantize its action. This makes it possible for us to formulate the quasidilaton global symmetry that mixes the Stückelberg fields and the quasidilaton scalar field. By the H…
The minimal theory of quasidilaton massive gravity allows for a stable self-accelerating de Sitter solution in a wide range of parameters. On the other hand, in order for the theory to be compatible with local gravity tests, the fifth force due to the quasidilaton scalar needs to be screened at local scales. The present paper thus extends the theory by inclusion of a cubic Horndeski term in a way that (i) respects the quasidilaton global symmetry, that (ii) maintains the physical degrees of freedom in the theory being three, that (iii) can accommodate the Vainshtein screening mechanism and tha…
The recent simultaneous detection of gravitational waves and a gamma ray burst from a neutron star merger significantly shrank the space of viable scalar-tensor theories by demanding that the speed of gravity is equal to that of light. The survived theories belong to the class of degenerate higher order scalar-tensor theories. We study whether these theories are suitable as dark energy candidates. We find scaling solutions in the matter dominated universe that lead to de Sitter solutions at late times without the cosmological constant, realising self-acceleration. We evaluate quasi-static pert…
We extend investigations of infrared dynamics in accelerating universes. In the presence of massless and minimally coupled scalar fields, physical quantities may acquire growing time dependences through quantum fluctuations at super-horizon scales. From a semiclassical viewpoint, it was proposed that such infrared effects are described by a Langevin equation. In de Sitter space, the stochastic approach has been proved to be equivalent to resummation of the growing time dependences at the leading power. In this paper, we make the resummation derivation of the Langevin equation in a general acce…
Cosmological acceleration is difficult to accommodate in theories of fundamental interactions involving supergravity and superstrings. An alternative is that the acceleration is not universal but happens in a large localized region, which is possible in theories admitting regular black holes with de Sitter-like interiors. We considerably strengthen this scenario by placing it in a global anti-de Sitter background, where the formation of 'de Sitter bubbles' will be enhanced by mechanisms analogous to the Bizon-Rostworowski instability in general relativity. This opens an arena for discussing th…
We study mimetic $F(R)$ gravity with potential and Lagrange multiplier constraint. In the context of these theories, we introduce a reconstruction technique which enables us to realize arbitrary cosmologies, given the Hubble rate and an arbitrarily chosen $F(R)$ gravity. We exemplify our method by realizing cosmologies that are in concordance with current observations (Planck data) and also well known bouncing cosmologies. The attribute of our method is that the $F(R)$ gravity can be arbitrarily chosen, so we can have the appealing features of the mimetic approach combined with the known featu…
