To study the effect of a strong magnetic field $B$ on the sound velocity $v_{s}$ of plane waves propagating in a strongly magnetized quark-gluon plasma (QGP), a chiral magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) description of a perfect (non-dissipative) QGP exhibiting dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (D$χ$SB) is developed using the effective action of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model of QCD at finite temperature, finite baryon chemical potential and in the presence of a strong magnetic field. Here, the D$χ$SB arises due to the phenomenon of magnetic catalysis. Apart from an interesting frequency dependence, for plane waves propagating in the transverse or longitudinal direction with respect to the $B$ field, the sound velocity is anisotropic and depends on the angle between the corresponding wave vectors and the direction of the $B$ field. Moreover, for plane waves propagating in the transverse (longitudinal) direction to the external $B$ field, the sound velocity has a maximum (minimum) at $T<T_{c}$, reaches a local minimum (maximum) at $T\sim T_{c}$ and remains constant at $T\gtrsim T_{c}$. Here, $T_{c}$ is the critical temperature of the chiral phase transition. Thus, the constant value $v_{s}\sim 1.5 c_{s}$ at $T \gtrsim T_{c}$ turns out to be a lower (upper) bound for waves propagating in the transverse (longitudinal) direction with respect to the external $B$ field. Here, $c_{s}=1/\sqrt{3}$ is the sound velocity in an ideal gas.
The possible different phases of cold quark matter in the presence of a finite magnetic field and chemical potential are obtained within the SU(3) NJL model for two parameter sets often used in the literature. Although the general pattern is the same in both cases, the number of intermediate phases is parameter dependent. The chiral susceptibilities, as usually defined, are different not only for the s-quark as compared with the two light quarks, but also for the u and d-quarks, yielding non identical crossover lines for the light quark sector.
We study the effect of intense magnetic fields on the phase diagram of cold, strongly interacting matter within an extended version of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model that includes flavor mixing effects and vector interactions. Different values of the relevant model parameters in acceptable ranges are considered. Charge neutrality and beta equilibrium effects, which are specially relevant to the study of compact stars, are also taken into account. In this case the behavior of leptons is discussed.
The influence of intense magnetic fields on the behavior of color superconducting cold quark matter is investigated using an SU(2)$_f$ NJL-type model for which a novel regulation scheme is introduced. In such a scheme the contributions which are explicitly dependent on the magnetic field turn out to be finite and, thus, do not require to be regularized. As a result of this, nonphysical oscillations that might arise in the alternative regularization schemes previously used in the literature are naturally removed. The sensitivity of our results to the model parametrization is analyzed.
The properties of magnetized color superconducting cold dense quark matter under compact star conditions are investigated using a $SU(2)_f$ Nambu Jona-Lasinio (NJL)-type model in which the divergences are treated using a magnetic field independent regularization scheme in order to avoid unphysical oscillations. We study the phase diagram for several model parametrizations. The features of each phase are analyzed through the behavior of the chiral and superconducting condensates together with the different particle densities for increasing chemical potential or magnetic field. While confirming …
In pursuit of the sketching the effective magnetized QCD phase diagram, we found conditions on the critical coupling for chiral symmetry breaking in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in a nontrivial thermo-magnetic environment. Critical values for the plasma parameters, namely, temperature and magnetic field strength for this to happen are hence found in the mean field limit. The magnetized phase diagram is drawn from the criticality condition for different models of the effective coupling describing the inverse magnetic catalysis effect.
We study the effect of a strong constant magnetic field, generated in relativistic heavy ion collisions, on the heavy quark complex potential. We work in the strong magnetic field limit with the lowest Landau level approximation. We find that the screening of the real part of the potential increases with the increase in the magnetic field. Therefore, we expect less binding of the $ Q\bar{Q} $ pair in the presence of a strong magnetic field. The imaginary part of the potential increases in magnitude with the increase in the magnetic field, leading to an increase of the width of the quarkonium s…
A magnetic field independent regularization scheme (zMFIR) based on the Hurwitz-Riemann zeta function is introduced. The new technique is applied to the regularization of the mean-field thermodynamic potential and mass gap equation within the SU(2) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in a hot and magnetized medium. The equivalence of the new and the standard MFIR scheme is demonstrated. The neutral meson pole mass is calculated in a hot and magnetized medium and the advantages of using the new regularization scheme are shown.
Using the 2+1 flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with the Polyakov loop, we determine the structure of the QCD phase diagram in an external magnetic field. Beyond the usual NJL model with constant couplings, we also consider a variant with a magnetic field dependent scalar coupling, which reproduces the Inverse Magnetic Catalysis (IMC) at zero chemical potential. We conclude that the IMC affects the location of the Critical End Point, and found indications that, for high enough magnetic fields, the chiral phase transition at zero chemical potential might change from an analytic to a first-…
The self-consistent quasiparticle model has been successful in studying QCD thermodynamics. In this model, the medium effects are taken into account by considering quarks and gluons as quasiparticles with temperature-dependent masses which are proportional to the plasma frequency. The present work involves the extension of this model in the presence of magnetic fields. We have included the effect of the magnetic field by considering relativistic Landau Levels. The quasiparticle masses are then found to be dependent on both temperature and magnetic field. The thermomagnetic mass thus defined al…
Dilepton production rate (DPR) from hot and dense quark matter is studied in the presence of an arbitrary external magnetic field using the 2-flavour Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. The anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of the quarks is taken into consideration while calculating the constituent quark mass as well as the DPR from the thermo-magnetic medium. An infinite number of quark Landau levels is incorporated so that no approximations are made on the strength of the background magnetic field. The analytic structure of the two point vector current correlation function in the complex energy p…
We determine the baryon spectrum of 1 + 1 + 1-flavor QCD in the presence of strong background magnetic fields using lattice simulations at physical quark masses for the first time. Our results show a splitting within multiplets according to the electric charge of the baryons and reveal, in particular, a reduction of the nucleon masses for strong magnetic fields. This first-principles input is used to define constituent quark masses and is employed to set the free parameters of the Polyakov loop-extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model in a magnetic field-dependent manner. The so constructed mo…
We investigate the screening masses of neutral pions and sigma mesons in hot and magnetized quark matter in the framework of a two-flavor lattice-improved Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with a magnetic field dependent coupling constant, which is determined by utilizing the results from lattice QCD simulations. Since such model can well reproduce inverse magnetic catalysis (IMC), by comparing with the standard NJL model, we systemically analyze the impacts of IMC on the temperature and magnetic field dependences of the longitudinal and transverse screening masses of the chiral partners, i.e. π^…
In the framework of the Nambu--Jona-Lasino (NJL) model, we study the effect of an intense external uniform magnetic field on neutral and charged pion masses and decay form factors. In particular, the treatment of charged pions is carried out on the basis of the Ritus eigenfunction approach to magnetized relativistic systems. Our analysis shows that in the presence of the magnetic field three and four nonvanishing pion-to-vacuum hadronic form factors can be obtained for the case of the neutral and charged pions, respectively. As expected, it is seen that for nonzero magnetic field the $π^0$ mes…
The thermomagnetic behavior of quark-gluon plasma has recently received a lot of attention. In this work, we make use of the extended self-consistent quasiparticle model to study the thermodynamic properties of magnetized (2+1) flavor quark-gluon plasma. The system is considered as a non-interacting system of quasiparticles with masses depending on both temperature and magnetic field. This allows obtaining the equation of state of the system and the other thermodynamic properties such as the speed of sound. We use the extended self-consistent model to obtain the magnetization and show that QGP…
The phase structure of magnetized cold quark matter is analyzed in the framework of the two-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models paying special attention to its dependence on the model parameters as different values within the phenomenological allowed range are considered. We first discuss the simpler chiral limit case, and then the more realistic situation of finite current masses. We show that in spite of the difference in the nature of some transitions, both cases are alike and exhibit a rather rich phase structure for a significant range of acceptable parameters. A simplification of the phase …
The behavior of $π^0$ meson properties in the presence of a uniform external magnetic field is studied in the context of a nonlocal extension of the Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The analysis includes the $π^0$ mass, the effective $π^0$-quark coupling and the pion-to-vacuum hadronic form factors, both at zero and finite temperature. Numerical results are compared with previous calculations carried out within the local NJL model, when available. The validity of chiral relations and the features of deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration transitions are discussed.
We study the behavior of two-flavor dense quark matter under the influence of an external magnetic field in the framework of a nonlocal chiral quark model with separable interactions. The nonlocality is incorporated in the model by using a Gaussian form factor. It is found that for low and moderate values of magnetic field there is a decrease of the critical chiral restoration chemical potential $μ_c$, i.e. an inverse magnetic catalysis effect is observed. For larger values of $eB$ the behavior of $μ_c$ becomes more or less flat, depending on the parametrization. Within the considered parametr…
We investigate the vacuum structure of dense quark matter in strong magnetic fields at finite temperature and densities in a 3 flavor Nambu Jona Lasinio (NJL) model including the Kobayashi-Maskawa-t'Hooft (KMT) determinant term using a variational method. The method uses an explicit structure for the `ground' state in terms of quark-antiquark condensates as well as diquark condensates. The mass gap equations and the superconducting gap equations are solved self consistently and are used to compute the thermodynamic potential along with the charge neutrality conditions. We also derive the equat…
We study the regularization dependence of the Nambu-Jona--Lasinio model (NJL) predictions for some properties of magnetized quark matter at zero temperature (and baryonic density) in the mean field approximation. The model parameter dependence for each regularization procedure is also analyzed in detail. We calculate the average and difference of the quark condensates using different regularization methods and compare with recent lattice results. In this context, the reliability of the different regularization procedures is discussed.
In this work, we compute the hard thermal loop pressure of quark-gluon plasma within strong magnetic field approximation at one-loop order. Magnetic field breaks the rotational symmetry of the system. As a result, the pressure of QGP becomes anisotropic and one finds two different pressures along the longitudinal (along the magnetic field direction) and transverse direction. Similarly, the second-order quark number susceptibility, which represents the fluctuation of the net quark number density, also becomes anisotropic. We compute the second order QNS of deconfined QCD matter in strong field …
During heavy ion collisions, high temperatures and strong magnetic fields are generated. We employ the gauge-gravity duality to study the N_f=2 QCD phase diagram under these extreme conditions in the quenched approximation, in particular we use the non-antipodal Sakai-Sugimoto model (SSM). We take the different coupling of up and down flavours to the magnetic field into account geometrically, resulting in a split of the chiral phase transition according to flavour. We discuss the influence of the magnetic field on the chiral temperatures -in physical GeV units- in terms of the choice of the co…
In this study, we investigate the impact of the magnetic field on the evolution of the transverse flow of QGP matter in the magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) framework. We assume that the magnetic field is perpendicular to the reaction plane and then we solve the coupled Maxwell and conservation equations in (1+1D) transverse flow, within the Bjorken scenario. We consider a QGP with infinite electrical conductivity. First, the magnetic effects on the QGP medium at mid-rapidity are investigated at leading order; then the time and space dependence of the energy density, velocity and magnetic field in t…
The compressibility of magnetized quark matter is investigated in the SU(2) NJL model. The increases of the chemical potential and the temperature can reduce the compressibility, and lead to the much stiffer equation of state. The variation of the compressibility with the magnetic field will depend on the phase region. Due to the anisotropic structure, the compressibility is different in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the field. The discontinuity of longitudinal compressibility with the chemical potential and the temperature captures the signature of a first-order chiral phase tr…

We investigate properties of strange quark matter in the framework of SU(3) Nambu--Jona-Lasinio(NJL) model with vector interaction under strong magnetic fields. The effects of vector-isoscalar and vector-isovector interaction on the equation of state of strange quark matter are investigated, and it is found that the equation of state is not sensitive to the vector-isovector interaction, however, a repulsive interaction in the vector-isoscalar channel gives a stiffer equation of state for cold dense quark matter. In the presence of magnetic field, gluons will be magnetized via quark loops, and …

We study the properties of the shear viscosity coefficient of quark matter at finite temperature and chemical potential near chiral phase transition in a strong background magnetic field. A strong magnetic field induces anisotropic features, phase-space Landau-level quantization, and if the magnetic field is sufficiently strong, interferes with prominent QCD phenomena such as dynamical quark mass generation, likely affecting the quark matter transport characteristics. The modified Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with inverse magnetic catalysis effect by fitting the Lattice QCD (LQCD) results is…
The properties of non-interacting $σ$ and $π^{0}$ mesons are studied at finite temperature, chemical potential and in the presence of a constant magnetic field. To do this, the energy dispersion relations of these particles, including nontrivial form factors, are derived using a derivative expansion of the effective action of a two-flavor, hot and magnetized Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model up to second order. The temperature dependence of the pole and screening masses as well as the directional refraction indices of magnetized neutral mesons are explored for fixed magnetic fields and chemical …
Dilepton production from hot, dense and magnetized quark matter is studied using the three-flavor Polyakov loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model in which the anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of the quarks is also taken into consideration. This is done by first evaluating the thermo-magnetic spectral function of the vector current correlator employing the real time formalism of finite temperature field theory and the Schwinger proper time formalism. The constituent quark mass which goes as an input in the expression of the dilepton production rate (DPR), has been calculated using the th…
A two-flavor color superconducting (2SC) Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model is introduced at finite temperature T, chemical potential mu and in the presence of a constant magnetic field eB. The effect of (T,mu,eB) on the formation of chiral and color symmetry breaking condensates is studied. The complete phase portrait of the model in T-mu, mu-eB, and T-eB phase spaces for various fixed eB, T, and mu is explored. A threshold magnetic field eB_t~ 0.5 GeV^2 is found above which the dynamics of the system is solely dominated by the lowest Landau level (LLL) and the effects of T and mu are partly com…
Employing a field dependent three-momentum cut-off regularization technique, we study the phase structure and mesonic masses using the $2$-flavour Nambu-Jona Lasinio model at finite temperature and density in presence of arbitrary external magnetic field. This approach is then applied to incorporate the effects of the anomalous magnetic moment(AMM) of quarks on constituent quark mass and thermodynamic observables as a function of temperature/baryonic density. The critical temperature for transition from chiral symmetry broken to the restored phase is observed to decrease with the external magn…
We investigate the effect of electric and color charge neutrality on the two-flavor color superconducting (2SC) phase of cold and dense quark matter in presence of constant external magnetic fields and at moderate baryon densities. Within the framework of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model, we study the inter-dependent evolution of the quark's BCS gap and constituent mass with increasing density and magnetic field. While confirming previous results derived for the highly magnetized 2SC phase with color neutrality alone, we obtain new results as a consequence of imposing charge neutrality. In t…
We revisit three of the mathematical formalisms used to describe magnetized quark matter in compact objects within the MIT and the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models and then compare their results. The tree formalisms are based on 1) isotropic equations of state, 2) anisotropic equations of state with different parallel and perpendicular pressures and 3) the assumption of a chaotic field approximation that results in a truly isotropic equation of state. We have seen that the magnetization obtained with both models is very different: while the MIT model produces well-behaved curves that are always posit…
Some of the advances made in the literature to understand the phase transitions of quark matter in the presence of strong magnetic field and finite temperature (zero quark chemical potential) are reviewed. We start by discussing the physics behind the Magnetic catalysis (MC) at zero/finite temperature and then focus on the lattice predictions for inverse magnetic catalysis (IMC) at high temperature and strong magnetic fields. Possible explanations for the IMC are covered as well. Finally, we discuss recent efforts to modify QCD (quantum chromodynamics) effective models in order to reproduce th…
In this dissertation we use the gauge/gravity duality approach to study the dynamics of strongly coupled non-Abelian plasmas. Ultimately, we want to understand the properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), whose scientifc interest by the scientific community escalated exponentially after its discovery in the 2000's through the collision of ultrarelativistic heavy ions. One can enrich the dynamics of the QGP by adding an external field, such as the baryon chemical potential (needed to study the QCD phase diagram), or a magnetic field. In this dissertation, we choose to investigate the magneti…
We review the main features of the QCD phase diagram description, at finite temperature, baryon density and in the presence of a magnetic field, from the point of view of effective models, whose main ingredient is chiral symmetry. We concentrate our attention on two of these models: The linear sigma model with quarks and the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. We show that a main ingredient to understand the characteristics of the phase transitions is the inclusion of plasma screening effects that capture the physics of collective, long-wave modes, and thus describe a prime property of plasmas near tra…
We explore the effects of an external magnetic field in the structure and magnitude of the diquark condensate in a three massless quark flavor color superconductor. It is shown that the long-range component $\widetilde{B}$ of the external magnetic field that penetrates the color-flavor locked (CFL) phase modifies its gap structure, producing a new phase of lower symmetry. Our analysis is performed within an NJL effective field theory with four-fermion interactions, inspired by one-gluon exchange. Using Ritus' method, we compute the quark propagators in the presence of a background magnetic fie…
In ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, enormous magnetic fields are generated because of fast-moving charged particles. In the presence of these magnetic fields, the spin of particles is aligned either in the parallel or in the antiparallel direction with respect to the direction of the magnetic field. A finite magnetization is thus produced. It is known that a finite magnetic susceptibility, $χ_{m}$, changes the evolution of the energy density of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), which is believed to be created in these collisions. Depending on whether the system under consideration is a para…
In this work, we investigate not only the pole masses but also the screening masses of neutral pions at finite temperature and magnetic field by utilizing the random phase approximation (RPA) approach in the framework of the two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. And two equivalent formalisms in the presence of a magnetic field, i.e. the Landau level representation (LLR) and the proper-time representation (PTR), are applied to obtain the corresponding analytical expressions of the polarization functions (except the expressions for the pole masses in the PTR). In order to evaluate the appl…
In the present work we use the mean field approximation to investigate quark matter described by the su(3) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model subject to a strong magnetic field. We consider two cases: pure quark matter and quark matter in beta-equilibrium possibly present in magnetars. The results are compared with the ones obtained with the su(2) version of the model. The energy per baryon of magnetized quark matter becomes more bound than nuclear matter made of iron nuclei, for B around 2x10^(19)G. When the su(3) NJL model is applied to stellar matter, the maximum mass configurations are always above …
