Using chiral anomaly, we discuss the pair creation of massless fermions in an electric flux tube $\vec{E}$ under homogeneous magnetic field $\vec{B}$ parallel to $\vec{E}$. The tube is axial symmetric and infinitely long in longitudinal direction. In the limit $B\gg E$, we can analytically obtain the spatial and temporal behaviors of the electric field and azimuthal magnetic field generated by the produced fermions. We find that the life time $t_c$ of the electric field is shorter as the width of the tube is narrower. Applying it to the glasma in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, we find that color electric field decays fast such as $t_c\simeq Q_s^{-1}$ with saturation momentum $Q_s$.
Using chiral anomaly, we discuss the pair creation of massless fermions under the effect of magnetic field $\vec{B}$ when an electric flux tube $\vec{E}$ parallel to $\vec{B}$ is switched on. The tube is axial symmetric and infinitely long. In the limit $B\gg E$, we can analytically obtain the spatial and temporal behaviors of the number density of the fermions, the azimuthal magnetic field generated by the fermions etc.. We find that the life time $t_c$ of the electric field is shorter as the width of the tube is narrower. Applying it to the glasma in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, we find…
Creation of charged massless fermion pair by a photon in external constant crossed electromagnetic field is considered. For this we use the expression of elastic scattering amplitude (EAS) of photon in the one-loop approximation of massive quantum electrodynamics obtained earlier and calculate its massless limit. We assume that the imaginary part of EAS of photon describes the total probability of charged massless fermion pair creation in external electromagnetic field. Photon emission by a charged massless fermion is also studied in constant crossed electromagnetic field. We obtain the total …
We study the massless limit in synchrotron radiation and one-photon pair creation in magnetic field. In this limit Schwinger critical field $H_0=m^2c^3/(e\hbar)$ tends to zero, so two characteristic quantum parameters $η=H/H_0,\;χ=ηE/mc^2$ are infinite, and the standard approximations used in analytical calculations fail. Applying Schwinger's proper time methods we derive simple expressions for synchrotron radiation spectra emitted by massless charges of spins $s=0,\,1/2$ and the pair creation probability distribution in the quasiclassical (high Landau levels) regime exhibiting simple scaling …
We discuss the Schwinger pair creation process for the system of massless Dirac fermions in the presence of constant external magnetic and electric fields. The pair production rate remains finite unlike the vacuum decay rate. In the recently discovered Dirac semimetals, where the massless Dirac fermions emerge, this pair production may be observed experimentally through the transport properties. We estimate its contribution to the ordinary conductivity of the semimetals.
We bootstrap the S-matrix of massless particles in unitary, relativistic two dimensional quantum field theories. We find that the low energy expansion of such S-matrices is strongly constrained by the existence of a UV completion. In the context of flux tube physics, this allows us to constrain several terms in the S-matrix low energy expansion or -- equivalently -- on Wilson coefficients of several irrelevant operators showing up in the flux tube effective action. These bounds have direct implications for other physical quantities; for instance, they allow us to further bound the ground state…
Pair creation in a uniform classical electromagnetic field (Schwinger mechanism) is studied focusing on the time evolution of the distribution of created particles. The time evolution of the distribution in time-dependent fields is also presented as well as effects of back reaction. Motivated by the Glasma flux tube, which may be formed at the initial stage of heavy-ion collisions, we investigate effects of a magnetic field parallel to an electric field, and find that the magnetic field makes the evolution of a fermion system faster.
The color flux tube connecting a static quark-anti-quark pair in Yang-Mills theory supports massless transverse fluctuations, which are the Goldstone bosons of spontaneously broken translation invariance. Just as in chiral perturbation theory, the dynamics of these Goldstone bosons is described by a systematic low-energy effective field theory. We use the effective theory to calculate the width of the fluctuating string at the 2-loop level, using both cylindrical and toroidal boundary conditions. At zero temperature, the string width diverges logarithmically with the quark-anti-quark distance …
We study quark-pair creations in strong color electromagnetic fields. We point out that, for massless quarks, the vacuum persistency probability per unit space-time volume is zero, i.e., the quark-pair creation rate w is infinite, in general homogeneous color electromagnetic fields, while it is finite when the color magnetic field is absent. We find that the contribution from the lowest Landau level (LLL) dominates this phenomenon. With an effective theory of the LLL projection, we also discuss dynamics of the vacuum decay, taking into account the back reaction of pair creations.
Creation of charged fermion pair from a vacuum in the so-called supercritical Coulomb potential is examined for the case when created pair moves in one plane. In which case the quantum dynamics of charged massive or massless fermions can be described by the two-dimensional Dirac Hamiltonians with a Coulomb potential. These Hamiltonians are singular and require the additional definition in order for them to be treated as self-adjoint quantum-mechanical operators. We construct the self-adjoint two-dimensional Dirac Hamiltonians with a Coulomb potential and determine the quantum-mechanical states…
We study the particle creation process in the Schwinger model coupled with an external classical source. One can approach the problem by taking advantage that the full quantized model is solvable and equivalent to a (massive) gauge field with a non-local effective action. Alternatively, one can also face the problem following the standard semiclassical route. This means quantizing the massless Dirac field and considering the electromagnetic field as a classical background. We evaluate the energy created by a generic, homogeneous, and time-dependent source. The results exactly match in both app…
Particle-antiparticle pairs can be produced by background electric fields via the Schwinger mechanism provided they are unconfined. If, as in QED in (3+1)-$d$ these particles are massive, the particle production rate is exponentially suppressed below a threshold field strength. Above this threshold, the energy for pair creation must come from the electric field itself which ought to eventually relax to the threshold strength. Calculating this relaxation in a self-consistent manner, however, is difficult. Chu and Vachaspati addressed this problem in the context of capacitor discharge in massles…
Acoustic perturbations in an expanding hadronic fluid at temperatures below the chiral transition point represent massless pions propagating in curved spacetime geometry. In comoving coordinates the corresponding analog metric tensor describes a hyperbolic FRW spacetime. We study the analog cosmological particle creation of pions below the critical point of the chiral phase transition. We compare the cosmological creation spectrum with the spectrum of analog Hawking radiation at the analog trapping horizon.
We study tunneling pair creation of W-Bosons by an external electric field on the Coulomb branch of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We use AdS/CFT holography to find a generalization of Schwinger's formula for the pair production rate to the strong coupling, planar limit which includes the exchange of virtual massless particles to all orders. We find that the pair creation formula has an upper critical electric field beyond which the process is no longer exponentially suppressed. The value of the critical field is identical to that which occurs in the Born-Infeld action of probe D3-brane…
Color-flavor locked (CFL) quark matter expels color-magnetic fields due to the Meissner effect. One of these fields carries an admixture of the ordinary abelian magnetic field and therefore flux tubes may form if CFL matter is exposed to a magnetic field, possibly in the interior of neutron stars or in quark stars. We employ a Ginzburg-Landau approach for three massless quark flavors, which takes into account the multi-component nature of color superconductivity. Based on the weak-coupling expressions for the Ginzburg-Landau parameters, we identify the regime where CFL is a type-II color super…
The present manuscript discusses a remarkable phenomenon concerning non-linear and non-integrable field theories in $(3+1)$-dimensions, living at finite density and possessing non-trivial topological charges and non-Abelian internal symmetries (both local and global). With suitable types of ansätze, one can construct infinite-dimensional families of analytic solutions with non-vanishing topological charges (representing the Baryonic number) labelled by both two integers numbers and by free scalar fields in $(1+1)$-dimensions. These exact configurations represent $(3+1)$-dimensional topological…
