In this paper we analyze symmetries, hidden symmetries, and commensurability classes of $(ε, d_L)$-twisted knot complements, which are the complements of knots that have a sufficiently large number of twists in each of their twist regions. These knot complements can be constructed via long Dehn fillings on fully augmented links complements. We show that such knot complements have no hidden symmetries, which implies that there are at most two other knot complements in their respective commensurability classes. Under mild additional hypotheses, we show that these knots have at most four (orienta…
We present a notion of mutation of hyperbolic polyhedra, analogous to mutation in knot theory, and then present a general question about commensurability of mutant pairs of polyhedra. We motivate that question with several concrete examples of mutant pairs for which commensurability is unknown. The polyhedra we consider are compact, so techniques involving cusps that are typically used to distinguishing mutant pairs of knots are not applicable. Indeed, new techniques may need to be developed to study commensurability of mutant pairs of polyhedra.
In this paper, we show that any non-arithmetic hyperbolic $2$-bridge link complement admits no hidden symmetries. As a corollary, we conclude that a hyperbolic $2$-bridge link complement cannot irregularly cover a hyperbolic $3$-manifold. By combining this corollary with the work of Boileau and Weidmann, we obtain a characterization of $3$-manifolds with non-trivial JSJ-decomposition and rank two fundamental groups. We also show that the only commensurable hyperbolic $2$-bridge link complements are the figure-eight knot complement and the $6_{2}^{2}$ link complement. Our work requires a carefu…
In this paper we study some consequences of the author's classification of graph manifolds by their profinite fundamental groups. In particular we study commensurability, the behaviour of knots, and relation to mapping classes. We prove that the exteriors of graph knots are distinguished among all 3-manifold groups by their profinite fundamental groups. We also prove a strong conjugacy separability result for certain mapping classes of surfaces.
We consider the following question: when is the manifold obtained by gluing together two knot complements an $L$-space? Hedden and Levine proved that splicing 0-framed complements of nontrivial knots never produces an $L$-space. We extend this result to allow for arbitrary integer framings. We find that splicing two integer framed nontrivial knot complements only produces an $L$-space if both knots are $L$-space knots and the framings lie in an appropriate range. The proof involves a careful analysis of the bordered Heegaard Floer invariants of each knot complement.
We show that Bordered Heegaard Floer invariant $\widehat{CFD}$ of a knot complement in $S^3$ is invariant under the elliptic involution on its boundary.
We establish a pair of criteria for proving that most knot complements obtained as Dehn fillings of a given two-component hyperbolic link complement lack hidden symmetries. To do this, we use certain rational functions on varieties associated to the link. We apply our criteria to show that among certain infinite families of knot complements, all but finitely many members lack hidden symmetries.
We show the existence of infinitely many prime knots each of which having in their complements meridional essential surfaces with two boundary components and arbitrarily high genus.
In the bordered Floer theory, gluing thickened torus of positive meridional Dehn twist to the boundary of a knot complement result in the knot complement of increased framing. For a fixed knot K, we construct a direct system of positively framed knot complements and study the direct limit. We also study the morphism space between two type-DD modules, and derive type-DA morphisms from DD morphisms to derive the direct system maps. In addition, we introduce a direct limit invariant from the direct system which can detect non-unstable chains in the type-D module of a knot complement, if the type-…
Let $K$ denote a knot inside the homology sphere $Y$ and $K'$ denote a knot inside a homology sphere $L$-space. Let $X=Y(K,K')$ denote the 3-manifold obtained by splicing the complements of $K$ and $K'$. We show that $\text{rank}(\widehat{HF}(X)) \ge \text{rank}(\widehat{HF}(Y))$.
We develop a word mechanism applied in knot and link diagrams for the illustration of a diagrammatic property. We also give a necessary condition for determining incompressible and pairwise incompressible surfaces, that are embedded in knot or link complements. Finally, we give a finiteness theorem and an upper bound on the Euler characteristic of such surfaces.
Neumann and Reid conjecture that there are exactly three knot complements which admit hidden symmetries. This paper establishes several results that provide evidence for the conjecture. Our main technical tools provide obstructions to having infinitely many fillings of a cusped manifold produce knot complements admitting hidden symmetries. Applying these tools, we show for any two-bridge link complement, at most finitely many fillings of one cusp can be covered by knot complements admitting hidden symmetries. We also show that the figure-eight knot complement is the unique knot complement with…
It is known that a knot complement can be decomposed into ideal octahedra along a knot diagram. A solution to the gluing equations applied to this decomposition gives a pseudo-developing map of the knot complement, which will be called a pseudo-hyperbolic structure. In this paper, we study these in terms of segment and region variables which are motivated by the volume conjecture so that we can compute complex volumes of all the boundary parabolic representations explicitly. We investigate the octahedral developing and holonomy representation carefully, and obtain a concrete formula of Wirting…
It is experimentally known that achiral hyperbolic 3-manifolds are quite sporadic at least among those with small volume, while we can find plenty of them as amphicheiral knot complements in the 3-sphere. In this paper, we show that there exist infinitely many achiral 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds not homeomorphic to any amphicheiral null-homologous knot complement in any closed achiral 3-manifold.
In this paper, we consider the knot complement problem for not null-homologous knots in homology lens spaces. Let $M$ be a homology lens space with $H_1(M; \mathbb{Z}) \cong \mathbb{Z}_p$ and $K$ a not null-homologous knot in $M$. We show that $K$ is determined by its complement if $M$ is non-hyperbolic, $K$ is hyperbolic, and $p$ is a prime more than 7, or, if $M$ is actually a lens space $L(p,q)$ and $K$ represents a generator of $H_1(L(p,q))$.

In this paper we investigate the question of when different surgeries on a knot can produce identical manifolds. We show that given a knot in a homology sphere, unless the knot is quite special, there is a bound on the number of slopes that can produce a fixed manifold that depends only on this fixed manifold and the homology sphere the knot is in. By finding a different bound on the number of slopes, we show that non-null-homologous knots in certain homology $\mathbb{R}P^3$'s are determined by their complements. We also prove the surgery characterisation of the unknot for null-homologous knot…
This note corrects the mistakes in the splicing formulas of the paper "Floer homology and splicing knot complements". The mistakes are the result of the incorrect assumption that for a knot $K$ inside a homology sphere $Y$, the involution on the knot Floer homology of $K$ which corresponds to moving the basepoints by one full twist around $K$ is trivial. The correction implicitly involves considering the contribution from this (possibly non-trivial) involution in a number of places.
This paper completes a classification of the types of orientable and non-orientable cusps that can arise in the quotients of hyperbolic knot complements. In particular, $S^2(2,4,4)$ cannot be the cusp cross-section of any orbifold quotient of a hyperbolic knot complement. Furthermore, if a knot complement covers an orbifold with a $S^2(2,3,6)$ cusp, it also covers an orbifold with a $S^2(3,3,3)$ cusp. We end with a discussion that shows all cusp types arise in the quotients of link complements.

设K是闭可定向不可约3-流形M中的纽结,P是亏格至少为2的纽结补的Heegaard分裂.设Q是K的桥曲面。然后,要么\begin{itemize} \item $d(P)\leq 2-χ(Q-K)$, or \item K can be isotoped to be disjoint from Q so that after the isotopy Q is a Heegaard surface for the knot exterior and is isotopic to a possibly stabilized copy of P. \end{itemize}
In this article, we investigate the problem of counting totally geodesic surfaces in the complement of hyperbolic knots with at most 9 crossings. Adapting previous counting techniques of boundary slope and intersection, we establish uniqueness of a totally geodesic surface for the knots $7_4$ and $9_{35}$. Extending an obstruction to the existence of totally geodesic surfaces due to Calegari, we show that there is no totally geodesic surface in the complement of 47 knots.
In this paper we look at the knot complement problem for L-space $\mathbb{Z}$-homology spheres. We show that an L-space $\mathbb{Z}$-homology sphere $Y$ cannot be obtained as a non-trivial surgery along a knot $K\subset Y$. As a consequence, we prove that knots in an L-space $\mathbb{Z}$-homology sphere are determined by their complements.
We give a rational surgery formula for the Casson-Walker invariant of a 2-component link in $S^{3}$ which is a generalization of Matveev-Polyak's formula. As application, we give more examples of non-hyperbolic L-space $M$ such that knots in $M$ are determined by their complements. We also apply the result for the cosmetic crossing conjecture.
We determine the action of the Kauffman bracket skein algebra of the torus on the Kauffman bracket skein module of the complement of the 3-twist knot. The point is to study the relationship between knot complements and their boundary tori, an idea that has proved very fruitful in knot theory. We place this idea in the context of Chern-Simons theory, where such actions arose in connection with the computation of the noncommutative version of the A-polynomial that was defined by Frohman, Gelca and Lofaro, but they can also be interpreted as quantum mechanical systems. Our goal is to exhibit a de…
This paper considers "geometric" ideal triangulations of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds, i.e. decompositions into positive volume ideal hyperbolic tetrahedra. We exhibit infinitely many geometric ideal triangulations of the figure eight knot complement. As far as we know, this is the first construction of infinitely many geometric triangulations of a cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold. In contrast, our approach does not extend to the figure eight sister manifold, and it is unknown if there are infinitely many geometric triangulations for this manifold.
