We present a model for the formation of silicon carbide aggregates within the expanding and cooling supernova remnant. Many SiC-X grains have been found to be aggregates of smaller crystals which are isotopically homogenous. The initial condensation of SiC in the ejecta occurs within a interior dense shell of material which is created by a reverse shock which rebounds from the core-envelope interface. A subsequent reverse shock accelerates the grains forward, but the gas drag from the ejecta on the rapidly moving particles limits their travel distance. By observing the effects of gas drag on the travel distance of grains, we propose that supernova grain aggregates form from material that condensed in a highly localized region, which satisfies the observational evidence of isotopic homogeneity in SiC-X grains.
Stardust grains that originated in ancient stars and supernovae are recovered from meteorites and carry the detailed composition of their astronomical sites of origin. We present evidence that the majority of large ($μ$m-sized) meteoritic silicon carbide (SiC) grains formed in C-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars that were more metal-rich than the Sun. In the framework of the slow neutron-captures (the s process) that occurs in AGB stars the lower-than-solar 88Sr/86Sr isotopic ratios measured in the large SiC grains can only be accompanied by Ce/Y elemental ratios that are also lower tha…
Isotope ratios can be measured in presolar SiC grains from ancient Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars at permil-level (0.1\%) precision. Such precise grain data permit derivation of more stringent constraints and calibrations on mixing efficiency in AGB models than traditional spectroscopic observations. In this paper we compare SiC heavy-element isotope ratios to a new series of FRUITY models that include the effects of mixing triggered by magnetic fields. Based on 2D and 3D simulations available in the literature, we propose a new formulation, upon which the general features of mixing induc…
We report NanoSIMS Si and Mg-Al isotopic data (and C, N, and Ti isotopic data when available) for 85 submicron- to micron-sized presolar SiC grains from the CM2 Murchison meteorite, including 60 MS, 8 AB1, 8 X, 7 AB2, and 2 Y grains. The MS and Y grain data demonstrate that (1) C and N contamination mainly appears as surface contamination, and sufficient presputtering is needed to expose a clean grain surface for obtaining intrinsic C and N signals, and (2) Mg and Al contamination appears as adjacent grains and rims, and high-resolution imaging and the choice of small regions of interest durin…
This study on presolar grains compares high-precision isotopic compositions of individual SiC grains with low 12C/13C ratios, low 14N/15N ratios, large 30Si excesses and high 26Al/27Al ratios, available in the presolar grain database, to new CO nova models with white dwarf (WD) masses from 0.6-1.35M_sol. The models were designed to match the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) high dispersion spectra acquired for nova V5668 Sgr (Starrfield et al. 2018). These CO nova models provide elemental abundances up to calcium and include mixing of WD material into the accreted material in a binary star syst…
The vast majority (>=90%) of presolar SiC grains identified in primitive meteorites are relics of ancient asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, whose ejecta were incorporated into the Solar System during its formation. Detailed characterization of these ancient stardust grains has revealed precious information on mixing processes in AGB interiors in great detail. However, the mass and metallicity distribution of their parent stars still remains ambiguous, although such information is crucial to investigating the slow neutron capture process, whose efficiency is mass- and metallicity-dependent. …
The formation of bimodal dust species (namely the silicate and amorphous carbon dust grains coexistent) in a nova eruption is an open problem. According to the nova model simulated by Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics code, we calculate the formation and growth of carbon (C) and forsterite (Mg2SiO4) dust grains purely in nova ejecta for the fee-expansion model and the radiative shock model by assuming spherical geometry of the nova ejecta. In these models, the chemical properties of pre-existing circumstellar medium are not taken into account. In the free-expansion model, the nov…
The isotopic compositions of ruthenium (Ru) are measured from presolar silicon carbide (SiC) grains. In a popular scenario, the presolar SiC grains formed in the outskirt of an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star, left the star as a stellar wind, and joined the presolar molecular cloud from which the solar system formed. The Ru isotopes formed inside the star, moved to the stellar surface during the AGB phase, and were locked into the SiC grains. Following this scenario, we analyze the NuGrid data which provide the abundances of the Ru isotopes in the stellar wind for a set of stars in a wide r…
We present the isotope yields of two post-explosion, three-dimensional 15 $M_\odot$ core-collapse supernova models, 15S and 15A, and compare them to the carbon, nitrogen, silicon, aluminum, sulfur, calcium, titanium, iron, and nickel isotopic compositions of SiC stardust. We find that these core-collapse supernova models predict similar carbon and nitrogen compositions to SiC X grains and grains with $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C $<$ 20 and $^{14}$N/$^{15}$N $<$ 60, which we will hereafter refer to as SiC 'D' grains. Material from the interior of a 15 $M_\odot$ explosion reaches high enough temperatures s…
Presolar grains are microscopic dust grains that formed in the stellar winds or explosions of ancient stars that died before the formation of the solar system. The majority (~90% in number) of presolar silicon carbide (SiC) grains, including types mainstream (MS), Y, and Z, came from low-mass C-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, which is supported by the ubiquitous presence of SiC dust observed in the circumstellar envelope of AGB stars and the signatures of slow neutron-capture process preserved in these grains. Here, we review the status of isotope studies of presolar AGB SiC grains w…
Presolar silicon carbide (SiC) grains in meteoritic samples can help constrain circumstellar condensation processes and conditions in C-rich stars and core-collapse supernovae. This study presents our findings on eight presolar SiC grains from AGB stars (four mainstream and one Y grain) and core-collapse supernovae (three X grains), chosen on the basis of μ-Raman spectral features that were indicative of their having unusual non-3C polytypes and/or high degrees of crystal disorder. Analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which provides elemental compositional and structural informat…
Certain types of silicon carbide (SiC) grains, e.g., SiC-X grains, and low density (LD) graphites are C-rich presolar grains that are thought to have condensed in the ejecta of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe). In this work we compare C, N, Al, Si, and Ti isotopic abundances measured in presolar grains with the predictions of 21 CCSN models. The impact of a range of SN explosion energies is considered, with the high energy models favouring the formation of a C/Si zone enriched in $^{12}$C, $^{28}$Si, and $^{44}$Ti. Eighteen of the 21 models have H ingested into the He-shell and different abund…
We study the formation of dust in the expanding gas ejected as a result of a common envelope binary interaction. In our novel approach, we apply the dust formation model of Nozawa et al. to the outputs of the 3D hydrodynamic SPH simulation performed by Iaconi et al., that involves a giant of 0.88~\ms \ and 83~\rs, with a companion of 0.6~\ms \ placed on the surface of the giant in circular orbit. After simulating the dynamic in-spiral phase we follow the expansion of the ejecta for $\simeq 18\,000$~days. During this period the gas is able to cool down enough to reach dust formation temperature…
We present high angular resolution (~80 mas) ALMA continuum images of the SN 1987A system, together with CO $J$=2 $\!\rightarrow\!$ 1, $J$=6 $\!\rightarrow\!$ 5, and SiO $J$=5 $\!\rightarrow\!$ 4 to $J$=7 $\!\rightarrow\!$ 6 images, which clearly resolve the ejecta (dust continuum and molecules) and ring (synchrotron continuum) components. Dust in the ejecta is asymmetric and clumpy, and overall the dust fills the spatial void seen in H$α$ images, filling that region with material from heavier elements. The dust clumps generally fill the space where CO $J$=6 $\!\rightarrow\!$ 5 is fainter, ten…
We have conducted a NanoSIMS-based search for presolar material in samples recently returned from C-type asteroid Ryugu as part of JAXA's Hayabusa2 mission. We report the detection of all major presolar grain types with O- and C-anomalous isotopic compositions typically identified in carbonaceous chondrite meteorites: 1 silicate, 1 oxide, 1 O-anomalous supernova grain of ambiguous phase, 38 SiC, and 16 carbonaceous grains. At least two of the carbonaceous grains are presolar graphites, whereas several grains with moderate C isotopic anomalies are probably organics. The presolar silicate was lo…
Observations of the ejecta of core-collapse supernovae have shown that dust grains form in over-dense gas clumps in the expanding ejecta. The clumps are later subject to the passage of the reverse shock and a significant amount of the newly formed dust material can be destroyed due to the high temperatures and high velocities in the post-shock gas. To determine dust survival rates, we have performed a set of hydrodynamic simulations using the grid-based code AstroBEAR in order to model a shock wave interacting with a clump of gas and dust. Afterwards, dust motions and dust destruction rates ar…

Recent studies have shown that live (not decayed) radioactive $^{60}$Fe is present in deep-ocean samples, Antarctic snow, lunar regolith, and cosmic rays. $^{60}$Fe represents supernova (SN) ejecta deposited in the Solar System around $3 \, \rm Myr$ ago, and recently an earlier pulse $\approx 7 \ \rm Myr $ ago has been found. These data point to one or multiple near-Earth SN explosions that presumably participated in the formation of the Local Bubble. We explore this theory using 3D high-resolution smooth-particle hydrodynamical simulations of isolated supernovae with ejecta tracers in a unifo…
