Let k=F_q be a finite field of characteristic 2. A genus 3 curve C/k has many involutions if the group of k-automorphisms admits a C_2\times C_2 subgroup H (not containing the hyperelliptic involution if C is hyperelliptic). Then C is an Artin-Schreier cover of the three elliptic curves obtained as the quotient of C by the nontrivial involutions of H, and the Jacobian of C is k-isogenous to the product of these three elliptic curves. In this paper we exhibit explicit models for genus 3 curves with many involutions, and we compute explicit equations for the elliptic quotients. We then characterize when a triple (E_1,E_2,E_3) of elliptic curves admits an Artin-Schreier cover by a genus 3 curve, and we apply this result to the construction of maximal curves. As a consequence, when q is nonsquare and m=\lfloor 2 sqrt(q) \rfloor = 1,5,7 mod 8, we obtain that N_q(3)=1+q+3m. We also show that this occurs for an infinite number of values of q nonsquare.
In this note, we characterize certain maximal superspecial curves of genus $5$ over finite fields. Specifically, we prove that the desingularization $T_p$ of $x y z^3 + x^5 + y^5 = 0$ is a maximal superspecial trigonal curve of genus $5$ if and only if $p \equiv -1 \pmod{15}$ or $p \equiv 11 \pmod{15}$. Moreover, we give families of maximal curves of more general type, which include $T_p$.
The aim of this note is to revisit the question of local-global principles for embeddings of etale algebras with involution into central simple algebras with involution over global fields of characteristic not 2. A necessary and sufficient condition is given in a joint paper with Tingyu Lee and Raman Parimala. In the present paper, we give a simpler description of the obstruction group. It is also shown that if the etale algebra is a product of pairwise independent field extensions, then the Hasse principle holds.

A necessary and sufficient condition is given in [BLP 18]. In the present paper, we give a simpler description of the obstruction group. It is also shown that if the etale algebra is a product of pairwise linearly disjoint field extensions, then the Hasse principle holds, and that if an embedding exists after an odd degree extension, then it also exists over the global field itself. …
We study a mass formula for Artin--Schreier curves of genus $g$ defined over a finite field $k$ of characteristic $p$. For an odd prime $p$ and for small $g$, we determine the number of $k$-isomorphism classes of Artin-Schreier curves of genus $g$, weighted by the order of the centralizer of the Artin-Schreier involution in the automorphism group. This extends earlier results by several authors in characteristic $p=2$. Keywords: Artin-Schreier curve, finite field, automorphism, Mass formula, moduli space, arithmetic statistics
We use the method of quadratic Chabauty on the quotients $X_0^+(N)$ of modular curves $X_0(N)$ by their Fricke involutions to provably compute all the rational points of these curves for prime levels $N$ of genus four, five, and six. We find that the only such curves with exceptional rational points are of levels $137$ and $311$. In particular there are no exceptional rational points on those curves of genus five and six. More precisely, we determine the rational points on the curves $X_0^+(N)$ for $N=137,173,199,251,311,157,181,227,263,163,197,211,223,269,271,359$.
For a quadratic extension $K$ of ${\mathbb Q}$, we consider orders $O$ in $K$ that are not necessarily maximal and the ideal class group $Cl^+(O)$ in the narrow sense of proper ideals of $O$. Characters of $Cl^+(O)$ of order at most two are traditionally called genus characters. Explicit description of such characters is known classically, but explicit $L$-functions associated to those characters are only recently obtained partially by Chinta and Offen and completely by Kaneko and Mizuno. As remarked in the latter paper, the present author also obtained the formula of such $L$-functions indepe…
Let $F$ be the maximal totally real subfield of $\mathbf{Q}(ζ_{32})$, the cyclotomic field of $32$nd roots of unity. Let $D$ be the quaternion algebra over $F$ ramified exactly at the unique prime above $2$ and 7 of the real places of $F$. Let $\mathcal{O}$ be a maximal order in $D$, and $X_0^D(1)$ the Shimura curve attached to $\mathcal{O}$. Let $C = X_0^D(1)/\langle w_D \rangle$, where $w_D$ is the unique Atkin-Lehner involution on $X_0^D(1)$. We show that the curve $C$ has several striking features. First, it is a hyperelliptic curve of genus $16$, whose hyperelliptic involution is exceptio…
The formulas for local root numbers of abelian varieties of dimension one are known. In this paper we treat the simplest unknown case in dimension two by considering a curve of genus 2 defined over a $5$-adic field such that the inertia acts on the first $\ell$-adic cohomology group through the largest possible finite quotient, isomorphic to $C_5\rtimes C_8$. We give a few criteria to identify such curves and prove a formula for their local root numbers in terms of invariants associated to a Weierstrass equation.
Stark-Heegner points, also known as Darmon points, were introduced by H. Darmon as certain local points on rational elliptic curves, conjecturally defined over abelian extensions of real quadratic fields. The rationality conjecture for these points is only known in the unramified case, namely, when these points are specializations of global points defined over the strict Hilbert class field $H^+_F$ of the real quadratic field $F$ and twisted by (unramified) quadratic characters of $Gal(H_c^+/F)$. We extend these results to the situation of ramified quadratic characters; more precisely, we show…
