We have investigated the phase transition in the Heisenberg spin glass using massive numerical simulations to study larger sizes, 48x48x48, than have been attempted before at a spin glass phase transition. A finite-size scaling analysis indicates that the data is compatible with the most economical scenario: a common transition temperature for spins and chiralities.
We use Monte Carlo simulations to study the one-dimensional long-range diluted Heisenberg spin glass with interactions that fall as a power, sigma, of the distance. Varying the power is argued to be equivalent to varying the space dimension of a short-range model. We are therefore able to study both the mean-field and non-mean-field regimes. For one value of sigma, in the non-mean-field regime, we find evidence that the chiral glass transition temperature may be somewhat higher than the spin glass transition temperature. For the other values of sigma we see no evidence for this.
The glassy behavior observed in the pyrochlore magnet Y2Mo2O7, where the magnetic Mo^{4+} ions interact predominantly via isotropic nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange, possibly with additional weak disorder, is a distinct class of spin glass systems where frustration is mostly geometrical. A model proposed to describe such a spin glass behavior is the Heisenberg model on a pyrochlore lattice with random but strictly antiferromagnetic exchange disorder. In this paper, we provide compelling numerical evidence from extensive Monte Carlo simulations which show that the model exhibits a fi…
Recent work suggests that Heisenberg spin glasses may belong to the same universality class than structural glasses. Indeed, finding a lattice equivalent for supercooled liquids would probably allow easier numerical and analytical studies, that may help to answer long-standing questions on the glass transition. Supercooled liquids have many peculiar behaviors that should be found in the paramagnetic phase of Heisenberg spin glasses if the analogy between the two systems holds. It is with this motivation that we undertake a study of the paramagnetic phase of Heisenberg spin glasses. We shall em…
An overview is given of experimental data on Heisenberg Spin Glass materials so as to make detailed comparisons with numerical results on model Heisenberg spin glasses, with particular reference to the chiral driven ordering transition scenario due to Kawamura and collaborators. On weak anisotropy systems, experiments show critical exponents which are very similar to those estimated numerically for the model Heisenberg chiral ordering transition but which are quite different from those at Ising spin glass transitions. Again on weak anisotropy Heisenberg spin glasses, experimental torque data s…
We perform a finite size scaling study of the three-dimensional Heisenberg spin glass in the presence of weak random anisotropic interactions, up to sizes L=32. Anisotropies have a major impact on the phase transition. The chiral-glass susceptibility does not diverge, due to a large anomalous dimension. It follows that the anisotropic spin-glass belongs to a Universality Class different from the isotropic model, which questions the applicability of the chirality scenario.
We study the issue of the spin-chirality decoupling/coupling in the ordering of the Heisenberg spin glass by performing large-scale Monte Carlo simulations on a one-dimensional Heisenberg spin-glass model with a long-range power-law interaction up to large system sizes. We find that the spin-chirality decoupling occurs for an intermediate range of the power-law exponent. Implications to the corresponding $d$-dimensional short-range model is discussed.
Ordering of the Heisenberg spin glass in four dimensions (4D) with the nearest-neighbor Gaussian coupling is investigated by equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations, with particular attention to its spin and chiral orderings. It is found that the spin and the chirality order simultaneously with a common correlation-length exponent $ν_{CG}=ν_{SG}\simeq 1.0$, i.e., the absence of the spin-chirality decoupling in 4D. Yet, the spin-glass ordered state exhibits a nontrivial phase-space structure associated with a continuous one-step-like replica-symmetry breaking, different in nature from that of the I…
We describe different implementations of the 3D Heisenberg spin glass model for Graphics Processing Units (GPU). The results show that the {\em fast} shared memory gives better performance with respect to the {\em slow} global memory only if a multi-hit technique is used.
By means of parallel tempering Monte Carlo simulations we find strong evidence for a finite-temperature spin-glass transition in a system of diluted classical Heisenberg dipoles randomly placed on the sites of a simple cubic lattice. We perform a finite-size scaling analysis of the spin-glass susceptibility, $χ_{\rm SG}$, and spin-glass correlation length, $ξ_{L}$. For the available system sizes that can be successfully equilibrated, the crossing of $ξ_{L}/L$ versus temperature is strongly affected by corrections to scaling and possibly by a short-length scale ferromagnetic spin blocking. Simi…
We characterize the phase diagram of anisotropic Heisenberg spin glasses, finding both the spin and the chiral glass transition. We remark the presence of strong finite-size effects on the chiral sector. We find a unique phase transition for the chiral and spin glass sector, in the Universality class of Ising spin glasses. We focus on keeping finite-size effects under control, and we stress that they are important to understand experiments. Thanks to large GPU clusters we have been able to thermalize cubic lattices with up to 64x64x64 spins, over a vast range of temperatures.
Spin glass (SG) is a typical magnetic system with frozen random spin orientation at low temperatures. The system exhibits rich physical properties, such as infinite number of ground states, memory effect and aging phenomena. There are two main ingredients considered to be pivotal for the existence of SG behavior, namely, frustration and randomness. For the canonical SG system, frustration is led by the presence of competing interaction between ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AF) couplings. Previously, Bartolozzi {\it et al.} [ Phys. Rev. B{\bf 73}, 224419 (2006)], reported the SG pro…
Motivated by puzzling spin-glass behaviors observed in many pyrochlore-based magnets, effects of magnetoelastic coupling to local lattice distortions were recently studied by the authors for a bond-disordered antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 047204 (2011)]. Here, we extend the analyses with focusing on the critical property of the spin-glass transition which occurs concomitantly with a nematic transition. Finite-size scaling analyses are performed up to a larger system size with 8192 spins to estimate the transition temperature and critical exponents. The exponent…
Brief review is given on recent numerical research of the ordering of two typical models of spin glasses (SGs), the three-dimensional (3D) Ising SG and the 3D Heisenberg SG models. Particular attention is paid to the questions of whether there is a thermodynamic transition in zero field, what are the associated critical properties, what is the nature of the ordered state, particularly of a possible replica-symmetry breaking, and whether there is a thermodynamic transition in applied fields. The properties of the two models are contrasted, and possible relation to experiments is discussed.
The nature of the ordering of the three-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg spin glass with nearest-neighbor random Gaussian coupling is studied by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. Several independent physical quantities are measured both for the spin and for the chirality, including the correlation-length ratio, the Binder ratio, the glass order parameter, the overlap distribution function and the non-self-averageness parameter. By controlling the effect of the correction-to-scaling, we have obtained a numerical evidence for the occurrence of successive chiral-glass and spin-glass transitions …
We numerically study out-of-equilibrium dynamics in a family of Heisenberg models with $1/r^6$ power-law interactions and positional disorder. Using the semi-classical discrete truncated Wigner approximation (dTWA) method, we investigate the time evolution of the magnetization and ensemble-averaged single-spin purity for a strongly disordered system after initializing the system in an out-of-equilibrium state. We find that both quantities display robust glassy behavior for almost any value of the anisotropy parameter of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Furthermore, a systematic analysis allows us t…
The nature of the ordering of the one-dimensional Heisenberg spin-glass model with a long-range power-law interaction is studied by extensive Monte Carlo simulations, with particular attention to the issue of the spin-chirality decoupling/coupling. Large system sizes up to $L=4096$ are studied. With varying the exponent $σ$ describing the power-law interaction, we observe three distinct types of ordering regimes. For smaller $σ$, the spin and the chirality order at a common finite temperature with a common correlation-length exponent, exhibiting the standard spin-chirality coupling behavior. F…
