We introduce a new phase space representation for open quantum systems. This is a very powerful tool to help advance in the study of the morphology of their eigenstates. We apply it to two different versions of a paradigmatic model, the baker map. This allows to show that the long-lived resonances are strongly scarred along the shortest periodic orbits that belong to the classical repeller. Moreover, the shape of the short-lived eigenstates is also analyzed. Finally, we apply an antiunitary symmetry measure to the resonances that permits to quantify their localization on the repeller.
We study families of open chaotic maps that classically share the same asymptotic properties -- forward and backwards trapped sets, repeller dimensions, escape rate -- but differ in their short time behavior. When these maps are quantized we find that the fine details of the distribution of resonances and the corresponding eigenfunctions are sensitive to the initial shape and size of the openings. We study phase space localization of the resonances with respect to the repeller and find strong delocalization effects when the area of the openings is smaller than $\hbar$.
We study the localization of eigenfunctions produced by a point scatterer on a thin rectangle. We find an explicit set of eigenfunctions localized to part of the rectangle by showing that the one-dimensional Schrödinger operator with a Dirac delta potential asymptotically governs the spectral properties of the two-dimensional point scatterer. We also find the rate of localization in terms of the aspect ratio of the rectangle. In addition, we present numerical results regarding the asymptotic behavior of the localization.
We investigate localization of low-energy modes of the Laplacian with a point scatterer on a rectangular plate. We observe that the point scatterer acts as a barrier confining the low-level modes to one side of the plate while assuming the Dirichlet boundary condition at a point does not induce this type of localization. This low-energy phenomenon extends to higher modes as we increase the eccentricity of the plate.
Non-universal correlations due to localization are observed in statistical properties of experimental eigenfunctions of quantum chaotic and disordered microwave cavities. Varying energy {E} and mean free path {l} enable us to experimentally tune from localized to delocalized states. Large level-to-level Inverse Participation Ratio (IPR I_{2}) fluctuations are observed for the disordered billiards, whose distribution is strongly asymmetric about <I_{2}>. The density auto-correlations of eigenfunctions are shown to decay exponentially and the decay lengths are experimentally determined. All the …
The localization properties of eigenfunctions for two interacting particles in the one-dimensional Anderson model are studied for system sizes up to $N=5000$ sites corresponding to a Hilbert space of dimension $\approx 10^7$ using the Green function Arnoldi method. The eigenfunction structure is illustrated in position, momentum and energy representation, the latter corresponding to an expansion in non-interacting product eigenfunctions. Different types of localization lengths are computed for parameter ranges in system size, disorder and interaction strengths inaccessible until now. We confir…
We investigate the issue of eigenfunction localization in random fractal lattices embedded in two dimensional Euclidean space. In the system of our interest, there is no diagonal disorder -- the disorder arises from random connectivity of non-uniformly distributed lattice sites only. By adding or removing links between lattice sites, we change the spectral dimension of a lattice but keep the fractional Hausdorff dimension fixed. From the analysis of energy level statistics obtained via direct diagonalization of finite systems, we observe that eigenfunction localization strongly depends on the …
We study the intermediate statistics of the spectrum of quasi-energies and of the eigenfunctions in the kicked rotator, in the case when the corresponding system is fully chaotic while quantally localized. As for the eigenphases, we find clear evidence that the spectral statistics is well described by the Brody distribution, notably better than by the Izrailev's one, which has been proposed and used broadly to describe such cases. We also studied the eigenfunctions of the Floquet operator and their localization. We show the existence of a scaling law between the repulsion parameter with relati…
A hypothesis about the average phase-space distribution of resonance eigenfunctions in chaotic systems with escape through an opening is proposed. Eigenfunctions with decay rate $γ$ are described by a classical measure that $(i)$ is conditionally invariant with classical decay rate $γ$ and $(ii)$ is uniformly distributed on sets with the same temporal distance to the quantum resolved chaotic saddle. This explains the localization of fast-decaying resonance eigenfunctions classically. It is found to occur in the phase-space region having the largest distance to the chaotic saddle. We discuss th…
We introduce a single-channel opening in a random Hamiltonian and a quantized chaotic map: localization on the opening occurs as a sensible deviation of the wavefunction statistics from the predictions of random matrix theory, even in the semiclassical limit. Increasing the coupling to the open channel in the quantum model, we observe a similar picture to resonance trapping, made of few fast-decaying states, whose left (right) eigenfunctions are entirely localized on the (preimage of the) opening, and plentiful long-lived states, whose probability density is instead suppressed at the opening. …
The properties of the s-wave for a quasi-free particle with position-dependent mass(PDM) have been discussed in details. Differed from the system with constant mass in which the localization of the s-wave for the free quantum particle around the origin only occurs in two dimensions, the quasi-free particle with PDM can experience attractive forces in $D$ dimensions except D=1 when its mass function satisfies some conditions. The effective mass of a particle varying with its position can induce effective interaction which may be attractive in some cases. The analytical expressions of the eigenf…
We study eigenstates of chaotic billiards in the momentum representation and propose the radially integrated momentum distribution as useful measure to detect localization effects. For the momentum distribution, the radially integrated momentum distribution, and the angular integrated momentum distribution explicit formulae in terms of the normal derivative along the billiard boundary are derived. We present a detailed numerical study for the stadium and the cardioid billiard, which shows in several cases that the radially integrated momentum distribution is a good indicator of localized eigen…
We prove Anderson localization for all Diophantine frequencies and all non-resonant phases for a model that arises from 2D quantum walk model subject to an external magnetic field. This is the first localization result for all Diophantine frequencies in the magnetic quantum walk and the quasi-periodic CMV setting. We also obtain sharp asymptotics of the localized eigenfunctions.
We study many-body properties of quantum harmonic oscillator lattices with disorder. A sufficient condition for dynamical localization, expressed as a zero-velocity Lieb-Robinson bound, is formulated in terms of the decay of the eigenfunction correlators for an effective one-particle Hamiltonian. We show how state-of-the-art techniques for proving Anderson localization can be used to prove that these properties hold in a number of standard models. We also derive bounds on the static and dynamic correlation functions at both zero and positive temperature in terms of one-particle eigenfunction c…
As recently discovered [PRL ${\bf 109}$ 190601(2012)], Anderson localization in a bulk disordered system triggers the emergence of a coherent forward scattering (CFS) peak in momentum space, which twins the well-known coherent backscattering (CBS) peak observed in weak localization experiments. Going beyond the perturbative regime, we address here the long-time dynamics of the CFS peak in a 1D random system and we relate this novel interference effect to the statistical properties of the eigenfunctions and eigenspectrum of the corresponding random Hamiltonian. Our numerical results show that t…

We approach uncertainty principles of Cowling-Price-Heis-\\enberg-type as a variational principle on modulation spaces. In our discussion we are naturally led to compact localization operators with symbols in modulation spaces. The optimal constant in these uncertainty principles is the smallest eigenvalue of the inverse of a compact localization operator. The Euler-Lagrange equations for the associated functional provide equations for the eigenfunctions of the smallest eigenvalue of these compact localization operators. As a by-product of our proofs we derive a generalization to mixed-norm sp…
