Multi-wavelength studies of solar analogs (G0-5 V stars) with ages from ~50 Myr to 9 Gyr have been carried out as part of the "Sun in Time" program for nearly 20 yrs. From these studies it is inferred that the young (ZAMS) Sun was rotating more than 10x faster than today. As a consequence, young solar-type stars and the early Sun have vigorous magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) dynamos and correspondingly strong coronal X-ray and transition region / chromospheric FUV-UV emissions. To ensure continuity and homogeneity for this program, we use a restricted sample of G0-5 V stars with masses, radii, T(eff), and internal structure (i.e. outer convective zones) closely matching those of the Sun. From these analogs we have determined reliable rotation-age-activity relations and X-ray - UV (XUV) spectral irradiances for the Sun (or any solar-type star) over time. These XUV irradiance measures serve as input data for investigating the photo-ionization and photo-chemical effects of the young, active Sun on the paleo-planetary atmospheres and environments of solar system planets. These measures are also important to study the effects of these high energy emissions on the numerous exoplanets hosted by solar-type stars of different ages. Recently we have extended the study to include lower mass, main-sequence (dwarf) dK and dM stars to determine relationships among their rotation spin-down rates and coronal and chromospheric emissions as a function of mass and age. From rotation-age-activity relations we can determine reliable ages for main-sequence G, K, M field stars and, subsequently, their hosted planets. Also inferred are the present and the past XUV irradiance and plasma flux exposures that these planets have endured and the suitability of the hosted planets to develop and sustain life.
The present work aims to examine in detail the depletion of lithium in solar twins to better constrain stellar evolution models and investigate its possible connection with exoplanets. We employ spectral synthesis in the region of the asymmetric 6707.75 ÅLi I line for a sample of 77 stars plus the Sun. As in previous works based on a smaller sample of solar twins, we find a strong correlation between Li depletion and stellar age. In addition, for the first time we show that the Sun has the lowest Li abundance in comparison with solar twins at similar age (4.6 $\pm$ 0.5 Gyr). We compare the lit…
The variability of the spectral solar irradiance (SSI) over the course of the 11-year solar cycle is one of the manifestations of solar magnetic activity. There is a strong evidence that the SSI variability has an effect on the Earth's atmosphere. The faster rotation of the Sun in the past lead to a more vigorous action of solar dynamo and thus potentially to larger amplitude of the SSI variability on the timescale of the solar activity cycle. This could led to a stronger response of the Earth's atmosphere as well as other solar system planets' atmospheres to the solar activity cycle. We calcu…
We present a brief review of observational results contributing to modern ideas on the evolution of stellar activity. Basic laws, derived for both rotation-age and activity-rotation relationships, allow us to trace how the activity of low-mass stars changes with age during their stay on the main sequence. We focus on the evaluation of the activity properties of stars that could be analogs of the young Sun. Our study includes joint consideration of different tracers of activity, rotation and magnetic fields of Sun-like stars of various ages. We identify rotation periods, when the saturated regi…
Characterising the long-term evolution of magnetic activity on Sun-like stars is important not only for stellar physics but also for understanding the environment in which planets evolve. In the past decades, many photometric surveys of open clusters have produced extensive rotation period measurements on Sun-like stars of different ages. I use these data to infer the long-term evolution of Ca II chromospheric and X-ray coronal emission on solar mass stars combining a best fit parametric model of their rotation evolution with empirical rotation-activity relationships.
The search for twins of the Sun and Earth relies on accurate characterization of stellar and exoplanetary parameters: i.e., ages, masses, and radii. In the modern era of asteroseismology, parameters of solar-like stars are derived by fitting theoretical models to observational data, which include measurements of their oscillation frequencies, metallicity [Fe/H], and effective temperature Teff. Combining this information with transit data furthermore yields the corresponding parameters for their exoplanets. While [Fe/H] and Teff are commonly stated to a precision of ~0.1 dex and ~100 K, the imp…
We examine how the fraction $f$ of stars for which rotational modulation has been detected in Kepler light curves depends on the stellar mass $M_\star$ and age $t_\star$. Our sample consists of $\approx 850$ FGK stars hosting transiting planet candidates detected from the prime Kepler mission. For these stars, atmospheric parameters have been derived using high-resolution spectra from the California-Kepler survey, and rotational modulation has been searched in Kepler light curves homogeneously. We fit stellar models to the atmospheric parameters, Gaia parallax, and 2MASS magnitude of these sta…
Since the first observations of solar oscillations in 1962, helioseismology has probably been one of the most successful fields of astrophysics. Besides the improvement of observational data, solar seismologists developed sophisticated techniques to infer the internal structure of the Sun. Back in 1990s these comparisons showed a very high agreement between solar models and the Sun. However, the downward revision of the CNO surface abundances in the Sun in 2005, confirmed in 2009, induced a drastic reduction of this agreement leading to the so-called solar modelling problem. More than ten year…
On the Tachocline Zone Location in the Sun, the Luminosity Transport time scale, the Rotational Inertia and their Time Variation in Standard Solar Evolution Models
Recent observations reveal the surprising breakdown of stellar gyrochronology relations at about the Sun's age hinting that middle-aged, solar-like stars transition to a magnetically inactive future. We provide a theoretical basis for these intriguing observations inspired by simulations with a mathematical dynamo model that can explore long-term solar cycle fluctuations. We reproduce the observed bimodal distribution of sunspot numbers, but only for subcritical dynamos. Based on a bifurcation analysis, we argue that ageing of solar-like stars makes the magnetically-weak dynamo regime readily …

[Abbreviated] We present an analysis of the newly identified $μ$ Tau Association (MUTA) of young stars at $\sim$ 150 pc from the Sun that is part of the large Cas-Tau structure, coeval and co-moving with the $α$ Persei cluster. We identify more than 500 candidate members using Gaia DR2 data and the BANYAN $Σ$ tool (Gagné et al. 2018) and we determine an age of $62 \pm 7$ Myr for its population based on an empirical comparison of its color-magnitude diagram sequence with those of other nearby young associations. The MUTA is related to the Theia 160 group of Kounkel & Covey (2019) and correspond…
We study the occurrence of magnetic storms in space age (1957-2021) using Dst and Dxt indices. We find 2526/2743 magnetic storms in the Dxt/Dst index, out of which 45% are weak, 40% moderate, 12% intense and 3% major storms. Occurrence of storms in space age follows the slow decrease of sunspot activity and the related change in solar magnetic structure. We quantify the sunspot - CME storm relation in the five cycles of space age. We explain how the varying solar activity changes the structure of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS), and how this affects the HSS/CIR storms. Space age started w…
We present detailed characterization of the extremely dusty main sequence star TYC 8830 410 1. This system hosts inner planetary system dust (Tdust~300 K) with a fractional infrared luminosity of ~1%. Mid-infrared spectroscopy reveals a strong, mildy-crystalline solid-state emission feature. TYC 8830 410 1 (spectral type G9V) has a 49.5" separation M4-type companion co-moving and co-distant with it, and we estimate a system age of ~600 Myr. TYC 8830 410 1 also experiences "dipper"-like dimming events as detected by ASAS-SN, TESS, and characterized in more detail with the LCOGT. These recurring…
Records of sunspot and aurora activity during 581-959 CE in Chinese official histories in the periods of Suí, Táng, and the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms
The rotation rates and magnetic activity of Sun-like and low-mass (< 1.4 Msun) main-sequence stars are known to decline with time, and there now exist several models for the evolution of rotation and activity. However, the role that chemical composition plays during stellar spin-down has not yet been explored. In this work, we use a structural evolution code to compute the rotational evolution of stars with three different masses (0.7, 1.0, and 1.3Msun and six different metallicities, ranging from [Fe/H]=-1.0 to [Fe/H]=+0.5. We also implement three different wind-braking formulations from the …
Faint young Sun paradox (FYSP) is one of the unsolved problem in solar physics. The present study aims to get a possible solution for the FYSP through sun-like G stars and their exoplanetary systems. Using physical properties of exoplanetary data, an empirical relationship between the rate of mass loss ($\frac{dM}{dt}$) with stellar mass (M$_{\star}$) and age ({\em t}) is obtained. We found mass loss rate varies with stellar mass as $\propto$ $(M_{\star}/M_\odot)^{-3.788}$ and proportional to the age as $\propto$ t$^{-1.25}$, which indicates rate of mass loss is higher during early evolutionar…
We present a detailed analysis of the possible future Sun's rotational evolution scenario based on the 8 Gyr-old solar twin HIP 102152. Using HARPS high-cadence observations (and TESS light curves), we analyzed the modulation of a variety of activity proxies (Ca II, HI Balmer, and Na I lines), finding a strong rotational signal of 35.7 $\pm$ 1.4 days ($\log B_{\rm factor}\sim70$, in the case of Ca II K line). This value matches with the theoretical expectations regarding the smooth rotational evolution of the Sun towards the end of the main-sequence, validating the use of gyrochronology after …
We present early results from the Epoch of Giant Planet Migration program, a precise RV survey of over one hundred intermediate-age ($\sim$20$-$200 Myr) G and K dwarfs with the Habitable-Zone Planet Finder spectrograph (HPF) at McDonald Observatory's Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET). The goals of this program are to determine the timescale and dominant physical mechanism of giant planet migration interior to the water ice line of Sun-like stars. Here, we summarize results from the first 14 months of this program, with a focus on our custom RV pipeline for HPF, a measurement of the intrinsic near-i…
We present the first simulations of the tidal disruption of stars with realistic structures and compositions by massive black holes (BHs). We build stars in the stellar evolution code MESA and simulate their disruption in the 3D adaptive-mesh hydrodynamics code FLASH, using an extended Helmholtz equation of state and tracking 49 elements. We study the disruption of a 1$M_\odot$ star and 3$M_\odot$ star at zero-age main sequence (ZAMS), middle-age, and terminal-age main sequence (TAMS). The maximum BH mass for tidal disruption increases by a factor of $\sim$2 from stellar radius changes due to …
Finding solar siblings, that is, stars that formed in the same cluster as the Sun, will yield information about the conditions at the Sun's birthplace. We search for solar sibling candidates in AMBRE, the very large spectra database of solar vicinity stars. Since the ages and chemical abundances of solar siblings are very similar to those of the Sun, we carried out a chemistry- and age-based search for solar sibling candidates. We used high-resolution spectra to derive precise stellar parameters and chemical abundances of the stars. We used these spectroscopic parameters together with Gaia DR2…
As a star spins-down during the main sequence, its wind properties are affected. In this work, we investigate how the Earth's magnetosphere has responded to the change in the solar wind. Earth's magnetosphere is simulated using 3D magnetohydrodynamic models that incorporate the evolving local properties of the solar wind. The solar wind, on the other hand, is modelled in 1.5D for a range of rotation rates Omega from 50 to 0.8 times the present-day solar rotation (Omega_sun). Our solar wind model uses empirical values for magnetic field strengths, base temperature and density, which are derived…
