We address a long-standing problem in colloid and nanoparticle science: particle shape selection in solution synthesis. Our main finding is that a proper balance of two processes, preferential attachment of transported monomers at the protruding features of the growing cluster and monomer rearrangement at the cluster surface, can yield a well-defined particle shape for a large interval of times, and persisting for sizes much larger than the original seed.
Physical properties of colloidal materials can be modified by addition of nanoparticles. Within a model of like-charged mixtures of particles governed by effective electrostatic interactions, we explore the influence of charged nanoparticles on the structure and thermodynamic phase stability of charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions. Focusing on salt-free mixtures of particles of high size and charge asymmetry, interacting via repulsive Yukawa effective pair potentials, we perform molecular dynamics simulations and compute radial distribution functions and static structure factors. Analysis o…
Being able to predict and tune the colloidal stability of nanoparticles is essential for a wide range of applications, yet our ability to do so is currently poor due to a lack of understanding of how they interact with one another. Here, we show that the agglomeration of apolar particles is dominated by either the core or the ligand shell, depending on the particle size and materials. We do this by using Small-Angle X-ray Scattering and molecular dynamics simulations to characterize the interaction between hexadecanethiol passivated gold nanoparticles in decane solvent. For smaller particles, …
The Seebeck and Soret coefficients of ionically stabilized suspension of maghemite nanoparticles in dimethyl sulfoxide are experimentally studied as a function of nanoparticle volume fraction. In the presence of a temperature gradient, the charged colloidal nanoparticles experience both thermal drift due to their interactions with the solvent molecules and electric forces proportional to the internal thermoelectric field. The resulting thermodiffusion of nanoparticles is observed through Forced Rayleigh scattering, while the thermoelectric field is accessed through voltage measurements in a th…
We induce and investigate the coarsening and melting dynamics of an initially static nanoparticle colloidal monolayer at an ionic liquid-vacuum interface, driven by a focused, scanning electron beam. Coarsening occurs through grain interface migration and larger-scale motions such as grain rotations, often facilitated by sliding dislocations. The progressive decrease in area fraction that drives melting of the monolayer is explained using an electrowetting model whereby particles at the interface are solvated once their accumulating charge recruits sufficient counterions to subsume the particl…
Block copolymer are ideal matrices to control the localisation of colloids. Furthermore, anisotropic nanoparticles such as Janus nanoparticles possess an additional orientational degree of freedom that can play a crucial role in the formation of highly ordered materials made of block copolymers. This work presents a mesoscopic simulation method to assert the co-assembly of Janus nanoparticles in a block copolymer mixture, finding numerous instances of aggregation and formation of ordered configurations which can be related to dispersions of pure Janus colloids. Comparison with chemically homog…
Limited bonding valence, usually accompanied by well-defined directional interactions and selective bonding mechanisms, is nowadays considered among the key ingredients to create complex structures with tailored properties: even though isotropically interacting units already guarantee access to a vast range of functional materials, anisotropic interactions can provide extra instructions to steer the assembly of specific architectures. The anisotropy of effective interactions gives rise to a wealth of self-assembled structures both in the realm of suitably synthesized nano- and micro-sized buil…
Interparticle interactions and bulk properties of colloidal suspensions can be substantially modified by addition of nanoparticles. Extreme asymmetries in size and charge between colloidal particles and nanoparticles present severe computational challenges to molecular-scale modeling of such complex systems. We present a statistical mechanical theory of effective electrostatic interactions that can greatly ease large-scale modeling of charged colloid-nanoparticle mixtures. By applying a sequential coarse-graining procedure, we show that a multicomponent mixture of charged colloids, nanoparticl…
The presence of nanoparticles in a diblock copolymer leads to changes in the morphology and properties of the matrix and can produce highly organized hybrid materials. The resulting material properties depend not only on the polymer composition but also on the size, shape, and surface properties of the colloids. The dynamics of this kind of systems using a hybrid mesoscopic approach has been studied in this work. A continuum description for the polymer is used, while colloids are individually resolved. The method allows for a variable preference of the colloids, which can have different sizes,…
We demonstrate scaffolding of plasmonic nanoparticles by topological defects induced by colloidal microspheres to match their surface boundary conditions with a uniform far-field alignment in a liquid crystal host. Displacing energetically costly liquid crystal regions of reduced order, anisotropic nanoparticles with concave or convex shapes not only stably localize in defects but also self-orient with respect to the microsphere surface. Using laser tweezers, we manipulate the ensuing nanoparticle-microsphere colloidal dimers, probing the strength of elastic binding and demonstrating self-asse…
Bright, saturated structural colors in birds have inspired synthesis of self-assembled, disordered arrays of assembled nanoparticles with varied particle spacings and refractive indices. However, predicting colors of assembled nanoparticles, and thereby guiding their synthesis, remains challenging due to the effects of multiple scattering and strong absorption. Here, we use a computational approach to first reconstruct the nanoparticles' assembled structures from small-angle scattering measurements and then input the reconstructed structures to a finite-difference time-domain method to predict…
Block copolymer melts self-assemble in the bulk into a variety of nanostructures, making them perfect candidates to template the position of nanoparticles. The morphological changes of block copolymers are studied in the presence of a considerable filling fraction of colloids. Furthermore, colloids can be found to assemble into ordered hexagonally close-packed structures in a defined number of layers when softly confined within the phase-separated block copolymer. A high concentration of interface-compatible nanoparticles leads to complex block copolymer morphologies depending on the polymeric…
We present modeling approaches to explain mechanisms of control of uniformity (narrow distribution) of sizes and shapes in synthesis of nanosize crystals and micron-size colloids. We consider those situations when the nanocrystals are formed by burst nucleation. The colloids are then self-assembled by aggregation of nanocrystals. The coupled kinetic processes are both controlled by diffusional transport, yielding well-defined colloid dispersions used in many applications. We address aspects of modeling of particle structure selection, ranging from nucleation to growth by aggregation and to mec…
The assembly and stabilization of a finite number of nanocrystals in contact in water could maximize the optical absorption per unit of material. Some local plasmonic properties exploited in applications, such as photothermia and optical signal amplification, would also be maximized which is important in the perspective of mass producing nanostructures at a lower cost. The main lock is that bringing charged particles in close contact requires the charges to be screened/suppressed, which leads to the rapid formation of micrometric aggregates. In this article, we show that aggregates containing …
Colloidal charge in non-polar media is less well understood than its aqueous counterpart and due to van der Waals forces its study is particularly challenging in highly confined systems, for which on the other hand large long-range electrostatic repulsions are heavily screened in aqueous media. Evidence from videomicroscopy is presented that a model system governed with surfactant-mediated charging is governed by the steric stabilizer's specific chemistry.
Advancing open atmosphere printing technologies to produce features in the nanoscale range has important and broad applications ranging from electronics, to photonics, plasmonics and biology. Recently an electrohydrodynamic printing regime has been demonstrated in a rapid dripping mode (termed NanoDrip), where the ejected colloidal droplets from nozzles of diameters of O(1 μm) can controllably reach sizes an order of magnitude smaller than the nozzle and can generate planar and out-of-plane structures of similar sizes. Despite demonstrated capabilities, our fundamental understanding of importa…
Colloidal structure, energy extensivity and Monte Carlo sampling properties of improved short-range interaction models for surfactant-coated magnetic nanoparticles
Particle shape is a critical parameter that plays an important role in self-assembly, for example, in designing targeted complex structures with desired properties. In the last decades an unprecedented range of monodisperse nanoparticle systems with control over the shape of the particles have become available. In contrast, the choice of micron-sized colloidal building blocks of particles with flat facets, i.e., particles with polygonal shapes, is significantly more limited. This can be attributed to the fact that, contrary to nanoparticles, the larger colloids are significantly harder to synt…
Inverse patchy colloids are nano- to micro-scale particles with a surface divided into differently charged regions. This class of colloids combines directional, selective bonding with a relatively simple particle design: owing to the competitive interplay between the orientation-dependent attraction and repulsion -- induced by the interactions between like/oppositely charged areas -- experimentally accessible surface patterns are complex enough to favor the stabilization of specific structures of interest. Most important, the behavior of heterogeneously charged units can be ideally controlled …
We study mutual alignment and interactions between colloidal particles of dissimilar shapes and dimensions when dispersed in a nematic host fluid. Convex pentagonal and concave starfruit-shaped nanoprisms and microspheres induce dipolar or quadrupolar director structures. The ensuing elastic pair interactions between microspheres and nanoprisms are highly dependent on the nanoparticle shape being omnidirectionally attractive for convex prisms but strongly anisotropic for concave prisms. Elastic deformations due to spherical particles cause well-defined alignment of complex-shaped nanoparticles…
We report numerical investigations of a three-dimensional model of diffusive growth of fine particles, the internal structure of which corresponds to different crystal lattices. A growing cluster (particle) is immersed in, and exchanges monomer building blocks with a surrounding medium of diffusing (off-lattice) monomers. On-surface dynamics of the latter is accounted for by allowing, in addition to detachment, monomer motion to the neighboring vacant crystal sites, according to probabilistic rules mimicking local thermalization. The key new feature of our model is the focus on the growth of a…
Nonlinear second-harmonic magnetic response (M2) was used to characterize an aqueous colloidal solution of dextran-coated magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. Data analysis with the formalism based on Gilbert-Landau-Lifshitz equation for stochastic dynamics of superparamagnetic (SP) particles ensured extensive quantifying of the system via a set of magnetic and magnetodynamic parameters, such as the mean magnetic moment, the damping constant, the longitudinal relaxation time, the magnetic anisotropy field and energy, and others. Combined with transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scat…
By means of molecular dynamics simulations we investigate the formation of single-chain nanoparticles through intramolecular cross-linking of polymer chains, in the presence of their precursors acting as purely steric crowders in concentrated solution. In the case of the linear precursors, the structure of the resulting SCNPs is weakly affected by the density at which the synthesis is performed. Crowding has significant effects if ring precursors are used: higher concentrations lead to the formation of SCNPs with more compact and spherical morphologies. Such SCNPs retain in the swollen state (…

我们提出了一个模型,可以解释实验观察到的DNA-纳米粒子组装体的相行为(R。Jin等人,JACS 125,1643(2003); T. A. Taton等人,Science 289,1757(2000))。溶解的DNA连接体与DNA包覆的纳米颗粒的结合可以通过利用服从分数统计的量子颗粒的类比来描述。根据实验结果,我们预测的纳米胶体的相分离温度增加的DNA覆盖的胶体表面。加入盐后,分层温度随盐浓度的增加而增加。我们的分析提出了一种实验策略,将微观DNA序列映射到DNA纳米颗粒溶液的宏观相行为上。这种方法应该提高检测特定DNA序列中(单个)突变的方法的效率。
The report shows the temperature behavior of the real part of dielectric permittivity in the static (dielectric constant) and lo-frequency (LF) domains in bulk samples of 11CB and BaTiO3-based nanocolloids. The study covers the Isotropic Liquid (I), Nematic (N), Smectoc A (SmA) and Solid CRystal (Cr) phases. For each phase, the dominance of pretransitional fluctuations, significantly moderated by nanoparticles is shown. The authors consider separate focus on dielectric constant(Eps(T)) evolution in the static domain yielding mainly response from permanent dipole moments and their arrangement a…
Insight in the structure of nanoparticle assemblies up to a single particle level is key to understand the collective properties of these assemblies, which critically depend on the individual particle positions and orientations. However, the characterization of large, micron sized assemblies containing small, 10-500 nanometer, sized colloids is highly challenging and cannot easily be done with the conventional light, electron or X-ray microscopy techniques. Here, we demonstrate that focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) tomography in combination with image processing enables …
Many low-density nanoparticles show a radial inner structure. This work proposes a novel approach to contrast variation with SAXS based on the constitution of a solvent density gradient in a glass capillary in order to resolve this internal morphology. Scattering curves of a polymeric core-shell colloid were recorded at different suspending medium contrasts at the four-crystal monochromator beamline of PTB at the synchrotron radiation facility BESSY II. The mean size and size distribution of the particles as well as an insight into the colloid electron density composition were determined using…
Virtually all clinical applications of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) require the formulation of biocompatible, water-based magnetic colloids. For magnetic hyperthermia, the requirements also include a high colloidal stability against precipitation and agglomeration of the constituent MNPs, in order to keep the heating efficiency of the ferrofluid in the long term. The specific power absorption (SPA) of single-domain MNPs depends critically on the average particle size and size distribution width, therefore first-rate reproducibility among different batches regarding these parameters are also n…
Metal nanoparticles have a substantial impact across different fields of science, such as photochemistry, energy conversion, and medicine. Among the commonly used nanoparticles, silver nanoparticles are of special interest due to their antibacterial properties and applications in sensing and catalysis. However, many of the methods used to synthesize silver nanoparticles often do not result in well-defined products, the main obstacles being high polydispersity or a lack of particle size tunability. We describe an automated approach to on-demand synthesis of adjustable particles with mean radii …
The organization of nano-particles inside grafted polymer layers is governed by the interplay of polymer-induced entropic interactions and the action of externally applied fields. Earlier work had shown that strong external forces can drive the formation of colloidal structures in polymer brushes. Here we show that external fields are not essential to obtain such colloidal patterns: we report Monte Carlo and Molecular dynamics simulations that demonstrate that ordered structures can be achieved by compressing a `sandwich' of two grafted polymer layers, or by squeezing a coated nanotube, with n…
Deterministic positioning and assembly of colloidal nanoparticles (NPs) onto substrates is a core requirement and a promising alternative to top down lithography to create functional nanostructures and nanodevices with intriguing optical, electrical, and catalytic features. Capillary-assisted particle assembly (CAPA) has emerged as an attractive technique to this end, as it allows controlled and selective assembly of a wide variety of NPs onto predefined topographical templates using capillary forces. One critical issue with CAPA, however, lies in its final printing step, where high printing y…
A hybrid block copolymer(BCP) nanocomposite computational model is proposed to study nanoparticles(NPs) with a generalised shape including squares, rectangles and rhombus. Simulations are used to study the role of anisotropy in the assembly of colloids within BCPs, ranging from NPs that are compatible with one phase, to neutral NPs. The ordering of square-like NPs into grid configurations within a minority BCP domain was investigated, as well as the alignment of nanorods in a lamellar-forming BCP, comparing the simulation results with experiments of mixtures of nanoplates and PS-\textit{b}-PMM…
Bio-conjugated nanomaterials play a promising role in the development of novel supramolecular structures, molecular machines, and biosensing devices. In this study, lipid-conjugated gold nanoparticles were synthesized and allowed to form a self-assembled monolayer structure. The nanoparticles were prepared by a phase transfer method, which involved the reduction of potassium tetrachloroaurate (III) by sodium citrate in an aqueous solution and the simultaneous transfer of the reduced species to an organic medium containing DMPC (1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine). The gold nanoparticl…
While alloy, core-shell and Janus binary nanoclusters are found in more and more technological applications, their formation mechanisms are still poorly understood, especially during synthesis methods involving physical approaches. In this work, we employ a very simple model of such complex systems using Lennard-Jones interactions and inert gas quenching. After demonstrating the ability of the model to well reproduce the formation of alloy, core-shell or Janus nanoparticles, we studied their temporal evolution from the gas via droplets to nanocrystalline particles. In particular, we showed tha…
