Constant-dimension codes (CDCs) have been investigated for noncoherent error correction in random network coding. The maximum cardinality of CDCs with given minimum distance and how to construct optimal CDCs are both open problems, although CDCs obtained by lifting Gabidulin codes, referred to as KK codes, are nearly optimal. In this paper, we first construct a new class of CDCs based on KK codes, referred to as augmented KK codes, whose cardinalities are greater than previously proposed CDCs. We then propose a low-complexity decoding algorithm for our augmented KK codes using that for KK codes. Our decoding algorithm corrects more errors than a bounded subspace distance decoder by taking advantage of the structure of our augmented KK codes. In the rest of the paper we investigate the covering properties of CDCs. We first derive bounds on the minimum cardinality of a CDC with a given covering radius and then determine the asymptotic behavior of this quantity. Moreover, we show that liftings of rank metric codes have the highest possible covering radius, and hence liftings of rank metric codes are not optimal packing CDCs. Finally, we construct good covering CDCs by permuting liftings of rank metric codes.
The list-decodable code has been an active topic in theoretical computer science. There are general results about the list-decodability to the Johnson radius and the list-decoding capacity theorem. In this paper we show that rates, list-decodable radius and list sizes are closely related to the classical topic of covering codes. We prove new general simple but strong upper bounds for list-decodable codes in general finite metric spaces based on various covering codes. The general covering code upper bounds can be applied to the case that the volumes of the balls depend on the centers, not only …
We classify all linear completely regular codes which have covering radius $ρ= 2$ and whose dual are antipodal. For this, we firstly show several properties of such dual codes, which are two-weight codes.

We study generalized covering radii, a fundamental property of linear codes that characterizes the trade-off between storage, latency, and access in linear data-query protocols such as PIR. We prove lower and upper bounds on the generalized covering radii of Reed-Muller codes, as well as finding their exact value in certain extreme cases. With the application to linear data-query protocols in mind, we also construct a covering algorithm that gets as input a set of points in space, and find a corresponding set of codewords from the Reed-Muller code that are jointly not farther away from the inp…
Motivated by an application to database linear querying, such as private information-retrieval protocols, we suggest a fundamental property of linear codes -- the generalized covering radius. The generalized covering-radius hierarchy of a linear code characterizes the trade-off between storage amount, latency, and access complexity, in such database systems. Several equivalent definitions are provided, showing this as a combinatorial, geometric, and algebraic notion. We derive bounds on the code parameters in relation with the generalized covering radii, study the effect of simple code operati…
The Covering Radius of the Reed--Muller Code $RM(2,7)$ is 40
本文证明了$RM(2,7)$的覆盖半径为40,与$RM(3,7)$中$RM(2,7)$的覆盖半径相同。作为推论,我们还发现了$RM(2,n)$,$n=8,9,10$的新的上界。
Symbol-pair codes were proposed for the application in high density storage systems, where it is not possible to read individual symbols. Yaakobi, Bruck and Siegel proved that the minimum pair-distance of binary linear cyclic codes satisfies $d_2 \geq \lceil 3d_H/2 \rceil$ and introduced $b$-symbol metric codes in 2016. In this paper covering codes in $b$-symbol metrics are considered. Some examples are given to show that the Delsarte bound and the Norse bound for covering codes in the Hamming metric are not true for covering codes in the pair metric. We give the redundancy bound on covering r…
Grassmannian $\mathcal{G}_q(n,k)$ is the set of all $k$-dimensional subspaces of the vector space $\mathbb{F}_q^n.$ Recently, Etzion and Zhang introduced a new notion called covering Grassmannian code which can be used in network coding solutions for generalized combination networks. An $α$-$(n,k,δ)_q^c$ covering Grassmannian code $\mathcal{C}$ is a subset of $\mathcal{G}_q(n,k)$ such that every set of $α$ codewords of $\mathcal{C}$ spans a subspace of dimension at least $δ+k$ in $\mathbb{F}_q^n.$ In this paper, we derive new upper and lower bounds on the size of covering Grassmannian codes. T…
This work shows several direct and recursive constructions of ordered covering arrays using projection, fusion, column augmentation, derivation, concatenation and cartesian product. Upper bounds on covering codes in NRT spaces are also obtained by improving a general upper bound. We explore the connection between ordered covering arrays and covering codes in NRT spaces, which generalize similar results for the Hamming metric. Combining the new upper bounds for covering codes in NRT spaces and ordered covering arrays, we improve upper bounds on covering codes in NRT spaces for larger alphabets.…
In this paper we present a family of $q$-ary nonlinear quasi-perfect codes with covering radius 2. The codes have length $n = q^m$ and size $ M = q^{n - m - 1}$ where $q$ is a prime power, $q \geq 3$, $m$ is an integer, $m \geq 2$. We prove that there are more than $q^{q^{cn}}$ nonequivalent such codes of length $n$, for all sufficiently large $n$ and a constant $c = \frac{1}{q} - \varepsilon$.
The sum-rank metric can be seen as a generalization of both, the rank and the Hamming metric. It is well known that sum-rank metric codes outperform rank metric codes in terms of the required field size to construct maximum distance separable codes (i.e., the codes achieving the Singleton bound in the corresponding metric). In this work, we investigate the covering property of sum-rank metric codes to enrich the theory of sum-rank metric codes. We intend to answer the question: what is the minimum cardinality of a code given a sum-rank covering radius? We show the relations of this quantity be…
In this work, constructions of ordered covering arrays are discussed and applied to obtain new upper bounds on covering codes in Rosenbloom-Tsfasman spaces (RT spaces), improving or extending some previous results.
The goal of the classic football-pool problem is to determine how many lottery tickets are to be bought in order to guarantee at least $n-r$ correct guesses out of a sequence of $n$ games played. We study a generalized (second-order) version of this problem, in which any of these $n$ games consists of two sub-games. The second-order version of the football-pool problem is formulated using the notion of generalized-covering radius, recently proposed as a fundamental property of linear codes. We consider an extension of this property to general (not necessarily linear) codes, and provide an asym…
Let L be a Desarguesian 2-spread in the Grassmann graph $J_q(n,2)$. We prove that the collection of the 4-subspaces, which do not contain subspaces from L is a completely regular code in $J_q(n,4)$. Similarly, we construct a completely regular code in the Johnson graph $J(n,6)$ from the Steiner quadruple system of the extended Hamming code. We obtain several new completely regular codes covering radius 1 in the Grassmann graph $J_2(6,3)$ using binary linear programming.
We present methods for computing the distance from a Boolean polynomial on $m$ variables of degree $m-3$ (i.e., a member of the Reed-Muller code $RM(m-3,m)$) to the space of lower-degree polynomials ($RM(m-4,m)$). The methods give verifiable certificates for both the lower and upper bounds on this distance. By applying these methods to representative lists of polynomials, we show that the covering radius of $RM(4,8)$ in $RM(5,8)$ is 26 and the covering radius of $RM(5,9)$ in $RM(6,9)$ is between 28 and 32 inclusive, and we get improved lower bounds for higher~$m$. We also apply our methods to …
A covering code is a subset $\mathcal{C} \subseteq \{0,1\}^n$ with the property that any $z \in \{0,1\}^n$ is close to some $c \in \mathcal{C}$ in Hamming distance. For every $ε,δ>0$, we show a construction of a family of codes with relative covering radius $δ+ ε$ and rate $1 - \mathrm{H}(δ) $ with block length at most $\exp(O((1/ε) \log (1/ε)))$ for every $ε> 0$. This improves upon a folklore construction which only guaranteed codes of block length $\exp(1/ε^2)$. The main idea behind this proof is to find a distribution on codes with relatively small support such that most of these codes have…
We construct integer error-correcting codes and covering codes for the limited-magnitude error channel with more than one error. The codes are lattices that pack or cover the space with the appropriate error ball. Some of the constructions attain an asymptotic packing/covering density that is constant. The results are obtained via various methods, including the use of codes in the Hamming metric, modular $B_t$-sequences, $2$-fold Sidon sets, and sets avoiding arithmetic progression.
