We have performed a detailed abundance analysis of the content of s-process elements of two dwarf stars with suspected overabundace of those elements. Such stars belong to a special kinematic sample of the solar neighborhood, with peculiar kinematics and different chemical abundances when compared to "normal" disk stars. We aim to define if those stars can be identified as barium stars, based on their s-process elements abundances, and their classification, i.e., if they share their chemical profile with strong or mild barium stars. We also intend to shed light on the possible origins of the different kinds of barium stars. Spectra have been taken by using the FEROS spectrograph at the 1.52m telescope of ESO, La Silla. Abundances have been derived for 18 elements, by matching the synthetic profile with the observed spectrum. We have found that HD 11397 shows a mild enhancement for most of the s-process elements as well as for some r-process elements. This star seems to share its abundance profile with the mild Ba-stars. Although showing some slight chemical anomalies for Y, Sr, Mo, and Pb, HD 14282 depicts a chemical pattern similar to the normal stars with slight s-process enhancements.
With the availability of parallaxes provided by the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution, it is possible to construct the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram (HRD) of barium and related stars with unprecedented accuracy. A direct result from the derived HRD is that subgiant CH stars occupy the same region as barium dwarfs, contrary to what their designations imply. By comparing the position of barium stars in the HRD with STAREVOL evolutionary tracks, it is possible to evaluate their masses, provided the metallicity is known. We used an average metallicity [Fe/H] = -0.25 and derived the mass distribution o…
We study the abundance distributions of a sample of metal-rich barium stars provided by Pereira et al. (2011) to investigate the s- and r-process nucleosynthesis in the metal-rich environment. We compared the theoretical results predicted by a parametric model with the observed abundances of the metal-rich barium stars. We found that six barium stars have a significant r-process characteristic, and we divided the barium stars into two groups: the r-rich barium stars ($C_r>5.0$, [La/Nd]\,$<0$) and normal barium stars. The behavior of the r-rich barium stars seems more like that of the metal-poo…
Barium stars conserve important information on the s-process and the third dredge-up in intermediate mass stars. Their discovery in various environments is therefore of great help to test nucleosynthesis and mixing models. Our aim is to analyse two stars with a very strong barium line detected in a large survey of red giants in the Galactic bulge. Abundance analysis was done comparing synthetic model spectra based on the COMARCS code with our medium resolution spectra. Abundances of Ba, La, Y, and Fe were determined. Beside the two main targets, the analysis was also applied to two comparison …
The formation mechanism of the barium stars is thought to be well understood. Barium-rich material, lost in a stellar wind from a thermally-pulsing asymptotic-giant branch star in a binary system, is accreted by its companion main-sequence star. Now, many millions of years later, the primary is an unseen white dwarf and the secondary has itself evolved into a giant which displays absorption lines of barium in its spectrum and is what we call a barium star. A similar wind-accretion mechanism is also thought to form the low-metallicity CH and carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars. Qualitatively the p…
This paper provides long-period and revised orbits for barium and S stars adding to previously published ones. The sample of barium stars with strong anomalies comprise all such stars present in the Lu et al. catalogue. We find orbital motion for all barium and extrinsic S stars monitored. We obtain the longest period known so far for a spectroscopic binary involving an S star, namely 57 Peg with a period of the order of 100 - 500 yr. We present the mass distribution for the barium stars, which ranges from 1 to 3 Msun, with a tail extending up to 5 Msun in the case of mild barium stars. This h…
We determined the atmospheric parameters and abundance pattern for a sample of metal-rich barium stars. We used high-resolution optical spectroscopy. Atmospheric parameters and abundances were determined using the local thermodynamic equilibrium atmosphere models of Kurucz and the spectral analysis code MOOG. We show that the stars have enhancement factors, [s/Fe], from 0.25 to 1.16. Their abundance pattern of the Na, Al, alpha-elements, and iron group elements as well as their kinematical properties are similar to the characteristics of the other metal-rich and super metal-rich stars already …
In this paper we present an homogeneous analysis of photospheric abundances based on high-resolution spectroscopy of a sample of 182 barium stars and candidates. We determined atmospheric parameters, spectroscopic distances, stellar masses, ages, luminosities and scale height, radial velocities, abundances of the Na, Al, $alpha$-elements, iron-peak elements, and s-process elements Y, Zr, La, Ce, and Nd. We employed the local-thermodynamic-equilibrium model atmospheres of Kurucz and the spectral analysis code {\sc moog}. We found that the metallicities, the temperatures and the surface gravitie…
Barium (Ba) stars form via mass-transfer in binary systems, and can subsequently interact with their white dwarf companion in a second stage of binary interaction. We used observations of main-sequence Ba systems as input for our evolutionary models, and try to reproduce the orbits of the Ba giants. We show that to explain short and sometimes eccentric orbits, additional interaction mechanisms are needed along the RGB.
A new large sample of 895 s-process-rich candidates out of 454180 giant stars surveyed by LAMOST at low spectral resolution (R ~ 1800) has been reported by Norfolk et al. (2019; hereafter N19). We aim at confirming the s-process enrichment at the higher resolution (R ~ 86000) offered by the HERMES-Mercator spectrograph, for the 15 brightest targets of the previous study sample which consists in 13 Sr-only stars and two Ba-only stars. Abundances were derived for elements Li, C, N, O, Na, Mg, Fe, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Ba, La, and Ce. Binarity has been tested by comparing the Gaia DR2 radial velocit…
Barium stars are thought to result from binary evolution in systems wide enough to allow the more massive component to reach the asymptotic giant branch and eventually become a CO white dwarf. While Ba stars were initially known only among giant or subgiant stars, some were subsequently discovered also on the main sequence (and known as dwarf Ba stars). We provide here the orbital parameters of three dwarf Ba stars, completing the sample of 27 orbits published recently by Escorza et al. with these three southern targets. We show that these new orbital parameters are consistent with those of ot…
The cosmic dispersion in the abundances of the heavy elements strontium and barium in halo stars is well known. Strontium and barium are detected in most cool, metal-poor giants, but are these elements always detectable? To identify stars that could be considered probable candidates for lacking these elements, I examine the stellar abundance data available in the literature for 1148 field stars and 226 stars in dwarf galaxies, 776 of which have metallicities lower than [Fe/H]<-2.0. Strontium or barium have been detected in all field, globular cluster, and dwarf galaxy environments studied. All…
Barium stars have been studied extensively over the past few decades, yet our current understanding of how these intriguing objects formed leaves much to be desired. Many trends observed in systems containing barium stars cannot be satisfactorily explained by classical binary evolution models, naturally raising the question of whether triples and other higher-order multiples can give rise to such exotic objects. In this paper, we study the possibility that a Roche Lobe overflow from a tertiary in a hierarchical triple system can potentially lead to surface barium enrichment within the inner bi…
Classical barium stars are binary systems which consist of a late-type giant enriched in carbon and slow neutron capture (s-process) elements and an evolved white dwarf (WD) that is invisible at optical wavelengths. The youngest observed barium stars are surrounded by planetary nebulae (PNe), ejected soon after the wind accretion of polluted material when the WD was in its preceeding asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase. Such systems are rare but powerful laboratories for studying AGB nucleosynthesis as we can measure the chemical abundances of both the polluted star and the nebula ejected by t…
We present the results of determination of the barium abundance considering the non-LTE (NLTE) effects in 172 dwarf stars in the metallicity range of -1< [Fe/H] <+0.3, assigned to different Galactic substructures by kinematic criteria. We used a model of the Ba atom with 31 levels of Ba I and 101 levels of Ba II. The atmosphere models for the investigated stars were computed using the ATLAS9 code modified by new opacity distribution functions. The NLTE profiles of the unblended Ba II (4554 A, 5853 A, 6496 A) were computed and then compared to those observed. The line 6141 A was also used, but …
Barium stars are extrinsic Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. They present the s-enhancement characteristic for AGB and post-AGB stars, but are in an earlier evolutionary stage (main sequence dwarfs, subgiants, red giants). They are believed to form in binary systems, where a more massive companion evolved faster, produced the s-elements during its AGB phase, polluted the present barium star through stellar winds and became a white dwarf. The samples of barium stars of Allen & Barbuy (2006) and of Smiljanic et al. (2007) are analysed here. Spectra of both samples were obtained at high-resolu…
We report the first measurement of the odd-isotope fractions for barium, \fodd\, in two extremely metal-poor stars: a CEMP-r/s star \he\ (\feh\,$=-2.42\pm0.11$) and an r-II star \cs\ (\feh\,$=-2.90\pm0.13$). The measured \fodd\ values are $0.23\pm0.12$ corresponding to $34.3\pm34.3$\% of the r-process contributions for \he\ and $0.43\pm0.09$ corresponding to $91.4\pm25.7$\% of the r-process contribution to Ba production for \cs. The high r-process signature of barium in \cs\ ($91.4\pm25.7\%$) suggests that the majority of the heavy elements in this star were synthesised via an r-process path, …
We have updated the Ba II model atom by taking into account the H I impact excitation with the rate coefficients from the quantum-mechanical calculations of Belyaev and Yakovleva (2018). Using high-resolution stellar spectra and the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) line formation for Ba II, we have determined the fraction of barium isotopes with an odd mass number (fodd}) in four Galactic halo giants with well-known atmospheric parameters. We use a method based on the requirement that the abundances from the Ba II 4554 A resonance and Ba II 5853, 6496 A subordinate lines be equal.…
Barium stars are one of the important probes to understand the origin and evolution of slow neutron-capture process elements in the Galaxy. These are extrinsic stars, where the observed s-process element abundances are believed to have an origin in the now invisible companions that produced these elements at their Asymptotic Giant Branch phase of evolution. We have attempted to understand the s-process nucleosynthesis, as well as the physical properties of the companion stars through a detailed comparison of observed elemental abundances of 10 barium stars with the predictions from AGB nucleos…
We report the discovery of a spiral-like nebula with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and the results of optical spectroscopy of its associated star TYC 8606-2025-1 with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). We find that TYC 8606-2025-1 is a G8 III star of $\approx3$ M$_\odot$, showing a carbon depletion by a factor of two and a nitrogen enhancement by a factor of three. We also derived an excess of s-process elements, most strongly for barium, which is a factor of three overabundant, indicating that TYC 8606-2025-1 is a mild barium star. We thereby add a new member to the…
We present the barium surface abundance of 12 blue stragglers (BSs) and 18 main-sequence (MS) stars in the intermediate-age open cluster NGC 6819 (2.5 Gyr) based on spectra obtained from the Hydra Multi-object Spectrograph on the WIYN 3.5 m telescope. For the MS stars we find [Fe/H] = $+$0.05 $\pm$ 0.04 and [Ba/Fe] = $-$0.01 $\pm$ 0.10. The majority of the BS stars are consistent with these values. We identify five BSs with significant barium enhancement. These stars most likely formed through mass transfer from an asymptotic giant branch star that polluted the surface of the BS with the nucle…
Abell 70 (PN G038.1-25.4, hereafter A 70) is a planetary nebula (PN) known for its diamond ring appearance due a superposition with a background galaxy. The previously unstudied central star is found to be a binary consisting of a G8IV-V secondary at optical wavelengths and a hot white dwarf (WD) at UV wavelengths. The secondary shows Ba II and Sr II features enhanced for its spectral type that, combined with the chromospheric Halpha emission and possible 20-30 km/s radial velocity amplitude, firmly classifies the binary as a Barium star. The proposed origin of Barium stars is intimately linke…
Abell 70 is a planetary nebula (PN) whose nucleus at optical wavelengths is a G8 star with enhanced carbon and s-process abundances--a "barium star." The cool star is a binary companion of the true, hot central star. In several other members of this rare class, the cool star is known to rotate with a period of only a few days. This is attributed to a spin-up that occurred due to accretion from the wind of the central star during its post-AGB PN ejection; this also accounts for the unusual chemical composition of the companion's photosphere. We obtained photometry of the central star of Abell 7…
In order to identify diagnostics distinguishing between pre- and post-mass-transfer systems, the mass-ratio distribution and period - eccentricity (P - e) diagram of barium and S stars are compared to those of the sample of binary red giants in open clusters from Mermilliod et al. (2007). From the analysis of the mass-ratio distribution for the cluster binary giants, we find an excess of systems with companion masses between 0.58 and 0.87 Msun, typical for white dwarfs. They represent 22% of the sample, which are thus candidate post-mass-transfer systems. Among these candidates which occupy th…
[Abridged] Barium stars are moderately rare, chemically peculiar objects, which are believed to be the result of the pollution of an otherwise normal star by material from an evolved companion on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). We aim to derive carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and fluorine abundances for the first time from the infrared spectra of the barium red giant star HD 123396 to quantitatively test AGB nucleosynthesis models for producing barium stars via mass accretion. High-resolution and high S/N infrared spectra were obtained using the Phoenix spectrograph mounted at the Gemini South te…
Barium stars are s-process enriched giants. They owe their chemical peculiarities to a past mass transfer phase. During which they were polluted by their binary companion, which at the time was an AGB star, but is now an extinct white dwarf. Barium stars are thus ideal targets for understanding and constraining the s-process in low and intermediate-mass AGB stars. We derive the abundances of a large number of heavy elements in order to shed light on the conditions of operation of the neutron source responsible for the production of s-elements in the former companions of the barium stars. Adopt…

We examine the composition of barium stars in the context of mass transfer from an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) companion. We accrete between 0.01 and 0.5 M$_\odot$ of AGB ejecta on to low mass companions of [Fe/H] = -0.25 at the ages expected for the end of the lives of AGB stars of 2.5, 3 and 4M$_\odot$. In each case, we form a star of 2.5 M$_\odot$ which is thought to be a typical barium star mass. We discuss the extent of dilution of accreted material as the star evolves, and describe the impact on the surface abundances. For accretion from a 2.5\ms\ primary, if the secondary's initial ma…
Barium stars are chemically peculiar stars that exhibit enhancement of s-process elements. Chemical abundance analysis of barium stars can provide crucial clues for the study of the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. The Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) has released more than 6 million low-resolution spectra of FGK-type stars by Data Release 9 (DR9), which can significantly increase the sample size of barium stars. In this paper, we used machine learning algorithms to search for barium stars from low-resolution spectra of LAMOST. We have applied the Light Gradi…
Detailed chemical composition studies of stars with enhanced abundances of neutron-capture elements can provide observational constraints for neutron-capture nucleosynthesis studies and clues for understanding their contribution to the Galactic chemical enrichment. We present abundance results from high-resolution spectral analyses of a sample of four chemically peculiar stars characterized by s-process enhancement. High-Resolution spectra (R ~ 42000) of these objects spanning a wavelength range from 4000 to 6800 A, are taken from the ELODIE archive. We have estimated the stellar atmospheric p…
In order to get a broader view of the s-process nucleosynthesis we study the abundance distribution of heavy elements of 35 barium stars and 24 CEMP-stars, including nine CEMP-s stars and 15 CEMP-r/s stars. The similar distribution of [Pb/hs] between CEMP-s and CEMP-r/s stars indicate that the s-process material of both CEMP-s and CEMP-r/s stars should have a uniform origin, i.e. mass transfer from their predominant AGB companions. For the CEMP-r/s stars, we found that the r-process should provide similar proportional contributes to the second s-peak and the third s-peak elements, and also be …
The origin and evolution of neutron-capture elements in our Galaxy is poorly understood. In this work, we have attempted to understand the Galactic s-process nucleosynthesis using barium stars as probes. We have performed high resolution spectroscopic analysis for three barium stars HD 36650, HD 207585 and HD 219116. The analysis of HD 219116 is based on HCT/HESP data at a resolution of 60,000 covering a wavelength region 3530-9970 {\rm Å}. For HD 36650, we have used the FEROS spectrum at a resolution of 48,000 covering the wavelength region 3520-9200 {\rm Å}. For HD 207585, the spectrum from …

We determined the \fodd\ values, $0.46\pm0.08$, $0.51\pm0.09$, $0.50\pm0.13$, $0.48\pm0.12$, which correspond to the r-contribution 100\% for four r-II stars, \cs, \hen, \hes\, and \het, respectively. Our results suggest that almost all of the heavy elements (in the range from Ba to Pb) in r-II stars have a common origin, that is, from a single r-process (the main r-process). We found that the \fodd\ has a intrinsic nature, and should keep constant value of about 0.46 in the main r-process yields, which is responsible for the heavy element enhancement of r-II stars and of our Galaxy chemical e…
We present barium, carbon, and silicon isotopic compositions of 38 acid-cleaned presolar SiC grains from Murchison. Comparison with previous data shows that acid washing is highly effective in removing barium contamination. Strong depletions in $δ$($^{138}$Ba/$^{136}$Ba) values are found, down to $-$400 permil, which can only be modeled with a flatter $^{13}$C profile within the $^{13}$C pocket than is normally used. The dependence of $δ$($^{138}$Ba/$^{136}$Ba) predictions on the distribution of $^{13}$C within the pocket in AGB models allows us to probe the $^{13}$C profile within the $^{13}$…
Barium stars are peculiar red giants characterized by an overabundance of s-process elements along with an enrichment in carbon. These stars are discovered in binaries with white dwarf companions. The more recently formed of these stars are still surrounded by a planetary nebula. Precise abundance determinations of the various s-process elements, especially, of the lightest, short-lived radionuclide technetium will establish constraints for the formation of s-process elements in asymptotic giant branch stars as well as mass transfer through, for example, stellar wind, Roche-lobe overflow, and …
New elemental abundances for the neutron-capture elements Sr, Nb, Mo, Ru, La, Sm, and Eu are presented for a large sample of 180 barium (Ba) giant stars, a class of chemically peculiar objects that exhibit in their spectra enhancements of the elements created by the $s$-process, as a consequence of mass transfer between the components of a binary system. The content of heavy elements in these stars, in fact, points to nucleosynthesis mechanisms that took place within a former asymptotic giant branch (AGB) companion, now an invisible white dwarf. From high-resolution ($R=48000$) spectra in the …
We present abundances of Mn, Cu, Zn and various light and heavy elements for a sample of barium and normal giant stars, and present correlations between abundances contributed to different degrees by the weak-s, main-s, and r-processes of neutron capture, between Fe-peak elements and heavy elements. Data from the literature are also considered in order to better study the abundance pattern of peculiar stars. The stellar spectra were observed with FEROS/ESO, and the stellar atmospheric parameters of the 8 barium giant stars and 6 normal giants analyzed by us lie in the range 4300 < T_eff/K < 53…
Masses are one of the most difficult stellar properties to measure. In the case of the white-dwarf companions of Barium stars, the situation is worse. These stars are dim, cool, and difficult to observe via direct methods. However, Ba stars were polluted by the Asymptotic Giant Branch progenitors of these WDs with matter rich in heavy elements, and the properties of their WD companions contain key information about binary interaction processes involving AGB stars and about the slow-neutron-capture(s)-process of nucleosynthesis. We aim to determine accurate and assumption-free masses for the WD…
Heavy-elements, i.e. those beyond the iron peak, mostly form via two neutron capture processes: the s- and r-process. Metal-poor stars should contain fewer isotopes that form via the s-process, according to currently accepted theory. It has been shown in several investigations that theory and observation do not agree well, raising questions on the validity of either the methodology or the theory. We analyse the metal-poor star HD140283, for which we have a high quality spectrum. We test whether a 3D LTE stellar atmosphere and spectrum synthesis code permits a more reliable analysis of the iron…
Barium (Ba), CH, and extrinsic or Tc-poor S-type stars are evolved low- and intermediate-mass stars that show enhancement of slow-neutron-capture-process elements on their surface, an indication of mass accretion from a former asymptotic giant branch (AGB) companion, which is now a white dwarf (WD). Ba and CH stars can be found in the main-sequence (MS), the sub-giant, and the giant phase, while extrinsic S-type stars populate the giant branches only. As these polluted stars evolve, they might be involved in a second phase of interaction with their now white dwarf companion. In this paper, we …
Barium (Ba) stars are polluted by material enriched in the slow neutron capture (s-process) elements synthesised in the interior of their former asymptotic giant branch (AGB) companion star, which is now a white dwarf. We compare individual Ba star abundance patterns to AGB nucleosynthesis models to verify if the AGB model mass is compatible with independently derived AGB mass. We selected a sample of 28 Ba stars for which both self-consistent spectroscopic observation and analysis are available and stellar mass determinations, via positioning the star on the HR diagram and comparing with evol…
We aim at deriving accurate atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances of 19 barium (Ba) stars, including both strong and mild Ba stars, based on the high signal-to-noise ratio and high resolution Echelle spectra obtained from the 2.16 m telescope at Xinglong station of National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The chemical abundances of the sample stars were obtained from an LTE, plane-parallel and line-blanketed atmospheric model by inputting the atmospheric parameters (effective temperatures, surface gravities, metallicity and microturbulent velocity) and equival…
Context. Theoretical results showed the possibility that neutron capture elements were produced in the early Universe by two different sources: a frequent s-process source hosted by rotating massive stars, and a rare r-process source hosted most likely by neutron star mergers. The two sources produce barium with different isotopic compositions. Aims. We aim to investigate the lines of barium in two halo stars, HD 6268 and HD 4306. The spectra present an exquisite quality, both in terms of resolution (R > 100'000) and signal-to-noise (400). Due to hyperfine splitting (hfs) effects, barium lines…
LoTr 1 is a planetary nebula thought to contain an intermediate-period binary central star system (that is, a system with an orbital period, P, between 100 and, say, 1500 days). The system shows the signature of a K-type, rapidly rotating giant, and most likely constitutes an accretion-induced post-mass transfer system similar to other PNe such as LoTr 5, WeBo 1 and A70. Such systems represent rare opportunities to further the investigation into the formation of barium stars and intermediate period post-AGB systems -- a formation process still far from being understood. Here, we present the fi…
We present a grid of computed non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) equivalent widths (EW) and NLTE abundance corrections for four Ba II lines: 4554, 5853, 6141, and 6496 A. The grid can be useful in deriving the NLTE barium abundance in stars having parameters in the following ranges: effective temperature from 4000 K to 6500 K, surface gravity log g from 0 to 5, microturbulent velocity 0 km s^-1 to 3 km s^-1, metallicity [Fe/H] from -2 to +0.5, and [Ba/Fe] from -0.4 to +0.6. The NLTE abundance can be either derived by EW interpolation (using the observed Ba II line EW) or by using the N…
We present elemental abundance results from high resolution spectral analysis of three nitrogen-enhanced barium stars. The analysis is based on spectra obtained with the FEROS attached to 1.52m telescope at ESO, Chile. The spectral resolution is R~48000 and the spectral coverage spans from 3500-9000Å\,. For the objects HD 51959 and HD 88035, we present the first time abundance analyses results. Although a few studies are available in literature on the object HD 121447, the results are significantly different from each other. We have therefore carried out a detailed chemical composition study f…
Context. Barium (Ba) stars are dwarf and giant stars enriched in elements heavier than iron produced by the slow neutron-capture process (s process). They belong to binary systems where the primary star evolved through the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase, during which it produced the s-process elements and transferred them onto the secondary, now observed as a Ba star. Aims. We compare the largest homogeneous set of Ba giant star observations of the s-process elements Y, Zr, La, Ce, and Nd with AGB nucleosynthesis models to reach a better understanding of the s process in AGB stars. Methods…
We report three new barium (Ba) dwarfs lying in Sirius-like systems, which provides direct evidence that Ba dwarfs are companions to white dwarfs (WDs). Atmospheric parameters, stellar masses, and chemical abundances of 25 elements, including light, $α$, Fe-peak and s-process elements, are derived from high resolution and high S/N spectra. Enhancement of s-process elements with [s/Fe] ratios between 0.4 and 0.6 confirm them as mild barium stars. The estimated metallicities ($-$0.31, $-$0.06, 0.13) of BD+68$^\circ$1027, RE~J0702+129 and BD+80$^\circ$670 are in the range of known Ba dwarfs and g…

Barium (Ba) dwarfs and CH subgiants are the less-evolved analogues of Ba and CH giants. They are F- to G-type main-sequence stars polluted with heavy elements by a binary companion when the latter was on the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB). This companion is now a white dwarf that in most cases cannot be directly detected. We present a large systematic study of 60 objects classified as Ba dwarfs or CH subgiants. Combining radial-velocity measurements from HERMES and SALT high-resolution spectra with radial-velocity data from CORAVEL and CORALIE, we determine the orbital parameters of 27 systems.…
We derived the barium atmospheric abundances for a large sample of Cepheids, comprising 270 stars. The sample covers a large range of galactocentric distances, from about 4 to 15 kpc, so that it is appropriated to investigate the existence of radial barium abundance gradients in the galactic disc. In fact, this is the first time that such a comprehensive analysis of the distribution of barium abundances in the galactic disc is carried out. As a result, we conclude that the Ba abundance distribution can be characterized by a zero gradient. This result is compared with derived gradients for othe…
(Abridged) Aims: We study the effects related to departures from non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) and homogeneity in the atmospheres of red giant stars in Galactic globular cluster NGC 6752, to assess their influence on the formation of Ba II lines. Methods: One-dimensional (1D) local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and 1D NLTE barium abundances were derived using classical 1D ATLAS stellar model atmospheres. The three-dimensional (3D) LTE abundances were obtained for 8 red giants on the lower RGB, by adjusting their 1D LTE abundances using 3D-1D abundance corrections, i.e., the diff…
We present a detailed study of the barium star at the heart of the planetary nebula Abell 70. Time-series photometry obtained over a period of more than ten years demonstrates that the barium-contaminated companion is a rapid rotator with temporal variability due to spots. The amplitude and phasing of the photometric variability changes abruptly, however there is no evidence for a change in the rotation period (P = 2.06~d) over the course of the observations. The co-addition of 17 high-resolution spectra obtained with VLT-UVES allow us to measure the physical and chemical properties of the com…
