We study fully occupied lattice systems of classical magnetic dipoles which point along random axes. Only dipolar interactions are considered. From tempered Monte Carlo simulations, we obtain numerical evidence that supports the following conclusions: in three dimensions, (a) there is an equilibrium spin glass phase at temperatures below $T_c$, where $k_BT_c= (0.86\pm 0.07)\varepsilon_d $ and $\varepsilon_d$ is a nearest neighbor dipole-dipole interaction energy, (b) in the spin glass phase the overlap parameter is approximately given by $\sqrt{1-T/T_c}$, and (c) the correlation length $ξ$ diverges at $T_c$ with a critical exponent $ν=1.5\pm0.5$; in two dimensions $ξ$ diverges at or near T=0 and $ν=3\pm1$.
In the present study, we demonstrate the measurement of resistivity tensor ($ρ$) along the magnetic axes of a polycrystalline film of ferromagnetic permalloy (Py). To this end, conventional Hall-bar and a more recent extended van der Pauw methods were utilized for determining 2D $ρ$ in the film plane. The samples were prepared by normal incidence sputter deposition within an in-situ magnetic field to induce in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in the film. Since $ρ$ might be affected by the internal magnetization of the film, we performed measurements by rotation of a saturating magnetic fiel…
The magnetic response of nanostructures plays an important role on biomedical applications being strongly influenced by the magnetic anisotropy. In this work we investigate the role of temperature, particle concentration and nanoparticle arrangement forming aggregates in the effective magnetic anisotropy of Mn-Zn ferrite-based nanoparticles. Electron magnetic resonance and coercivity temperature dependence analyses, were critically compared for the estimation of the anisotropy. We found that the temperature dependence of the anisotropy follows the Callen-Callen model, while the symmetry depend…
Experimentally resolving atomic-scale structural changes of a deformed glass remains challenging owing to the disordered nature of glass structure. Here, we show that the structural anisotropy emerges as a general hallmark for different types of glasses (metallic glasses, oxide glass, amorphous selenium, and polymer glass) after thermo-mechanical deformation, and it is highly correlates with local nonaffine atomic displacements detected by the high-energy X-ray diffraction technique. By analyzing the anisotropic pair density function, we unveil the atomic-level mechanism responsible for the pl…
We report measurements of magnon spin transport in a spinel ferrite, magnesium aluminum ferrite $\mathrm{MgAl_{0.5}Fe_{1.5}O_4}$ (MAFO), which has a substantial in-plane four-fold magnetic anisotropy. We observe spin diffusion lengths $> 0.8$ $\mathrm{μm}$ at room temperature in 6 nm films, with spin diffusion length 30% longer along the easy axes compared to the hard axes. The sign of this difference is opposite to the effects just of anisotropy in the magnetic energy for a uniform magnetic state. We suggest instead that accounting for anisotropy in exchange stiffness is necessary to explain …
Reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), vibrating sample magnetometry and other physical property measurements are used to investigate the structure, morphology, magnetic and magneto-transport properties of (001)-oriented Cr$_2$Te$_3$ thin films grown on Al$_2$O$_3$(0001) and Si(111)-(7$\times$7) surfaces by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Streaky RHEED patterns indicate flat smooth film growth on both substrates. STM studies show the hexagonal arrangements of surface atoms. Determination of the lattice parameter from atomically resolved STM imag…
We study the properties of domain walls and domain patterns in ultrathin epitaxial magnetic films with two orthogonal in-plane easy axes, which we call fourfold materials. In these materials, the magnetization vector is constrained to lie entirely in the film plane and has four preferred directions dictated by the easy axes. We prove the existence of $90^\circ$ and $180^\circ$ domain walls in these materials as minimizers of a nonlocal one-dimensional energy functional. Further, we investigate numerically the role of the considered domain wall solutions for pattern formation in a rectangular s…
This paper presents computer simulations of Cu$_x$Zr$_{100-x}$ $(x=36,50,64)$ in the liquid and glass phases. The simulations are based on the effective-medium theory (EMT) potentials. We find good invariance of both structure and dynamics in reduced units along the isomorphs of the systems. The state points studied involve a density variation of almost a factor of two and temperatures going from 1500 K to above 4000 K for the liquids and from 500 K to above 1500 K for the glasses. For comparison, results are presented also for similar temperature variations along isochores, showing little inv…
Spinel Cobalt Vanadate CoV$_2$O$_4$ has been grown on (001) SrTiO$_3$ substrates. Using torque magnetometry experiments, we find that the previously observed temperature induced anisotropy change, where the easy axis changes from the out of plane [001] direction to a biaxial anisotropy with planar <100> easy axes, occurs in a gradual second-order structural phase transition. This work characterizes this transition and the magnetic anisotropies in the (001), (100), and (-110) rotation planes, and explores their field dependence up to 30~T. Below 80~K, hysteretic features appear around the hard …
The magnetic phase diagram at zero external field of an ensemble of dipoles with uniaxial anisotropy on a FCC lattice has been investigated from tempered Monte Carlo simulations. The uniaxial anisotropy is characterized by a random distribution of easy axes and its magnitude $λ_u$ is the driving force of disorder and consequently frustration. The phase diagram, separating the paramagnetic, ferromagnetic and spin-glass regions, was thus considered in the temperature, $λ_u$ plane. Here we interpret this phase diagram in terms of the more convenient variables namely the bare dipolar interaction a…
Motivated by recent experimental results on GdRu$_2$Si$_2$ [Khanh, N.D., Nakajima, T., Yu, X. et al., \emph{Nat. Nanotechnol.} \textbf{15}, 444-449 (2020)], where nanometric square skyrmion lattice was observed, we propose simple analytical mean-field description of the high-temperature part of the phase diagram of centrosymmetric tetragonal frustrated antiferromagnets with dipolar interaction in the external magnetic field. In the reciprocal space dipolar forces provide momentum dependent biaxial anisotropy. It is shown that in tetragonal lattice in the large part of the Brillouin zone for mu…
For disordered Heisenberg systems with small single ion anisotropy, two spin glass transitions below the long range ordered phase transition temperature has been predicted theoretically for compositions close to the percolation threshold. Experimental verification of these predictions is still controversial for conventional spin glasses. We show that multiferroic spin glass systems can provide a unique platform for verifying these theoretical predictions via a study of change in magnetoelastic and magnetoelectric couplings, obtained from an analysis of diffraction data, at the spin glass trans…
Half topological states of matter and two-dimensional (2D) magnetism have gained much attention recently. In this paper, we propose a special topological semimetal phase called a 2D half Chern-Weyl semimetal (HCWS), which is a 2D magnetic Weyl semimetal bound to the half Chern insulator phase by symmetry, and the two phases can be converted to each other by manipulating the magnetization direction. We provide the symmetry conditions to realize this state in 2D systems with multiple screw axes. Tight-binding models with multiple basis and a predicted 2D material, monolayer TiTe, are shown as th…
