We consider spatially two dimensional Madelung fluid whose irrotational motion reduces into the Schrödinger equation for a single free particle. In this respect, we regard the former as a direct generalization of the latter, allowing a rotational quantum flow. We then ask for the most likely wave function possessing a given average energy by maximizing the Shannon information entropy over the quantum probability density. We show that there exists a class of solutions in which the wave function is self-trapped, rotationally symmetric, spatially localized with finite support, and spinning around its center, yet stationary. The stationarity comes from the balance between the attractive quantum force field of a trapping quantum potential generated by quantum probability density and the repulsive centrifugal force of a rotating velocity vector field. We further show that there is a limiting case where the wave function is non-spinning and yet still stationary. This special state turns out to be the lowest stationary state of the ordinary Schrödinger equation for a particle in a cylindrical tube classical potential.
We discuss two-dimensional Madelung fluid dynamics whose irrotational case reduces into the Schrödinger equation for a free single particle. We show that the self-trapped spinning-stationary Madelung fluid reported in the previous paper can be analogically identified as an equilibrium thermodynamics system. This is done by making correspondence between Shannon entropy over Madelung density and internal energy to be defined in the main text, respectively with thermal-entropy and thermal-internal energy of equilibrium thermodynamics system. This leads us to identify a Madelung fluid analog of th…
Using the Madelung fluid picture of Schrödinger equation for a single free particle moving in one spatial dimension, we shall specify a class of wave functions whose quantum probability density is being trapped by the quantum potential it itself generates. The global convexity of the quantum potential generated by the initial self-trapped wave function will then be shown to further localize the quantum probability density through a self-generated focusing equation for a finite interval of time.
Starting from the Pauli current we obtain the decomposition of the non-relativistic local velocity in two parts: one parallel and the other orthogonal to the momentum. The former is recognized to be the ``classical'' part, that is the velocity of the center-of-mass, and the latter the ``quantum'' one, that is the velocity of the motion in the center-of-mass frame (namely, the internal ``spin motion'' or {\em Zitterbewegung}). Inserting the complete expression of the velocity into the kinetic energy term of the classical non-relativistic (i.e., Newtonian) Lagrangian, we straightforwardly derive…
We apply a recursive approach to the continuity equation of the Madelung fluid resulting in a propagation equation for particle probability densities. This propagation equation can be used to propagate particle distributions in the presence of a Madelung pressure field. We show that the derived propagation equation goes over into the guidance equation of the de Broglie-Bohm theory in the limit of well located single particles. As an example, we propagate particles that enter the lower slit of a double-slit experiment, while the Madelung fluid enters both slits.
The Madelung equations map the non-relativistic time-dependent Schrodinger equation into hydrodynamic equations of a virtual fluid. Here we show that an increase of the Boltzmann entropy of this Madelung fluid is proportional to the expectation value of its velocity divergence. Hence, entropy growth is accompanied by expansion resulting from the ability of the Madelung fluid to be compressible. The compressibility itself reflects superposition of solutions of the Schrodinger equation. Thus, in unitary processes where the Madelung fluid expands and then shrinks, the Boltzmann entropy may, corre…
In the paper with the above-noted title, T. C. Wallstrom claims that the description of the particle's motion as a certain "conservative" diffusion is not equivalent to quantum mechanics in spite of the fact that the Madelung "hydrodynamic" equations, which provide the description of such a diffusion, can be converted to the Schroedinger equation. He pointed out that such a stochastic theory can be regarded as equivalent to conventional quantum mechanics only if they can derive from it not just the Madelung equations but also the condition that the circulation of the "probability fluid" is alw…
We construct a Madelung fluid model with specific time variable parameters as dissipative quantum fluid and linearize it in terms of Schrodinger equation with time dependent parameters. It allows us to find exact solutions of the nonlinear Madelung system in terms of solutions of the Schrodinger equation and the corresponding classical linear ODE with variable frequency and damping. For the complex velocity field the Madelung system takes the form of a nonlinear complex Schrodinger-Burgers equation, for which we obtain exact solutions using complex Cole-Hopf transformation. In particular, we d…
We revisit the analogy suggested by Madelung between a non-relativistic time-dependent quantum particle, to a fluid system which is pseudo-barotropic, irrotational and inviscid. We first discuss the hydrodynamical properties of the Madelung description in general, and extract a pressure like term from the Bohm potential. We show that the existence of a pressure gradient force in the fluid description does not violate Ehrenfest's theorem since its expectation value is zero. We also point out that incompressibility of the fluid implies conservation of density along a fluid parcel trajectory and …
Ordinarily, the stress tensor that one derives for a Madelung fluid is not regarded as being coupled to a strain tensor, which is consistent with the fluid hypothesis. However, based upon earlier work regarding the geometric nature of the quantum potential, one can, in fact, define a strain tensor, which is not, however, due to a deformation of a spatial region, but to a deformation of a frame field on that region. When one expresses the Madelung stress tensor as a function of the strain tensor and its derivatives, one then defines a constitutive law for the Madelung medium that might lead to …
A new method is reported by which it is possible to induce certain flux configurations of desired characteristics via electromagnetic means into the overall quantum probability current of a many-body system in the Madelung hydrodynamic picture. Some indicative applications are also considered with emphasis in HTC and gravitational wave research.
A set of quantum hydrodynamic equations are derived from the moments of the electrostatic mean-field Wigner kinetic equation. No assumptions are made on the particular local equilibrium or on the statistical ensemble wave functions. Quantum diffraction effects appear explicitly only in the transport equation for the heat flux triad, which is the third-order moment of the Wigner pseudo-distribution. The general linear dispersion relation is derived, from which a quantum modified Bohm-Gross relation is recovered in the long wave-length limit. Nonlinear, traveling wave solutions are numerically f…
Here we extend the Madelung transformation of the Schrödinger equation into a fluid-like form to include the influence of an external electromagnetic field on a charged particle. The vorticity of the Madelung fluid is then in the opposite direction to the imposed magnetic field and equal in magnitude to the cyclotron angular frequency. When the particle motion is confined to a plane, perpendicular to an imposed magnetic field, the equivalent flow dynamics is that of zero absolute vorticity obtained in a quasi 2D rotating frame, where the cyclotron frequency plays a role equivalent to that of t…
Here we present a transformation that maps the Schrodinger equation of quantum mechanics to the incompressible Euler equations of fluid mechanics. The transformation provides a wave solution and a potential function based on fluid properties that satisfy the Schrodinger equation given that the fluid velocity potential and pressure satisfy the Euler equations. Interestingly, in our transformation, the equivalent of quantum potential becomes the physical surface tension. This is contrary to the Madelung transformation that maps the Schrodinger equation to the compressible Euler equations where t…
Starting from relativistic mass-less Madelung fluid, we shall develop a class of typical wave functions by imposing it to maximize Shannon entropy given its finite average quantum potential. We show that there is a class of solutions in which the wave function is spatiotemporally localized with finite spacetime support, uniformly moving hence stationary. It turns out that the quantum amplitude satisfies Klein-Gordon equation with emergent mass term proportional to the square root of average quantum potential. We show that there is physical time uncertainty which decreases as the mass increases…

A minimum uncertainty state for position and momentum of a fluid element is obtained. We consider a general fluid described by the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg (NSK) equation, which reproduces the behaviors of a standard viscous fluid, a fluid with the capillary action and a quantum fluid, with the proper choice of parameters. When the parameters of the NSK equation is adjusted to reproduce Madelung's hydrodynamic representation of the Schreodinger equation, the uncertainty relation of a fluid element reproduces the Kennard and the Robertson-Schreodinger inequalities in quantum mechanics. The derive…
We consider a Finslerian type geometrization of the non-relativistic quantum mechanics in its hydrodynamical (Madelung) formulation, by also taking into account the effects of the presence of the electromagnetic fields on the particle motion. In the Madelung representation the Schrödinger equation can be reformulated as the classical continuity and Euler equations of classical fluid mechanics in the presence of a quantum potential, representing the quantum hydrodynamical evolution equations. The equation of particle motion can then be obtained from a Lagrangian similar to its classical counter…
An interpretation of non-relativistic quantum mechanics is presented in the spirit of Erwin Madelung's hydrodynamic formulation of QM and Louis de Broglie's and David Bohm's pilot wave models. The aims of the approach are as follows: 1) to have a clear ontology for QM, 2) to describe QM in a causal way, 3) to get rid of the wave-particle dualism in pilot wave theories, 4) to provide a theoretical framework for describing creation and annihilation of particles, and 5) to provide a possible connection between particle QM and virtual particles in QFT. These goals are achieved, if the wave functio…
Field theories for the one-body density of an active fluid, such as the paradigmatic active model B+, are simple yet very powerful tools for describing phenomena such as motility-induced phase separation. No comparable theory has been derived yet for the underdamped case. In this work, we introduce active model I+, an extension of active model B+ to particles with inertia. The governing equations of active model I+ are systematically derived from the microscopic Langevin equations. We show that, for underdamped active particles, thermodynamic and mechanical definitions of the velocity field no…
In the first part (Sections 1 and 2) of this paper --starting from the Pauli current, in the ordinary tensorial language-- we obtain the decomposition of the non-relativistic field velocity into two orthogonal parts: (i) the "classical part, that is, the 3-velocity w = p/m OF the center-of-mass (CM), and (ii) the so-called "quantum" part, that is, the 3-velocity V of the motion IN the CM frame (namely, the internal "spin motion" or zitterbewegung). By inserting such a complete, composite expression of the velocity into the kinetic energy term of the non-relativistic classical (i.e., newtonian)…
Following our result that for the final state of continued spherical gravitational collapse, the gravitational mass of the fluid, $M_f\to 0$, we show that for a physical fluid the eventual value of $2GM_f/R_f\to 1$ rather than $2GM_f/R_f <1$, indicating approach to a zero-mass black hole. We also indicate that as the final state would be approached, the curvature components tend to blow up, and the proper radial distance $l$ and the proper time $τ\to \infty$. This indicates that actually the singularity is never attained for the collapse of an isolated body. We also identify that, the final st…
