An integral domain $D$ is a $v$--domain if, for every finitely generated nonzero (fractional) ideal $F$ of $D$, we have $(FF^{-1})^{-1}=D$. The $v$--domains generalize Prüfer and Krull domains and have appeared in the literature with different names. This paper is the result of an effort to put together information on this useful class of integral domains. In this survey, we present old, recent and new characterizations of $v$--domains along with some historical remarks. We also discuss the relationship of $v$--domains with their various specializations and generalizations, giving suitable examples.
The primary purpose of this paper is give a classification scheme for the nonzero primes of a Prüfer domain based on five properties. A prime $P$ of a Prüfer domain $R$ could be sharp or not sharp, antesharp or not, divisorial or not, branched or unbranched, idempotent or not. Based on these five basic properties, there are six types of maximal ideals and twelve types of nonmaximal (nonzero) primes. Both characterizations and examples are given for each type that exists.
Let B be a commutative $\mathbb{Z}$-graded domain of characteristic zero. An element f of B is said to be cylindrical if it is nonzero, homogeneous of nonzero degree, and such that $B_{(f)}$ is a polynomial ring in one variable over a subring. We study the relation between the existence of a cylindrical element of B and the existence of a nonzero locally nilpotent derivation of B. Also, given d > 0, we give sufficient conditions that guarantee that every derivation of $B^{(d)} = \oplus_i B_{di}$ can be extended to a derivation of B. We generalize some results of Kishimoto, Prokhorov and Zaiden…
For an integral domain D and a star operation * on D, we study the following condition: whenever I>AB with I, A, B nonzero ideals, there exist nonzero ideals H and J such that I*=(HJ)*, H*>A and J*>B.
Let $D$ be an integral domain with quotient field $K,$ throughout$.$ Call two elements $x,y\in D\backslash \{0\}$ $v$-coprime if $xD\cap yD=xyD.$ Call a nonzero non unit $r$ of an integral domain $D$ rigid if for all $x,y|r$ we have $x|y$ or $y|x.$ Also call $D$ semirigid if every nonzero non unit of $D$ is expressible as a finite product of rigid elements. We show that a semirigid domain $D$ is a GCD domain if and only if $D$ satisfies $\ast :$ product of every pair of non-$v$-coprime rigid elements is again rigid. Next call $a\in D$ a valuation element if $aV\cap D=aD$ for some valuation rin…
An integral domain is atomic if every nonzero nonunit factors into irreducibles. Let $R$ be an integral domain. We say that $R$ is a bounded factorization domain if it is atomic and for every nonzero nonunit $x \in R$, there is a positive integer $N$ such that for any factorization $x = a_1 \cdots a_n$ of $x$ into irreducibles $a_1, \dots, a_n$ in $R$, the inequality $n \le N$ holds. In addition, we say that $R$ is a finite factorization domain if it is atomic and every nonzero nonunit in $R$ factors into irreducibles in only finitely many ways (up to order and associates). The notions of boun…
We introduce the concept of \textit{quasi-stable} ideal in an integral domain $D$ (a nonzero fractional ideal $I$ of $D$ is quasi-stable if it is flat in its endomorphism ring $(I \colon I)$) and study properties of domains in which each nonzero fractional ideal is quasi-stable. We investigate some questions about flatness that were raised by S. Glaz and W.V. Vasconcelos in their 1977 paper \cite{GV}.
Let $D$ be an integral domain with quotient field $K$. The $b$-operation that associates to each nonzero $D$-submodule $E$ of $K$, $E^b := \bigcap\{EV \mid V valuation overring of D\}$, is a semistar operation that plays an important role in many questions of ring theory (e.g., if $I$ is a nonzero ideal in $D$, $I^b$ coincides with its integral closure). In a first part of the paper, we study the integral domains that are $b$-Noetherian (i.e., such that, for each nonzero ideal $I$ of $D$, $I^b = J^b$ for some a finitely generated ideal $J$ of $D$). For instance, we prove that a $b$-Noetherian …
We show that in certain Prüfer domains, each nonzero ideal $I$ can be factored as $I=I^v Π$, where $I^v$ is the divisorial closure of $I$ and $Π$ is a product of maximal ideals. This is always possible when the Prüfer domain is $h$-local, and in this case such factorizations have certain uniqueness properties. This leads to new characterizations of the $h$-local property in Prüfer domains. We also explore consequences of these factorizations and give illustrative examples.
An integral domain is called {\em Globalized multiplicatively pinched-Dedekind domain $($GMPD domain$)$} if every nonzero non-invertible ideal can be written as $JP_1\cdots P_k$ with $J$ invertible ideal and $P_1,...,P_k$ distinct ideals which are maximal among the nonzero non-invertible ideals, cf. \cite{DumII}. The GMPD domains with only finitely many overrings have been recently studied in \cite{SU}. In this paper we find the exact number of quasi-local overrings of GMPD domains that only finitely many overrings. Also we study the effect of quasi-local overrings on the properties of GMPD do…
In this paper, we advance an ideal-theoretic analogue of a "finite factorization domain" (FFD), giving such a domain the moniker "finite molecularization domain" (FMD). We characterize FMD's as those factorable domains (termed "molecular domains" in the paper) for which every nonzero ideal is divisible by only finitely many nonfactorable ideals (termed "molecules" in the paper) and the monoid of nonzero ideals of the domain is unit-cancellative, in the language of Fan, Geroldinger, Kainrath, and Tringali. We develop a number of connections, particularly at the local level, amongst the concepts…
We study the integral domains D satisfying the following condition: whenever I >AB with I,A,B nonzero ideals, there exist ideals A'>A and B'>B such that I=A'B'.
Let $D$ be an integral domain. A nonzero nonunit $a$ of $D$ is called a valuation element if there is a valuation overring $V$ of $D$ such that $aV\cap D=aD$. We say that $D$ is a valuation factorization domain (VFD) if each nonzero nonunit of $D$ can be written as a finite product of valuation elements. In this paper, we study some ring-theoretic properties of VFDs. Among other things, we show that (i) a VFD $D$ is Schreier, and hence ${\rm Cl}_t(D)=\{0\}$, (ii) if $D$ is a P$v$MD, then $D$ is a VFD if and only if $D$ is a weakly Matlis GCD-domain, if and only if $D[X]$, the polynomial ring o…
Let D be a Noetherian domain containing a field, d a nonzero nonunit of D and z an indeterminate over D. We prove that the generic fiber of D[1/d][[z]] over D[[z]] has dimension greater than the dimension of D/dD.
Let $Γ$ be a torsionless commutative cancellative monoid, $R =\bigoplus_{α\in Γ}R_α$ be a $Γ$-graded integral domain, and $H$ be the set of nonzero homogeneous elements of $R$. In this paper, we show that if $Q$ is a maximal $t$-ideal of $R$ with $Q \cap H = \emptyset$, then $R_Q$ is a valuation domain. We then use this result to give simple proofs of the facts that (i) $R$ is a UMT-domain if and only if $R_Q$ is a quasi-Prüfer domain for each homogeneous maximal $t$-ideal $Q$ of $R$ and (ii) $R$ is a P$v$MD if and only if every nonzero finitely generated homogeneous ideal of $R$ is $t$-invert…
It is well-known that if R is a domain with finite character, each locally principal nonzero ideal of R is invertible. We address the problem of understanding when the converse is true and survey some recent results.
In this paper, we address various aspects of divisibility by irreducibles in rings consisting of integer-valued polynomials. An integral domain is called atomic if every nonzero nonunit factors into irreducibles. Atomic domains that do not satisfy the ascending chain condition on principal ideals (ACCP) have proved to be elusive, and not many of them have been found since the first one was constructed by A. Grams in 1974. Here we exhibit the first class of atomic rings of integer-valued polynomials without the ACCP. An integral domain is called a finite factorization domain (FFD) if it is simu…
Let $A$ be an integral domain. We study new conditions on families of integral ideals of $A$ in order to get that $A$ is of $t$-finite character (i.e., each nonzero element of $A$ is contained in finitely many $t$-maximal ideals). We also investigate problems connected with the local invertibility of ideals.
For an integral domain $R$ and a commutative cancellative monoid $M$, the ring consisting of all polynomial expressions with coefficients in $R$ and exponents in $M$ is called the monoid ring of $M$ over $R$. An integral domain is called atomic if every nonzero nonunit element can be written as a product of irreducibles. In the investigation of the atomicity of integral domains, the building blocks are the irreducible elements. Thus, tools to prove irreducibility are crucial to study atomicity. In the first part of this paper, we extend Gauss's Lemma and Eisenstein's Criterion from polynomial …
Let $D$ be an integral domain with quotient field $K$ and let $\mathcal{I}% (D) $ be the set of nonzero ideals of $D$. Call, for $I,J\in \mathcal{I}(D)$ , the product $IJ$ of ideals condensed if $IJ=\{ij|i\in I,j\in J\}.$ Call $D$ a condensed domain if for each pair $I,J$ the product $IJ$ is condensed. We show that if $a,b$ are elements of a condensed domain such that $aD\cap bD=abD,$ then $(a,b)=D.$ It was shown in [Comm. Algebra 15 (1987), 1895-1920] that a pre-Schreier domain is a $\ast $-domain, i.e., $D$ satisfies $\ast :$ For every pair $\{a_{i}\}_{i=1}^{m},\{b_{j}\}_{j=1}^{n}$ of sets o…
The t-class semigroup of an integral domain is the semigroup of fractional t-ideals modulo its subsemigroup of nonzero principal ideals with the operation induced by ideal t-multiplication. This paper investigates ring-theoretic properties of a Noetherian domain that reflect reciprocally in the Clifford or Boolean property of its t-class semigroup.
This note intended to give a counterexample to a question related to the following theorem. Let D be a differential domain finitely generated over a differential field F with algebraically closed field of constants,C, of characteristic 0. If D has no nonzero proper differential ideals, then the differential constants of the quotient field of D is also C. The converse is known to be false but the question of whether the differential domain D can be finitely extended within its quotient field to a differential domain with no nonzero proper differential ideals has been raised. A counterexample in…
We study different form of boundness for ideals of almost Dedekind domains, generalizing the notions of critical ideals, radical factorization, and SP-domains. We show that every almost Dedekind domain has at least one noncritical maximal ideals and, indeed, the set of noncritical maximal ideals is dense in the maximal space, with respect to the constructible topology; as a consequence, we show that every almost Dedekind domain is SP-scattered, and in particular that the group $\mathrm{Inv}(D)$ of invertible ideals of an almost Dedekind domain $D$ is always free. If $D$ is an almost Dedekind d…
Let $R=\bigoplus_{α\inΓ}R_α$ be a graded integral domain graded by an arbitrary grading torsionless monoid $Γ$, and $\star$ be a semistar operation on $R$. In this paper we define and study the graded integral domain analogue of $\star$-Nagata and Kronecker function rings of $R$ with respect to $\star$. We say that $R$ is a graded Prüfer $\star$-multiplication domain if each nonzero finitely generated homogeneous ideal of $R$ is $\star_f$-invertible. Using $\star$-Nagata and Kronecker function rings, we give several different equivalent conditions for $R$ to be a graded Prüfer $\star$-multipli…
An integral domain $D,$ with quotient field $K,$ is a $v$-domain if for each nonzero finitely generated ideal $A$ of $D$ we have $(AA^{-1})^{-1}=D.$ It is well known that if $D$ is a $v$-domain$,$ then some quotient ring $D_{S}$ of $D$ may not be a $v$-domain. Calling $D$ a super $v$-domain if every quotient ring of $D$ is a $v$-domain we characterize super $v$-domains as locally $v$-domains. Using techniques from factorization theory we show that $D$ is a super $v$-domain if and only if $D[X]$ is a super $v$-domain if and only if $D+XK[X]$ is a super $v$-domain and give new examples of super …
The t-class semigroup of an integral domain R, denoted S_t(R), is the semigroup of fractional t-ideals modulo its subsemigroup of nonzero principal ideals with the operation induced by ideal t-multiplication. We recently proved that if R is a Krull-type domain, then S_t(R) is a Clifford semigroup. This paper aims to describe the idempotents of S_t(R) and the structure of their associated groups. We extend and recover well-known results on class semigroups of valuation domains and Prufer domains of finite character.
