We show that for all $k\ge 1$, there exists an integer $N(k)$ such that for all $n\ge N(k)$ the $k$-th order jet scheme over the commuting $n\times n$ matrix pairs scheme is reducible. At the other end of the spectrum, it is known that for all $k\ge 1$, the $k$-th order jet scheme over the commuting $2\times 2$ matrices is irreducible: we show that the same holds for $n=3$.
We obtain a series of new results on the problem of irreducibility of commuting varieties associated with symmetric pairs or, in other words, $Z_2$-graded simple Lie algebras. In particular, we present many examples of reducible commuting varieties and show that the number of irreducible components can be arbitrarily large.
It is known that the variety of pairs of n x n commuting upper triangular matrices isn't a complete intersection for infinitely many values of n; we show that there exists m such that this happens if and only if n > m. We also show that m < 18 and that it could be found by determining the dimension of the variety of pairs of commuting strictly upper triangular matrices. Then we define a natural map from the variety of pairs of commuting n x n matrices onto a subvariety defined by linear equations of the grassmannian of subspaces of codimension 2 of a vector space of dimension n x n.
The aim of this paper is to describe the irregular locus of the commuting variety of a reductive symmetric Lie algebra. More precisely, we want to enlighten a remark of Popov. In [Po], the irregular locus of the commuting variety of any reductive Lie algebra is described and its codimension is computed. This provides a bound for the codimension of the singular locus of this commuting variety. [Po, Remark 1.13] suggests that the arguments and methods of [Po] are suitable for obtaining analogous results in the symmetric setting. We show that some difficulties arise in this case and we obtain som…
We study K3 surfaces with a pair of commuting involutions that are non-symplectic with respect to two anti-commuting complex structures that are determined by a hyper-Kähler metric. One motivation for this paper is the role of such $\mathbb{Z}^2_2$-actions for the construction of $G_2$-manifolds. We find a large class of smooth K3 surfaces with such pairs of involutions, but we also pay special attention to the case that the K3 surface has ADE-singularities. Therefore, we introduce a special class of non-symplectic involutions that are suitable for explicit calculations and find 320 examples o…
We give a construction of completely integrable 4-dimensional Hamiltonian systems with cubic Hamilton functions. Applying to the corresponding pairs of commuting quadratic Hamiltonian vector fields the so called Kahan-Hirota-Kimura discretization scheme, we arrive at pairs of birational 4-dimensional maps. We show that these maps are symplectic with respect to a symplectic structure that is a perturbation of the standard symplectic structure on $\mathbb R^4$, and possess two independent integrals of motion, which are perturbations of the original Hamilton functions. Thus, these maps are comple…
Let $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{g}_0\oplus \mathfrak{g}_1$ be a $\mathbb Z_2$-grading of a classical Lie algebra such that $(\mathfrak{g}, \mathfrak{g}_0)$ is a classical symmetric pair. Let $G$ be a classical group with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and let $G_0$ be the connected subgroup of $G$ with ${\rm Lie} (G_0)=\mathfrak g_0$. For $d \geq 2$, let $\mathfrak{C}^d(\mathfrak{g}_1)$ be the $d$-th commuting scheme associated with the symmetric pair $(\mathfrak g, \mathfrak g_0)$. In this article, we study the categorical quotient $\mathfrak{C}^d(\mathfrak{g}_1)//{G_0}$ via the Chevalley restriction…
Commuting pairs of ordinary differential operators are classified by a set of algebro-geometric data called ``algebraic spectral data''. These data consist of an algebraic curve (``spectral curve'') $Γ$ with a marked point $γ_\infty$, a holomorphic vector bundle $E$ on $Γ$ and some additional data related to the local structure of $Γ$ and $E$ in a neighborhood of $γ_\infty$. If the rank $r$ of $E$ is greater than 1, one can use the so called ``Tyurin parameters'' in place of $E$ itself. The Tyurin parameters specify the pole structure of a basis of joint eigenfunctions of the commuting pair. T…
Let $B$ be a nilpotent matrix and suppose that its Jordan canonical form is determined by a partition $λ$. Then it is known that its nilpotent commutator $N_B$ is an irreducible variety and that there is a unique partition $μ$ such that the intersection of the orbit of nilpotent matrices corresponding to $μ$ with $N_B$ is dense in $N_B$. We prove that map $D$ given by $D(λ)=μ$ is an idempotent map. This answers a question of Basili and Iarrobino and gives a partial answer to a question of Panyushev. In the proof, we use the fact that for a generic matrix $A \in N_B$ the algebra generated by $A…
We consider pairs of commuting isometries that are annihilated by a polynomial. We show that the polynomial must be inner toral, which is a geometric condition on its zero set. We show that cyclic pairs of commuting isometries are nearly unitarily equivalent if they are annihilated by the same minimal polynomial.
By normalizing the space of commuting pairs of elements in a reductive Lie group G, and the corresponding space for the Langlands dual group, we construct pairs of hyperkahler orbifolds which satisfy the conditions to be mirror partners in the sense of Strominger-Yau-Zaslow. The same holds true for commuting quadruples in a compact Lie group. The Hodge numbers of the mirror partners, or more precisely their orbifold E-polynomials, are shown to agree, as predicted by mirror symmetry. These polynomials are explicitly calculated when G is a quotient of SL(n).
Here we prove that a commuting variety associated with a symmetric pair (g, g_0) is irreducible for (so_{n+m}, so_n + so_m) and reducible for (gl_{n+m}, {gl}_n + gl_m) with n>m, (so_{2n}, gl_n) with odd n, (E_6, {so}_{10} + k).
Let g be a complex reductive Lie algebra with Cartan algebra h. Hotta and Kashiwara defined a holonomic D-module M, on g x h, called Harish-Chandra module. We relate gr(M), an associated graded module with respect to a canonical Hodge filtration on M, to the isospectral commuting variety, a subvariety of g x g x h x h which is a ramified cover of the variety of pairs of commuting elements of g. Our main result establishes an isomorphism of gr(M) with the structure sheaf of X_norm, the normalization of the isospectral commuting variety. It follows, thanks to the theory of Hodge modules, that th…
The_commuting variety_ is the pairs of NxN matrices (X,Y) such that XY = YX. We introduce the_diagonal commutator scheme_, {(X,Y) : XY-YX is diagonal}, which we prove to be a reduced complete intersection, one component of which is the commuting variety. (We conjecture there to be only one other component.) The diagonal commutator scheme has a flat degeneration to the scheme {(X,Y) : XY lower triangular, YX upper triangular}, which is again a reduced complete intersection, this time with n! components (one for each permutation). The degrees of these components give interesting invariants of pe…
Let K be an infinite field and denote by H(n,K) the family of pairs (A,B) of commuting nilpotent n by n matrices with entries in K. There has been substantial recent study of the connection between H(n,K) and the fibre H[n] of the punctual Hilbert scheme of the plane, over an n-fold point of the symmetric product, by V. Baranovsky, R. Basili, and A. Premet. We study the stratification of H(n,K) by the Hilbert function of the Artinian ring K[A,B]. We show that when dim_K K[A,B] = n, then the generic element of the pencil A+λB, λ\in K, has Jordan partition the maximum partition P(H) whose diagon…
The aim of this article is to classify the pairs (S, G), where S is a smooth minimal surface of general type with p_g=0 and K^2=7, G is a subgroup of the automorphism group of S and G is isomorphic to the group $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$. The Inoue surfaces with K^2=7, which are finite Galois $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-covers of the 4-nodal cubic surface, are the first examples of such pairs. More recently, the author constructed a new family of such pairs. They are finite Galois $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-covers of certain 6-nodal Del Pezzo surfaces of degree one. We prove that the base of the Kuranishi family of deformat…
The commuting variety of matrices over a given field is a well-studied object in linear algebra and algebraic geometry. As a set, it consists of all pairs of square matrices with entries in that field that commute with one another. In this paper we generalise the commuting variety by using the commuting distance of matrices. We show that over an algebraically closed field, each of our sets does indeed form a variety. We compute the dimension of the distance-$2$ commuting variety and characterize its irreducible components. We also work over other fields, showing that the distance-$2$ commuting…
We prove that the algebraic set of pairs of matrices with a diagonal commutator over a field of positive prime characteristic, its irreducible components, and their intersection are $F$-pure when the size of matrices is equal to 3. Furthermore, we show that this algebraic set is reduced and the intersection of its irreducible components is irreducible in any characteristic for pairs of matrices of any size. In addition, we discuss various conjectures on the singularities of these algebraic sets and the system of parameters on the corresponding coordinate rings.
It is known that the variety parametrizing pairs of commuting nilpotent matrices is irreducible and that this provides a proof of the irreducibility of the punctual Hilbert scheme in the plane. We extend this link to the nilpotent commuting variety of parabolic subalgebras of $M\_n(\K)$ and to the punctual nested Hilbert scheme. By this method, we obtain a lower bound on the dimension of these moduli spaces. We characterize the numerical conditions under which they are irreducible. In some reducible cases, we describe the irreducible components and their dimension.
In this paper we adapt some techniques developed for K3 surfaces, to study the geometry of a family of projective varieties in $\Pl_K^2 \times \Pl_K^2 \times \Pl_K^2$ defined as the intersection of a form of degree $(2,2,2)$ and a form of degree $(1,1,1)$. Members of the family will be equipped with dominant rational self-maps and we will study the actions of those maps on divisors and compute the first dynamical degrees of the composition of any pair.
Given an nxn nilpotent matrix over an algebraically closed field K, we prove some properties of the set of all the nxn nilpotent matrices over K which commute with it. Then we give a proof of the irreducibility of the variety of all the pairs (A,B) of nxn nilpotent matrices over K if either char K = 0 or char K isn't less than n/2. We get as a consequence a proof of the irreducibility of the local Hilbert scheme of n points of a smooth algebraic surface over K with the previous condition on char K.
We develop the formal analogue of the Morse theory for a pair of commuting gradient-like vector fields. The resulting algebraic formalism turns out to be very similar to the algebra of the infrared of Gaiotto, Moore and Witten (see [GMW], [KKS]): from a manifold M with the pair of gradient-like commuting vector fields, subject to some general position conditions we construct an L_$\infty$-algebra and Maurer-Cartan element in it. We also provide Morse-theoretic examples for the algebra of the infrared data.
We study a scheme M closely related to the set of pairs of n by n-matrices with rank 1 commutator. We show that M is a reduced complete intersection with n+1 irreducible components, which we describe. There is a distinguished Lagrangian subvariety Nil in M. We introduce a category, C, of D-modules whose characteristic variety is contained in Nil. Simple objects of that category are analogous to Lusztig's character sheaves. We construct a functor of Quantum Hamiltonian reduction from category C to the category O for type A rational Cherednik algebra.
