Photoexcited states are relaxed by transferring energy to the environments. In order to study which coupling allows fast energy transfer to lattice vibrations in correlated electron systems, we calculate the time evolutions of the kinetic energies of different types and frequencies of lattice vibrations. The one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model is augmented with electron-lattice couplings that modulate transfer integrals, site energies, and Coulomb repulsion strengths. The time-dependent Schrödinger equation is solved for exact many-electron wave functions, and the classical equation of motion for the lattice displacements. In order to transfer energy to classical lattice vibrations that modulate transfer integrals or site energies, the translational invariance must be broken to give optical activity to an electronic excitation with wave number $ π$ and to these lattice vibrations. On the other hand, a certain amount of energy is always transferred to lattice vibrations that modulate Coulomb repulsion strengths, irrespective of the symmetry of the ground state, as long as the corresponding electron-lattice couplings are present. In strongly correlated electron systems, these couplings can be strong, although they are usually insignificant because their effects on the equilibrium properties can be absorbed into redefinition of Coulomb repulsion strengths. We will discuss competition or collaboration between energy transfer pathways through different types of electron-lattice couplings.
The dissociation of excitons into holes and electrons in photoexcited semiconductors, despite being one of the first recognized examples of a Mott transition, still defies a complete understanding, especially regarding the character of the transition, which is first order in some cases and second order in others. Here we consider an idealized model of photoexcited semiconductors that can be mapped onto a spin-polarised half-filled Hubbard model, whose phase diagram reproduces most of the phenomenology of photoexcited semiconductors and uncovers the key role of the exciton binding energy in det…
Motivated by the recent development of time-resolved resonant-inelastic x-ray scattering (TRRIXS) in photoexcited antiferromagnetic Mott insulators, we numerically investigate momentum-dependent transient spin dynamics in a half-filled Hubbard model on a square lattice. After turning off a pumping photon pulse, the intensity of a dynamical spin structure factor temporally oscillates with frequencies determined by the energy of two magnons in the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator. We find an antiphase behavior in the oscillations between two orthogonal momentum directions, parallel and perpendic…
The photoexcitation of a Mott insulator on a square lattice weakens the intensity of both single- and two-magnon excitations as observed in time-resolved resonant-inelastic X-ray scattering and time-resolved Raman scattering, respectively. However, the spectral changes in the low-energy regions below the magnons have not yet been clearly understood. To uncover the nature of the photoinduced low-energy magnetic excitations of the Mott insulator, we numerically investigate the transient magnetic dynamics in a photoexcited half-filled Hubbard model on a square lattice. After turning off a pump pu…
Many-body Effects on Excitonic Optical Properties of Photoexcited Semiconductor Quantum Wire Structures
Employing the density-matrix renormalization group technique in the matrix-product-state representation, we investigate the photoexcited superconducting correlations induced by the $η$-pairing mechanism in the half-filled Hubbard chain. We estimate the characteristic pair correlation function and verify the accuracy of our numerical results by comparison with exact-diagonalization data for small systems. The optimal parameter set of the pump that most enhances the $η$-pair correlations, is calculated in the strong-coupling regime. For such a pump, we explore the possibility of quasi-long-range…
Motivated by the recent progress in time-resolved nonequilibrium spectroscopy in condensed matter, we study an optically excited one-dimensional ionic Hubbard model by exact diagonalization. The model is relevant to organic crystals, transition metal oxides, or ultracold atoms in optical lattices. We implement numerical pump-probe measurements to calculate time-dependent conductivity and single-particle spectral functions. In general, short optical excitation induces a metallic behavior imprinted as a Drude peak in conductivity or an in-gap density of states. In a Mott insulator, we find that …
Mott insulators sometimes show dramatic changes in their electronic states after photoirradiation, as indicated by photoinduced Mott-insulator-to-metal transition. In the photoexcited states of Mott insulators, electron wavefunctions are more delocalized than in the ground state, and long-range Coulomb interactions play important roles in charge dynamics. However, their effects are difficult to discriminate experimentally. Here, we show that in a one-dimensional Mott insulator, bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene-difluorotetracyanoquinodimethane (ET-F2TCNQ), long-range Coulomb interactions s…
We study a simple model of photovoltaic energy harvesting across a Mott insulating gap consisting of a correlated layer connected to two metallic leads held at different chemical potentials. Upon driving the layer with a time periodic electric field a particle current is induced from the low-energy to the high-energy lead. We address in particular the issue of impact ionization, whereby a particle photoexcited to the high-energy part of the upper Hubbard band uses its extra energy to produce a second particle-hole excitation. We find a drastic increase of the photocurrent upon entering the fre…
Systematic pressure- and temperature-dependent infrared studies on the two-dimensional organic quantum spin-liquid $β^{\prime}$-EtMe$_3$Sb[Pd(dmit)$_2$]$_2$ disclose the electronic and lattice evolution across the Mott insulator-metal transition. Increasing hydrostatic pressure continuously suppresses the insulating ground state; for $p>0.6$~GPa, a Drude-like component develops indicating the appearance of coherent quasiparticles at the Fermi level. In the vicinity of the Mott transition, not only the electronic state changes rapidly, but also the vibration modes exhibit a jump both in frequen…
Manipulating spin fluctuations with ultrafast laser pulses is a promising route to dynamically control collective phenomena in strongly correlated materials. However, understanding how photoexcited spin degrees of freedom evolve at a microscopic level requires a momentum- and energy-resolved characterization of their nonequilibrium dynamics. Here, we study the photoinduced dynamics of finite-momentum spin excitations in two-dimensional Mott insulators on a square lattice. By calculating the time-resolved resonant inelastic x-ray scattering cross-section, we show that an ultrafast pump above th…
Nonlinear phononics holds the promise for controlling properties of quantum materials on the ultrashort timescale. Using nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory, we solve a model for the description of organic solids, where correlated electrons couple nonlinearly to a quantum phonon mode. Unlike previous works, we exactly diagonalize the local phonon mode within the noncrossing approximation to include the full phononic fluctuations. By exciting the local phonon in a broad range of frequencies near resonance with an ultrashort pulse, we show it is possible to induce a Mott insulator-to-meta…
The lattice thermodynamics of a 1T-TaS2 layer, e.g. the spontaneous formation of a sqrt13*sqrt13 commensurate charge density wave (CCDW) and vibrations around the equilibrium position, is calculated by ab initio molecular dynamics. Based on that, we examine how the ground-state electronic structure is renormalized by lattice temperature. We show that the band gap within the density functional theory plus onsite-U correction shrinks by half when the temperature raises from 0 K to 200 K. The gap size reduction is one order of magnitude larger than the temperature variation in energy. This giant …
Lattice vibrations of the charge-transfer salt $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_{3}$: novel interpretation of the electrodynamic response in a spin-liquid compound
Vanadium dioxide is one of the most studied strongly correlated materials. Nonetheless, the intertwining between electronic correlation and lattice effects has precluded a comprehensive description of the rutile metal to monoclinic insulator transition, in turn triggering a longstanding "the chicken or the egg" debate about which comes first, the Mott localisation or the Peierls distortion. Here, we suggest that this problem is in fact ill-posed: the electronic correlations and the lattice vibrations conspire to stabilise the monoclinic insulator, and so they must be both considered not to mis…
Recent ultrafast magnetic-sensitive measurements [Phys. Rev. B 92, 184429 (2015) and Phys. Rev. B 96, 184414 (2017)] have revealed a delayed melting of the long-range cycloid spin-order in TbMnO$_3$ following photoexcitation across the fundamental Mott-Hubbard gap. The microscopic mechanism behind this slow transfer of energy from the photoexcited carriers to the spin degrees of freedom is still elusive and not understood. Here, we address this problem by combining spectroscopic ellipsometry, ultrafast broadband optical spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. Upon photoexcitation, we observe …
Recent experiments on the twisted transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) material, $\rm WSe_2/WS_2$, have observed insulating states at fractional occupancy of the moiré bands. Such states were conceived as generalized Wigner crystals (GWCs). In this article, we investigate the problem of Wigner crystallization in the presence of an underlying (moiré) lattice. Based on the best estimates of the system parameters, we find a variety of homobilayer and heterobilayer TMDs to be excellent candidates for realizing GWCs. In particular, our analysis based on $r_{s}$ indicates that $\rm MoSe_{2}$ (among…
