We find sufficient conditions for log-convexity and log-concavity for the functions of the forms $a\mapsto\sum{f_k}(a)_kx^k$, $a\mapsto\sum{f_k}Γ(a+k)x^k$ and $a\mapsto\sum{f_k}x^k/(a)_k$. The most useful examples of such functions are generalized hypergeometric functions. In particular, we generalize the Turán inequality for the confluent hypergeometric function recently proved by Barnard, Gordy and Richards and log-convexity results for the same function recently proved by Baricz. Besides, we establish a reverse inequality which complements naturally the inequality of Barnard, Gordy and Richards. Similar results are established for the Gauss and the generalized hypergeometric functions. A conjecture about monotonicity of a quotient of products of confluent hypergeometric functions is made.
The paper studies logarithmic convexity and concavity of the generalized hypergeometric function with respect to simultaneous shift of several parameters. We use integral representations and properties of Meijer's $G$ function to prove log-convexity. When all parameters are shifted we use series manipulations to examine the power series coefficients of the generalized Turánian formed by the generalized hypergeometric function. In cases when all zeros of the generalized hypergeometric function are real, we further explore the consequences of the extended Laguerre inequalities and formulate a co…
In this paper, authors study the convexity and concavity properties of real-valued function with respect to the classical means, and prove a conjecture posed by Bruce Ebanks in \cite{e}.
This note proves convexity resp. concavity of the ground state energy of one dimensional Schrödinger operators as a function of an endpoint of the interval for convex resp. concave potentials.
We study the convexity properties of the generalized trigonometric functions considered as functions of parameter. We show that $p\to\sin_p(y)$ and $p\to\cos_p(y)$ are log-concave on the appropriate intervals while $p\to\tan_p(y)$ is log-convex. We also prove similar facts about the generalized hyperbolic functions. In particular, our results settle the major part of a conjecture put forward in a recent paper by Baricz, Bhayo and Vuorinen.
We establish conditions for the discrete versions of logarithmic concavity and convexity of the higher order regularized basic hypergeometric function with respect simultaneous shift of all its parameters. For a particular case of Heine's basic hypergeometric function we prove logarithmic concavity and convexity with respect to the bottom parameter. We further establish a linearization identity for the generalized Turánian formed by a particular case of Heine's basic hypergeometric function. Its $q=1$ case also appears to be new.
We prove some "power" generalizations of Marcus-Lopes-style (including McLeod and Bullen) concavity inequalities for elementary symmetric polynomials, and convexity inequalities (of McLeod and Baston) for complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials. Finally, we present sundry concavity results for elementary symmetric polynomials, of which the main result is a concavity theorem that among other implies a well-known log-convexity result of Muir (1972/74) for positive definite matrices.
In this paper, we investigate properties of set-valued mappings that establish connection between the values of this map at two arbitrary points of the domain and the value at their midpoint. Such properties are, for instance, Jensen convexity/concavity, $K$-Jensen convexity/concavity (where $K$ is the set of nonnegative elements of an ordered vector space), and approximate/strong $K$-Jensen convexity/concavity. Assuming weak but natural regularity assumptions on the set-valued map, our main purpose is to deduce the convexity/concavity consequences of these properties in the appropriate sense.…
This paper studies the log-convexity of the extended beta functions. As a consequence, Turán-type inequalities are established. The monotonicity, log-convexity, log-concavity of extended hypergeometric functions are deduced by using the inequalities on extended beta functions,. The particular cases of those results also gives the Turán-type inequalities for extended confluent and extended Gaussian hypergeometric functions. Some reverse of Turán-type inequalities also derived.
In this present paper, we establish the log-convexity and Turán type inequalities of extended $(p,q)$-beta functions. Also, we present the log-convexity, the monotonicity and Turán type inequalities for extended $(p,q)$-confluent hypergeometric function by using the inequalities of extended $(p,q)$-beta functions.
Polynomial sequence ${P_m}_{m\geq0}$ is $q$-logarithmically concave if $P_{m}^2-P_{m+1}P_{m-1}$ is a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients for any $m\geq{1}$. We introduce an analogue of this notion for formal power series whose coefficients are nonnegative continuous functions of parameter. Four types of such power series are considered where parameter dependence is expressed by a ratio of gamma functions. We prove six theorems stating various forms of $q$-logarithmic concavity and convexity of these series. The main motivating examples for these investigations are hypergeometric functions…
The beta distribution is a two-parameter family of probability distributions whose distribution function is the (regularised) incomplete beta function. In this paper, the inverse incomplete beta function is studied analytically as univariate function of the first parameter. Monotonicity, limit results and convexity properties are provided. In particular, logarithmic concavity of the inverse incomplete beta function is established. In addition, we provide monotonicity results on inverses of a larger class of parametrised distributions that may be of independent interest.
Euler's gamma function is logarithmically convex on positive semi-axis. Additivity of logarithmic convexity implies that the function sum of gammas with non-negative coefficients is also log-convex. In this paper we investigate the series in reciprocal gamma functions, where each term is clearly log-concave. Log-concavity is not preserved by addition, so that non-negativity of the coefficients is now insufficient to draw any conclusions about the sum. We demonstrate that the sum is log-concave if the sequence of coefficients times factorial is log-concave and the sum is discrete Wright log-con…
We find an integral representation for the generalized hypergeometric function unifying known representations via generalized Stieltjes, Laplace and cosine Fourier transforms. Using positivity conditions for the weight in this representation we establish various new facts regarding generalized hypergeometric functions, including complete monotonicity, log-convexity in upper parameters, monotonicity of ratios and new proofs of Luke's bounds. Besides, we derive two-sided inequalities for the Bessel type hypergeometric functions by using their series representations.
We study the convexity/concavity properties of the generalized $p$-trigonometric functions in the sense of P. Lindqvist with respect to the power means.
The purpose of this paper is to provide a set of sufficient conditions so that the normalized form of the Fox-Wright functions have certain geometric properties like close-to-convexity, univalency, convexity and starlikeness inside the unit disc. In particular, we study some geometric properties for some class of functions related to the generalized hypergeometric functions.
Let R+ = (0,infinity) and let M be the family of all mean values of two numbers in R+ (some examples are the arithmetic, geometric, and harmonic means). Given m1, m2 in M, we say that a function f : R+ to R+ is (m1,m2)-convex if f(m1(x,y)) < or = m2(f(x),f(y)) for all x, y in R+ . The usual convexity is the special case when both mean values are arithmetic means. We study the dependence of (m1,m2)-convexity on m1 and m2 and give sufficient conditions for (m1,m2)-convexity of functions defined by Maclaurin series. The criteria involve the Maclaurin coefficients. Our results yield a class of new…
In this paper our aim is to deduce some sufficient (and necessary) conditions for the close-to-convexity of some special functions and their derivatives, like Bessel functions, Struve functions, and a particular case of Lommel functions of the first kind, which can be expressed in terms of the hypergeometric function ${}_1F_2$. The key tool in our proofs is a result of Shah and Trimble about transcendental entire functions with univalent derivatives. Moreover, a known result of Pólya on entire functions, the infinite product representations and some results on zeros of Bessel, Struve and Lomme…
In this note we offer some log-concavity properties of certain functions related to Bessel functions of the first kind and modified Bessel functions of the first and second kind, by solving partially a recent conjecture on the log-convexity/log-concavity properties for modified Bessel functions of the first kind and their derivatives. Moreover, we give an application of the mentioned results by extending two inequalities of van der Corput to Bessel and modified Bessel functions of the first kind. Similar inequalities are proved also for modified Bessel functions of the second kind, as well as …
In this paper, mainly using the convexity of the function $\frac{a^x-b^x}{c^x-d^x}$ and convexity or concavity of the function $\ln\frac{a^x-b^x}{c^x-d^x}$ on the real line, where $a>b\geq c>d>0$ are fixed real numbers, we obtain some important relations between various important means of these numbers. Also, we apply the obtained results to Ky Fan type inequalities and get some new refinements.
The normalized incomplete beta function can be defined either as cumulative distribution function of beta density or as the Gauss hypergeometric function with one of the upper parameters equal to unity. Logarithmic concavity/convexity of this function in parameters was established by Finner and Roters in 1997. Their proof is indirect and rather difficult; it is based on generalized reproductive property of certain more general distributions. These authors remark that these results "seems to be very hard to obtain by usual analytic methods". In the first part of this paper we provide such proof…
In this paper we prove some monotonicity, log--convexity and log--concavity properties for the Volterra and incomplete Volterra functions. Moreover, as consequences of these results, we present some functional inequalities (like Turán type inequalities) as well as we determined sharp upper and lower bounds for the normalized incomplete Volterra functions in terms of weighted power means.
